paxonel:
Why do people will rather choose not to be sinful, is it because of the fear of hell fire or because of the fear of the immediate or later consequences?

I know that everyone make mistakes in life, but what kind of mistake do attract hellfire punishment?

Is hellfire enough deterrent for any sin all?
Has anyone had the misfortune to go to hellfire and was back to life, what was your experience?

Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:

Is the devil and his angels tormenting people in hellfire enough deterrent for sin?

When we talk about hellfire, it's more like weather forecast:

raining season had just begun:
"people living around riverine areas should relocate, because there shall be flood...". Forecasters giving warnings

When we talk about hellfire, it's more like weather forecast;
it is not to instigate/instill fears on sinners...
but to create awareness
and let those who love themselves do the needful!

Religion / Re: What Should Christians Do With A Bola Tinubu Presidency? By Deji Yesufu by KNOWMORE56: 8:25pm On Mar 01, 2023
VBCampaign:
What Should Christians Do with a Bola Tinubu Presidency?

By: Deji Yesufu

Earlier this morning, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was pronounced winner of the 2023 Presidential elections in Nigeria. Tinubu becomes the 16th president and Head of State of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Tinubu, a Muslim from South-West Nigeria, had chosen a Muslim from North-East Nigeria as running mate. In the process, he led his campaign on a Muslim-Muslim ticket, which alienated a lot of Christian voters. Tinubu had clearly reasoned that the votes he will pull from northern Nigeria will far outweigh the votes from a vexed section of Christian voters. And one must admit that he was right after all. The natural question therefore is this: what do Christians do with a Bola Tinubu Presidency? My short answer will be to counsel that we accept it. The long answer will be explained in the rest of the essay.

First. Christians must come to terms with how the Bible regards political power. Scripture teaches that all power belongs to God and he bestows them on whomever he wishes. What it means is that in the providence of God, nothing could happen in the political arena of Nigeria without God ordaining it. In other words, God made Tinubu the Nigerian president. I have read commentaries elsewhere where it is suggested that God could never make somebody with the kind of record Tinubu has president. Truth is that if every one of the contestants are weighed on the balance of God’s holiness, no one will emerge worthy. God still uses imperfect people in governance. Except for Joseph and Daniel, every other ruler in the Bible were heathens. Why do we think that God will then raise a Christian or a near perfect man to rule Nigeria?

Second. The political contest is not over. Nigeria still has a judiciary, no matter how imperfect she is. At the last count, Bola Tinubu polled 8.7 million votes; Atiku – 6.9M; Obi – 6.1M; and Kwankwanso – 1.7M. On the natural, the difference between Obi and Tinubu votes is a mere 2.6M votes. If the Labour Party do their home work well, they can narrow down this difference through careful data collection from polling units and go to argue their case in court. But does this nullify my earlier claim that God made Tinubu president? No, it does not. The same God who made Tinubu president now can remove him through legal means. The opposition have been positing that Tinubu rigged himself to government. That’s fine. The onus is on them to argue their case in court, present their evidence and allow the judiciary to pronounce on the matter. Whatever comes out of that process is the will of God. Does that mean that God is just sitting down, rubber stamping everything men do? No. It means that God has both decreed the end from the beginning and also ensures the means to the end. True faith concludes that God is in charge, whatever the actions of men.

Third. Nigeria is the Christian’s Jerusalem. God’s command to us is to pray for the peace of Jerusalem because if she has peace, we will have peace also (Jeremiah 29:7). Now the political peace of Nigeria has been long in the making. Nigeria is not a divine entity; this country did not fall from heaven. It was human beings who put the concept of nationhood together and concluded that large swaths of communities connected together as a nation will fair better than isolated communities. The modern Nigerian state came about via British colonisation of our people. After the British left, Nigeria has gone through ups and down. The country has endured a thirty-month war; it has also experienced period of sustained prosperity; etc. All of these add up to the making of the country. Every thing Nigeria has experienced as a nation are part of God’s providence for her and the Christian mindset is that all of these will add up towards God fulfilling his good purpose for us. And God’s primary purpose for Nigeria is the redemption of his elect within this nation state. Whatever will make for peace, the preaching of the gospel and the enduring of a Christian Church in Nigeria is God’s purpose for this country. Anything else is secondary. So, any government that will allow for the gospel to thrive is the government Christians must pray for.

Lastly. In the light of the aforementioned: with the reality of God sovereignty actively working to give Nigeria a purposeful government and God working through any circumstance, including overturning a Tinubu government in the judiciary and installing Obi, the Christian’s attitude is one of complete faith in God. God is in charge. Therefore, the Christian’s attitude to a Bola Ahmed Tinubu government is one that calls us to pray for him. We must plead with God that Tinubu will succeed in his proposed policies. We must pray that God will give him health and wisdom. We must ask that God send him sound men to develop a new Nigeria. We must pray against nothing evil befalling him. After we have prayed, we must trust God to do his will.

As I close this essay, I wish to make an appeal to Eastern Nigeria who are the biggest losers in the Peter Obi botched presidential campaign: please be patient. My friend from Enugu told me that he put his reputation on the line, calling his friends who had sympathy for IPOB to give the Nigerian project a chance: that a free and fair election can happen in Nigeria. He says now he cannot say anything because he is now being blamed. He said if his friends resort to guerrilla warfare against Nigeria, he will not be able to oppose them again. I sympathise with the Ibo nation but I can only appeal for peace. I believe the judiciary still works and Peter Obi had used the Judiciary before to recover a stolen mandate. Let’s allow peace to reign and let’s argue our case like responsible people. Most people only know how violence begin; few know how it will end. I believe Ndigbo will one day have her son rule Nigeria. Peter Obi made a very good statement towards that end in the just concluded elections. Nigeria is better together than torn apart.

God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria

Source: https://textandpublishing.com/what-should-christians-do-with-a-bola-tinubu-presidency/

My questions are:

1. if someone had chosen or should choose christian / christian ticket, will there be peace?

2. Does the God of Nigerian Christians answer their prayers concerning leadership at all?

3. How have the Nigerian Christians benefited from the outgoing leadership of this country?

I'm very sad!!!!!! cry

Something is surely wrong with Nigerian Christians.....

it is actually wise to change from bad to good; from good to better and from better to best....

It is in the light of this ( desire for better life/things) that the other nations of the earth abandoned their deities for that of the Israel -

The Deity of this people (Israelites) had proved again and again that He's Chief among others.

Africans had done well by choosing a better Deity over their own.

1. I beg to differ! Religion is instead a man-made system of doctrines and traditions, theories and ideas put forward by men around the identity of a specific deity as a tool with which to pursue power and control over the minds of lives of their fellow men. And your many religious leaders and authorities are such men in whose hands religion is the tool with which to satisfy their lust for power, fame, and greed. undecided

2. None! Why should any living man allow his fellow man to wield control over his existence? undecided

@ bold,The universe is under the law/principle of check and balancing.
There is no course or sphere of life, or an individual that is not under the control of another.

You are under the control of many things and many individuals (although you seem not to be aware).

Whatever you accept in your life, whatever you choose to obey, you have come under the control of such a person or thing.

*. Romans 6:16 KJV " Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey ; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?"

No, it is not only religions that control people.
The INTERNET do, the educations do, the many individuals philosophies do...

Nobody is complete to himself in all areas of life...
Therefore, everyone is under the control of another person in one way or the other!...

Right in what way?

To devils, all the things that are bad are right.

To lovers of good all the things that are good are right!

So you see, rightness depends on what a person wants.

So if a person wants good, he chooses a pursuit that should bring him good things and the other people who want bad choose a pursuit that achieves their aims.

Thus, there is nothing like right religion

Yes. I began to imagine, supposing the Bible had approved lying as the rightness;

we could have been practicing it now.....

Now we believe that whatever the God of the Bible says it's bad; it is bad!

But that which He says it's bad, is the very things His rival (Satan) says it's good.

Therefore, it is all about desires, choice and goals in individuals....

Check the promises attached to these things, compare and contrast...

and be ready to accept the outcome of your decision!...

Myself, I was born into paganism (African transitional worship system)....
When the church people started talking about hellfire, I said to myself, if there is a way to avoid such a place; I think I have to follow it.

Then the Way was introduced to me. As I increase in learning and otherwise, I can now say:
even if there is no heaven to get to and there is no hellfire to avoid; I have nothing to say "had I known"

In other words, I'm not regretting, neither will I regret following Jesus my Redeemer and Saviour.

My conviction is from the following stories ( although, majority taken from the Book of books).

My conviction, that the story about Jesus birth, death and resurrection is the approved means by the Almighty for humans to be delivered from: sin, Satan and suffering: -

1. In the Garden of Eden, God gets an animal skin to cover the unclothedness of the couple...
Genesis 3:21

only God has lasting solutions to the shame we got ourselves into...

2. The sacrifice of Abel was accepted because it contains blood... Genesis 4:4

blood ( which is life) is demanded by God to appease His anger - Matthew 26:28; Hebrews 9:22; Hebrews 10:18

3. God told the people to confess their sins upon a blameless animal, and let the animal die instead of human... Leviticus 16:21

Jesus is the sin Bearer, the Lamb of God, He's the goat that replaced Isaac [b/]

4. When God delivered the Israel people from slavery, it's animals and its blood that was the main ingredients...Exodus 12:23

[b] it's pointing to Jesus...

5. For Isaac to be spared, there must be a replacement ( not by humans)...Genesis 22:15

C 3 above...

6. For a man like Abraham to had offered up his "only begotten son" for sacrifice : God was showing humans something significant...Genesis 22:1-15

7. The sign that was put on the window of the harlot Raahab was red, a colour of blood to mark her for deliverance ... Joshua 2:18

8. The bronze snake that was lifted up so that whoever wanted to be delivered from the other smaller snakes can look up to it... Numbers 21:9

O my people, this Jesus is the summary of all the old stories of deliverance!

He saves from: sins, sicknesses, Satan, sufferings, set back...

Come to Him, turn to Him....

I have witnessed it in my life!

God is a spirit and the scripture says that he created us in his own image and likewise. Therefore, we are also spirit being.

You are correct and more correct. For the Word says:

*. Romans 8:9 KJV "But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his."

ESV "You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him."

This means he/she who has the spirit of God in him/her is a spirit being!

Surely we know that when he said to them "But ye are not in the flesh,"
doesn't mean they do no have flesh!

But he clearly put it, because of the Spirit in them, they are spirit being

You're just a sadist. Go and get a life because God never had such thoughts {Jeremiah 7:31} if you read such a thing and concluded it's literal then you must be as stupid as those who thought Jesus was talking about cannibalism when he spoke to them in parables! John 6:61-65

Satan and his demons and all false prophets has been erased from God's plan for the future that's the meaning of what you're reading. So all those that failed to do what will make their names enter into the book of life will also join them in that same condition! Revelations 20:15

I have to present something as I see it in the Word...
This Jeremiah 7:31 is not talking about using fire as punishment by God.

But it is talking about using humans for sacrifice by/through fire....

if using fire as punishment by God never came to His mind,
then the story of/about Sodom and Gomorrah is fake.

Let's check from the Word:

*. Leviticus 18:21 "And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord."

*. Deuteronomy 18:10 "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch."

*. 2kings 17:17 "And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger."

*. 2kings 21:6 " And he made his son pass through the fire, and observed times, and used enchantments, and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards: he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger."

*. Jeremiah 7:31 "And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart."

*. Jeremiah 32:35 " And they built the high places of Baal, which are in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to cause their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire unto Molech ; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my mind, that they should do this abomination, to cause Judah to sin."

We have to know the difference between human sacrifice by fire for God and
human punishment with fire by God ...

Can God punish humans with literal fire?

Let's see from the Word:

* Genesis 19:24 "Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven;"

*. Luke 17:29 "But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven , and destroyed them all."

*. Matthew 25:41 "Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:"

*. 2peter 3:10 "But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up ."

The Word agrees that God can use for to punish humans...

Whoever feels he or she is more merciful than God for this His decision... No problem

Hell fire is real and literal !!!

Not me in the real sense of it, but the op. Thant's what I understand from the below:

Is it written that sinners shall be tormented forever? No, it is not written. What then is written? The scriptures confirm that sinners will be continuously tormented just as we see in the myths of other religions, however, this continuous torment will only last till the sinful soul is destroyed (utterly)....

Therefore, the idea of eternal torment is not biblical, it is a horrible imagination used to instill fear and anger in the minds of those who do not understand the judgment of God. It is often mistaken for eternal destruction, the judgment of God on sinners.

Is there a difference? Yes, there is. What is the difference? Destruction is the process or act to damage something so that it no longer exists – to cause (through damage) to inexist. Therefore, eternal destruction means to cause to inexist forever. But torment means to to exist but be in agony, and eternal torment means to exist forever but be in continuous pain. These are two different concepts.
Religion / Re: Will We Still Believe In Jesus In These Situations? by KNOWMORE56: 6:29pm On Dec 31, 2022
knowingChrist:
Some of the critical questions popularly asked by irreligious persons are: would we (Christians) still believe-in Jesus if we find out that he’s never coming back? Would we still follow the laws of faith if we find that the man Jesus was just a made up story in history?

It is natural for us to respond emotionally to these kind of questions (usually to shift the focus of the discussion), but the truth is: we will have to ask ourselves these kind of questions at some points in our walk of faith; we have to critically analyze our beliefs, ideologies, and definitions to see if they’re worth defending.

Answers to questions of these such do not only serve as response to unbelievers, but they more importantly reveal our understanding of what we are doing with our lives; our understanding of the good news. They also reveal our true intent and desires towards the faith of God, and our sense of judgment.

What would we do if we find out that there’s no consequence whatsoever for unrighteousness? Would we continue to live as the bible suggests, or would we change our lifestyle?

The term righteousness means to live (act) rightly. Therefore, the righteousness of God is to live (act) in the way that God considers right. As Christians, we have been encouraged to live in God’s righteousness (that is: to live beyond what we consider right, but live as God considers right). In fact, a Christians is one who loves righteousness (God’s).

The reason many of us consider righteousness as a viable way of life is mainly because of the consequence that we hear exists for unrighteousness, without which righteousness will sound unattainable and stupid to us. Our approach to righteousness is negative; we do not live rightly because we love and enjoy the right way of life, we only live rightly because we fear the consequence for living wrongly.

Alas, negative approach cannot produce positive effect. The impact of negative approach to righteousness is difficulty and struggle; it becomes a struggle for us to live rightly, whereas, the burden of righteousness is easy. The lack of love for the right way of life causes us to struggle; we struggle to live rightly. Righteousness is the nature of God, as we have been born by God, we too by our nature should live rightly. It should be the easiest thing for us to do.

We do not struggle to eat, speak, see, feel, or hear because these things are natural. In fact, struggling or not being able to do these things at all is an indication of a defective birth or a disease. Similarly, struggling or not being able to do righteousness indicates that a person is diseased; in sin and not in God.

We do not struggle to eat food, speak about football, watch movies, get on social media because we enjoy and love these things. Our struggle to live rightly indicates we do not love or enjoy doing what’s right; we do not love the nature of God, which means we do not love the nature of our new birth, and if by chance we live rightly, we are only doing so to avoid the consequence of unrighteousness.

This should not be the case, living rightly should be the only reasonable way of life to a Christian. The wrong way should be unreasonable to us. For example, it should be easier for us to tell the truth than to lie simply because we are born by the spirit of truth, and the only reasonable thing to do. Lying should be unreasonable to us.

A Christian by understanding sees the benefits of righteousness, he lives rightly because he loves these benefits. He sees no benefit whatsoever in unrighteousness, so refuses to live wrongly because it is basically a waste of time, resources and essence to live in a way that affords no benefit to the soul. This is irrespective of whether or not the unrighteous shall be punished.

Therefore, although there are some of us who will plunge into unrighteousness if they discover that it attracts no consequence, we should all grow to the level that living rightly is our only option of life; we should grow to the level that we consume righteousness, and abhor unrighteousness.
How would we feel if we find that no one will burn for eternity? Would we be contented with this judgment or would we feel bitter because sinners are not going to be in agony forever?

One of the peripheral reasons why some irreligious persons hate the good news is because of the said punishment that awaits sinners. They see the judgment of eternal torment as unfair and totally wicked. This makes them question God’s sense of judgment and the motive of the Christian faith.

This particular judgment (eternal torment) is not peculiar to Christianity, it is quite popular in ancient myths, and a norm in the Abrahamic religions. Quite often, when we get quizzed for our faith, we tend to remind irreligious persons of this said judgment, and this more often infuriates them further to hate Christ.

For us to really discuss how we will feel if sinners are not tormented in fire forever, we must first research the scriptures to see if there’s any such judgment in the books. For it is irrelevant to discuss a topic without first establishing the truth of the scriptures.

Is it written that sinners shall be tormented forever? No, it is not written. What then is written? The scriptures confirm that sinners will be continuously tormented just as we see in the myths of other religions, however, this continuous torment will only last till the sinful soul is destroyed (utterly).

Sinners are diseased (in their thoughts), this is why each Christian needed to be healed by the stripe of Jesus. The fire (of the end) shall be created and released to destroy every diseased cell. Each sinner shall be burned till every cell of their existence is dissipated and destroyed till they become just ash (Malachi 4:3), and smoke from their ash shall rise to the heavens forever (Revelation 14:11).

So then, let us welcome this judgment (eternal destruction). In fact, let us be happy that no one is going to be diseased forever, and the fire shall save them from eternal regret. Anything short of this is unjust, for who imagines eternal agony for someone else without questioning such judgment? Perhaps a wicked person or a person too scared to question such judgment.

Would we continue to live like Christ if we find that Jesus is not coming back for us? Would we still be excited to tell people about the Christly life?
Well, we’ve already defined why we live the Christly life, we think it is reasonable and living contrary is unreasonable. So, yes, we’ll should continue to live the Christly life even if we find that Jesus isn’t coming back.

Although Jesus is definitely coming back, in a hypothetical situation where he doesn’t, we should condition our minds to continue this life and encourage others to live like us because we are convinced this is the only right way to live. We should be like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego who though trusted they will be saved, will not compromise even if there is no salvation (Daniel 3:16-18).

We should not live the Christly life because we were told that we’d be saved sometime in the future, we should live because we are convinced of its righteousness. Salvation happens to us through this life. It is important to note that salvation is not the promise, the Holy Spirit is the promise, and salvation is a consequence. For the just (righteous) shall live by faith, and salvation happens through the faith they (the just) live by.

Thank you for reading, enjoy your holidays…

Well, my own opinion is that:
if eternal punishment for unrepentant sinners
means some limited years in their punishment...

Then, eternal Life for the repented sinners is going to be in the same explanation!

I'm also convinced that whatever happens to Satan will equally happen to his servants.

For him and his demons to have lived this long without being eliminated, it means they are also granted eternity!

The scientific ideology that says " energy can only be created but cannot be eliminated " is going to play out!

The human soul or life is an energy, it can never be eliminated!

But if eternity for sinners shall end one day,
then, be sure eternity for saints shall equally end one day!

What's these rambling all about?
Are you preaching or by any chance doing advertisement?
Just asking.

Rambling, preaching, advertisement?

How I wish you have been able gathered people to buy and follow your ideology successfully.

Your inability to do that makes you pour out your anger on people who, through whatever means, have gotten to where they are.

First I didn't judge anyone in my post. The spirit gives one ability to discern and that is just what hav been revealed.

1st, your post was pointing out how some people are doing some things wrongly...

In my post I opined that the very thing you're doing or pointing out to be the right thing/way, it's been criticised/classified as wrong by others - it is funny to me that each person or group often see their counterparts as on the wrong while they are right!

Discernment is for personal use unlike knowledge, what you've done is more or less a display of knowledge than discernment.

And the instance you sited has nothing to do with someone being gullible and robbed of his sweat, thank you.

The instance in summary is: do/practice/provide the right thing 1st. It saves us from much talk.

By the time you are able to gather more followers ( who shall not be tag gullible) then you have won!

To gather together these people you called gullible it never a child's play...

if you double, start and we'll see how far...

it is funny to me that each person or group often see their counterparts as gullible...
Free thinkers see believers in Christ as gullible and robbed of knowledge....!

Also let me ask you a question, will you continue keep being oppressed all in the name of I don't Wang to judge anyone syndrome. Didn't your Bible teach you to chastise??

It is in your knowledge that you see it as an oppression and somebody is seeing you also as been oppressed in the thing you choose to obey

You are not a born again; It is fine. But you want to know who a fake prophet is, here is the best way. It is very simple, you can never hear these so called prophet, pastors, teachers and yen yen Nigerian MOG utter the name; Jesus Christ. You will only hear stuffs like I deliver you in the name of Jesus. You are healed in the name of Jesus. I can see the color of your panties and the color is pink in the name of Jesus. I heard Jesus told me to tell you to bring 2000 Naira and 23 Naira to represent thy blessings for 2023, and the mumu congregation will mumuish bring the money. This is a ministry of faith and it was given to me in the mountain, as you have faith and redeem your thithe your life will not be tight in Jesus name, mumu congregation will say, Amen.
So people of God the name Jesus might be an ordinary name not everyone can utter that name Jesus Christ and go without being punished immediately. In 2023 don't be robbed of your sweat by these 98% of fake prophets and teachers we have in Nigeria. The 98% are only interested in your pocket and nothing else. Happy New Year Eve.

The funny thing here is that many of you who go about telling people who is fake or not are fake in the eyes of your accusers also.

The proven way of countering any fake thing is by providing, presenting and practicing the genuine ones...

In the state where I'm staying, the government threatened to stop L300 bus and its like and replace them with mini bus.

I said, just provide one or two of the mini bus and let the people choose...

Gradually, the mini bus replaced the other ones without condemning the previous buses...

The people discovered that the mini bus is faster and gives more space/ allowance...

Today as I'm typing, the mini buses is charging higher than the L300 buses...

many of us still prefer to pay higher to enter the mini buses....

Go and do the same...by providing, presenting and practicing the genuine one

Must one be there to know the conditions of a place?

The distance of Mars to the Sun is too far off to allow for clouds formation.

That's just common sense, Oga.

"Must one be there to know the conditions of a place?"
Hmm, what a powerful and meaningful statement...

But some people want to see God before they will agree He is...

Some people want to get to Hell fire before they will agree it exists or a place of everlasting torment...

Religion / Re: The Christian's Job: Why You're Here On Earth by KNOWMORE56: 7:16am On Dec 03, 2022
Ihedinobi3:
1.0 Introduction: The Excellence of the Gospel
You believe that Jesus Christ -- God Who put on humanity to become one of us -- died for your sins. Hallelujah! You're a Christian, a child of God entitled to a share in His Eternal Wealth. This is the most important thing in the world.

If you managed to build an empire like Alexander’s Greek wonder or acquire wealth the size of Jeff Bezos's or gain the strength of Samson or the beauty of a lily or attain the wisdom of Solomon, it would amount to exactly nothing if you are not one of God's children. Everything in this world fades or crumbles to dust eventually. Even we who work so hard to acquire those things inevitably die. So the best we can have without God's adoption of us as His children is a few short years of reckless pleasure and then death.

It is rather easy to be glib about death when anyone makes the choice to devote their earthly lives to the pursuit of sensual pleasure, but the reality of death is always remote until we are right on the brink of it. It is in that moment when we know that we will actually die that the reality of the meaninglessness of such a pursuit weighs on us like a leaden anchor.

Those who have chosen to believe in Jesus Christ have by definition dismissed the standards of this world and chosen to pursue the wealth and pleasures of the world to come. Of course, this is not always how it plays out practically. In fact, most Christians refuse to make a clean break with this world's cares and pleasures. Nor is there ever a perfect Christian who has not or will not occasionally fall prey to this world's seductions and threats (James 3:2). Regardless of this, a Christian is at core a person who has rejected this world in favor of the one that God promises.

As such, Christians are also by definition people who do not fear death. Death is for them just a transition from this world of pain to a better state of existence. So the choice to be a Christian is actually the whole point of human existence here on earth. That you made it means that you have justified your own existence on this planet. Good for you.

That choice to be a Christian, however, is only the beginning of a journey. It is because of that journey that this choice is so important. When we fail to pursue that journey, the choice to be a Christian becomes almost a mockery even if it is still an infinitely better choice than the one to remain opposed to God.

May God give us the grace to end well! Amen
