PoliticsRe: Floating Of Naira Caused Hardship For Nigerians, Not Subsidy Removal – Expert by Kobojunkie: 4:43pm On Oct 19, 2024
Omooba77:
A financial expert, Dr. Olutayo Obadina, has said that the government’s floating of the Naira is the cause of the current hardship being faced by Nigerians and not the fuel subsidy removal.
Obadina, a PhD holder in Credit and Financial Management, stated this during a news conference in Lagos on Friday.
In his address titled “The Mathematics of Fuel Subsidy: A Critical Look at the Problem and Solution in Nigeria Today,” Obadina argued that the key to reducing fuel prices and easing inflation lies in stabilizing the Naira, rather than reinstating fuel subsidies.
According to Obadina, the Federal Government should focus on reducing Nigeria’s reliance on imports by promoting exports, which would help stabilize the Naira.
He recommended bringing down the Naira-to-dollar exchange rate from the current N1600/$1 to around N460/$1, which he believes would lead to a significant reduction in fuel prices to about N450 per litre.
The real problem and ways out. Emphasizing that the current economic hardship is not a direct result of the removal of the fuel subsidy but rather the consistent devaluation of the Naira, Obadina said:
“The real issue is the devaluation of the Naira. The dollar cost of importing fuel has remained relatively stable over the years, while the Naira continues to weaken. “Strengthening the Naira is the only sustainable solution to Nigeria’s economic problems.”
Obadina also criticized the decision to float the Naira, arguing that it has only exacerbated the country’s economic woes.
He called on President Bola Tinubu to reverse this policy and return to a fixed exchange rate, which would help stabilize fuel prices and curb inflation.

■ Please, I am a bit confused...Why is the bag of Rice 97,000 and why does it keep increasing?
What is the government doing to arrest this? Are they aware? Rice apart, where is the import duty removal on food? Why is food becoming a commodity so expensive that a common man cannot afford it? Please, if you have answers, kindly respond.
Your government is playing on you all the same game that IBB played on Nigerians during SAP. IBB lied that he was busy implementing SAP reforms when in fact he was instead busy looting Nigeria's oil money and blaming all the suffering that resulted on SAP and IMF. This present government is running the same scam on the Nigerian people. It is busy looting Nigeria's resources— since they don loot the money finish— while it continues to lie to you that it is working on reforms on which it then has you blaming your sufferings on. undecided

I didn't get it from my first read.. Wow! I think it's too harsh oh!
Parenting is more resolve than skill. I can't even think of any skill off the top of my head one really has to have in order to be a parent. So long as one has enough resources to capably provide a better quality of life to the child, and the mental makeup to achieve that, one is bound to and would be a successful parent. Examine Sections 214 and Sections 217 in the Constitution. Just as section 214 requires the creation of one Police Force, Section 217 also requires the creation of exactly one armed force in Nigeria. However, section 217 goes on to list that one armed force must consist of at least an army, a navy, and an Air Force. It is right there in the same Consitution. One Armed force, consisting of different arms. undecided

The answers you seek is already right there in your constitution. The problem is Nigerians, especially the lawyers in Nigeria, are driven by their private desires even in their very undersandig of the very Law that is meant to rule all citizens in Nigeria. undecided

■ Now ur getting the argument right, since Nigeria police force (NPF) a law enforcement agency created by the constitution of the federal Republic with jurisdiction over all the federation
■ , EFFC and other law enforcement agencies in the country should also be domesticated in the constitution so it will have validity known to LAW sir, Which is the CONSTITUTION
Wrong! The Nigerian Police Force was instead created by the Police Act which was amended in 2020— Police Act 2020— by the Law makers in Nigeria.

The Constitution instead required the existence of a Police Force in the Country. The makeup, and number of arms(agencies that comprise Law enforcement, etc.), of that Police Force, however, was left to the decision of the Lawmakers. The decision of the Lawmakers to create several arms for the Police Force(NPF, EFCC, DSS, ICPC...) is well within that defined by the Supreme Law of the Land. undecided

The United States can be used as an example here. When it comes to Federal Law enforcement, there are at least 80 different agencies — DHS, CIA, FBI, Coast Guard, ICE, Office of the Inspector General....(there are so many of them, and they are all part of Federal Law enforcement. undecided

■ The point here is the jurisdiction of EFFC operation since it's not domesticated in constitution of the federal Republic... Do they have powers to carry out operations within the confines of the law!!!
Federalism means absolutely nothing in this case since the Nigerian Police Force(EFCC an arm of it) is not a federalism-based entity, to begin with. undecided

■ If u don't know what to say keep quiet.... How did the EFFC came about? Have you checked.... Its an assignment for you...Go and read the case instituted against the EFFC by the 16 states Attorney generals... At the supreme court Illiteracy is a big disease....
Let me Educate you a bit, EFFC be came an organisation in Nigeria in early 2000s when FMR president Obasanjo was seeking for debt forgiveness for Nigeria from Paris club and co, part of the requirements was that Nigeria will join an international anti graft agency by signing the convention treaty and establish an anti corrupt institution.. So the president Obasanjo then hurriedly did and EFFC was created by an act of the national assembly with out domesticating in the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria which has component federating units of 36 states, which means for an EFFC or Icpc to be fully valid like Nigeria police force ( law enforcement) the act establishing it must pass through 36 states houses of Assembly if not it's has no jurisdiction under an state in Nigeria now, hence it's an illegal organization not know to law... That's what Agbakoba SAN is saying And Falana SAN also hinted by saying that the national assembly should enact a law backing EFFC in the closing latter on the same issues... Question now is ?who shout himself on the leg U can now answer yourself

■ You seems not to understand what federalism is all about. For an agency to be called a true federal agency,
■ it must be supported by at least 2/3 of the 36 states House of Assemblies.
This is the bottom line of the arguments, the States House of Assemblies were not part of the establishment.
I am afraid you are instead the one who does not understand what Federalism is in fact about. I suggest you instead spend some time doing some studying on google before you continue here, please. undecided

2. By 2/3rd support, I suspect you instead refer to section 12(3) of the Constitution , right? That section has nothing to do with Federalism by the way. It instead has to do with the enactment of treaties i.e. making of laws. This also does not apply in this place since the EFCC Act of 2002 was enacted in 2002 by law, and not as part of any treaty. The amendment of the same Act which happened in 2004 does not constitute an enactment. or making of laws. Rather, it has to do with amendment of existing law and that is not covered by Section 12 of the Constitution. undecided

■ The above argument have been tested in the apex court already in the case of Nwobike vs FGN 👇
The Supreme court can easily change its mind after examining the other side of this which is that there is no direct mention of the treaty or any association with a treaty in the document itself coupled with the fact that the Act was meant as a replacement to a previously existing Act. undecided

Nigeria already had an EFCC Act 2002 — 2 years before the UNCAC Treaty —which was then replaced with the EFCC Act 2004. EFCC 2004 is claimed as the amendment that was made to comply with UNCAC in 2004 but EFCC existed before UNCAC. undecided

Though it’s clear to all that this is actually corruption trying to fight back, carefully read the above, to see the actual bone of contention - Subsection three(3) of section 12 of the constitution was avoided during enactment of the Efcc act, the state government found this loophole and are trying to exploit it...
Interesting argument they make. However, if you examine the EFCC Act of 2004 itself, you will find that it was established as a replacement for the former Financial Crimes Commissions Act of 2002 rather than as an implementation of the UNCAC or UN treaty mentioned in the report above. The 25-page document that is the EFCC Act of 2024 contains no reference to UNCAC Or the United Nations. undecided

A good lawyer can easily argue that the bill does not in any way connect to Section 12(2) and so no way section 12(3) need not apply at all, but my concern is this is a waste of the people's time and resources. undecided

■ IGP FROWNS AT ALLEGED CASES OF POLICE HIGH-HANDEDNESS, EXTORTION.
Reassures Nigerians of Leadership’s Zero Tolerance for Corrupt Practices Amongst Officers
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has expressed concerns and condemnation on the alleged cases of extortion and high-handedness perpetrated by certain recalcitrant members of the Nigeria Police Force. The IGP made this known while addressing Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, Commissioners of Police, and heads of various formations at the IGP’s Conference with Senior Police Officers held at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan International Peacekeeping Hall, Force Headquarters, Abuja recently.
The IGP, during his speech, charged the senior officers on proper supervision of the activities of officers at their various levels and ensure the highest standard of professional conduct is maintained and upheld in the course of carrying out their lawful duties. The IGP also ordered the IGP X-Squad, Monitoring Unit, Complaint Response Unit (CRU) and other disciplinary Units to carry out routine checks on the activities of officers across the country as part of efforts to curb misconduct and corruption tendencies amongst officers, and ensure strict punishment is meted on erring officers; and that supervisory officers found wanting in this regard will not be spared of vicarious liability.
This is coming from the same man who operates the Nigerian police as though it is his own private mafia to wield and deploy — mostly against the interest of the Nigerian people whom the organization is tasked with protecting and serving— as he chooses or according to the whims of his political paymasters? ■ This argument does not make sense just because you want efcc dead. You may advocate for overhauling of the commission but not federalism wahala.
Why are states not having their police, conduct election for themselves, have their own police and army? In US, we have the FBI and many central agents that carry out their duties regardless of any unit of the country.
What you should advocate is that efcc should be independent of the executive and also should investigate the federal government itself
EFCC already has the power to investigate even the FG. The major problem however is the very same corruption and abuse of power you find in every agency across all of Nigeria. And these are issues that cannot simply be legislated away. There are currently checks and balances in the system. The problem remains that they mostly go unimplemented and unused. Why? Corruption from the bottom up and from the top down. undecided
