Car Talk / Re: Has Anyone Ever Converted A Toyota Corolla From Manual To Automatic? by Kokomo: 6:29pm On Oct 31, 2021
Cousin9999:
The only person I can recall (atm) doing that is Kobe Bryant. He either converted a luxury sports car or had it specially made automatic for his spouse.

I don't see why someone of average means would attempt that besides experimenting, and certainly not on a vehicle that's meant to be road ready.

Well done boss. I don't have a shop o.

I remember having this same exact experience. Mine even went north of -19LTFT and tripped the P0172. There's no troubleshooting I didn't do: checked fuel pressure, examined injectors for leaks, etc. That was when I bought a compression gauge. Only to change where I bought petrol from, and voila, the thing started coming down on its own and the code left.
Our fuel here is legendary o. In the meanwhile, I suggest you change where you buy fuel from, and let's see.

Hey bro, I change where I buy fuel but I still get high negatve fuel trim

No it wasn't via email.
It popped up after I submitted.
Did you take the test too?

yes, I also only got the pop up response. I was worried when I checked my email and I didn't receive message as well.

So I applied for the role of User Operations Specialist (Chargeback Operations) at paystack and was sent a mail to write a short Assessment test (conducted by indeed). I followed the link and it was stated that the questions were sample questions/warm up test. I rounded up the test and was expecting to see the real test questions, but I got a response that my test result has been sent.
Please I'll like to know if this is same for anyone who has taken the short Assessment test so far. Thanks

Hi, Please the response you got after completing the test, was it via email ?

You will need a professional to do proper diagnosis.

I paid a professional to do the job, we threw everything at it, las las nothing worked, we suggest another ECU , but all in all , had to give up and drive the car like that, the issue is a tough one, almost unsolvable...I think

I want to buy my first car. Am not really vast in autos and cars and thier models. any advice on how to go about it will help. Your suggestion too will be kindly appreciated. Not forgetting how to know car history and engine specifications
Car in mind: corrolla (fuel economy and easy to maintain)
Budget: 1.9-2m (but can go up to 2.3)
Car condition: direct toks. Not salvaged or accidented

Though I am an Honda person, but for a first car, I will recommend corolla 03 to 07

What error codes do you get when you scan?

I get P0172 at time, when I clear it , it doesnt re-appear till about a month. I notice slight misfire though, P0304 very rare, I think is due to the Rich condition.

I am considering a compression test on all the cylinders, hopefully it is not a case of worn or fauty engine due to rings or gasket.

Will keep the house update,

But if you have any other pointers, please assist

Bro , you are right oh, this issue is a very tough one to correct, I have been battling with it with the help of a techy friend, we have checked most of the sensors , even used lab scope to diagonise ssome more, no fault find thus far , yet my fuel trim LTFT and STFT are shooting above -17 to -20 all the time. Mehn it is crazy, I almost want to believe this is a problem that happen to all Honda with age.

Perhaps the car uses a higher octane fuel? I have tried other fuel station though.

I did read somehere (oyinbo Honda civic forum) that I might be able to correct it by getting a flashpro manager, a device that allows one to recalibrate the OEM ECU settings. I doubt if those can be found in Naija though

It’s only in Nigeria that 2006 corolla would be more expensive than 2012 Audi undecided

Corolla is seen more as an asset, when used for ehailing. Well Engineered, little or no known electrical issues, durable and easy to find parts and skilled technicians. I don't think Audi would be viewed in the same way. But to someone looking for luxury and performace, sure deal.

Thanks @Dru23, so should I just stick to this one he has been using or I change the oil next service? The gear oil though looks a very clean as it was recently serviced.

I am still open to more opinions, thanks.

@luvinhubby

@komomo

@Gazzuz

If you can still return the car please do, but if you cant then continue using the engine oil used by the previous owner, the car want die. change the gear oil back to the original gear oil, if it packs up at least you can get another gearbox, I will take this risk rather than let the wrong gear oil used by the previous owner damage things further. Just bite the bullet.

similar issue here, but a higher version of Camry. I don't usually use coolant. I just need to keep refilling water max 3days. No over-heating yet.

perhaps a blown head gasket, do you notice any misfire? when idling or driving?

Mostly not correct. Connecting the fan directly and using water as coolant iare certainly not advisable but making an assumption that such an engine would pack up in '3 months' is certainly an exaggeration. Many people I know have used their cars thatN way for several years without any problems..Many have equally bought cars directly from overseas but drove straight into trouble within weeks. A car should be inspected before purchase and the general state of the engine should evaluated by scanning, test driving and general checks. Bad connections can be reversed and wrong fluids changed to the right ones, if the car checks out fine at the point of purchase.

Read what I wrote carefully, I said "as if" , I didnt say it will pack-up definitlely. When buying a Nigeria used car, one should thread carefully, hope for the best and do a little preparation for the worst. And yes, what you said are valid.

Isn’t it majorly in its 6cyl versions that the transmissions were prone to issues? I think the 4 plugs own were stable at the time

I am an Honda guy, but for the 03 to 07 year, I will go for the accord, 06 or 07 at least. Yes the gear is sensitve but cheap, but the engine is rugged and cheap. The camry engine is sensitive but more expensive, one overheating can destroy the engine, the transmssion of 03 to 04 is rugged, the transnsmion of 05 to 06 is sensitive and expensive.

For the accord go for the cloth interior not leather. Do leg check every 4 month.... Odiegwu

Thanks bro. I took it to Mot...i and nothing came out of it, they didn't touch anything, just visual inspection and explanations which they didn't get and I'll never allow anyone to remove my thermostat.
As for the fan, it's still automatic, come up intermittently, but I noticed that the noise is now longer after running AC unlike before.
I think the radiator could be the culprit. First it was leaking when it came into the country and it was fixed early last year at First gate. There's no visible leakage since then. But I've swam many floods this season. Igboefon and New Road floods! Perhaps it's time to start from the known to the unknown. Could be there are clogs and air bubbles in the radiator.
I think I heard Gazzuz talk about pressure tests for the radiator and hose, not so sure. Anyway I'll try and work on it this week, probably at Gazzuz.
The car is actually a 1.8L I4 EFI
aiit boss, keep us posted

Thank you sir. I'm planning of getting a Nigerian used 07 this week. The seller said he bought it last year for his mom. Still first body etc. But I'm totally new to auto world. Please any advice for me? I no wan shit for body

Avoid the version made for African and Asian , parts are more expensive they have more issues though I dnt know why , buy the american version, go with an Honda rewire guy, not necessarily mechanic, please scan, check if the emission status are all ready, if not drive the car until the status are ready, at leat the 02 sensor and the catalyst, if the radiator fan is connected directly or no thermostat or water used as coolant , please price the car as though you will replace the engine in 3 month, luckily the engine at 130kish is not as expensive as corolla 320kish. Drive the car on a free way and ensure all the gears shift perfectly, check the bushen and engine mount for cracks. Check power steering for leak. Price accordingly

Good day gurus.

Please between Honda civic, Honda city and Honda accord, which is more preferably for Uber hustle in terms of durability and fuel economy wise?

Thanks in anticipation

Go for Civic, and if you want one that is close to corolla ruggedness go for the 2003 to 2005... the only downside is it transmssion, but can be minimise if you use manuafacturer's fluid. The other option is the 2006 to 2011, no major downside, transmsission and engine are ok, just the suspension (control arm bushen, engine mount, shock setup) not as durable as the 2003 to 2005 but can be minismised my driving carefully around rough road, bump and pot hole. It also has more sensors which are inter-connected, unlike corolla , any issue with one sensor can seriously affect your fuel consumption or car performace, so ensure you have a scanner and a passion for doing little research before for you drop the car for the rewire or mechanic otherwise they will mess things up for you. Also find and keep a trusted part seller, luvinghubby is one. Stick with tokunbo parts than new ones.

I use the 2007, and I follow the rules, it iis better than corolla if you do.

Good evening Mr. Gazzuzz, kingreign, Nurey and my fellow nairalanders…
Please I recently got a Toks 2013 Camry but I noticed the car vibrates when I engage the reverse gear, it stops when in Drive…
What could be the issue sir

Start by getting your engine mount checked and replaced if needed. Hopefully this fixes the vibration. As long as your gears selact perfetly of course.

You're so spot on!
I had an overheating once, there was water in the radiator and yet... Tried to diagnose with a mechanic nearby to no avail and I just continued.....

That engine just need to overheat once for it to fry in most cases, There was a design flaw with it. Hope the technician did not run your radiator fan direct and remove your thermostat, these only hide the problem until it gets worst. In the meantime, check if your thermostat is still there , check if the water pump is faulty , check if radiator is clogged/dirty, check radiator hose all the way to your heater core, upper and lower hose, could be blocked or torn, then your fan check if they come on and off automatic at optimal temperature, this would involve troubleshooting the electrical parts fuses, relay, switch coolant temperature sensor(s) etc.

All these checks are necessary to avoid a repeat of the issue once the overheating issue gets fixed.

I am more of an Honda person, dont have a toyota technician that I can recommend, but do try and find someone that can help do the head gasket fix , hopefully no warping around the head and if so, you woould need a machinist to help smooth them out . I pray this fix your issue, in worst cases just one overheating do total some of these engines.

Keep the house update,

Wao. I wonder how much that will cost to fix.
The additional bolded information in the image below confirms the head gasket leak

I suspect tht you have the below type of corolla 2.4liter engine? not as reliable as the 1.8liter version, confirm if you had an overheating issue sometime ago. If so you will also need to check if the head mating surfaces are warped.

Also do you use water or coolant, if water then also check if coolant passage in the block are corroded.

Were can I buy from with guarantee that it won’t break down in 6 months

Go to Oyinbo, Go specifically to the Black gate warehouse, go with a mechanic, ensure it is tokunbo, try not to go for the cheapest, e get why. If you need help around Oyingbo, talk to luvinhubby, you will be fine.

Honda 98 to 2005 are usually better with manual transmission, very very bulletproof

Hello Gazzuz,
My car corolla 2010 coolant disappears every two to four days and there's no visible leakage. Recently I noticed a bubbling sound at the coolant reservoir. What could be the case and how can this be rectified.
I've checked the hoses ad radiator cap and can't seem to find any leaks

Most likely head gasket , since you can see bubbles in the reservoir which indicates exhaust gas getting into the coolant, get the head gasket checked for damage and replace

Before that check your oil for chocolate millky colour that should indicate if the head gasket bad and coolant is mixing with your oil

or Raise the engine RPM to oberve if you see a white smoke, this would indicate if head gasket is bad and coolant is burning in the combustion chamber.... This is most likely the case based on your description
