In view of the nine-month-old strike embarked on by lecturers in public universities, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has said it plans to engage with the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). The new President of NANS, Mr. Sunday Asefon, revealed this during his maiden press conference in Abuja on Monday. He said that the planned engagement would be aimed at prevailing on them to find a centre point for amicable resolution of the current impasse. According to Asefon, the apex student body, under his watch, would not be complicit to unending strike. While describing the strike as ridiculous, he expressed optimism that the planned consultation with both parties would yield a positive result. He said, “Again, I assure Nigerian students of my resolve to do all within my abilities to protect our interests, place the interest and welfare of Nigerian students above all considerations and reposition our association to take its rightful place in the centre of our nation’s polity. “To this end, I will immediately set out to engage stakeholders within the education sector to add our strong voice against the overstayed ASUU strike. “We will be consulting with the representatives of the Federal Government and ASUU with the aim of prevailing on them to find a centre point for an amicable resolution to ensure our return to school. ”The engagement is going to be now and not later. ASUU strike started before the COVID-19 pandemic. We are convinced that this high-level consultation will yield a positive result and we will not have to resort to mobilising students to mount any protest to this ridiculous long stay at home. He added that NANS would also fight against arbitrary expulsion, suspension, and rustication of students for dissent and peaceful protest. However, the Asefon distanced the association from the second phase of the #EndSARS protests. “We are not going to be part of any protest that doesn’t have leadership. We are not part of #RevolutionNow,” he stated. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/12/strike-nans-to-engage-with-fg-ASUU-on-resolving-impasse/

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), on Monday, said his regime will deal decisively with “any act of hooliganism hiding behind peaceful protests.” He said although his regime believed in the rights of citizens to embark on peaceful protests, such must be done responsibly. Buhari stated these while virtually declaring open the Chief of Army Staff’s Annual Conference 2020 from the Presidential Villa, Abuja. At a time when there are reports of possible repeat of the recent #EndSARS protests, Buhari regretted the violence that trailed the last protests. He said, “Let me also mention the EndSARS protest which was recently hijacked by hoodlums which resulted in loss of lives and property in many situations across the country. “I want to reiterate our government’s commitment to the rights of citizens to embark on peaceful protests. “However, this must be done responsibly in accordance with the laws of the land. “I also want to state that any act of hooliganism hiding behind the peaceful protests, will be highly dealt with decisively to ensure the peace and stability of our nation. “On this note, I commend the Nigeria Army for their efforts to swiftly restore law and order in many states during the last scale of criminality that ensued in the wake of the EndSARS protests.” The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, later released a statement quoting Buhari as describing 2020 as a very challenging year. He said the President cited the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and its negative impact on almost every aspect of national life. ”Despite this, I am pleased to note that the Army remained resolute in the discharge of its Constitutional roles and in keeping the wealth and welfare of our soldiers a priority. ”The Army’s support of civil authorities in the management of the COVID – 19 pandemic is a case in point. ”Also, the peaceful elections conducted in Edo and Ondo States would not have been achieved without the high level of professionalism displayed by all security agencies, including the Army,” Buhari said at the conference themed, ‘Human Capacity Development in Sustaining Professionalism and Responsiveness of the Nigerian Army in the Discharge of its Constitutional Roles.’ The President also commended the Army for what he called its unwavering commitment towards curtailing the activities of insurgents, armed bandits, kidnappers, cattle rustlers and other violent criminals through ongoing exercises and operations in different parts of the country. He said the Exercise SAHEL SANITY launched a few months ago in the North West states to rid the Katsina-Zamfara corridor of marauding bandits had recorded commendable progress. Buhari added, “I have also been briefed about the tremendous successes that have been achieved by troops during the ongoing Operation FIRE BALL in the North East. ”I charge you all to sustain these efforts until the full restoration of peace and security in the nation is achieved.” Buhari also paid tribute to men and women in uniform who have paid the supreme sacrifice in the defence and security of the nation, commiserating with their families, comrades and friends. ”As we pray for the repose of their souls, we must strengthen our collective resolve to address those issues that will make every part of our country a safe and secure place to live and carry out our normal business,” he said. He pledged that his regime will not relent in its efforts to take adequate care of families of fallen heroes who had paid the supreme sacrifice in the fight against insurgency and other forms of crimes across the country. At the conference, the President launched the Housing scheme for Next of Kin of personnel of the Nigerian Army killed in action. ”It is in line with this that the Army as part of its welfare initiative and in line with the Federal Government’s housing programme is undertaking the Housing Scheme for families and next of kin of troops that were killed in action in the fight against insurgency and other criminalities in the country. ”I believe this initiative will act as a huge morale booster to the troops on the frontlines as well as project the Army in good light. ”On our part, I assure you that this administration will continue to do all within available resources to provide for your operational and welfare needs,” he said. https://punchng.com/fresh-protests-any-act-of-hooliganism-will-be-dealt-with-says-buhari/

THE legal fireworks over the result of the October 10 governorship election in Ondo State won by Governor Rotimi Akeredolu will begin tomorrow at the Governorships Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Akure, the state capital. The candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Eyitayo Jegede had filed a petitioned against Akeredolu, who was declared winner of the October 10, 2020 Election by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, at the tribunal headed by Justice Umar Abubakar. Justice Abubakar would lead two other judges to hear the petition filed by Jegede as from tomorrow, December 8. Election Tribunals are established pursuant to section 285 of the Nigerian 1999 Constitution (as Amended) and section 133 of the Electoral Act 2011 (as Amended) to address disputes arising from Elections. Jegede through his lead counsel, Onyechi Ikpeazu, SAN had dragged the All Progressives Congress, APC and Governor Akeredolu before the tribunal to answer for alleged infractions against the laws of the land. One of the grounds of the petition is that Akeredolu was not validly nominated by his party APC. By the provisions of section 183 of the 1999 Constitution, a serving Governor of a State (in this case, Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni) cannot serve as the National Chairman of APC at the same time to nominate Akeredolu as candidate of their party for the Ondo Elections. Section 183 states “The Governor shall not, during the period when he holds office, hold any other executive office or paid employment in any capacity whatsoever”. Jegede is saying that “Akeredolu was not validly nominated and as such APC had no candidate for the Ondo Election. He added that “Article 17 section iv of the APC Constitution also provides that, any official of the party cannot simultaneously occupy any other executive office in government. ” It states further that “No officer in any organ of the party shall hold executive position office in government concurrently”. Again Buni ran foul of this provision. Jegede also posited that ” the Election was marred with violence in some Local Governments as well as over voting in other areas. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/12/ondo-2020-jegedes-case-against-akeredolu-begins-at-tribunal-today/

China’s Chang’e-5 lunar probe successfully carried out a remote-controlled rendezvous and docking manoeuvre in lunar orbit on Sunday, according to the China National Space Administration. In the first such manoeuvre ever carried out by a Chinese spacecraft, Chang’e-5’s ascender transferred samples collected on the moon to the orbiter-returner combination in lunar orbit. Afterwards, the spacecraft separated from the ascender and is to continue orbiting the moon awaiting the right moment to return to Earth. It is expected to land mid-December somewhere in Inner Mongolia. Around two kilograms of lunar rock set to be returned to Earth were safely stowed in the return capsule. Researchers hope the samples, the first to be returned to Earth in 44 years, will provide new information about the volcanic activity of the moon. This is the first time a docking manoeuvre in orbit has been successful without an astronaut present since the US and Soviet moon landings in the 60s and 70s, when the United States and the Soviet Union collected the last samples from the moon. “The Moon is a big place with differences in terrain. Returning samples from different areas helps us to understand the formation and structure of the Moon,” Australian space expert Morris Jones told dpa. “This mission also helps China in its long-term goal of landing astronauts on the Moon,” Jones added. Chang’e 5, named after the Chinese goddess of the moon, was launched in late November from the space port in Wenchang on the southern Chinese island of Hainan. The space module landed on the moon on Tuesday and started to scoop up rock samples on Wednesday, leaving the moon the following day. The moon mission is another important step in China’s ambitious space programme that also includes building its own space station by 2022 and sending an exploration mission to Jupiter by 2029. https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/12/china-completes-first-rendezvous-and-docking-in-lunar-orbit/

A self-acclaimed prophet, Kolawole Adisa, of House 50, Anike Ibikunle Street, Mosan area of Lagos state, has reported his tenant to Area ‘P’ Police command, Gate Bus Stop, for allegedly praying at nights on a regular basis. The landlord who claims to be presiding over one of the parishes of Cherubim and Seraphim (C&S) Church at Ikola area of the state, said his tenant disturbs him anytime the latter prays at night, adding that “his prayer is against the prescription of my doctor”. Reacting, the tenant who simply identified himself as Engr Kenny John refuted the claims made by the landlord as “false and concocted report” while explaining his side of the story. According to him, “I rented this apartment in 2018 and I categorically told him (landlord) of my faith, particularly my denomination as a member of Mountain of Fire where prayer is our most powerful weapon to conquer life fiercest battles. “Also, I stated my terms and conditions before moving to the apartment of which I told him I wouldn’t want to be staying with my landlord under the same roof to avoid some of these unforeseen circumstances,” he said. He continued: “The trouble started immediately he (landlord) moved into this apartment and requested I connected him with my electricity bill and water bill respectively of which I declined. “Since then, I noticed his mood changed towards me and I never took him serious because I had many important things I paid attention to. “So, I believed this is the more reason he gave me notice to quit from his house and I agreed to leave next year as stated in the letter. “He should just let’s go settle this in court instead of coming up with this flimsy excuse.” https://www.vanguardngr.com/2020/12/prophet-drags-tenant-to-police-station-for-regularly-praying-at-nights/

Nobody had expected that Covid-19 would wreak so much havoc. All the sectors, all areas of human endeavour, suffered unquantifiable loss, including education. Though many are putting the losses after them and have moved on with life, a body like the National Examination Board (NECO) is still confused on what to do. Despite the ravaging effect of Covid-19 pandemic, the WAEC was able to successfully conduct the 2020 SSCE, but NECO unfortunately couldn’t. Some outstanding papers like Chemistry Practical, Economics, Technical Drawing and Commerce are still pending and it is worrisome that the NECO has kept mute putting these innocent students who had enrolled for the exams in a kind of suspense. Right now, hopes of millions of NECO 2020 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination ( SSCE) candidates are hanging, especially those who want to pursue courses in engineering, environmental sciences and management sciences, to mention a few. If the WAEC could conduct its examinations successfully, it is an indictment on the part of the present NECO management not to do the same. Could this be the expectations of the founding fathers and Nigerian citizens, 20 years ago? When similar things happened in both Northeast and Northwest during the 2018 NECO SSCE, NECO was able to remedy this by conducting make-up exams for the students who missed the exams when they were shifted. The present NECO management must wake up from its slumber. The body should not allow the NECO to go into extinction because if this is not remedied, no parents will want their children to write the NECO exams again. With the current NECO management attitude, the world education body could withdraw recognition of the NECO Certificate. In fact, some schools are already losing interest in the body. Now that the 2020 NECO SSCE marking is about to commence on Monday, what is the fate of these innocent children? What now is the effect of JAMB delaying 2020/ 2021 admissions because of NECO results? The information being gathered is that these students will sit for the November/ December exams coming up in February/ March 2021. What is the fate of the students as well as the parents? It is high time the Federal Ministry of Education, Parents Teachers Association (PTA) and so on wade into it. https://thenationonlineng.net/dont-kill-vision-of-founding-fathers-of-neco/
