From personal experience, Like the OP noted they tend to believe they deserve success "in business " because they are successful in school.

They end up falling woefully in business.

Reason is, to be successful in school you need to have a retentive memory backed by study.

In business you don't need retentive memory... You need to be able to control and redirect resources. Resources like Money, humans, material, time, machine, technology etc to produce and sell solution to a particular problem.

The bigger the problem, the high demand of the solution, the effectiveness of your delivery the richer and successful that business person would be.

Well, the most educated in any endeavour always outperform the less educated. Sustainable success remains the standard measure of intelligence in any cause of life.

The reason why self and continuous educated (people in this class comprises of both formally and informally educated) normally achieve greater successes than those who're only well-schooled is because the latter is conceit personified - they know everything but understand nothing.

The major key to success in business or indeed any other endeavour in life is FOCUS. The reason a businessman would be successful is because he focuses on one thing only, business. The business plan to secure fund/loan is entirely different from the business plan to guide the Business (for same entrepreneur, Same idea)

The exact source of funding (equity, debt or free) also is a factor that can change the plan structure.

The level you tend to project the business can also change the plan by 180° because a startup can comfortably be fix into an idea stage or a growing stage... An idea stage business plan is entirely different from a growing Business plan.

I had advice you to talk to an expert or if you insist on DIY, you could consider a 2nd degree in Business Administration in UK.

Hard copy book may not be what you need.
