Well as to the topic like the Yorubas say "Orisa jen pe meji obinrin kosi, " I have not yet met the woman who will agree at first instance to polygaous situation whether she is muslim or not but maybe men should not promise women monogamy just in case the spirit is willing and the flesh is weak, lol. |
@ deols i couldnt have said it better myself Monogamy is the rule polygamy is the exception just like God loves the union btw a man and a woman but still permits divorce Islam does not make it compulsory for a man to marry up to 4 wives and even the condition attached to polygamy in Islam is quite strict if you ask me,the condition is marry more than one if you can be just among all of them which itself makes it difficult for any muslim to consider polygamy but the problem is much more human than religious even if God says marry only one, people will still break the law because as humans we have the freewill to. Afterall in Christianity where people say till death do us part the men still end up being polygamous and still attend church. Monogamy is the rule polygamy is the exception, -@deols end of story |
Ok this is an appeal to everyone it is obvious that we are no longer thinking straight. Which is greener btw SW and SE? For God sake even in geography the flora and fauna, climate and geophysical structure of both regions differ. Some of the pictures shown are of natural rain forests so how does that become an accomplishment of either of the two people whether Yoruba or Ibo. For all the claims of treeplanting we all know that these plants will not grow over night it will take btw 15-35 years for a tree to fully mature and that is even if someone does not come later on to cut it down again. Very soon someone will comeup with which is better the green in southern Nigeria or the sands in Northern Nigeria. I mean everyday i come on here thinking we cannot go any lower than this but it just seems we keep breaking the record. in a world where even organizations are fighting racism we are here displaying our own form of racism everyday. I am from Ibadan and as regards the statements made here it would be good if we can all do some scholarly work , though it is in Yoruba, but for me it was an interesting read pick up "Iwe itan Ilu Ibadan ati awon agbegbe re" by Oba Akinyele it is a good look at how the city evolved.n Instead of us coming here to bash one another why dont we all enlighten ourselves about our individual nations(ethnicities). Almost everytime our comparisons are usually dishonest and that is what the pictures posted by Anonymous shows. it is the same SW cities the OP claimed was not green that had those green places. And we blame the media for distorting stories we are already doing it ourselves. I just have this to say for all of us and its a Yoruba proverb "Aifini pe eni Aipe eniyan ni eniyan ni mu ara oko san bante wo ilu" i.e. it is only when you dont have any sort of regard for a people and there way of life will make you think it is ok to just walk into the city with your underpants on and its only the ignoramus that behaves that way. It does not matter whether you are Yoruba or Ibo or Hausa it is when you totally disregard other people as humans and you behave this way makes you more like a member of the lower species. |
@omonuan that was an interesting story and am glad you shared it with us. I keep telling warmongers if war breaks out tommorrow, to think of every atrocity committed in war it will happen it doesnt matter whether you are Igbo hausa or Yoruba like it was said in the documentary "…white or black, we are all capable of acts of intelligence, cowardice, courage and stupidity." You can imagine people who were neighbors in your story turning on each other. No one is safe in war, if you are Ibo and you think Hausa and Yorubas are your enemies think again, same goes for Hausa and Yorubas. It is during war that your neighbor who might probably be from your tribe will remember that he had an agelong vendetta against you. This has happened in every war in history remember who gave away Anne Franks family secret hideout? War turns even the ordinary man into monsters. The most moving part to this story for me was when the journalist met Shuyimans family and he gave them Isaacs photo. I cried with them. but then i asked myself why were they crying? Probably because they felt they were not forgotten, someone somewhere still remembered the good their parents did and that was some hope for them. Or maybe they felt the stories they heard from their parents come to life in their lifetime. I cried when i saw how they reacted when they got Isaacs' photo. They truly felt something, the bond that binds all humans together whether black white yellow green or blue we all share a common heritage being members of the same human race and our hopes successes and sufferings are often intertwined whether we know it or not. |
I am a Muslim and just like the last poster said i hope no muslim comes and comments on this thread again because whether you like it or not there is a lot of hatred going around(religious ethnic and even nationality) and there is little that can be done about it as most people have made up their minds to categorize muslims as terrorists. But i will leave all of us especially the Nigerians with two things: 1. When Germany was invaded during the final days of World WarII the people in Hamburg, who never supported the Nazi party during its rise to power and never supported Hitler during his reign were still called Nazis by the invading Army and were punished and insults were shouted at the people in the region despite the fact that they never supported the Nazis, now in anybodys opinion was taht the right thing to do? And the excuse of if i dont talk to my BH " brothers" up North and then i should continue to live with the insults, Please i ask you how do i talk to them? What talk havent they heard before? Does anyone even realise that a lot of Imams in Borno especially were killed by the so called BH just because they spoke against them and outlawed them from some mosques. 2. I leave you with Martin Niemöller's quote When the Nazis came for the communists, I remained silent; I was not a communist. When they locked up the social democrats, I remained silent; I was not a social democrat. When they came for the trade unionists, I did not speak out; I was not a trade unionist. When they came for the Jews, I remained silent; I wasn't a Jew. When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out. Yes its the Muslims today, who knows who it will be tommorrow. @Ajileko Anybody remember back then the "owo Udoji" I remember Dad coming home and braging of additional pay check he recieved. I think it is like a bonus pay for all govetnment workwers. Mom was really happy though. "Owo Udoji" your father was refering to is the pay rise recommended by the Udoji commission in the 70s i think as part of the civil service reform process. I dont have all the facts in my head but my father told me about it too. I think there was another civil service reform commission headed by Ojetunji Aboyade too am not sure if its the same with the Udoji process. |
Re: Nigeria In The 60s/70s. Sights And Sounds « #168 on: Today at 06:49:28 PM » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote from: Ileke-IdI on Today at 06:44:05 PM Have you started again? Behave yourself. No I have not started. I was asking a question. You behave yourself. @Ileke-Idi and EzeUche 3 gbosas for both of you lovely pics if you have any recent ones dating to the 1980s pls lets see them. This is the kind of threads we should have because i think it will definitely make we, the modern naijans think and ask ourselves where are we coming from and where we are going. As regards EzeUches question dont lets get worked up on that he asked a good question and their are a lot of writings as regards the build of politics that led to the first which assert the happenings in the "Wild Wild West" of then as one of the causes of creating a heated polity now this may beopened to arguement but there are facts and stories of what happened in the West then. Like the Yorubas would say "Aroba ni baba itan" politics even then was dirty and violent. The only answer i can give to those asking what went wrong is this- we the people went wrong not just the leaders and it is still happening and very visible even on Nairaland, almost every thread degenerates to a tribal bashing thread. All things said i am happy and impressed with both of you guys you have brought up beautiful pics to make even the unborn Nigerian child reminisce lets leave ethnicity aside and appreciate ourselves as Nigerians. Because when you look at it every Nigerian ethnicity has a hand in all the problems we seem to have as a country dividing Nigeria will only make the problem localized not go away. Big ups to you guys Naija o ni baje oo |
and we wonder why we are not any better in this country, even after the true story as said by the wife and driver were put up there, people on the thread are still speculating and writing all sort of humiliating stuff about the man and his family. In all honesty looking at the responses so far shows that as a people we are not any better than all the ills that plague our society, Na wa o Na real wa May God Help us. |
Though I posed these questions to a particular poster, anyone who likes is free to answer. In a nutshell, I think branding the current banking system popular in Nigeria and the rest of the world as "Judeo-Christian" is inaccurate. Quote from: ekt_bear on Yesterday at 09:03:53 PM Two questions: 1) What is Judeo-Christian banking 2) Where is it practiced? In particular, is it practiced in Nigeria, Japan, China, and India? I read the posters initial post and am not so sure if he/she meant to say the present banking had judeo-christian roots. What I would say is just that a lot of what is conventional nowadays, do or did have some form of support from the Judeo/Christian authorities as at the term of their advent. for example some sources do associate the modern form of banking to the UK and as at the beginning the UK was a monarchy with strong ties to the church and of course the church and monarchy had to be in agreement on such matters for it to be accepted(those were the days before the cry for seperation of church and state). Another example is the present calendaring system which of course was perfected by the church more. Though the conventional banking system may not follow christian principles but am sure i will not be too wrong to say it definitely was encouraged by the Church(by that i mean the Church authority) as a financial system. Another thought is that there is a lot of Jewish influence in the present financial system in the world over as there are usually references of Jews being financial brokers and developing many of the global financial institutions we have in the world, that wont still mean they follow Jewish rules for financial transactions but their influence in the present financial system cannot be overlooked. |
That position is further exacerbated by SLS pushing Islamic Banking beyond the confines of what is expected of a Central Bank Governor. If a man's beliefs, religious or otherwise, do not stand in the way of his performing his duties, then there shouldn't be a problem. But what if a man tries to make atonement for past actions and uses his office? For instance, what if SLS is pushing this Islamic Banking issue because he is trying to make up for working in Riba taking institutions? Is that idea too far-fetched considering Sanusi's antecedents? Perhaps, this is conjecture but there is a reason why SLS is pushing Islamic Banking despite its failings elsewhere and its likely vituperations in Nigeria. If we ignore religion, what else can we point to as being responsible for his actions (Islamic Banking)? I am merely giving an opinion on this particular point. @Katsumoto i think you are now trying to delve into SLS mind and find the motive for trying to push Islamic banking, that will be something only he can answer. But the most important is whatever is reason might be lets not forget that Non-Interest banking in particular Islamic banking had been in the works before SLS ever bacame CBN gov. JAIZ bank did get a license during Soludos time but their efforts got a setback due to the increase in bank recapitalisation. Besides whether he is using at a form of repentance or not i dont see all banks starting an islamic banking arm or new banks just springing up under the guise of islamic banking. It is obvious to everybody that it is a form of banking, the blame for all the noise on this issue lies with both SLS and we the public imagine the Methodist Prelate saying just because of the word Islamic it is wrong thats like saying just because their is a cross on the Red Cross then it infringes on a muslims right. Now i blame SLS for some his utterances which are ill timed more often than not and dont address the publics yearning for more info hence making him guilty of putting the public at the mercy of CAN and media of course both this sources will definitely not root for anything associated with Islam not because they hate Islam but due to sentimental reasons. I think we should put more focus on his works as CBN gov than just trying to pin a conspiracy on trying to Islamize Nigeria on him. i dont see any possibility of just turning every nook and cranny of Nigeria over to any religion in particular happening. |
3. Like SLS, you are an ardent follower of Islam. Why do you believe that an ardent Muslim should be involved in the collection of Riba, of which SLS is still guilty of at this point in time? If the Holy Book is clear on Riba (the words of Holy Prophet Mohammed are VERY CLEAR on this), why should SLS or any other ardent Muslim ignore this clear message? Would you similarly excuse a Muslim selling non-Halal meat to Muslims and non-Muslims alike or would you excuse a Muslim working in an alcohol brewery? I know you tried to answer to answer this question the last time but your answer was unsatisfactory. I urge you to think this through before answering. The words of God are not to be changed by men seeking to gain an advantage in the world. What exactly is the point you going about with the question above. Katsumoto i appreciate your efforts in trying to be objective as far as possible but your question above sounds to me like you just want to discredit SLS or just want to discredit him as a Muslim. I am no lover of SLS i am opposed or do have some opposing views as regards his work. As regards your question yes it is true a muslim shoudnt be involved in taking or issuing Riba and there is no doubt about that among even muslims and scholars of Islam and am sure even SLS does not doubt that, what scholars/muslims then argue is seeing the kind of society we live in with no workplace that support Islamic ethics and i have to find a job to provide for myself and my family can i take a job with an Interest based conventional institution, it is in this opinions differ some would tell you to take the job but remember to pursue every other opportunity that gets you out of the job others will tell you no dont take it. Now am sure SLS does not portay himself as a perfect muslim and i sure do know to the best of my knowledge he hasnt made such statements but him working with an interest bearing institution is something btw him and his Lord and not for us to judge him by depending on the circumstances. An arguement in the same vein is the fact Muslims dont consume pork but then if you find yourself as a muslim with only pork meat as the only means of survival of course go ahead and eat it so you dont die but if there are alternatives then go ahead and take the alternatives. And if you have to be honest this is the same attitude and behavior with all religions not just Islam; The religion says one thing and the faithfuls do the other. It just depends in what light we want to view the circumstances of the faithfuls actions. So i believe your question would apply even to Soludo himself or even to any Nigeria who claims one religion or the other why do we as human beings ignore the messages of our so called professed faiths. Am sorry i wont be able to comment on your other questions as i am no economist or cant really judge SLS expertise on most financial issues but as regards Islamic banking all i can say is the following 1. Yes it is a form of Non-Interest banking but it is also more than that it has its rules based on the tenets of a religion doesnt mean non-muslims cannot make use of it if they want and its evolution and development as to be in conformity with the rules of the religion. That is why its more or less a subset of Non-interest banking as its focus is doing financial transactions based on rules specified in Islam. In academic circles it is recognised as a form of finance/banking system. 2. I am personally of the opinion that SLS as not handled the publicity that goes with the whole issue well. His responses to the questions raised by the public have not been satisfactory enough even to me. 3. It seems like we the public are also guilty of creating sentiments on the issue. Turning it into an issue of Muslims vs Christians, North vs South just does not help us all. The media have also not helped with the way some statements are put into writing and making it sound like its a ploy to turn the whole country over to Islam or something i dont really see how thats going to happen. |
I almost cried reading this thread. One important lesson for me is as Nigerians we have a story to tell. One thing though is that we seem to have been plagued by the same problems all along our history as a country bad leaders, corruption, no sense of discipline as a people and most dangerous MISTRUST between different people who make up the entity called NIGERIA. Thank you for starting this thread it makes me able to see our country in perspective. Naija o ni baje o |

This should be a lesson to us all (posters) on Nairaland we need to be careful before opining on discussions here a lot of people had already started calling him Ajimobi a thief until someone came up with a retraction from the same Tribune that the case had been withdrawn from court even reading from the initial post in the beginning it seems Ajimobi claimed that he cannot find the said money mistakenly debited in his account statement so how would he be paying something they cannot even show proof of? Funny enough all those who posted that he is a thief and what not have not come back to even show remorse or retract their statements. Now that shows the way Nigeria is going we all seem to be loosing our character not just because we are thieves and corrupt but also because the so called good ones among us who label the thieves would probably make mistakes picking right from wrong. Please lets be careful because one of the things you cant take back in life is what comes from your mouth. naija o ni baje ooo |
@satani22 i find your point about land reclamation interesting and i think it is an important view when looking at the causes of flooding in Lagos. When discussing with some of my friends i have always talked about my concerns for the Island\Lekki Ajah axis when it comes to land reclamation and the topography of the area my opinion is that all that area is a disaster waiting to happen in the nearest future. All that water that land was reclaimed from will rise to take its place one day, it may be now tommorrow or in the future. who knows? we have all talked about waste in drainage. poor drainage design but lets not overlook the land from sea issue as well it plays a role in this seasonal floodings. what do you guys think? Please!!! lets all not forget that Lagos is a part of Nigeria and as Nigerians we should all be proud of the city it used to be the capital at a time. this should be a place where we can voice our opinions without having to demean ourselves. |
Guys(Eko Ile, alj harem) please lets make this discussion as interesting and intellctual as possible lets stop all this sentimental insults we are hurling at ourselves. Whether the government is doing anything or not we are all agreed that Lagos is prone to flooding not just because of drainage but because of the states topography and environment. Like it was mentioned it is not an easy feat even in engineering terms to solve the problem, because of the nature of the terrain coupled with the heavy rainfall, Lagos will likely still witness flooding even with all the engineering designs in place. Instead of bashing or praising the government lets not forget that development is a continuous process and does not have a stopping point. because as you are solving one problem another problem rears its ugly head. "there is chaos in order and order in chaos" @gare3th ekt_bear and satani22 thank you for your discussions so far. @ evryone Eko o ni ba je, o ba je ti |
I like the discussions so far on the forum(very informative) at least it has been devoid of serious insults so far and i hope it stays that way. i would just like to put in my own 2kobo. Agreed Yorubaland as a word was an afterthought of the british colonialisation we got but we mustnt forget that Yorubaland as an idea is not. I personally would say i am a member of the Yoruba race because i speak Yoruba and i come from Ibadan, the culture and way of life of most Yoruba towns are quite similar in so many ways. i would say Yorubaland or race exists whether geographically or as an idea looking at it from the Nigerian context and of course unless we want to start another Kiriji or Ekiti parapo war amongst ourselves it would be sensible if we all recognise that though Ekiti might speak its own version of Yoruba and the Ijeshas have their own we are all still a part of the Yoruba race. That all the Obas we have now are of little or no relevance i will have to put the blame on the colonial masters and the indigenous leaders that came after them. That said i quite agree that most titles given especially by the Alaafin in precolonial days had significance throughout Yorubaland(at least the Aare Ona Kakanfo was recognised as the Oyo empires Generallismo in most Yoruba towns them) might not be of relevance nowadays due to each Yoruba entity identifying with their own monarchs and not Alaafin. @ Katsumoto Can you clarify what you mean by Ooni is the spiritual head of the Yorubas. |
i think Reuben Abati did good justice on this when he said Nigerians are not looking for MInisters or Governors who need one year to stabilize, he should get down t business immediately not waiting one year to stabilize. Well we can all check the link below for the article http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49540:abati-the-speech-jonathan-shouldnt-have-made&catid=38:columnists&Itemid=615 |
Chei and we wonder why Naija is going down see as fight and insult erupt over common say my IGBO brother they tell me about spelling that i didnt know. ANd when House of rep or senate member start to dey fight on top TV we go dey abuse dem no be topics like this dey start d fight. I can imagine pple on this thread in the house of assembly and someone brings up this topic, just imagine, what the house wud look like on that day. we are our own problem. |
I think we need to be very careful with this CBN thing i watched an interview with Sanusi sometimes ago and i agree that the media do blow issues out of context especially where a speaker says one thing and newspapers interprete it as another. For instance when Vanguard came out with their article in March who was the CBN governor then? Can we get references to statements made by Sanusi himself in his own words not someone trying to explain what Sanusi said. A lot has been said about how wrong the move by Sanusi was but can we just look out the beginning of the present global economic crisis, Lehman Brothers crashed but the Bush administartn knew about Lehman bros weaknesses and failed to help. Thats one of the reasons the Obama admin decided to inject govt funds into some failing institutions because of the devastating effects they would have on the economy. Govt intervention in the private sector is necessary looking at the recent move by the US govt to get Swiss banks to reveal US citizens who are evading tax. Also that PHB was declared unhealthy and Unity bank was told to recapitalise doesnt say Unity bank was better, many of these CEOs had to shoulder the responsibility for the problems in their respective institutions. Besides its quite possible that a lot of these institutions just use publicity stunts to make them look good when in fact there house is in disarray. Let me just say we need to look at this issue from all perspectives not just saying its a Northern agenda or they are trying to sell off banks to outsiders without any concrete proof to show. Sanusi himself declared in an interview that he went to London to ease the fears of foreign entities doing business or with existing interests in Nigerian banks that there investments were safe. Please lets be more objective in our analysis of the issue am not saying Sanusi is right in all ramifications but am saying a lot of the wrong he is accused of really has no basis. |

" The problem with religion is not about the faith, The problem is more with the faithfuls." @machu_1 : i think i agree with u. ![]() |
men u guys are true life, i mean what else can i call it, muslim guys dating xtian girls is not new and it will neva stop i guess u shud do a survey on the vice versa (xtian guys muslim girls) too. to me i guess people are more apt to obey their emotions than just following religion says this or that, remember "love" is also a determining factor, i wudnt agree that a high % of muslim guys and xtian girls that date get married and besides its not about the religion its about what the guy in question wants. i ave seen "hip" muslim guys who ended up marrying hijab sistas, it all depends on the emotions of the man and what he wants. @davidylan: u seem to ave an issue with the mere mention of the word Islam or muslims, u catch fire and start hurling invectives against anything that has to do with Islam, muslims and even God, how manytimes do u ave to be told that the word Allah means God in arabic; If u actually ave issues with muslims or the religion maybe u can air them, cos i dont understand ur problem with Islam even on posts that ave nothing to do with Islam u use it as the butt of ur jokes. Most times all you do makes u sound like someone from the "Inquisition Era". ![]() |
![]() Guys i really think we should take this redenominaion of a thing with care. is the economy ready for such a thing or we just want to do "follow follow". the govt cant really control prices since our economy is market driven, i.e. follows the rules of demand and supply, cost e.t.c. Its only in a productive economy that redenomination will really work. some conditions have to be met before implementing it or else, the naira will still bow to the forces of inflation. Soludo may be good but lets not forget he is still human and besides the idea had being brought up during obj's regime why wasnt it announced then. my advice lets all look at the issue very wellbefore attacking the presidents decision. |
