Health › 3.1m Nigerians Smoke,says New Survey by Krasid(op): 1:56pm On Jul 12, 2013
By Judd-Leonard Okafor
An estimated 3.1 million Nigerian adult smoke tobacco, though 82% know its causes "serious illness",says the first-ever survey tobacco prevalence.

The Global Adult Tobacco Survey,GATS,showed even more Nigerians are exposed to second-hand smoke.

Some 2.7 million adults are exposed to tobacco smoke at workplaces,5.2 million are exposed to smoke at home and 6.4 million are exposed to smoke when visiting restaurants.GATS sampled nerly 9,000 adults over age 15 in some 11,000 households across the country last year, and its rease,Thursday,in Abuja prompted President Goodluck Jonathan to call for more "effecient enforcement of the ban of smoking in public place."
Tobacco is "the only legal consumer product that kills one-third to half of those who use it as intended by its manufacturers, with its victim dying an average of 15 years prematurely,"the President said in comments delivered by health minister,Onyebuchi Chukwu.

Stand up for your right

The President urged non-smokers to "stand up for their right to smoke-free environment",insisting part time smokers were exposed to as much risk as active smokers.

He also called for effective health warnings,"especially to those that include pictures" to motivate smokers to quit tobacco.

The survey indicates Nigeria each month spend an average of N1200 about one-sixth the monthly minimum wage in cigarettes.

Around six million yearly deaths are attributed to tobacco, and the deaths could rise to eight million by 2030 if current world trends continue, said the World Health Organisation.

WHO'S country representative in Nigeria,Dr Rui Gama Vaz,said GATS,the first-ever on the continent, was "unprecedented oppurtunity" for controlling tobacco in Africa.

Public health experts have accused tobacco manufacturers for putting profit before lives and seeking newer markets.

Okey Nwayanwu of the Centre of Disease Control spoke of evidence that "tobacco companies are investing heavily in getting younger people hooked on their products".

"As developed countries continue to push against tobacco, the industry continues to push for new grounds to dump their product,"he said

Olabode Oluwafemi of Environment Rights Action spoke of "evidence that tobacco companies were targetting Nigeria on account of its impressionable youths and oil money.Analyst say the companies ride on promotion, sponsorship and advertising to create market the perception that cigarettes are cool.
The GAT study found that at least five in every 10 Nigerian adult"did not believe smoking cause stroke"

Sports › Taribo Begs Keshi To Recall Yobo by Krasid(op): 2:46am On Jul 11, 2013
A former Super Eagles defender has pleaded with Stephen Keshi to recall team captain Joseph Yobo as Nigeria prepare for their last group f world cup qualifying match against the Flames of Malawi.

Yobo who was a key player for Fenerbahce in last season's campaign in Turkey last played for Nigeria at the 2013 African Cup of Nations in South Africa where he featured as a substitute in most of the games. He has since been left out of the team as Nigeria played all their matches in the qualifying rounds for Brazil 2014.

The former Everton defender recently lashed out at Keshi for leaving him out of the team while the coach has insisted that Yobo remains the team captain. But Taribo is not convinced that Keshi has Yobo in his plans,a situation he said cost Nigeria an impressive outing at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil. The former Inter Milan and AC Milan defender said the Super Eagles defence lacked quality at the Brazil event and could be worse at future games, insisting that the team missed Yobo at the competition.

"None of those defenders has the experience of Yobo.I don't understand why Keshi left him out and included players that are yet to experience top football,"Taribo said.

"If there is any misunderstanding between player and coach, this is the best time to bury their differences in the interest of Nigerian Football.Keshi cannot expect to leave one of the best players out of the team and expect the rest to perform miracles on the pitch. What Yobo played for his club in the Europa league showed that he is still one of the best defenders in Europe. How can Keshi be the only one not seeing this?"

"Nigeria's defence was embarassing against Spain and Uruguay at the Confederations Cup.It was clear there was no co-ordination among the players. It wasn't that they couldn't match up with both teams, they just had no way of stopping them each time they broke through midfield"

Taribo said the Technical committee of the Nigeria Football Federation should take part of the blame for Keshi's failure in Brazil.

"The committee should be able to make Keshi see reason in selecting the right players. The selection should not be about ego or personal ambition,it is about national assignment. The leadership of the technical comittee has yet to convince Nigeria that it knows anything about football,"he said.

He urged that the September 6 match against Malawi should not be used as another experiment with inexperienced players, warning that the Eagles weakest points are already widely known by would-be opponents.

Do you agree with Taribo west?
