Politics / Kanu: IPOB Declares Tuesday Sit-at-home In South-east by Kuginzi: 2:20pm On Sep 10, 2022
By Ikenna Obianeri

The Indigenous People of Biafra has declared Tuesday, September 13, as sit-at-home in the South-East.

The pro-Biafran group stated that the directive was in solidarity with its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who will be appearing in court on that day.

They insisted that there shall be a total lockdown of the whole five states in the South-East for two reasons: Kanu’s court appearance and the visit of the President, Major General Muhammad Buhari to Owerri, Imo State.

In a statement on Saturday, the group’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said IPOB is simply implementing an existing order to lock down Biafraland any day its leader will appear in court at Abuja.

The statement read in part, “The global family and movement of the IPOB wishes to announce to the general public, especially Biafrans that Tuesday September 13, has been declared a day of civil action in the form of Sit-At-Home in Biafraland.

“The Tuesday’s civil action is very important for two reasons: First, our leader’s Appeal court hearing that was supposed to be on October 11 has been brought forward to September 13, 2022.

“As usual, we call on Biafrans and lovers of freedom to demonstrate our solidarity with our leader who is bearing our yoke in detention for over a year now.

“IPOB never issued a new directive to Biafrans, but is simply implementing an existing order to lock down Biafraland any day the our leader will appear in court at Abuja.

“It was based on such agreement with our leader that informed the suspension of the initial Mondays sit-at-home declared by IPOB leadership in August of 2021.

“It is imperative that our people understand this and go about their daily work and businesses on Monday and get prepared for Tuesday, September 13, 2022 because Biafraland will be locked down completely.

“Secondly, it has come to our knowledge that the Imo State Government has decided to invite President Muhammadu Buhari to Oweeri the Imo state capital Tuesday the 13th of September 2022 the very same day the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will be appearing in Court.

“There shall be a total lock down of the whole of Biafraland on Tuesday the 13th of September 2022. The Imposter Buhari cannot be coming to Imo State while he continues to detain our leader Mazi Nnamdi in the DSS custody.

“Kanu must be released unconditionally because he committed no crime known to law. We must warn women groups, the clergy men and women, traditional rulers, president-generals and others who may be contemplating going to Owerri on Tuesday to welcome Buhari.

“If you are in support of Buhari detaining our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, then go to Owerri on Tuesday the 13th day of September and welcome the President.

“We, therefore, expect all markets, schools, banks, businesses and companies including police stations in Biafra Land to be under lock and key on Tuesday, September 13, 2022 in solidarity with our Leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“IPOB members are peaceful. We don’t enforce sit-at-home. Nevertheless, we wouldn’t tolerate people flouting IPOB leadership directives.

“Therefore, everyone in Biafran territory must adhere to this civil action in the form of sit-at home on Tuesday. Biafrans are not known to be cowards because we stand without fear before our enemies.”

Politics / EU Commits €39 Million To Electoral Process, Democracy In Nigeria by Kuginzi: 8:11am On Sep 10, 2022
Michael Olugbode in Abuja

The European Union is committing €39 million towards Nigeria’s electoral process and democracy.

The programme tagged ‘EU Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria (EU-SDGN) Phase II’, is funded under the EU’s Neighbourhood Development and International Cooperation Instrument, over a five-year period. This is a re-affirmation of EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s electoral process and would be launched on Monday September 12.

According to a statement yesterday by the EU, the programme is aimed at promoting transparent, inclusive and credible elections in Nigeria. The statement added that the overall objective of the EU-SDGN is to foster a functioning pluralistic, inclusive, participatory and representative democracy in Nigeria, insisting that inclusive, participatory and transparent elections were prerequisites for a strong democracy.

The statement quoted the Ambassador of the EU to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ms. Samuela Isopi, to have said that: “Ahead of the 2023 general election, Nigeria is at a pivotal moment that allows the country to take important steps to consolidate democracy and strengthen the electoral process. The European Union continues to partner with Nigeria in the on-going reform process with a view to strengthening the capacity to conduct well-managed elections and with ample participation of all Nigerians. For this to happen, all must contribute, from the key institutions to the political parties and candidates, from media to civil society.”

According to the statement, the project will be anchored on the priorities identified by the Nigerian government. It also builds on the lessons learned from the implementation of phase I of the programme 2017-2022 and the recommendations of the EU Election Observation Mission made after the 2019 general election as well as those of the EU Election Follow-up Mission to Nigeria.

The project, according to the statement, will more specifically focus on six thematic areas of support including improving the quality of electoral administration in Nigeria; strengthening capacities for legislative and judicial reform in compliance with democratic principles and standards; enhancing pluralism, internal democracy and equality of opportunity in the political parties and the political party system.

Others are empowering media, including new media to promote fair and ethical coverage of the electoral process and combat hate speech and disinformation; enhancing participation of women, youth and other marginalized groups in the political process; and empowering civil society organisations and relevant agencies to demand greater transparency and accountability in the electoral and decision making process, and promote greater citizens’ participation.

Politics / Pipeline Surveillance Contract Stirs Rift As Dokubo-Asari Clashes With Tompolo by Kuginzi: 7:44am On Sep 10, 2022
By Emma Amaize

Niger-Delta militant leader, Alhaji Mujahid Dokubo -Asari has strangely falling – out with the leader of defunct Movement for Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo, saying he (Tompolo) had never been involved in Ijaw nor Niger- Delta struggle.

Stakeholders suspect that Dokubo-Asari was angry with Tompolo over the pipeline surveillance contract the Federal Government awarded him, which extended to parts of Rivers state.

In a trending video, Dokubo-Asari, said: “I cannot even compare myself to Tompolo, it is unimaginable that I will condescend to the level of Tompolo. Who is Tompolo, what is his antecedents, what is his name?

“Who is he, do not allow me open a can of worms, who is Tompolo, which Ijaw struggle is he fighting? He is fighting Itsekiri people calling it Ijaw struggle and Niger Delta struggle. Is he even involved in Ijaw struggle?

“Fighting war with Itsekiri, do not allow me to talk, he has never been involved in Ijaw struggle. Never. Gbaramatu versus Itsekiri – that is the war he is fighting. He is not even defending other Ijaw people who are fighting, Ogbe-Ijoh has been fighting with Aladja has Tompolo gone there before,” he said.

Some weeks ago, Tompolo, reportedly reached out to Dokubo-Asari and another former ex-militant leader, Ateke Tom, now a king, in Rivers state, but it appears Dokubo-Asari and Tompolo have not sorted out the bone of contention.

Politics / Kwankwaso Deplores Mass Suffering, Says Nigerians Now Like Orphans by Kuginzi: 9:34pm On Sep 07, 2022
By Jim Ochetenwu

Presidential candidate of New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, has deplored what he called mass suffering across the country.

Kwankwaso said in Yola on Wednesday that Nigerians have become helpless orphans, lacking even some of the basic needs of life, including household needs and security of life and property.

He attributed this to poor governance, which he said must change.

Kwankwaso, who was in the Adamawa State capital where he commissioned the state secretariat of the NNPP, said the country urgently needs an alternative political platform and leader to bail it out of ineffective leadership.

“Today, Nigerians are like orphans. Everyone is forced to be on his own. NNPP is the alternative platform to change the narrative,” Kwankwaso said.

The newly-commissioned NNPP state secretariat is in Yola Town, near the Lamido Adamawa Palace, in Yola South Local Government Area.

This makes the NNPP different from most other active political parties in Adamawa State which have their secretariats in the Jimeta axis of the Yola capital city.

Daily Post reports that the NNPP is currently the third most prominent political party in Adamawa State after the big two: All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Its governorship candidate is a former deputy governor of the state, Sa’ad Tahir who was a former governorship aspirant under the PDP and later defected to APC, from where he defected earlier this year to the NNPP upon its reinvigoration at the national level by Rabiu Kwnakwaso.

Religion / That Ain’t God, That’s Worldliness’ – US Pastor Condemns Men With Long Hair by Kuginzi: 5:05pm On Sep 07, 2022
By Biodun Busari

Pastor Jewel Lee, the Presiding Pastor of The light Church of Clayton, North Carolina, the United States has been heavily criticised for preaching against men growing long hair.

According to Lee, in a TikTok video on Tuesday, he said men having long hair long enough to brush off their face or tie into a roll opposes their gender and the Bible.

"How you a man and you tying your hair up in a bun,” Lee said in the viral clip. “Men don’t walk around with buns on their head!”

Blavity News reported he went further that the Bible says having long hair is “a shame for a man,” and when the crowd reacted with a mixed response, he noted they were part of the “problem.”

“That’s the problem, we’re so easily offended,” said the pastor.

Lee continued on his discourse, waving brushing hair away from his face and tossing his hair back and forth with scorn.

In the clip, the pastor mumble “you’re a devil” as he chided the behaviour of men with long hair.

“That ain’t God, that’s worldliness. Men don’t do stuff like that,” Lee said.

Viewers’ reactions
Meanwhile, viewers reacting on social media were not pleased with the pastor’s sermon as many questioned the increasing number of Black churches.

“I feel like there are more important things to preach about,” one user said.

“Lord this your servant,” another added with a face palm emoji.

“Yep. This is what happens when people take verses of the Bible and remove the context,” one viewer noted.

Others mentioned that Jesus himself had long hair.

“So according to him, Jesus wasn’t a man? Every conceivable image of Jesus, he has ridiculously long hair,” a viewer tweeted.

“Black Jesus ain’t never wanna pull his hair up from ‘round his face tho…?” Another user wrote.

“This message is beyond ludicrous,” one viewer wrote. “It sounds like he has an identity problem with himself. Samson had long hair and was told by God not to cut and if he did he would lose his power. He has no right to call someone a devil for having long hair. Some of these preachers smh.”

Politics / Why PDP Must Respect Us – Gov Wike by Kuginzi: 3:50pm On Sep 07, 2022
By Clement Chinedu

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has explained why the Peoples Democratic Party must respect him and other governors in his camp.

Wike claimed the governors are the ones campaigning for the party with the projects they have executed in their various states and so deserve to be respected.

He made the assertion during the commissioning of the Emohua campus of the Rivers state university on Wednesday.

He said those governors referred to as “Children” in the party that are carrying out projects, could be used to campaign in their states.

According to Wike “the only states you can see commissioning or flag off of projects are those states according to them that the children are in charge.

“If a PDP state is not doing well, don’t think you will be voted for because APC is not doing well.

“That’s why the party should respect us and know that we are the ones campaigning for the party because we have what we can use to campaign.

“It’s not to abuse people on the pages of a newspaper or go on television and bring people who have some mental problems to defend something they cannot defend”.

Politics / Igbos Built Port Harcourt – Gov Uzodinma by Kuginzi: 6:43pm On Sep 03, 2022
By Clement Chinedu

The Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has declared that the Igbo people built Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.

The governor made the claims during a birthday ceremony held in honour of an Imo State-born elder statesman, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, in Owerri, the Imo State capital on the occasion of his 80th birthday.

Governor Uzodinma further claimed that some people are trying hard to rewrite history.

According to him, “Igbo people built Port Harcourt. Even if it pleases some people now to try to rewrite history.

“The Igbos built Port Harcourt.”

The governor further noted that Igbo people love Nigeria dearly, as demonstrated by the fact that they are found in every part of the country.

“Prominent Igbos like the late Doctor Nnamdi Azikiwe, the Ikemba Odumegwu Ojukwu, even General Ike Nwachukwu and a lot of other great men and women were born in the North by their parents who settled there as their home.
“Indeed, throughout the 774 local government areas of Nigeria, from Zungeru in the North to Owo in the West and from Akwanga to Ahoada, Igbos are found there in their large numbers.

“In most cases, outside the Indigenous population, the largest ethnic groups outside Igbo land are the Igbos,” he added.

Education / Only Thieves Demand Money They Didn’t Work For – Education Minister, Slams ASUU by Kuginzi: 8:48am On Sep 03, 2022
By John Akinfehinwa

The Minister of State for Education, Goodluck Nanah Opiah has slammed the Academic Staff Union University, (ASUU) over the lingering impasse between the union and the Federal Government.

The minister who spoke when he visited the Federal University Lokoja, (FUL), Kogi State on Friday said, ‘the no work no pay policy’ stands.

He said the federal government cannot pay lecturers for what they did not work for, adding that, the strike has continued to portray a bad image for the country and has succeeded in causing pain for parents and students.

He claimed the federal government has done much on infrastructural development in all higher institutions across the country, charging the Vice-Chancellor of FUL, Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi to appeal to lecturers to come back to work.

He added that the prolonged stay at home has done more harm than good to the future of Nigerian students.

His words “The federal government led by President Muhammadu Buhari has done so much, especially, in infrastructural development in our tertiary institution, because anywhere you go, you will see the presence of TETFUND, buildings, vehicles and all manners of institutional assets.

“Those who think that lack of infrastructure is one of the reasons they went on strike should think again. Mr Vice Chancellor, let me use this opportunity to appeal to you, to also appeal to our lecturers to come back to work because our children are suffering.

“Our country’s image is going lower. Our parents are not happy, and these lecturers are also parents of some of our students. Contrary to what they think, some of us also have our children in Nigerian Universities and they are also suffering.

Crime / Gunmen Who Kidnapped My Father Spoke Igbo – Imo Man Living Abroad by Kuginzi: 5:31am On Aug 28, 2022
By Godfrey George

A master’s student in the United States and an indigene of Orlu Local Government Area, Imo State, Chimee Adioha tells GODFREY GEORGE how his father was whisked away by gunmen and later released after a huge ransom was paid

It was reported that your father was kidnapped by some gunmen in Orlu, Imo State. How true is it?

I don’t like the term ‘gunmen’, but I need to start telling myself the truth. The reality is hitting now. So, yes, it could be gunmen, because they had guns, and they were all men. They kidnapped my father in our hometown, Orlu, Imo State, where I had lived most of my life as a child. He is a retired teacher.

How did this happen?

It was on July 20, 2022. The gunmen came to our house, looked for my father and found him. Actually, they said it was the second or third time they were looking for him and never found him until that day. They had said if they didn’t see him the third time, they would take my mother instead. But they saw my father, blindfolded him, then they wanted to drive him away in his Toyota, but suddenly, the car did not start, so they held him and put him into their own jeep and drove away.

My father said the drive lasted for about 30 minutes. That was his rough calculation. I don’t know how someone would be blindfolded, in a place that has had records of insecurity, driving for all that long and there were no checkpoints, no police, nothing; just free driving and getting to their destination so safely.

How did you learn of the kidnap?

It was afternoon in Nigeria, but morning in the US. I had just woken up and then went back to sleep before working on the computer. I felt a little tired. Then a cousin called me, asking about a message he had seen in our extended family’s WhatsApp group, that my father was kidnapped. I had not seen any WhatsApp messages and I was both confused and frustrated at that moment. I opened WhatsApp and then saw the messages and then it dawned on me that it was real. This was happening so close, although I was too far away from home. I mean, I had always heard about kidnapping, but I hadn’t really had it so close, and then this was happening in my hometown, a place that was supposed to be so peaceful. It’s so heartbreaking how Orlu has been in the news for insecurity since 2021. I was trembling and I had to leave my door open for days to be sure I was not the only one in my apartment. My housemate was very helpful. I had panic attacks and my anxiety disorder rose.

Why do you think your father was targeted?

That was the surprising thing to me too. My father is not wealthy. We grew up in a very simple house. My parents have lived in our hometown for many years. My father says he was tired of those lower middle class and upper middle class confused categorisation because Nigeria does not even afford you that economic and social label. “Just say you are comfortable,” he says. My father studied Educational Psychology in Italy in the 70s and worked as a teacher and a principal for many years in Anambra and Imo states before he voluntarily retired. We have a house, and a car, just like a human being should. These are not supposed to define wealth. They are essential human necessities, if you ask me. My father is a Catholic Knight of St. Mulumba, kept a lot of psychological books on his shelf, someone who talked less and spread love, had tea each morning of his life, drink decaffeinated coffee and loves rice.

When and how did the kidnappers reach out to your family to demand ransom?

They reached out on the second day. We were not too surprised because people told us they do not usually reach out on the first day. They used my father’s WhatsApp to send bundles of voice notes, asking that they also speak to my brother. They said they only wanted to be speaking to one person, and that was my brother. I listened to some of the voice notes; I couldn’t listen to everything because the man’s voice scared me. He spoke too fast, with a different Igbo dialect, with weak English, with a commanding tone, both commanding and kind. So, it was a whole voice note festival, my brother sent, they sent, my brother sent again, asking to hear my father’s voice and they sent back the next day with my father’s voice. It seemed the place had steady music. There was always local music in the background, the music you can’t really place who the singer was, but it appeared like it came from a very large speaker. When they said we should not involve the police or any sort of security network, there was music in the background; when they said the amount of money my brother was proposing was “too tiny, as tiny as an ant,” there was also music in the background. Music every time that I wondered how they slept, how my father slept with all that music, someone that always wants everywhere noise-proof to be able to sleep.

Politics / INEC Warns Against Campaigns In Churches, Mosques, Violators Risk Imprisonment by Kuginzi: 5:22am On Aug 28, 2022
Exactly one month to the commencement of campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission has warned political parties and candidates against the use of masqueraders, public facilities and religious centres for campaigns.

The commission asked political parties to align strictly with the provisions of the Electoral Act to avoid sanctions as stipulated by the Act. INEC had fixed September 28 for the commencement of campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly, while the elections would hold on February 25, 2023.

Relying on Section 92 of the Electoral Act, 2022, INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Committee on Information and Voter Education, Mr Festus Okoye, in a recent interview with our correspondent explained that the law expected political campaigns to be civil and devoid of abuse.

In previous electioneering, some political parties and their candidates were wont to engage in all kinds of theatrics, including the use of masqueraders, to entertain the crowd and add colour to their rallies. Some also covertly campaigned in public offices and worship centres, especially churches and mosques, to woo civil servants and worshippers, respectively.

But quoting from the provisions of the section, Okoye said, “Section 92 of the Electoral Act makes it mandatory that a political campaign or slogan shall not be tainted with abusive language directly or indirectly likely to injure religious, ethnic, tribal or sectional feelings.

“Therefore, abusive, intemperate, slanderous or base language or insinuations or innuendoes designed or likely to provoke violent reaction or emotions shall not be employed or used in political campaigns.

“Subsection 3 states that places designated for religious worship, police stations and public offices shall not be used for political campaigns, rallies and processions; or to promote, propagate or attack political parties, candidates or their programmes or ideologies.

“Masqueraders shall not be employed or used by any political party, aspirant or candidate during political campaigns or for any other political purpose.”

As witnessed in some previous elections where parties hired thugs to repel detractors, Okoye in reference to subsection (5) of Section 92, warned parties and candidates against training or enlisting the help or services of individuals or groups for the purpose of displaying physical force or coercion in a manner that could arouse reasonable apprehension during the campaigns.

Sunday PUNCH reports that in previous campaigns, some political parties engaged thugs to ensure orderliness as well as prevent political enemies from disrupting their rallies.

Politics / Minister Blames Street Traders, Beggars For Insecurity In Abuja by Kuginzi: 7:39am On Aug 27, 2022
By John Chukwu

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Muhammad Bello, has accused beggars, and street traders from neighbouring states of fueling the insecurity in the nation’s capital.

The minister according to a statement issued by the Director of Information and Communication in the FCT, Muhammad Sule, stated this at a meeting with the FCT security committee on Friday.

Represented at the meeting by the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramotu Tijani-Aliyu, the minister said the committee had concluded plans to launch resuscitated G-7 Security Joint Operation in September.

The committee which is headed by Bello is expected to work with community leaders to build an effective vigilante network in the rural communities.

The statement read: “The Security Agencies in the FCT have upped their game and people who have no business being here are being sent away.

“Some of them come under different guises such as begging, street trading, among others. They usually come from neighbouring states and are causing security breaches here. That is why we have decided to send them out.”

The FCT has witnessed several attacks by Boko Haram insurgents and other criminals in recent weeks.

Nearly 9,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed since Russia’s invasion began, Ukraine’s commander-in-chief said on Monday, the Interfax-Ukraine news agency reported.

Valeriy Zaluzhny told a forum that Ukraine’s children needed particular attention “because their fathers have gone to the front and are maybe among the nearly 9,000 heroes who have been killed”.

Ukrainian officials have only very rarely given any detail on military losses in nearly six months of war.

The last estimate dates back to April when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that up to 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers had been killed and 10,000 injured.

Politics / Politicians Recruiting Cultists, Ex-convicts To Cause Trouble In Rivers – Wike by Kuginzi: 9:23pm On Aug 07, 2022
By Williams Anuku

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has said the state has obtained intelligence reports that some misguided politicians have started recruiting cultists, ex-convicts and thugs in furtherance of their political aspirations for 2023.

The governor said the state government is aware that owners of hotels and entertainment centres are in the process of giving out their premises to politicians and political parties as a convenient base for the gathering of these political thugs across the State.

Governor Wike, in a state broadcast on Sunday, emphasised that the state government is not taking intelligence reports at its disposal lightly, and will therefore not allow any politician, no matter his previous or present position, the chance or opportunity to upset the prevailing peace and security in Rivers State.

“Similarly, we will not allow any political party, be it the All Progressives Congress, the Peoples Democratic Party or the Social Democratic Party to threaten the safety and security of lives and property during the campaigns with mayhem, thuggery or violence.

“Accordingly, we have already alerted and set the security agencies on the trail of these misguided politicians and leaders of political parties and stop them in their tracks with the full weight of the law.

“We also wish to warn owners of hotels and proprietors of relaxation centres to take notice and desist from releasing their facilities for politicians and party leaders to use to meet and plot against the peace, safety and security of our state.”

The governor warned that the state government will pull down hotels and other entertainment places that are linked with such criminal political activities.

“I wish to reiterate our unwavering commitment to safeguarding the sanctity of lives and property throughout the State and to reassure everyone that we shall continue to spare no effort to keep Rivers State safe and secure.

“We urge residents to be vigilant while going about with their normal activities and promptly report any suspicious gatherings or movements in your vicinity to the attention of the security agencies for necessary action.”

Governor Wike commended the people of Rivers State for the overwhelming support and solidarity they have given to his administration since May 2015 till date.

According to him, his administration truly appreciates the trust the people of the State have continued to place in his administration to advance the collective peace, security and progress of the State.

“I wish to reiterate that our commitment to the shared covenant for a new, secure and prosperous Rivers State remains strong as ever and we will neither relent nor waiver in our determination to deliver all that we set out to achieve to advance our security, progress and prosperity before the end of our administration.

“I wish to reiterate that our commitment to the shared covenant for a new, secure and prosperous Rivers State remains strong as ever and we will neither relent nor waiver in our determination to deliver all that we set out to achieve to advance our security, progress and prosperity before the end of our administration.

“We have done so much and achieved a lot in the last seven years but there is still much more to be delivered. I can assure you that, and as you are witnessing, we will continue to deliver meaningful projects until our last day in office.

“As you all know these are very turbulent times in the history of our country as the level of insecurity across all parts has never been this bad.

“Nevertheless, we thank God Almighty for the prevailing high level of peace and security in Rivers State relative to the near calamity that has befallen most other parts of the country.”

Governor Wike also applauded security agencies, for their efforts, courage and dedication to keeping Rivers State substantially safe and secure in the face of very daunting operational difficulties that they face, including the lack of adequate support systems and motivation from the Federal Government.

“The government and the security agencies have laboured hard to secure the prevailing peace and security, which we are determined to sustain for the benefit of the progress of the State and the wellbeing of our citizens.”

Crime / Policemen Laughed As We Struggled To Escape From Terrorists – Cleric by Kuginzi: 5:13am On Aug 07, 2022
A Benue-based cleric, Pastor Peter Kegh, recounts to GODFREY GEORGE how he was alledgedly attacked by terrorists along Otukpo Road in Benue State on his way back from a crusade in Abia State

You were reported to have been attacked by terrorists around Ugbokolo Otukpo Junction, Benue State. What really happened?

My name is Peter Kegh. I live in Benue State and I am an evangelist. I went for evangelism in Abia State and was on my way back to my station in Benue State on June 15, 2022, when I was accosted by some gun-wielding terrorists along the Ugbokolo-Otukpo at about 6.14 pm. There is a place called Otukpa Junction. Once you get there, if you are driving, you will notice a long descent of about two or three kilometres. One will just keep descending gradually; after descending that slope, I was supposed to climb another hill-like surface when I noticed that the vehicle ahead of me quickly made a diversion on the right into a town called Ogbokolo. I didn’t think anything was off, so I continued my trip. But as I climbed the gradual slope and levelled, I saw, in a stretch, some persons wearing black outfits across the road. When I saw them, at first, I thought they were police officers, so I didn’t really read any meaning into it. I wondered what they were doing there. I was in the car with my wife, mother-in-law and two other ladies. About 100 metres to where the first group was standing, they flagged me to stop. I was at a speed of 100km per hour, so I couldn’t slow down immediately. I almost slowed down but something in me just told me to continue moving. “Even the police shouldn’t just stop somebody like that on the highway,” I thought to myself. So, I decided to start moving.

What happened after that?

Those guys began to shoot. They targeted us and were shooting directly at my car as I drove. At that point, not knowing what to do, I went down under the steering wheel with my hands on the steer and I kept driving. My head was faced down; I just tried to maintain a straight line but the shooting continued. My wife, my over 80-year-old mother-in-law and two other ladies all began to shout. We screamed, “Jesus! Jesus!” amid the gunshots. As they shouted, I sensed my tyres were going off the road so I raised my head slightly to check and it was true. I was headed for a bush nearby so I swerved back into the road and met another set of three hooded men with AK-47s also shooting at the car. We just kept shouting and screaming the name of Jesus because it seemed like all hope was lost and there was nothing else humanly possible. We were surrounded by these terrorists and we couldn’t even think of turning back because the car was in a mess. Our sure bet was to keep moving, hoping we would escape.

How did you escape from the ambush of the terrorists?

As we screamed, it was as though there were other voices that joined in the shout which made it even louder. At that point, I became so courageous. I decided to keep driving no matter what. When we passed the three hooded terrorists, there were four others in front. Those, too, began to shoot, but I didn’t stop. I didn’t also want to look at them so that fear would not grip me. I just knew there was divine intervention. I saw fire explode from the barrels of their guns as they were shooting in front and by the sides. In the midst of all of that, God intervened and we drove past them. We were still hearing the gunshots from behind, one of them, also hooded, used a bike to come after us with speed. He rode close to my side and shook his head and turned back.

Were your tyres not affected?

The pictures are there. They aimed for the tyres but somehow, the bullets landed on the frames of the tyre and affected the tube; I could still manage for a while, though the car started jerking after a few minutes. When I throttled it, it did not respond. It moved slowly on its own, so I decided to manage it like that till I saw a checkpoint in front.

How close was the checkpoint to the scene of the attack?

(The checkpoint was) very close. A mobile police officer was standing by the road unarmed. Another officer was in the shade but he had no gun. They were laughing at us as we drove past. I kept managing the car a little further until I saw that we had a little settlement where we found some oncoming cars parked. It was at that point that it looked like they (the drivers) were aware of the attack and had to park. I went further and I saw two checkpoints but decided to stop at the third one. My car had stopped. So, when I looked at the vehicle, I found out that one of the bullets hit the engine and affected the injector manifold, piercing through it. That was what caused the low compression. So, I got some paper and wrapped it with sellotape to cover the hole. When I started the car, it moved, at least, at a better speed. It was no longer jerking, though it was still vibrating. I was able to move for about 67km before my front tyre by the driver’s seat went flat completely. When I stopped to check, I discovered that another bullet had hit the alloyed rail very close but didn’t get the tyre although the tyre was scratched and had begun to leak. I got a mechanic nearby who topped air into it before we continued.

At what time did that happen?

It was already night. We couldn’t move further, so we moved to a settlement called Alaede, where we slept till the next day. It was there that I was given a tyre tube which they (villagers) helped me fix and then I continued to my destination.

The first thing was that when I saw people in black on the road, bearing AK-47s, I honestly thought they were law enforcement agents. It was on a second look that I noticed that they had red masks on, hiding their identities. When the shooting started, the amazing thing was that I didn’t panic. I was normal. When I notice live ammunition was being shot at us, I knew I couldn’t let go now because I knew how ruthless these terrorists could be. I had just watched the interview of the Methodist prelate who was released from the kidnappers’ den so I had that consciousness in my head. I cannot explain but I had no fear in me. I just knew we were in danger and we knew that only God could intervene for us and that was why we kept calling on the name of Jesus, and he answered his name.

How bad is your car now?

I think pictures alone will do justice to this. When I look at the car, it is hard for me to believe none of us was hurt. The bullets had come from the front, back and side. I remember I saw when one of the terrorists aimed at the glass where my wife was seated, but the bullet hit the door. If you see the pictures, you will see that the bullet rebounded and pierced the door and came out from the other side. The bullet is still inside the car. The mechanic told us that we may have to use fire to be able to get the bullet out. (Laughs) My car is not bulletproof. It is just a regular car.

It seems the terrorists target preachers and clerics because about 16 clerics have been attacked in 2022 alone. Is there a reason for this?

Honestly, I am not a very important person. I am just a preacher of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I wouldn’t say it was a targeted attack on my person. This is because, even after our incident, someone else said they were attacked. One of the persons even lost a loved one. Now, what people do is wait for a military convoy to pass so that all of them would join the convoy to pass. That is the only way to feel safe.

Did you report this case to the authorities since you had evidence?

How do I do that, when I passed a checkpoint that was not far from where I was attacked and I was being laughed at by officers of the law? How do I trust them? It was a mobile police checkpoint, and they were on duty. In fact, they should have heard the sound of the gunshots if they were more attentive. I was even amazed when I saw them standing by. They were not alarmed even as they saw my car pass by. These are people who are supposed to be in charge and have those territories under control, for God’s sake! They were just too casual, and it sent a wrong signal. For me, Nigeria has got to a stage where all we have is just God.

Politics / Insecurity Will Break Nigeria Soon Unless We Return To Regionalism —Gani Adams by Kuginzi: 5:03pm On Aug 06, 2022
The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams, in this interview by BOLA BADMUS, speaks, among other things, on the worsening security situation in the country.

You recently raised the alarm that terrorists were hibernating in the forests of Osun and Ogun states. Is the situation still the same?

I think it is still the same. From all indication, we are yet to hear that they have been flushed out of those places. You will remember that when I gave the information about Ibarapa about two years ago, before the issue of Igangan started, I told the whole world that there were bandits between Igboora and Igangan. I also issued a statement about Kisi; that there were some terrorists attacking and kidnapping them. I said the terrorists had taken over the forest reserve there, the Oyo National Park. We moved to Kisi for a rescue operation, during which we apprehended some suspects, seized some arms and ammunition. That was about two years ago. We, in conjunction with the OPC, hunters and vigilantes, handed the suspects over to the Area Commander. They (the terrorists) were there in Oke-Ogun.

Before the issue of the Sarkin Fulani of Igangan and Wakili arose, I had informed the public about Igboora, in the Ibarapa area. At the end of the day, Sunday Igboho went to Igangan and challenged the Sarkin Fulani. He went there for a rally against the Fulani terrorising the two and other areas. The development led to attacks from different Fulani communities in that area. The killing and maiming of our people was coordinated by Wakili in-between Igangan and Ayete. We moved to apprehend Wakili’s second-in-command in Igboora, the same place I raised the information that they were. We apprehended Wakili and three other suspects. Wakili is still in Agodi prison.

You knew what happened to our members who handed over Wakili to the police. They were arrested alongside Wakili and were slammed with different charges by the Nigeria Police. It was because of our legal application that we were able to secure their freedom after four months in prison. That experience is one of the things that impeded us from moving to security-threatened areas without clearance from the government. Without the police, without clearance from the traditional rulers of the communities, it would be difficult to embark on rescue operations. If the police did not frustrate our efforts on the issue of Wakili, we could have moved to flush them out of the forests without even giving this intelligence to the public. What we experienced regarding the Wakili issue gave us a lot of concern; we are aggrieved. We don’t pray for anarchy but we can’t act without the approval of the government and the traditional rulers of the communities. Even if the government did not give approval, the traditional ruler of a community has a say in what is going on in his community, and so with his consent, we can move. That was one of the reasons why we released the information that there was a band of terrorists with a lot of arms and ammunition in the forests.

Religion / We Don’t Want Your Tithe, Offerings – Pastor Ibiyeomie Tells Yahoo Boys by Kuginzi: 2:47pm On Jul 31, 2022
By Ochogwu Sunday

Pastor David Ibiyeomie of Salvation Ministry has stopped internet fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys, from remitting tithes and offerings to the church.

The popular gospel preacher who spoke during a sermon at the church’s headquarters, Port Harcourt, said the fraudulent activities of the Yahoo boys cannot be justified.

He alleged that some financial institutions and security agencies may be working with the Yahoo boys.

He said, “That is not how to get money. That we preach prosperity does not mean you should go and kill your mother. Talk from now till tomorrow, Yahoo is stealing.

“Stop that nonsense, don’t be stealing money on the internet, work. If only you know how many people that thing has killed. The blood of those you defrauded are on your head.

“Take your tithe to somewhere else. We don’t want it here. Bankers are working with them because how did the money enter their account”?

Politics / Your PVC Is Your Meal Ticket – INEC Commissioner Tells Nigerians by Kuginzi: 2:38pm On Jul 31, 2022
By Hafsat Abdulhamid

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has told Nigerians that their Permanent Voters’ Cards are their meal tickets and should be handled with care.

The National Commissioner of the commission in charge of Bauchi, Yobe, and Borno states, Maj:-Gen Modibo Alkali (rtd) stated this while addressing voters registrants on Sunday.

Alkali urged Nigerians to treat their PVCs like part of their lives.

“Ensure that you get your PVC and handle it as if it is part of your life.

“Don’t sell it to anybody because it is like your voter’s meal ticket. Do you know why it is called a meal ticket? It is because you elect the person who can work for you in your future with it.

“So, if you sell it or you throw it away, then you are selling or throwing away food that you are supposed to eat. So, I want all of you to understand the importance of that PVC,” he said.

The National Commissioner, who said that INEC had been educating the electorate to come out and get themselves registered for their PVC, wondered why there were still more people in the queue for registration in Bauchi State.

“No, there are some processes. If you register, they have to go and print and display it for political parties and local government areas.

“Also, there could be litigations along the line. So you have to allow INEC to do its job. If you don’t register on time, then you will delay the work of INEC,” said the National Commissioner.

He also warned the electorate against double or multiple registrations, saying that whoever is caught in the act would be arrested.

Some of the registration units he visited in the state included the INEC headquarters, Bauchi, Kofaran, Ilelah street, INEC office in Dass Local Government Area as well as Karfin Madaki in Ganjuwa Local Government Area of the state.

Politics / Shettima’s Nomination Unsettles Opposition Parties’ Camps – APC by Kuginzi: 2:37pm On Jul 11, 2022
NNPC, Peter Obi’s aide react

The Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Murtala Ajaka, on Monday, called on Nigerians to ignore opposition parties’ sentiment of religion, saying the choice of Senator Kashim Shettima as vice presidential candidate had unsettled their camps.

This was as the New Nigeria People’s Party warned that fielding Shettima as Tinubu’s running mate would be the final nail that would seal the ambition of the former Lagos State governor.

Tinubu had announced the former Governor of Borno State as his substantive running mate after he had a closed-door meeting with the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), at his residence in Daura, on Sunday.

The announcement also coincided with the withdrawal of the APC placeholder, Ibrahim Masari, who earlier stepped down as the vice presidential nominee.

Masari, the surrogate running mate, stepped aside to pave way for the name of the substantive running mate to be submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission five days to the deadline.

Tinubu, who revealed in his statement on Sunday that he had always been a decisive man, added that he shared same ideology with party leaders, including Shettima.

In a statement released Monday in Abuja, the APC deputy scribe assured Nigerians that the fear of the party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket being nursed in some quarters only existed in the imagination of opposition.

Describing Shettima as a man of knowledge and courage, Ajaka disclosed that the opposition parties, especially the Peoples Democratic Party, had been thrown off-balance and still reeling from Tinubu’s choice of Shettima.

He said: “The sterling qualities of our vice presidential candidate, in person of Senator Kashim Shettima, has once again thrown the opposition parties off-balance. They (PDP and others) would have preferred our presidential candidate to settle for the less so as to make it easy for them to win election (God forbid), but the choice of the trusted and trustworthy Shettima must have disorganised their evil plans, we understand them in the APC.

“While we sympathise with the opposition parties, we appeal to Nigerians, who will eventually be the beneficiaries of good governance under Tinubu-Shettima presidency, to see beyond the sentiments of religion and tribe. Both Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima are not religious fundamentalists or ultra Muslims, their records in public offices are testimonies to rely on.

"As a two-term governor in Borno State, Shettima enjoyed the support of the Christian community throughout his tenure. In fact, the Borno chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) testified that ‘In the history of Borno State, there is no Governor that has been fair to the Christian Community as much as Governor Kashim Shettima.’

“For example, it was Governor Shettima, in the history of Borno, that has sponsored the highest number of Christian Pilgrims every year since 2011 till he left office. This and many other records of mutual respect for all faiths are there to verify in Borno State.”

Ajaka said the APC and its presidential candidate will not be distracted from the goal of winning the 2023 general election at all levels.

“If Borno State has the largest votes in the North-East where Kashim Shettima has been governor for 8 years and now a Senator and still politically relevant, if the APC has enjoyed massive support from this state and the entire North-East and the emergence of Shettima as our vice presidential candidate will deny the candidate of the PDP the smooth ride in the zone, I think the APC and our presidential candidate are politically correct because our main goal for now is to emerge victorious in the coming elections, not forgetting competence which Senator Kashim Shettima represents.”

Reacting to the allegation, National Publicity Secretary of the New Nigeria People’s Party, Major Agbo, said no serious candidate should be scared of Shettima.

According to him, the APC vice presidential candidate is a well known person that does not have any form of credibility.

“The choice of Shettima is not an issue to any serious minded politician in this country. These people are just looking for what to hang on to for survival. The APC knows that their situation is getting worse. The choice of Shettima has made the job easier for the rest of us, especially for my party, because of his antecedent. His antecedent calls for concerns.

“Remember that the Governor who handed over to him accused him in 2017 of being the main sponsor of Boko Haram. It was all over the media. His choice as running mate is the final nail on the coffin of the APC. We don’t see him as a threat or anything to worry about,” he said.

Efforts made to get the reaction of the spokespersons for the Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party proved abortive.

However, Emeka Obasi, media aide to Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, told our correspondent that the ruling APC is just seeking attention.

Religion / Pastor, Ibiyeomie Again Threatens To Kill Anyone Who Insults Bishop Oyedepo by Kuginzi: 2:25pm On Jul 11, 2022
The General Overseer, Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie has again threatened to kill anyone who insults Bishop David Oyedepo, the presiding Bishop of the Faith Tabernacle in Ota, otherwise called Winners’ Chapel International.

The cleric said people can insult him or his wife, but warned that nobody should dare insult his father. Stressing that if Bishop Oyedepo was not alive his Christianity would have been nonsense.

Ibiyeomie told a story of how a man attempted to hurl insults at Oyedepo in his office and he had to shut him out for four years, PM News reports.

He made this known in his Sunday sermon at the Church headquarters in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He said, “I can tell you something: there are people you insult, I won’t forgive you. In human life, the first person you will insult that I won’t forgive you is Oyedepo.

“Insult me, insult my wife, I don’t care but if you take your mouth to touch my wife, you are touching me. If you insult Oyedepo I will kill you, that’s how God is. You know why? If Bishop Oyedepo was not alive, my Christianity would have been nonsense.

“He made me love Christianity. Can you be alive and somebody is insulting your father? I will slap you; you are not born. Don’t you see how I tore that beast to pieces? I will tear you to pieces. I will fight you spiritually, fight you everywhere, fight you law court, till they send you to jail.

“When people fight you, fight them till they go down. God is jealous about you. If we the humans can be jealous about people, God is so jealous about you.

“For four years, I did not pick his call. He said because of Oyedepo? I said, ‘Yes sir, don’t you know where to have your tongue? I knew you because of him; if you insult him, you are insulting my father.’ He said, ‘ah! You are overdoing your own thing.’ I said, before? Okay if you say Oyedepo is bad, me, am I good? You say the chicken is bad and the egg is good?”

Ibiyeomie in 2020 threatened to arrest and kill Daddy Freeze for allegedly insulting and criticising Bishop David Oyedepo of Winners' Chapel.

Politics / 2023: Obi Should Enjoy His Sectional Sympathy, Social Media Frenzy For Now – by Kuginzi: 5:42pm On Jun 26, 2022
By Yemi Balogun

Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Yakubu Ajaka, has said that the former Governor of Anambra State and the presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi should be allowed to enjoy his sectional sympathy and social media frenzy for now.

He said that when political campaigns start, Nigerians would differentiate between boys and men in politics.

Speaking with journalists on Sunday in Abuja, Ajaka also said that the former governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso cannot become the president of Nigeria with a sectional party like New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).

He said, “Just like Kwankwaso, Peter Obi is only enjoying sectional sympathy but a real presidential candidate needs to enjoy acceptability from all parts of the country.

“So, we believe that Peter Obi should enjoy his social media frenzy for now before the real campaign starts very soon.”

The APC chieftain noted that Kwankwaso, who is the presidential candidate of NNPP should return to the ruling party, where he can have a great chance of becoming president in the future.

He stressed that winning one or two states in the North-West won’t make him the president.

He stated: “Kwankwaso knew about the formation of APC, he contributed immensely to its success in 2015 and our leaders hope to repay him at the appropriate time but he cannot be outside to be a beneficiary in the nearest future.

“So, that is why I said it’s not too late for him to return to the APC. That’s where he naturally belongs and has an assurance of becoming a president one day, and not his current sectional NNPP.

“Although, some people might be deceiving him by calling him Mr. President already, but just one or two states in the North-West can’t make him a president. Kwankwaso needs a national party like APC to achieve his presidential ambition. So, I urged him to do the needful before it’s too late,” Ajaka said.

Health / Over 36,000 Taraba Residents HIV Positive – State Govt by Kuginzi: 12:29pm On Jun 26, 2022

The Taraba State government, through the State Agency for the Control of Aids, has again expressed commitment to eliminate the virus from the State come 2030.

This was made known at the weekly review performance of the Implementation partners working across HIV, tuberculosis and Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) in the State during the weekend.

Out of this number on treatment, 20,200 are said to be virally suppressed.

The weekly review, which took place at the Situation room, located in the premises of the State secretariat, brought together various implementation partners, including RISE Nigeria, World Health Organization, among others.

Politics / Atiku: The Most Pertinent Tribute To Heroes Of Democracy Is To Kick Out APC by Kuginzi: 4:57pm On Jun 12, 2022
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, has called on Nigerians to kick out the All Progressives Congress (APC) from power during the general elections in 2023.

He made the call on Sunday in his Democracy Day message, saying that was the most important tribute the people could pay to the heroes of democracy in the country.

Atiku believes the occasion is an auspicious period to rally around all compatriots to think and work in concert for the unity, security, equity, inclusivity, socio-economic prosperity and equitable development of the country.

He urged Nigerians to seize the opportunity to reinforce their commitment to the sacrifices made by the pioneers of the nation’s independence.

According to the former vice president, it is visible that the present administration has brought upon the people the worst form of government.

He, therefore, asked them to reject the APC government which he described as inept, unpopular, insensitive, and clueless.

Atiku stressed that a party that could not offer the people honesty on its pledged manifestos with regards to security, economic growth, and anti-corruption should not be honoured with another ‘wasteful’ tenure.

For him, it is time to prove to APC politicians that power truly belongs to the people via the use of ballots.

Read the full text of the PDP presidential candidate’s message below:

This year’s Democracy Day provides us with no room to stomach rhyme and rhetoric. But salient facts, sobriety, and the promise of a better tomorrow.

In fact, this historic June 12 as Democracy Day in Nigeria, is indeed one of the most epochal political events in our nation, just before the February 2023 general elections.

Hence, it is an auspicious period to rally around all compatriots; to think and work in concert for the unity, security, equity, inclusivity, socio-economic prosperity and equitable development of our dear country.

Let’s seize this unique opportunity of Democracy Day to reinforce our firm commitment to the sacrifices made by the pioneers of our country’s independence and salute the courage and selflessness of the pathfinders of our current freedom and liberty; by pursuing with vim and vigour the fundamentals of our Constitution, the pillars and principles of rule of law, of electoral transparency and equity and unity in diversity.

Let’s not despair by folding our arms in hapless helplessness. “The last thing that should die in a person is hope”.

Meanwhile, let’s continue to do our civic duty and responsibility to salvage our dear country together; saving her from falling off precariously from current socio-economic cliff into an abysmal catastrophic end of a failed state, as predicted by some naysayers!

Thus, the time is ripe for all adult Nigerians to register to vote; vote and defend their votes. For people’s participation is the beauty of democracy.

Let’s gather the numbers and commitment to kick out APC – the borrowing and sorrowing party. Let’s remember that Nigeria’s current debt burden stands at over N41 trillion with less than $40billion in reserve.

It is visible that the Buhari administration has brought upon our commonality the worst form of government, where insecurity, disunity, inequity, lack of job opportunity, dwindling economic prosperity and hyper inflation stare us all in the face.

Hence, we should by next year reject an inept, unpopular and insensitive and clueless APC government.

A ruling party that offers crass opportunism and cronyism can never elevate nor uplift a diverse and secular country as ours.

The APC that couldn’t offer Nigerians honesty on their pledged manifestos with regards to security, economic growth and anti-corruption; shouldn’t be honoured with another wasteful tenure of pillage, brigandage and carnage!

Here’s the season to prove to dishonest APC politicians that power truly belongs to the people via the use of the ballots.

A government that impoverishes us divides us along our fault lines, make us insecure, make us hungry, starve us of public amenities like electricity and fuel and perpetually shut down gates of universities against our undergraduates, due to no fault of the students and causing untold sorrow to their parents and sponsors; such a party should never be allowed to occupy esteemed offices in government at any level in our country.

At this juncture, the most pertinent tribute that we can effectively pay to our heroes past, those who struggled to enthrone and sustain Democracy in Nigeria, is to kick out the APC; a tainted government that was given a valuable mandate, but came unprepared about what to do. They squandered a precious political opportunity, by dashing the hopes of a trusting majority of the electorate. Not again, we should all clamour. Say no to the doom of bad governance; say yes to the prospect of a better Nigeria in 2023.

Let’s work together to fix our country and return the boom of days of yore. Let’s kick out the APC.

I stand with you all on the drive to reposition our country for greatness.

I will unify all and sundry, enforce solid security nationwide, create jobs through private sector unhindered participation and inclusivity, break government monopoly to give wings for business to thrive, provide enabling infrastructural environment to reduce the cost of production, cut governance costs through devolution of powers to other tiers of government, and provide incentives to hardworking and entrepreneurial Nigerians.

Please trust yours truly, to deliver on these promises. We did it in the past under President Olusegun Obasanjo/Atiku Abubakar administration. We paid off Nigeria’s global debt, and liberalised the banking and telecommunications sectors, among others.

But dreams don’t come true if positive action is not activated and implemented. Let’s not rest on our oars, let’s be like the dynamic eagle and soar! Let’s rekindle hope by not giving up on the dream of a better Nigeria.

Long live Democracy in Nigeria. -AA

Foreign Affairs / China Vows ‘fight To The End’ To Stop Taiwan Independence by Kuginzi: 4:47pm On Jun 12, 2022
China will “fight to the very end” to stop Taiwanese independence, the country’s defence minister vowed Sunday, stoking already soaring tensions with the United States over the island.

The superpowers are locked in a growing war of words over the self-ruled, democratic island, which Beijing views as part of its territory awaiting reunification.

Frequent Chinese aircraft incursions near Taiwan have raised the diplomatic temperature, and on Saturday US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin accused Beijing of “destabilising” military activity, in a speech to the Shangri-La Dialogue security summit.

Defence Minister Wei Fenghe hit back in a fiery address at the same event, saying Beijing had “no choice” but to fight if attempts are made to separate Taiwan from China.

“We will fight at all cost, and we will fight to the very end,” he told the summit, which brings together defence ministers from Asia and around the world.

“No one should ever underestimate the resolve and ability of the Chinese armed forces to safeguard its territorial integrity.”

“Those who pursue Taiwanese independence in an attempt to split China will definitely come to no good end,” he added.

Wei urged Washington to “stop smearing and containing China… stop interfering in China’s internal affairs and stop harming China’s interests”.

But he also struck a more conciliatory tone at points, calling for a “stable” China-US relationship, which he said was “vital for global peace”.

During his address, Austin stressed the importance of “fully open lines of communication with China’s defence leaders” in avoiding miscalculations.

The pair held their first face-to-face talks on the sidelines of the summit in Singapore on Friday, during which they also clashed over Taiwan.

Tensions over Taiwan have escalated in particular due to increasing Chinese military aircraft incursions into the island’s air defence identification zone (ADIZ).

President Joe Biden, during a visit to Japan last month, appeared to break decades of US policy when, in response to a question, he said Washington would defend Taiwan militarily if it was attacked by China.

The White House has since insisted its policy of “strategic ambiguity” over whether or not it would intervene had not changed.

Disputed sea ‘rampage’
Despite the heightened tensions, analysts said the fact Austin and Wei were willing to meet in person offered a small sign of hope.

“Talking is better than not talking,” Ian Chong, associate professor of political science at the National University of Singapore, who is attending the summit, told AFP.

“But I think at this point, we won’t be seeing any breakthroughs. Maybe it’ll lead to something in future.”

The dispute is just the latest between Washington and Beijing, who have clashed over everything from the South China Sea to human rights and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

China’s expansive claims to the sea, through which trillions of dollars in shipping trade passes annually, have stoked tensions with rival claimants Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam.

China, whose historical claims were rejected in a landmark 2016 Hague ruling, has been accused of flying its planes and sailing its boats close to the coastlines of rival claimants, and of intercepting patrol planes in international airspace in a dangerous fashion.

While the superpowers traded blows, there were more positive signs for Australia and China’s strained ties as the countries’ defence ministers met for the first time in three years.

Richard Marles held talks for over an hour with Wei on the sidelines of the summit, which wrapped up Sunday.

Relations had grown frosty of late over issues including Canberra’s call for an independent probe into the origins of the coronavirus pandemic, with China responding by imposing tariffs and disrupting more than a dozen key industries.

In a change of tone to the gathering’s geopolitical sparring, Fiji’s defence minister warned that the biggest threat facing his country was climate change, rather than conflict.

“Machine guns, fighter jets, ships… are not our primary security concern,” Inia Seruiratu said. “The single greatest threat to our very existence is… human-induced, devastating climate change.”

Politics / Sule Lamido Tells Afenifere, Ohanaeze,: Why We Blocked Power Shift In PDP To Sou by Kuginzi: 8:34am On Jun 12, 2022
Calls zoning clamour APC’s problem

I don’t listen to ACF on political issues’

• Speaks on Atiku, Tambuwal, Wike deals before ex-VP clinched PDP ticket

My son joined Jigawa gov’ship race behind my back’

By Lekan Bilesanmi and Bashir Bello

The emergence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has put zoning afresh on the front burner. Recall that Yoruba group, Afenifere, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) and Igbo group, Ohanaeze, have been at the forefront of the campaign for power shift to the South in 2023 when Nigerians elect President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor. In this interview, a senior leader of the PDP and former governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, speaks elaborately on why the PDP came up with Atiku as its presidential candidate contrary to the southern groups’ expectation.

Your party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has produced former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as presidential flag bearer. What is your take on the primary and what are your hopes about your candidate?

PDP has got a very long history. In fact, the history of Nigeria in the last 25 years is purely PDP. And before then what were we having and from where are we coming? For you to answer what Nigeria is today, you have to know what were we before today and the history. This will give an idea on the kind of wisdom and sacrifice made by people based on what they think is good for this country. PDP leaders are leaders in their own right…coming from the first generation political leaders of Nigeria. And those leaders believe intensely in Nigeria. Whatever they do, they don’t consider personal interest but the larger picture. And even if at all they have interest, they try to pursue everything through Nigeria. But, today, people are ambitious and so they forced Nigeria to follow them. The country has been serving Nigerians and the interest of… It is now fatigued, it is tired. Why can’t we for once serve the country? We are producing people, why can’t we build the country first? The cow has been milked over and over again; we are now milking the blood of the cow. What I am saying is this: There were lots of maybe concerns, worries, curiosity or whatever before our (PDP) convention. Non-state actors (regional formations and organizations) were making noise outside on political matters. They were not speaking with the political parties but began to talk about the parties. And people wanted to know what was going to come out of the PDP and I said “look, PDP is a political party which has got a history and therefore whatever might be the case, when it matters most we will be there for Nigeria. No matter what we do, how we fight, when the critical time comes, we will bury everything and put Nigeria first”. And that is what we did. People were busy saying all sorts of things that, because of crisis in PDP, the party might likely fall because the leaders are very weak or divided. Yes, at the end of the day and when it matters most, we will turn up and be there for Nigeria.

Politics / Blackout: Osun Community Protests 12 Years Total Darkness by Kuginzi: 8:22am On Jun 12, 2022
By Francis Ezediuno

Residents of Garage Olode in Ife South Local Government Area of Osun State, on Saturday, protested the total blackout the town had been subjected to in the past 12 years.

The protesters, who trooped out en-masse to express their grievance over the slow pace of the ongoing electrification and reconnection project embarked on by the Osun State Government, blocked the busy Ondo-Ife road.

This development caused disruption in the smooth flow of traffic on the stretch of the road.

They were armed with placards with different inscriptions all calling on Governor Adegboyega Oyetola to ensure their stay in darkness ended soon.

Several motorists and their passengers were left stranded as the busy road was blocked for over two hours by the angry protesters.

On enquiry, the Osun Commissioner for Works, Oluremi Omowaiye stated that within the next three weeks, power would be restored to the town.

Omowaiye added that the State government had put in a lot into the project

In his words, “It is quite unfortunate they have not had power supply since 2009 but the good news is that within the next 3 weeks, the power restoration project embarked on by Oyetola administration will be completed and there will be power.

“Oyetola administration has put in a lot into the project I can confirm. So they will smile soon.”

DAILY POST gathered that the State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola had in June, 2021, flagged-off the reconnection of the town to the national grid but the project has not seen the light of the day as darkness continued to persist in the town and its surrounding communities.

Foreign Affairs / Putin 'Given 3 Years To Live By Doctors' Due To 'Rapidly Progressing Cancer',Spy by Kuginzi: 3:45pm On May 29, 2022
Russian President, Vladimir Putin has reportedly been warned he has just three to years to live as the country's intelligence sources become increasingly worried about their ailing leader.

An FSB officer described the Russian president's condition as a 'severe form of rapidly progressing cancer', as speculation ramped up that Putin was suffering with some form of serious illness amid the invasion of Ukraine, Daily Mail reports.

The spy explained the wartime leader has 'no more than two to three years' left and he is also losing his sight, reports the Mirror.
News of the Russian leader's terminal illness emerged as part of a secret message from the Russian agent to fugitive and former FSB agent Boris Karpichkov.

The message warned Putin is refusing to wear glasses over fears it would admit a form of weakness, and he is now lashing out at his subordinates with 'uncontrolled fury'.
The developments come as news of his deteriorating health continues to leak out of Russia from a Telegram channel which claims to have sources inside the Kremlin.
Putin reportedly underwent 'successful' cancer surgery this month and is recovering following advice from medics that treatment was 'essential', according to Telegram channel General SVR.

The news emerged just hours before Putin appeared on state TV meeting with ally Alexander Lukashenko in Sochi, when he was caught on camera awkwardly twisting his feet while the pair sat down for talks.

It is the second time Putin has been filmed making the odd movement, which was caught on camera during a meeting with Tajikistan's president a week ago, and comes off the back of rumours that he is suffering Parkinson's.
Emomali Rahmon appeared to notice the movement during his meeting with Putin and glanced at the leader's feet, though did not raise it in conversation.
Critics have suggested the twisting motion could be an attempt to cover up the kind of involuntary twitches caused by Parkinson's - after Putin was seen shaking his arm and led before another meeting with Lukashenko on February 18.
Since then, he has been seen to grip the arms of chairs and corners of tables in what some believe to be an effort to disguise any shaking.
Other spooks have also hinted at the strongman's poor health condition, warning he was unable to maintain concentration for long periods of time without taking breaks 'for treatment'.

Other spooks have also hinted at the strongman's poor health condition, warning he was unable to maintain concentration for long periods of time without taking breaks 'for treatment'.
Christopher Steele, a former MI6 Russia desk officer explained Putin was constantly monitored and accompanied by a team of doctors, as rumours of a new Kremlin succession plan continue to swirl.
Whispers about Putin's health began at least two years ago when he was said to be suffering both Parkinson's and cancer, but have received renewed attention in the wake of his invasion of Ukraine.
The Kremlin has not commented on the latest allegations of Putin's ill-health, but regularly denies he is suffering any kind of difficulties.
General SVR wrote last week: 'On the night of Monday May 16 to Tuesday May 17, Russian President Vladimir Putin underwent a surgical operation.
'The fact that Putin should be operated on as soon as possible was insisted upon by his attending physicians.
'According to the doctors involved in the treatment of the President, the operation was successful.
'We have already talked about the fact that Putin was personally absent from the information space from May 17 to May 19 and was not available even to his inner circle, with the exception of Nikolai Patrushev, Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation.
