The Governor of Ondo State, Rotimi Akeredolu, has said those who are referred to as bandits in Zamfara are actually terrorists. Akeredolu said this on Tuesday while receiving members of the Governing Board of the Federal University of Technology, Akure led by the Chairman, Ambassador Dr. Godknows Boladie Igali; and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Adeola Fuwape; at the Cocoa Conference Hall of the Governor’s Office, Alagbaka, Akure. The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Richard Olatunde, in a statement said the Governor emphasised the need to make the country livable for the people so as to harness their talents for national growth. Speaking on the growth of Science and Technology in the country, Akeredolu said, “For us in science and technology, we need to do more. Japanese, Chinese and other developed countries send people to where science is the best. We have heard of countries that send their people to the USA to train on Science and Technology. “They didn’t stay there. They went back to their country to develop it. Commitment to one’s country is key. But we need to make this country a livable place so that the young ones will be confident and have hope to live in this country.” The Governor, who stressed that the people are living in fear, noted that something must be done urgently to address the situation and restore hope to the minds of the people. “Look at what is happening in Zamfara. They try to clothe it and call them bandits. They are terrorists. So, the growth in science can not be based on just your charge but the conducive environment in the country,” he said. Akeredolu emphasised the need for the country to embrace modern ways of animal husbandry, describing open grazing as old and now illegal in the state. He said, “Today, I can say there are modern ways of animal husbandry and we have to take the bull by the horns. We are not afraid to take decisions. Modernity has taught us that you can extract more milk from cows in a modern way better than when you take them from one place to another. It is about science. People have developed that science. “I’m happy when I see Mr President go to Katsina and visit his cows. They are well kept. Technology of animal husbandry, we must embrace it.” https://www.google.com/url?q=https://punchng.com/terrorists-in-zamfara-are-being-clothed-as-bandits-says-akeredolu/&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwiptKicqu3yAhUGC-wKHSFICHQQlO8DegQIBRAH&usg=AOvVaw0bOOZvdHQNQZk1y4MQwVS5

The Nigerian government has opened the application portal for the Nigeria Jubilee Fellow Programme which targets 200,000 graduates. Nigeria Jubilee Fellow Programme is aimed at getting work placement for Nigerian graduates who have completed the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme. President Muhammadu Buhari last Tuesday said the Nigeria Jubilee Fellow Programme “is expected to create new opportunities for 20,000 graduates annually” will “maximise the opportunities presented – for 12 months, with or without job experience, thereby connecting them with local job opportunities.” The portal was opened Monday to interested applicants. It will be open to applicants for six weeks between September 6 and October 20, 2021. The Nigeria Jubilee Fellow Programme is a youth empowerment partnership initiative between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The programme seeks to connect talented graduates with local job opportunities that apply their expertise while equipping them with world-class practical knowledge and relevant skills. It provides applicants with three options for applicants after completing the fellowship which includes retainment with respective host organisations, entrepreneurship opportunities, and a platform to compete and access future jobs and employment opportunities. Putschists who seized power in Guinea at the weekend have pledged to release “political detainees” held under ex-president Alpha Conde and repeated a vow to hold talks on forming a new government. Special forces led by Lieutenant Colonel Mamady Doumbouya seized power in the impoverished West African state on Sunday and arrested the president, sparking international condemnation. The shock move came amid increasing criticism of the 83-year-old for perceived authoritarianism, with dozens of opposition activists arrested after a violently disputed election last year. In an announcement on Monday evening, the military called on the justice ministry to do what it can to release “political detainees” as soon as possible. Guinea’s leading opposition coalition FNDC — many of whose members were arrested under Conde — said its activists had been expected to be released on Monday. But as supporters gathered at the coalition’s urging outside the central prison in the capital Conakry, no prisoner has yet been released. Doumbouya on Tuesday also repeated a pledge, first made after the putsch, to hold talks on forming a new government in the troubled country. “The government to be installed will be that of national unity and will ensure this political transition,” he tweeted. Sunday’s coup triggered broad diplomatic condemnation — including from the United States, European Union, African Union and the West African bloc ECOWAS — with calls for Conde’s release. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is due to hold a virtual extraordinary summit to discuss the situation on Wednesday. Public discontent in Guinea had been brewing for months over a flatlining Covid-hit economy and the leadership of Conde, who became the first democratically elected president in 2010 and was re-elected in 2015. But last year, Conde pushed through a new constitution that allowed him to run for a third term in October 2020. The move sparked mass demonstrations in which dozens of protesters were killed. Conde won the October election but the political opposition maintained the poll was a sham. Doumbouya, hours after taking power, appeared on television and accused the government of “endemic corruption” and of “trampling on citizens’ rights”. Conde’s whereabouts are currently unknown, although the military has guaranteed his safety. A video sent to AFP by the putschists on Sunday showed a rumpled-looking Conde sitting on a sofa, in jeans and a partly unbuttoned shirt, surrounded by troops. He refused to answer a question about whether he was being mistreated. ‘Peaceful democracy’ The military coup was met with jubilation in some parts of Conakry, where residents turned out on the streets to applaud passing soldiers. Cellou Dalein Diallo, the country’s main opposition leader, also expressed his support for the new military government, in the hope that it will lead to “a peaceful democracy” in the nation of 13 million people. On Monday, Diallo’s opposition coalition ANAD urged the ruling military to establish “legitimate institutions capable of implementing reforms” and to uphold the rule of law. Hours after the coup, Guinea’s putschists dissolved the constitution and the government. No deaths have been officially reported in the putsch, although Guinean media has reported that five presidential guards were killed. AFP was unable to independently confirm the account. No ‘witch hunt’ “We are no longer going to entrust politics to one man, we are going to entrust politics to the people,” Doumbouya told public television on Sunday, with the national flag draped over his fatigues. Then on Monday, in his first public appearance as military leader, he promised that there would be no “witch hunt” against former government members. Ministers have nonetheless been banned from leaving the country. Doumbouya has also sought to reassure the business community, alarmed over the potential for disruptions in commodity supply chains. Mining is the economic backbone of Guinea, one of the world’s poorest countries despite its abundant mineral resources, from bauxite and iron ore to gold and diamonds. Guinea will continue to uphold “all its undertakings and mining agreements,” Doumbouya said. The coup leader is in his early forties and was trained at France’s Ecole de Guerre military academy. He was also a member of the French Foreign Legion. Guinea has spent decades under the authoritarian rule since its independence from France in 1958. The latest coup is the third in the country’s history. https://www.google.com/url?q=https://m.guardian.ng/news/guinea-putschists-promise-to-free-political-detainees/&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwjVhuShje3yAhXGNuwKHUjiCCgQlO8DMAR6BAgEEAc&usg=AOvVaw0frgN9RudXZTX3z40ewQE_

A prominent Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has declared that the recent military force going on in Zamfara State against the bandits and herdsmen is counterproductive and might not yield the most positive results. This was even as he posited that the authorities ought to have known by now that the bandits are going nowhere and it will need a non-kinetic approach to solve the current security challenges. He made this known on his Facebook page on Monday morning titled “Zamfara: The Flaring of Crisis”. Drawing an analogy from the experiences the state had passed through, the cleric noted that this was a state that came to the limelight 20 years ago, when the Shariah legal system was introduced. But he alleged if those who were at the helm of affairs promoted literacy and economic empowerment, the state could have become a shining example for others. He noted that because it was political, Shariah fizzled out and 10 years later cattle rustling became the order of the day. “This massive movement of rustled cattle greatly reduced their population. Most of the rustling first affected the rural herdsmen and it became more elaborate in the North-Western region. Herdsmen were left with only one of three options, to join the rustlers or pay tribute to rustlers for protection or lose their cattle. “In 2014, the military ‘intervention’ in the Birnin-Gwari Forest to fight cattle rustling changed the headsmen into a resistance movement as many innocent Fulani Ruga settlements were murdered, men, women, and children in hundreds.” https://www.google.com/url?q=https://tribuneonlineng.com/dont-use-military-force-on-bandits-sheikh-gumi/&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwjO0cvDpOzyAhUFDOwKHbwXAZsQlO8DMAV6BAgAEAM&usg=AOvVaw0E6gPewKbhdY4LWPE8t3WK
