An Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan on Monday extended an interim order restraining the Department of State Services, and the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), from arresting, killing, or harassing Yoruba nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho. The court presided over by Justice Ladiran Akintola also extended the order stopping the DSS and AGF from freezing the accounts of the embattled activist facing trial in Cotonou, Benin Republic. Lead counsel for Igboho, Yomi Aliyu (SAN), confirmed the development to The PUNCH on Monday after the ruling. He said, “The judge said the interim order of injunction should continue until September 7 when we will go back to court.” The PUNCH had earlier reported that that Justice Akintola had on August 4, 2021, ordered the secret police and the AGF not to arrest Igboho or freeze his bank accounts. Counsel for the AGF, E. Simeon, had appealed the court to vacate its earlier restraining judgement but Aliyu said he had filed for an extension of the order on August 26, 2021, therefore, the new application should not be granted. Simeon consequently sought another adjournment for him to reply to the application as the time frame of seven days had not elapsed. On his part, the DSS lawyer, T. Nurudeen, said he had not been served with the new processes, urging the court to adjourn the case. Justice Akintola subsequently adjourned the case till September 7, 2021, for hearing. Igboho had through his counsel approached the court and filed an originating summon alongside an application praying the court to stop the DSS and the AGF from arresting him. He is also seeking N5bn damages for the destruction of his house and cars. Igboho, wanted by the DSS, has been in detention in Cotonou, Benin Republic, since July 19, 2021, when he was arrested at an airport as he tried to board a Germany-bound flight. The DSS had raided his Ibadan residence on July 1, 2021, killed two of his associates and arrested 12 others. Igboho and the leader of the umbrella body of the Yoruba self-determination group known as Ilana Omo Oodua, Banji Akintoye, have been seen together at press conferences and rallies championing the cause to secede from the Nigerian state and establish a Yoruba Nation despite the Federal Government’s insistence of a united and indissoluble Nigeria. Akintoye, 86, said he relocated to Benin Republic to ensure the release of 48-year-old Igboho. https://www.google.com/url?q=https://punchng.com/breaking-court-extends-order-restraining-dss-agf-from-arresting-igboho/&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwjV5Jap-9jyAhWJ2hQKHQVkBs4QlO8DMAZ6BAgEEAc&usg=AOvVaw2W1pzD9nfpkZONk8R3eDJe

government implemented the VAT on LPG imports about three weeks ago and some dealers were also mandated to pay the tax for commodities imported several months ago. Operators told our correspondent that Nigeria imports about 70 per cent of the commodity, while the rest was mainly supplied by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas company. It was also gathered that the cost of a 12.5kg of cooking gas that sold for about N3,500 in December 2020 had jumped to as high as N6,800 in parts of Abuja. A resident along the Lagos-Ibadan road said she bought the commodity on Sunday at N7,200 in Lagos, as dealers projected that the cost might hit N10,000 in December this year. Operators stated the development had made small businesses and homes in rural and semi-urban areas to revert to firewood and charcoal, as the purchase of cooking gas had plunged in recent months. The National Chairman, Liquefied Petroleum Gas Retailers Association of Nigeria, Michael Umudu, said there were three factors that caused the surge in price. He said, “There are three major factors to the hike in prices. Firstly, about 70 per cent of the gas we consume in Nigeria is imported and importers have to contend with the high cost of foreign exchange. “Secondly, there is a rise in the price of petroleum products in the international market and because of that, the cost of LPG has equally gone up. So importers now pay more on imports. “And thirdly, the government added VAT on imported LPG about three weeks ago. It (VAT) was 7.5 per cent of the cost of the commodity and this exacerbated the price hike of cooking gas in the past three weeks.” Umudu stated that before the introduction of VAT, foreign exchange and cost of petroleum products in the international market had been the factors causing the rise in price. “Around November/December last year, 12.5kg was sold at about N3,500, but in July it went up to around N5,500 and when VAT was introduced about three weeks ago, it now escalated to about N6,500 and above,” he stated. Umudu added, “The price hike seems to be happening on a daily basis and nobody can tell when it will stop. There has been a lot of appeal to the government to find a way of persuading NLNG to increase its domestic supply so that the product can be affordable. “NLNG supplies about 35 per cent of the gas we consume locally and that percentage is not adequate. And the gas sold by NLNG is even sold at international price and is priced in dollar not naira.” On the cost of the commodity in metric tonnes, Umudu, replied, “20MT is now in the average of about N8m. And before VAT was introduced, the price of 20MT was around N6.8m to N7m, which was the highest price then.” He noted that consequent to that, there has been an upsurge in the use of firewood and other alternative energy sources nowadays. “If you come to Lagos, you will see heaps of firewood like groundnut pyramids. Many people who use LPG to run their small businesses cannot cope again because of the price. They are in crisis right now; some of them are now using firewood, others, charcoal,” he stated. Umudu added, “Many people in the rural and semi-urban areas are dropping their cylinders. Those who find it difficult to get alternatives are actually going through a very hard time.” Also speaking on the issue, the Executive Secretary, Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, Bassey Essien, said the cost of 12.5kg gas could hit N10,000 in December. He said, “If by December they (government) don’t take time to address this surge, it (12.5kg) will be N10,000. We are not the one causing this, rather it is the government. We sell what we get.” On what could be done, he replied, “The volume we produce in Nigeria is just about 40 per cent of the total consumption; the rest is imported. And you don’t have a forex window for these people to access to import gas. And secondly, you suddenly woke up and said you want to start imposing VAT on imported gas, which was removed several years back. And now, you didn’t even start it fresh, rather you said it is going to be in retrospect, starting from several months back.” He added, “And you are imposing billions in taxes on gas imports, for instance, you ask one company to pay about N4bn as tax. Now if they pay that money, some other person needs to shoulder this cost.” On what the government was doing about the development, the spokesperson of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Garba-Deen Muhammad, said the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva, had said the commodity was deregulated. Muhammed, who served as the media aide to Sylva before switching to become NNPC spokesperson recently, said, “The minister answered this question during his last press briefing two weeks ago.” At the briefing, Sylva had said, “We are not in position to determine gas pricing because gas is not a regulated product. But, of course, we are also very concerned that prices are rising and so I am actually doing something about it in the interest of the ordinary Nigerian. “I am calling some of the suppliers to discuss the reason for this hike.” He added that the intervention was outside government role. https://www.google.com/url?q=https://punchng.com/fg-implements-cooking-gas-imports-tax-price-jumps-by-100/&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwia-4e1iNjyAhUIvaQKHZOpDyoQlO8DegQIBRAT&usg=AOvVaw1pQOokxNs3ZA3JaX82GifZ

A Nigerian soldier identified as Adeoye Oluwole has been accused of beating a 22-year-old man, Hope Tava Anthony to death for slapping his daughter during a quarrel that occurred in a church in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State. It was gathered that the deceased and the soldier’s daughter, identified as Adeoye Precious, had a misunderstanding after he confronted her for insulting their reverend father, on Friday, August 25, 2021. Precious was said to have also insulted Anthony and his late father, which led him to slap her. The matter was later resolved and both of them were punished in church but Precious went home to report to her father, who picked Anthony up and took him to Ilese Sappers Barracks, where he was beaten mercilessly. “It was the people around that begged for him before the soldier allowed him to go after a severe beating. On getting home, he refused to tell his widowed mum what happened, maybe he didn’t want to hurt her. “He had complained of having a headache and body pain and said he needed some rest. He went to bed on Friday night and never woke up. He was taken to the hospital yesterday, where doctors confirmed that he died from internal bleeding. “He was the only son of his mum. She’s devastated and doesn’t know what to do,” a member of the church said. Speaking to SaharaReporters, a member of Anthony’s family demands justice, describing the deceased as a lovely person. “He was a young man filled with life, I still can’t believe he died just like that,” he said. https://www.google.com/url?q=http://saharareporters.com/2021/08/29/nigerian-soldier-kills-parents-22-year-old-only-son-slapping-his-daughter-church&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwjNm6mkv9byAhXJ8qQKHTC9DlAQlO8DMAV6BAgEEAM&usg=AOvVaw3KWq5kTN793IPUWqDOQmJg

The Defence Intelligence Agency has declared a former Nigerian Navy Commodore, Kunle Olawunmi, wanted for exposing in an interview how the President Muhammadu Buhari's administration refused to probe high profile politicians whom Boko Haram terrorists named as their sponsors. SaharaReporters learnt that the DIA asked Olawunmi to come to its headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday with his international passport, which may be seized. The Defence Intelligence Agency is the primary military intelligence agency of Nigeria. “The agency has declared retired Navy Commodore Kunle Olawunmi wanted for spilling the beans over Boko Haram sponsors in the Buhari regime. They asked him to come with his international passport on Tuesday to the DIA office in Abuja,” a top source said. SaharaReporters had last Wednesday reported that Olawunmi spoke when he featured on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ breakfast programme. He had condemned Tuesday's attack by bloodthirsty bandits on the Kaduna campus of Nigeria’s foremost military university, the Nigerian Defence Academy, where two military officers were killed and another kidnapped. The Professor of Global Security Studies had said, “It is an aberration; you don’t attack the Nigerian Defence Academy and get away with it. In 2017, I carried out an investigation by the Minister of Defence that wanted me to check what was going on with the training and the security there (NDA). I remember I spent about a week in the NDA with the commandant and the staff but something struck me: every Friday, the gate of NDA is thrown open and everybody has access to pray in the mosque. “On Fridays, you are going to see the same thing happening across all military formations in the country. If you go to Defence Headquarters, I served at the Defence Headquarters as the Deputy Director, Defence Administration, between 2015 and 2017, throughout my two years at Defence Headquarters, I received visitors twice because of the strict security architecture there but every Friday, the gate of the Defence Headquarters is thrown wide open for everybody to come in and observe Juma’at. “That is the time the terrorists have the time to profile our security environment. It has always been the case. I have served the military intelligence for the past 35 years. Our problem is religion and socio-cultural.” Olawunmi had added that he was a member of the Intelligence Brief at the Defence Headquarters during the leadership of the then Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin (retd.). The intelligence expert said he told the then CDS that the centre of gravity of the Boko Haram insurgency ravaging the North-East and spreading to other parts of Nigeria was the sponsor. “I told General Olonisakin then that the centre of this problem cannot be solved the same way we solved the problem of the Niger Delta. The Niger Delta problem was solved during (Ex-President Umaru) Yar’adua basically by me and I told them that we can’t use that same template for Boko Haram. “I told General Olonisakin to look at the centre of gravity of the problem. I was made a member of the committee in 2016-2017 including former Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru that died. “I told them that the centre of gravity of Boko Haram in Nigeria is the sponsors of the programme. It was beyond us because the job we needed to do was kinetic but we cannot resolve the issues of sponsors of Boko Haram that were in Buhari’s government that we know them. That was why we couldn’t pursue that aspect that could have resolved the issue because we need to arrest people. “Recently, 400 people were gathered as sponsors of Boko Haram, why is it that the Buhari government has refused to try them? Why can’t this government bring them to trial if not that they are partisan and part of the charade that is going on? “You remember this Boko Haram issue started in 2012 and I was in the military intelligence at that time. We arrested those people. My organisation conducted interrogation and they (suspects) mentioned names. I can’t come on air and start mentioning names of people that are presently in government that I know that the boys that we arrested mentioned. Some of them are governors now, some of them are in the Senate, some of them are in Aso Rock. “Why should a government decide to cause this kind of embarrassment and insecurity to the sense of what happened yesterday (Tuesday at the NDA)?” Olawunmi had also said that the Department of State Services had tremendous information on terrorists but they could not do anything except by the body language of the Commander-In-Chief. https://www.google.com/url?q=http://saharareporters.com/2021/08/28/breaking-defence-intelligence-agency-declares-retired-commodore-olawunmi-wanted-over&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwik74eq5dPyAhUB3KQKHVXOBk8QlO8DMAZ6BAgDEAc&usg=AOvVaw092B3fJo7wgqWVMeZ02bJB

Few months after it was delisted on Google Play Store, Nigeria’s foremost social media network Crowwe App, has been restored on the Play Store and App store for both android and IOS mobile phone users. The Crowwe app which has been described as an instant messaging and financial transaction app comes with digital mobile wallet functionality capable of enabling users within the platform transfer and receive money while chatting. In a recent statement by the C.E.O of the Gloomme Business Connections Ltd, owners of Crowwe, Anya Ifunanya, she said the App was fully back in a smarter, savvier, slick and better form. According to her, “Against the backdrop and assertion from few social media users that Crowwe was taken down by Google Play Store that was never the case. “Crowwe has chosen to thrive in light of these changes, Crowwe App was just off the store listing page for a short while, to afford our technical team ample time to effect and implement all of the feedbacks gotten from numerous users across the country. “Because Crowwe is purely local content, our team of young tech developers, all here in Nigeria, have been working day and night to ensure Crowwe comes back in a more refined way that can meet the needs of users. “The design interface is much better than it used to be, the user experience is top notch, because we have upgraded the process of signing up and navigating through the platform and made it very much easy and seamless for everyone. “For Social media users who already signed up on the platform, all you need to do is to download the updated version of Crowwe App on your android or iOS app’s store listing page and you are good to go on Crowwe.” Ifunanya described Crowwe as a generational test of resilience, and a platform that has chosen to thrive and be competitive in a global tech space. “Our goal is to build a world-class Nigerian social media app that does better than the ones brought to us from the west in terms of building fortune, earning fame, and having fun. “The encouragement and constant feedback on how we can better improve our user experience within the app by Nigerians have helped us make smarter choices and also made our resolve and commitment stronger,” she said. https://www.google.com/url?q=https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2021/08/28/google-restores-crowwe-social-networking-platform/&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwjMto-74dPyAhUDLOwKHeibCg0QlO8DMAV6BAgEEAM&usg=AOvVaw2Ly-DLfX9tLTAr-nXgb1wZ

PIQUED by the spate of killings and arson in Plateau State, the state House of Assembly on Friday gave Governor Simon Lalong a two-week ultimatum to address the insecurity in the state. It was gathered that stakeholders and the traumatized populace are mounting a lot of pressure on the lawmakers to move against the governor over his perceived pro-Fulani stance. The legislators also asked President Muhammadu Buhari to prove to Nigerians that he is not tribalistic by condemning the serial killing of their kith and kin the same way he has condemned the recent killing of some Fulani travellers in Jos. Addressing newsmen in Jos on Friday, the chairman of the House Committee on Information, Honourable Dadun Peter Philip, said the Assembly was calling on the people to stand up and defend themselves and their communities since conventional security designs could no longer guarantee their safety. Text of the statement reads: “On behalf of the Plateau State House of Assembly, I wish to sympathise with the government and people of Plateau State on the barbaric and dastardly killings that have been taking place in different communities of Bassa, Barkin Ladi, Bokkos, Jos North, Jos South, Mangu, Riyom, University of Jos community and recently that of Yelwa Zangam. The House condemns all these killings in totality. All these killings are unacceptable and condemnable. We commiserate with the families of all those who lost their loved ones during these attacks. “We commend the youths on the Plateau for the sustained coordinated and organised campaigns against the killings and as well the courage to make it go viral by sending strong messages to the world using the dead bodies of the mayhem on the social media and the streets of Jos. The display of the corpses in the House is a sign that they recognised the authority of the House of Assembly as an institution that can speak for the people. We greatly appreciate that action. “As an assembly with people at heart, we call on Plateau State citizens to have confidence in us with renewed commitment as we have given two (2) weeks to the governor to take action on the resolutions the House has forwarded on security matters and how to restore peace. “We strongly call on Plateau people to stand up and defend themselves and their communities, as the conventional security design is no longer guaranteeing our safety as a people. “We call on the Executive Governor of Plateau State, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong, to come up with a statement defending us as a people and to bring back renewed commitment to the cause of Plateau. “We are still expecting with high hopes, the president to also come up with a statement about the killings in Yelwa Zangam just as he did in the killings of travellers along Rukuba Road and to also indicate a sign of justice or we will see him as being reflexive about the conflict in Plateau. “As an assembly committed to the yearnings and aspirations of our people, we deeply appreciate the calls made by Plateau people, both at home and in the Diaspora, for encouragement and tasking us to do the needful in order to save Plateau and its heritage. “We also wish to put on record that we stand with Plateau people in this trying moment and assure them of our genuine commitment to the cause of Plateau State. “We also call on the traditional rulers to look inwards and release the local security design to protect Plateau people as well as reinforce the vigilante, hunters and local wise men to defend our people. “As a sign of commitment to this urgent need for the people to protect themselves, the Plateau State House of Assembly has directed all local government chairmen to suspend their planned recruitment of ad hoc staff and instead recruit 200 vigilante personnel in each local government area to boost and argument local intelligence gathering. “The security operatives are called upon to fish out the perpetrators of the mayhem and be punished according to the law.” Some of the lawmakers who spoke with newsmen after the conference confirmed the pressures they were facing from their constituents who accused them of joining the governor to abandon them amid insecurity. None of them wanted to be quoted. However, one of them said the decision to commence or not to commence impeachment proceedings against the governor would depend on how he responds to the two week ultimatum the Assembly gave him. https://www.google.com/url?q=https://tribuneonlineng.com/governor-faces-impeachment-over-jos-killings/&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwjs7JihhNPyAhUJKuwKHbLgB_kQlO8DMAZ6BAgDEAc&usg=AOvVaw0en7ybPdkALyxtPsJEA4zd

While speaking with our correspondent, Rollas revealed that Dike had been living on transplanted kidney for the last 10 years. The Department of State Security Services, DSS, has denied dispersing medical doctors participating in a recruitment interview organised by Saudi Arabia officials in Sheraton Hotel, Abuja. A media report had claimed that DSS operatives stormed the hotel on Thursday morning and dispersed the doctors and journalists, who gathered at the venue. The report also alleged that a journalist with the International Centre for Investigative Reporting, Marcus Fatunde, was arrested at the venue but was later released. The recruitment interview was organised by the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Health. But the secret agency, in a statement by its Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunaya on Friday, said no operation was carried out in the hotel, adding that the report was designed to embarrass the organisation. He said: “The attention of the DSS has once again been drawn to a falsehood being circulated in the media that it dispersed doctors attending a Saudi Arabia organised job interview at the Sheraton Hotel, Abuja, yesterday 26th August, 2021.” “Though this is illogical and does not add up, sections of the media that reported it did not care to verify the news before going to print. No further evidence was also adduced to prove that the DSS carried out such an operation at the hotel. It is obvious that the news is only designed to embarrass the Organisation.” “Journalists and other media practitioners are enjoined to crosscheck their facts and ensure that they do not use their platforms to mislead the public or undermine national security.” https://www.google.com/url?q=https://m.guardian.ng/news/dss-denies-dispersing-doctors-participating-in-saudi-govt-recruitment-exercise/&sa=U&ved=2ahUKEwjJht_itNHyAhUKH-wKHVuMCHgQlO8DMA56BAgDEAs&usg=AOvVaw1ppcMmoQNpnJC52frgi2ui
