NEW ASWAMA BOSS RESUMES DUTY

-- Tasks Management and Staff of the Agency on improved productivity.

A clean and green Anambra is top priority of the Soludo administration. This was exemplified by the first official outing of Mr Governor, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo, on his epochal visit to Okpoko in Ogbaru LGA, and parts of Onitsha North and South to flag off the clean up of slums for an imminent urban regeneration.

As a follow-up to this, Mr Governor commissioned a special task force headed by the Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim. The Committee was saddled with the responsibility of sustaining the momentum and calibrating a new, effective and efficient waste management system.

As part of the reform effort in the management of waste in the State, the Governor, last week, announced the appointment of Mr. Mike Ozoemena (Nzeakonobi) as the new helmsman of the Anambra State Waste Management Agency (ASWAMA).

Until his appointment, Mr. Ozoemena was an active member of the State task force on waste management. Today, at the ASWAMA administrative office, Mr. Ozoemena resumed duty as the MD/CEO of the agency. This event was marked with a brief handover ceremony wherein the immediate past MD/CEO of ASWAMA, Mr. Amaechi Akorah, handed over the reins of leadership to Mr. Ozoemena. The new MD charged the management and workers of ASWAMA to brace up for the task ahead. In his words, "our job is simple, yet daunting. But, excuses will not be entertained as the people are impatient for a change, and this change we must provide even at the expense of our personal comfort".

The event was witnessed by some State functionaries and members of staff of ASWAMA.

Governor Soludo Set to Relocate The Popular Ogbogwu Market from Bridge-head to Oba.

Friday 17th June, 2022 has been set for the groundbreaking ceremony by Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to signpost the commencement of construction works at the new site for drug marketers in the State.

This was made known this morning by a combined delegation of stakeholders who paid a courtesy call on the Governor at the Anambra State Governor's lodge, Amawbia. Members of the delegation include, Ogbogwu Market Association, represented by their caretaker committee Chairman, Mr Chukwulota Ndubuisi; the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Anambra State, represented by Pharmacist Josephat Obasi, and Mr. Uche Eze, the Chairman of Coordinated Wholesale Centre -- a supply chain distribution framework of the pharmaceutical society of Nigeria.

Speaking on behalf of the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria, the regulatory body for all drug related activities including production and distribution, Pharmacist Fechi Njoku, bemoaned the current unregulated state of the open drug market at Bridge-head Onitsha. She noted that the council in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health had made frantic efforts in the past to no avail to ensure a better system where wholesome drugs are produced and distributed according to international best practice. She Thanked Governor Soludo for showing a strong will to bring the situation under control with the swift approval for the commencement of work at the proposed new site in Oba.

Governor Soludo assured the visitors of his resolve to transform the new Oba drug Market to a highly regulated eco-system for the sales and distribution of drugs, and to further expand it into a manufacturing hub for all kinds of safe and efficacious drugs.

The project is a Private-Public Partnership where the Government is providing land and other technical support. It is expected to be completed in next 24 months, with the first phase billed to be set in the next 8 months.

Those at the meeting include, Dr. Afam Ben Obidike, the Anambra State Commissioner for Health and Dr Godwin Nnadozie, Special Adviser to the Governor of Anambra State on Medicals and Pharmaceuticals.

“These are the other one. They are all members of unknown gunmen that did the kidnapping and these are their arms alongside with the Biafra flag, charms, pot of charm, police shoes, belt, berate.

Anambra State Govt Restores Peace Among Factions In Nkwelle Ezunaka Community, Oyi Council Area

Anambra State Government has restored peace among the warring factions in Nkwelle Ezunaka community, Oyi Council Area, after over eight years of communal dispute.

The Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Mr Collins Nwabunwanne, who brokered the peace during a reconciliatory meeting with the warring parties in his office at Government House, Awka, explained that Governor Soludo is passionate about promoting peace, development and progress in communities.

Commissioner Nwabunwanne reminded them of the need for peaceful coexistence as no meaningful development will take place in an atmosphere of bitterness and rancour.

He said the elected executive would pilot the affairs of the town for six months, that is from now till December in line with the court ruling before another election will be conducted to produce another executive and will also work with state government to produce a traditional ruler for the community.

The President-General of Nkwelle Ezunaka, Mr Leonard Areh-Onyenze, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to Governor Soludo and Commissioner Nwabunwanne, for being able to effect the reconciliation after many years of squabbles.

Some of the members of the executive present at the meeting including Chief Willie Okafor, Engr Dike Ndulu, Sir Everistus Nwachiemelu, Chief Chidozie Dibor and Chief James Odife in their separate reactions, promised that the factions will sheath their swords to pave way for a new election in December 2022, according to the dictates of Nkwelle Ezunaka constitution.

Endoscopy Unit, General Hospital Onitsha Commences Full Operations.

By Chibuzor Okoye (ABS News)

The Endoscopy Unit at the General Hospital Onitsha has commenced full operations.

Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike disclosed this when he went on inspection visit to the unit.

Endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure used to examine an individual digestive tract.

The Commissioner thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo for the current revolution going on in the State's health sector and called on Ndi Anambra and residents of the state to access the facility in the hospital.

Dr. Obidike pointed out that they are currently training health personnel on how to use and handle the machine for utmost performance and revealed that people will get the service at a very cheaper rate at all times.

PARTNERING GOVERNOR SOLUDO'S VISION FOR CLEAN ANAMBRA

( ABS Commentary Unit )

A critical survey across Anambra State shows that the state is facing serious environmental health and climatic challenges. One of the challenges facing the Anambra environment is man-made problem. Indiscriminate dumping of waste across the cities and communities in the state with the attendant problems of air pollution, infections, flooding, erosion and negative impact on the aesthetic view of the state.

People from Anambra are known for cleanliness. It is one of the core values which needs urgent revival before nature begins to take its toll on the residents of the state.

The new administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo hit the ground running by embarking on massive waste evacuation exercise at Okpoko in Onitsha and environs and is still rolling out plans to build clean, green and planned cities, communities and markets in the state.

One of the plans is the ban on open and public deposit of waste and the government's plan embark on house-to-house collection of wastes. It is also mapping out severe sanctions for those who go against the laws guiding waste disposal in Anambra State.

Residents of the state must therefore make conscious efforts to protect their environment from further degradation not just to avoid sanctions from government but because a healthy environment makes a healthy people. Government cannot do it alone. It is a collective responsibility. All concerned must pull resources and forces together in order to protect and preserve the environment. Every resident of the state must stop indiscriminate dumping of waste and as ensure that people around them follow suit. We must stop the attitude of throwing away empty cans or bottles, and wrappings from the window of vehicles. Ensure to make use of designated waste receptacles or dumpsites for waste disposals. We cannot claim to be a religious people while we live in a filthy environment, afterall, God and nature abhor uncleanliness. In the book of Exodus chapter nineteen verse ten, and several other chapters of the Bible, God gave His children charge for bodily and environmental cleanliness.

It gladdens the heart to see that some individuals, markets and communities have heeded Governor Soludo's call to embark on practical actions for cleaner, greener, planned and sustainable cities.

However, there is urgent need for every resident of the state to key into the environmental protection exercise and as well have a positive change of attitude towards the environment.

We must say no to indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the roads, streets, markets and other surroundings.

People who have no regard for their surroundings, their future is under serious threat because we have only one earth and one Anambra.

ANSMEDIA:
Thirty-two states in Nigeria, including Rivers and Kaduna, did not attract any foreign investments in the first quarter of 2022, The PUNCH has learnt.

A report by the National Bureau of Statistics shows that only Lagos, Oyo, Katsina, Anambra states, and the Federal Capital Territory attracted investment during the period.

According to the NBS’ Nigerian Capital Importation (Q1 2022), the total value of capital imported into Nigeria in the first quarter of 2022 stood at $1.6bn from $2.2bn in the preceding quarter, showing a decrease of 28.09 per cent.

When compared to the corresponding quarter of 2021, capital importation decreased by 17.46 per cent from $1.9bn.

The largest amount of capital importation by type was received through portfolio investment, which accounted for 60.87 per cent ($957.58m). This was followed by Other Investment with 29.28 per cent ($460.59m) while Foreign Direct Investment accounted for 9.85 per cent ($154.97m) of total capital imported in Q1 2022.

By destination of investment, Lagos State remained the top destination in Q1 with $1.1bn accounting for 71.16 per cent of total capital investment into Nigeria. This was followed by investment into Abuja (FCT), valued at $446.8m(28.40 per cent).

Anambra Oyo and Katsina states followed, with each raking in $4.1m, $2m and $700,000, respectively.

On the other hand, Abia, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Gombe, Imo, Jigawa, Kaduna and Kebbi states failed to attract any foreign investments during the period under review.

Others are Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Kano, Niger, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe and Zamfara states.

Categorisation of total capital investment by bank shows that Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria ranked highest in Q1 with $543.20m (34.53 per cent). This was followed by Citi Bank Nigeria Limited with $439.03m(27.91 per cent) and Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc with $251.52 (15.99 per cent).

Speaking in an exclusive interview with The PUNCH, an ECOWAS Common Investment Market consultant, Professor Jonathan Aremu, said, “It’s simple. It’s because they don’t have the attracting factors. The factors that attract foreign investment are not available in those 31 states. One thing about investment is that it is crisis shy. Investment doesn’t go to places where there are crisis. Why? Because investors want stability and predictability of their investments, particularly, having returns on their investments.

“When an economy is witnessing what we are witnessing currently, despite the investment potentials of that kind of economy, investors will wait and see whether the factors that can guarantee predictable and sustainable investments will finally be available.”

He added that the twin factors of a good investment climate as well as a good perception of that climate would have to be present for investors to develop the confidence to bring investments into the country.

Similarly, the Deputy-President of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Gabriel Idahosa, cited factors such as insecurity and the economic crisis experienced in Nigeria in recent years as major reasons why investors may not consider Nigeria the best possible destination.

Idahosa said, “We know what to do. We simply have refused to do it. We know that we should have put in place a state police system around this country maybe five or 10 years back, before Boko Haram became a monster. If we had state police in Borno State when Boko Haram was a very small, tiny group of ruffians creating local problems, perhaps we never would have heard of Boko Haram.

“Generally, the police system should be taken out of the Exclusive list; so we can have state police, and municipal police, just like we have in other federations. The New York Police Department has a budget that is probably higher than the Nigerian Police. Same thing with the Los Angeles Police Department. We know what to do, it’s just the political confidence to do it.”
