Wow, that reminds me.

@ larride, i learnt that Buhari ordered everyone including vigilante security groups to return their firearms, and none must carry guns while securing the neighbourhoods. This is exposing the citizens to easy attacks by robbers.

Like gensteejay recounted, i almost lost an uncle last december too. Robbers came, the security guards saw them but could only alert the people while they also ran for cover.
The robbers raided the area, stabbed and shot some. Police came 30mins after they left.

Don't you think this is a stupid order from the government? Now citizens are defenceless and police will not come to their rescue, giving no fuel, flat tyre and other annoying excuses . These are the things that get many angry about some decisions/policies of this government.
I’m just hearing about this from you. Buhari did not make that pronounciation yesterday, let me check if he just made some adjustment to it today.

I thought you said Nigeria won't go on lockdown?

Buhari should adopt the Balsonaro approach.

Nigeria standing still will claim many more lives than the 1 in 500 or 1 in 1000 this will kill. We have a young population, and Europe's mortality rate will not transpire in Naija. We also face devastating illnesses with high mortality rates that we live with as a matter of course.
For now the lockdown is affecting just 3 states: Lagos, Ogun and FCT.

Though Kaduna State govt has locked down the state, it’s yet to be seen how the FG will proceed in the coming days.

South must do everything possible to reduce their influx in the region.

More reason i will always clamour for every child to get at least a secondary school education, so that it won't be easy for political/religion leaders to brainwash them.

Billions are wasted annually to fight the menace, caused by those that stupidly believe education is haram (Boko haram). While important areas in the countries are gasping for funds, not forthcoming.

How do you easily convince these northern illiterates, that double as religion fanatics, that they should not pray because of a serious communicable disease ravaging the world? They won't be on the same page with you, may see it as a clampdown on their faith and they will go all out.
The first problem - Northern elite.

Illiteracy and religion are the opium they use to control them. The more uneducated they are, they more they are able to use them for whatever they want.

These current northern elites are all doing eye service and playing to the gallery whenever these issues are raised. Hopefully the new educated one coming up will be different.

No one can liberate the north except the northern elites.

Many small businesses depend on big corporations, They service them. Most of what we call employment is either in producing a product or servicing those producing the product. If Toyota opens a factory in a city, you know how many people not working with Toyota that will benefit? One big Toyota plant can be the bedrock that support 1,000 small businesses and the income of 10million people. The trickle-down effect of having

mention a small business e.g Recharge card sellers, how will they survive if the Nigerian Telecom industry collapse?

NCAA is offering world-class training for free to athletes in exchange for giving them exposure, taking all their potential income and endorsements.

The other option is for the athlete to go out there, train himself, expose himself and pocket the money
Just like some companies will hire you, sign a contract to work several years and pay your student loan or send you to school and pay your tuition with an agreement that you work with them for several years

At the end of the day someone still has to pay for the cost of training to be an athlete, porn star or accountant.
NCAA still pays the athletes under them salary based on the contract they sign. Lots of companies do send their employees to school also while footing their bills.

The question then is, why can’t government do the same? This model has been tested all over the world and it works, why can’t the US govt. does so also?

That is because the economy of the nation is tied to businesses. If these corporations go down, How will those dependent of them feed themselves, You havent answered that? If govt is giving the people bailouts without reviving the companies, how long will they continue to do that for?

MTN is milking Nigerians, but shebi we still have NITEL, can you shred the MTN Glo and airtel sim and just go back to using NITEL or Mtel?

It is often postulated that small scale businesses have major impact on a country economy, so how come they don’t get bail out but instead big corporations does? If Govt can’t cut me check when I run into crisis, what justification does it have to cut it to but corporaiton when we are both running business? In a capitalist market, there will always be an alternative. If they run themselves aground, why should the govt give them money when someone else can buy them over when they declare bankruptcy? When those small businesses close up, who is going to cut them check? Who’s going to take care of those the small business employ to run their businesses? Why should one be important than the job? Shouldn’t same rule apply to them all?

I’m not advocating for govt to run businesses so I don’t understand where your MTN/NITEL analogy is coming from.

Currently, about 35% of Americans over 25yrs have a college degree, Let's assume all of them even have student loans, If govt should be giving free education to 35% of the population, what should be done for the 65% who are not going to college and want to learn a trade start a business or just do anything they want? Should govt take their tax to fund those elites who want to go to college?
What happened to 19-24yrs who are currently in college or have just finished college?

College education is not mandatory but it should be made at least 90% free for those that wants to go, not burden them with debt for the rest of their life’s.

Going by your logic, during the global crisis in 2008, how come only big corporation get bail out and other small businesses are left to either survive or close up? Of the businesses in America, big corporations represent 15% or even lesser, why do they deserve bail out when they run into crisis and the other 85% businesses doesn’t?

Lets talk about all these big corporations you keep hammering about, These are the same big corporations that bring out innovations, One of those bailed out were Detroit auto industry, If they die, will govt manufacture cars? If they die, the services they produce what will happen to them?

And importantly, the employees who get their paychecks from them what will happen to them? Will govt pay them for life? if govt will, from which income?

These corporations do more for the population than any govt will ever do. Think of what MTN has done for the population in their first 10yrs and compare to what NITEL was doing. So if Telecoms company in Nigeria for example have a problem should they allow them to die? and if they die, who will suffer more?

US is struggling with Universal Health care, The countries with Universal healthcare how are they faring? The Universal Healthcare in Italy how is it helping? Do you know how many Canadians come to America for medical procedures just because of the wait times. No system is perfect in the world

College education is not required to be successful, many people have made it in life without college education, its only the elites that are college-educated.

If govt is paying for your education, Should govt tell you the course to study? cos how can govt pay tuition and you are going to study dance and romance?. If you want to have the liberty to do what you want, then you have to pay for it
Dayo, Dayo. Trying to be clever by half again.

If Detroit Auto industry is left to die, another auto industry will replace it. If they cannot handle their crisis, why should govt. bail them out when the same govt will not bail out Citizens when crisis hit? It is not the first time companies are going bankrupt and moribund, why is the govt. not giving them bail out fund? Are they not employing people also? Are there no people drawing pay check from them? When they declare bankrupt, is the govt paying them?

In the Covid-19 Relief Act currently in Congress, Trump and his Republicans want to give $500b to big corporations, who is going to take care of the small businesses that employ people in their community? If the big corporations deserve bail out because of the employees under them, why not the other small businesses?

Are you talking about the same MTN? The same one that’s milking Nigerians daily?

No system is better but do a survey in America today and almost 80% of the population will rather take the UK and Italy health system compared to the kind of health system US run. While other countries were running test free of charge, US was charging $3000 for test before the govt had to step in.

Going back tonight Education, your analogy doesn’t make sense. Porn is not a career that needs Education while sports in lots of cases has to do with talent and minimum education required. Even at that, there are a lot of sponsored sport education. While should I finish tertiary education lot students loans when most of students around the world are graduating debt free? How can there be a system that gives free tertiary education to citizens and you are advocating for one that burdens graduates with student loans that they have to service for the most of their life’s? An education is still an investment in yourself, Getting my almost free education in OAU was why I spent over 7yrs studying a 5yr course while some of my mates that dropped out after year 2 went to Babcock and still graduated before me. That was why many of my slightly older colleagues could not get jobs because many multinationals insisted on age 25 cut off in employment.

One of my classmates who left Ife during our 1yr strike after year 3, got to UK, he became a CCIE like 6yrs later. He ditched everything about that free Nigerian education and he made it big

All these millionaires and billionaires in the same US who are paying my salary and 10 times richer than me all went to these same schools got these same student loans and made it, and have left me behind. That is my mates in same America have over a million in retirement many assets because he started his career off at 22yrs despite the loans and preparing to retire at 45yrs while my free education still have to come to his country hustle and playing catch up and dem no born me well to think of retiring then unless I win a lottery

The free education that was teaching me Fortran 77 in the year 2000, while my student loan gathering American friend was already coding in C.

In technical fields, most Nigerian education do not give you what you need to compete in the current world

If you study Computer Engineering or Computer Science in a Nigerian school and no outside certification or self-improvement how do you compete with your fee-paying colleagues who were taught with up to date technology in the west

Most Nigerians who made it abroad, had to recalibrate and study all over.

I studied chemical engineering, All the Navier stokes and Fourier series we were cramming in Ife, My friend that went to Georgia Tech studied the same course never wasted much time cramming all those useless formulas because all those things were just no longer relevant again

But I should be glad I got a free but almost worthless education, that has little relevance in todays world

These are all good points. However no one is really debating the fact that there should be better fiscal responsibility in terms of bailouts and tax relief for the elite, or in terms of greater social responsibility in return from the elite. The problem people had with the initial poster was his claim that billionaires should not exist or that the existence of a billionaire is a pointer to a failed system.

Socialism as an experiment failed in the Soviet Union, China, and in Cuba. It has become abundantly clear that capitalism with a little mix of social justice is the bedrock of a progressive society.
Expecting more social responsibility from billionaires is reasonable, claiming that their very existence is incongruous with a successful society is not.

I totally accept social capitalism is the way forward, however countries that have practiced variants of this like the Scandinavian countries and even the UK under Tony Blair's Third Way, like Nihilist alluded to, still produced billionaires. Any reasonable taxation system even with ultra-progressive taxation will still produce billionaires.
Don’t mind Dayo, I have absolutely no problem with billionaires. My problem is actually with Govt.

There has to be a way to protect the vulnerable. Health care shouldn’t be left in the hands of capitalist. There’s no reason why the US cannot have “free” universal health care system being funded tax.

Why should a fresh graduate be burden with huge student loans to be serviced immediately he get a job and once he loses a job the student loan keeps increasing. Why can’t America have a tertiary education that is being funded by taxpayers? Ask Oga Dayo how much he paid yearly during his time at OAU compared to the amount tertiary students are paying yearly in America. It is this same subsidized certificate from OAU that gave Oga Dayo an head start when he traveled out. Today Uncle Dayo is preaching tertiary education is an investment in yourself yada yada yo

Why should big corporation get tax breaks when they donate some few millions? What then is their CSR? The only time I believe corporations should get tax breaks is when they build any infrastructure. Just like how Dangote Group is currently constructing the badagry road.

Why can’t govt. ensure that these corporations pay their workers living wage? Paid sick leave, bonuses and other consemurate allowances? They will still remain billionaires but some of their wealth would have trickled down to a lot of people.

Why? WHy should the creator of jobs be taxed heavily? Let me bring it down to you, You make 5M next thing you likely will do is enjoy small and look for how to turn the 5m into 50M, thereby employing more people and spreading the money around, If Lagos state now says ok you make 5M, govt takes 4M, So how will it benefit you or the rest of the populace

Let me use a hypothetical example of say Govt bails out Amazon, Do you think without the bailout Bezos will ever starve? What of the millions of workers who benefit from him directly or indirectly? If you run down billionaires and owners of business, Will the govt create those jobs?

Education is an investment in your life. You will get the most benefit for what you invest in youself, So why should the govt give you this education free. In US, its free till secondary school, AFter sec school, you decide you want to be an Accountant and I decide I want to be a boxer, why should govt subside your life dreams by giving you free tuition and not pay for the cost of my training and gym to become a boxer?, Why should part of my taxes be taken to sponsor you in achieving your dreams. If Janet decides to be a porn star or a model should govt also finance her training too? grin grin

How much can govt give the people and for how long? The greatest help you can do for an able bodied man is to get him back to work quickly where he can earn money and feed himself and his family.

If comanies are helped back on their feet, they can hire people who will in turn feed themselves and grow the economy around them
When Detroit auto industry went down, Obama bailed them out, the companies came back to life and hired people back, the people hired were able to make purchases thus local businesses also came back.

If govt has been handing out money to those people since 2008, How long do you think able-bodied men and women will continue to depend on govt
You are trying to be clever by half Oga Dayo.

If big corporation will enjoy bail out by Govt funded by taxpayer money whenever crisis hit, then those big corporation can be taxed heavily when they are back on their feet. Yes they are being taxed quite high currently but considering the fact that they even enjoy tax breaks which in most times usually cover their tax liabilities which shouldn’t be so.

I see you stylishly left out the Universal Health Care which the US is struggling with. Do you know how many American dies annually because they cannot afford premium to get universal health care in America? Why should govt. leave her citizens at the mercy of these big pharmaceuticals?

Janet acting porn doesn’t need a degree neither does a football needs a degree to become one. It’s a bad example to give when we are discussing the effect of student loans on life in America. Most jobs requires a degree these days and the burden of getting one is not being made easier. If Govt can give bailout to big corporations when in crisis, why can’t they also give bail out to individuals when in crisis?

Let me use a hypothetical example of say Govt bails out Amazon, Do you think without the bailout Bezos will ever starve? What of the millions of workers who benefit from him directly or indirectly?

Unless we should be operating an economy where govt hands out money to everyone, And if that is the case, where will the govt get the money to hand out from?
Billionaire’s should not enjoy tax breaks and they should be taxed heavily.

Let’s take the US of A as a prime example here;
With the kind of capitalism that the US runs, why exactly should govt give out bail out funds to these big corporations.

The reason why there’s no Universal Health Care system in the US compared to the rest of the advanced world is because of large pharmaceutical companies who has your politicians in their pockets? Compare how much a major surgery or treatment cost in the US compared to other developed nations?

Do you know the % of Americans that are burdened with College Debt? Most of the developed nations have free tertiary education but in the Capitalist US of A, young people run into debt to get a degree and use most of their adult life repaying these debts. Even as worse as Nigeria is, tertiary education is heavily subsidized by the govt.

When recession hit and these people are out of a job, who’s going to bail them out? Will govt give them lump sum of money so they stay afloat? Are these big companies not underpaying their employees? Who’s going to help them pay their student debt that keeps accumulating when they are out of a job and can’t service it?

Social Capitalism is the way to go.
