Nothing destructive about that, in my opinion, of course. If we want to save Literature, we have to weed out mediocrity. No good critic has the patience for bad writing. Quote me anywhere.
A lot of writers here would get better through loving encouragement. They don't claim to be the best; they just want to get better. There's a better way to criticise. If you think there's no good writer in this section, then leave. You don't need to complain about the heat, just get out of the kitchen. If you can't encourage them, don't kill their passions. The world can be a better place, it's left for the living to make it so.

Bless you, sir.

I have been snooping around Nairaland literature section for almost five years now and when you have been around for that long, you are bound to have come across myriads of writers with different substance and styles. As far as I am concerned, one man sticks out of the writing pack like the proverbial sore thumb, he is no one else but the eminent author of the Brand of Cain, Mr Larry Sun.

His brilliant writing style, excellent diction and sagaciously plotted stories easily makes him one of the finest writers to have ever graced this section and leads one to wonder if by any chance he was born with a silver pen in his hand.

Asides being a most splendid wordsmith, he has been, to me, a teacher and mentor. I was opportuned to have a first contact (thinking of an alien? Well, the dude does write like he is out of this planet) with him in 2013 when he opened a thread titled "Nairaland Detection Club". That thread inspired me to put pen to paper again after five long years in the literary wilderness.

When I got started with my debut story - that is after checking out his stories and being blown away by the quality of his works - his was the first comment and as time rolled by, his apt corrections and continued presence on my thread have led me to be a better writer than I would have been if I never knew him.

God bless whoever or whatever pointed you in the way of writing sir and God bless you for blessing this section with such wonderful stories.

* * *

Now, let me do some er casting;

1. I have been following Larrysun religiously for years now and only once have I seen his picture. Just so you know, he is a dark complexioned, handsome man.

2. He has some scar somewhere around his mid-section. I can't recollect specifically if it is on his stomach or thigh (this was revealed in one of the entries in his diary).

3. His teeth are not exactly white (another revelation from his diary). This is an attribute we share.

4. He has a crater-deep crush on Ishilove and has probably never done anything about it.

5. Let the casting continue.
Wooooooooow! VanTee20! Oh my goodness! Where have you been? I've so missed you! One of the finest wines.

I don't have much to say other than this: Ever since I joined NL I've been gifted and blessed with the opportuinities to read amazing novels by proficient writers, who are good at what they have love for.
Mariannaede your novels are captivating and I admire the passion in your work. God Bless you.

I am a new member of this blog, but with the short time I've spent in it, LARRYSUN has resurrect that passion lost but not forgotten in me to write again. How I admire the simplicity and might of his work makes me wish he is my brother then I can get enough time to be tutored into achieving great heights in literature. I admire you bro, yes I said it (no gay 4 sure) lol.

Your works are beauty, a cool satisfying drink that refreshes a shrinking thirsty mind like mine. God's strenght abides in you

Larry is a mentor I will never, ever draw a blank about. Have you heard of that fairy tale where a prince picks up a commoner and elevates his status, even to that of another prince? It exists. With me. This man, Larrysun, took a very unusual interest in me when my writing skill was very much green. He brought me up single-handedly. He let me drink from the red of his small skull and also gave me sizeable bites of the antelope his arrows had killed. He is the only man I have to thank for my works today. What else can be said about him?

His stories are perfectly woven, and there was a time I aimed to forge an identity out of his fort. But then I realized that the man was far gone, far ahead and that it would never matter how fast my legs pedalled. That made me define a different but almost similar path to his. His grammatical adroitness is perfect and he is just the one who can, lickety-split, render your heart to the cold marrow merely by a twist. His narrative dexterity is second only to his, and the flowery wrap of his pen would make the greatest saga ever liveth.
Lol! You, my dear brother, flatter me. We see a lot of ourselves in each other. That is why, perhaps, I don't read your works just for entertainment alone, but also for knowledge. I learn a lot from you too, you know? You're a thoroubred. You're a literary stallion. You also drink from the fountain with your hand, not with your mouth.

From time, I have known you as one who doesn't assemble with the elites in kissing the Blarney Stone. And it is a blessing undisguised that you're not blessed heretofore with the gift of the gab. It is left for the innocent readers to decide between the monotonous roar of the lion or the limited gamut of the birds. The mockingbird of a Pernassian ornithology has a very sweet song of its own, if only hunters could listen.

God bless you, my friend.

Literature Crush: Ishilove, of course. I've been in love with her since 2009.

Well, what can I say? I speak from the shadows. I prefer the fortress of closed doors. When I go out, I glide along with the winds...like a ghost without destination. I write to make an impact, to inspire. Writing is a legacy; I don't want to be a sparrow whose fall would go unnoticed. I can be vividly imaginative, or imaginatively vivid, as the case may be. I aspire to be the best at what I do, and writing is what I do. I make no claims to creating literature, but I aspire for intelligent entertainment. I am, the first and last, a die-hard mahoganic impressionist; I don't hack down a big calibre tree with a small calibre hatchet.

Bless you, Divepen1, for the innovation. Let's meet at the other side. I owe you a billion apologies.

Cheers,

LSD.

Larry that was long but interesting to read, though I find it hard to decipher the writer's reason for posting his/her thought on your thread but it quite opens the mind to seeing the need to perfect the art of writing and publishing.

Look beyond the critism and pick the points stated. Personally, I find no reason to criticize your beautiful work and find his opinion harsh but raw, I advice that a mature approach to his points is applied.

You are good, but u can do better and will do better.
Anyways GOODWORK AND GOODMORNING.
This isn't my thread. The OP didn't do his research well. When he comes across great works on this section, I'm sure he'll be humbled. I sincerely hope he would have the fortitude to return here and apologise for what he typed; perhaps he has come across the good ones but he's too blinded by pride to acknowledge them, or the obviously burning sensation to throw some invectives has robbed him of reason.

THT80:
I love reading. I enjoy reading all kinds of written material. I read non fiction books, fictional novels, column articles, blog posts, short stories and poetry.
I am not usually selective about the genre or category of whatever written material I stumble upon, but what I am selective about however, is the quality of writing. I enjoy reading because it provides me the opportunity to feast at the table of knowledge prepared by the author and to consume from his indispensable plate of information. But just like most book lovers, I enjoy reading because of the entertainment I derive from it.
Inspite of these reasons, there is also another reason why I read; I read to expose myself to brilliant, colourful writing.

There are various forms by which beauty expresses itself, but the form of which I have recently began to acknowledge and enjoy, is the form of writing.
For me, nothing is more beautiful and titilating to my senses as a well written sentence - A sentence so well crafted that it not only conveys the message of the writer with profound clarity, but it also engages and activates my other senses to the point where words are transformed to images and images to sounds and sounds to palpable sensations. I have acquired a rare gift of associating words with imagery. When I read a particular sentence, images that denote that sentence begin to automatically arise in my mind and I am uncannily able to describe the form of that image, and the degree of complexity, colourfulness and elegance of the image directly corresponds to the quality of the written sentence.

It's really sad to say that of the little time I have spent perusing this section with the intention of finding something worthy of me devoting my time to read, I have found nothing of the sort. I mean no disrespect to the writers here, but please if you must engage in the timeless art of writing, make sure you are skilled enough to write. I haven't been able to make it past a single paragraph of any story I have clicked on, despite reading over sixty stories on this board. Majority of the stories I read were poorly worded and riddled with bad grammer. The writers who managed to utilize proper grammar in their first paragraphs were just terribly uncreative with words and the expositions and descriptions were like something you'd read from the transcript of an uneducated 8 year old narrating an ordeal. The imagery I got from the ones I managed to read past a sentence were dull, ugly, uninspiring frames and shapes that evoked disgust and almost made me gag as they arose in my mind.

If we must adopt a language as our common language, I expect that we should excel at that language, in every area, whether it's in speaking or in writing. There shouldn't be a noticeable difference between us and the manufacturers of the language or any other speaking group in terms of quality and proficiency. So if we must write in English, then we must excel in it. We shouldn't be mediocre. We shouldn't display any form of ineptitude in any area of writing. We should strive to be masters of the art. We shouldn't dabble into writing because we feel everyone is doing it, or because we experienced a transcendental moment where we received word from our divine creator that writing was our calling. Even if we believe writing is our calling, we should at least learn the art before deciding to try our hands at it, and the best way to learn how to write is to read the writing of exceptionally good writers. And not reading with the intention of just entertaining ourselves, but reading to emulate the quality of their writing. And even when we feel we have learned enough, we should first compare our written work with the writing of professionals before we decide to potentially embarrass ourselves by uploading them on a public forum for all to see and read.

I really hope my message has been received.
Criticism comes either constructively or destructively; and the above, brother, is destructive criticism. That's not fair.
