If ibos were happy with the union, why want out?

Everytime I hear of the Oba of Lagos threatening the Igbo, I just laugh in merriment. He did it in front of the Eze Igbos in Lagos, and none of them could stage a walkout, or express their displeasure with his comments, or even defend their people publicly. O di egwu! Igbos living in Lagos were told on Sunday to vote for the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Akinwumi Ambode, or else they will die in the lagoon.
A visibly angry Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, in an unconcealed threat, stated that he was not ready to beg the Igbos, but if they repeated what they did on March 28 when they voted for the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), President Goodluck Jonathan, then they should be ready for the consequences....
“On Saturday, if anyone of you, I swear in the name of God, goes against my wish that Ambode will be the next governor of Lagos State, the person is going to die inside this water.
“I’m not ready to beg you. Nobody knew how I picked Ambode. Jimi (Agbaje) is my blood relation and I told him that he cannot be governor in Lagos for now. The future belongs to God. I am not begging anybody, but what you people cannot do in Onitsha, Aba or anywhere, don’t do it here.
“If you do what I want, Lagos will continue to be prosperous for you. If you go against my wish, you will perish in the water.”
The monarch said anybody against Ambode did not wish the state well, adding, “I am for the progress, growth and development of Lagos. Ambode is highly cerebral, he’s a symbol and he is going to deliver the message which I, the Oba of Lagos, have said. And he will govern the state for another eight years.
“He is going on a mission and God will give him the wisdom and knowledge to fulfill that mission. Almost a year ago, I declared that Ambode will be the next governor of Lagos and it will not change.
“From time immemorial, the previous occupiers of this house will say what they wanted after consultations with other people. And this hasn’t changed and it will not change at this time,” he said.
In a veiled reference to one of Jonathan’s predecessors, Akiolu stated that the crisis Nigeria was facing was not caused by the Jonathan administration but by another person he refused to name.
Continuing with his tirade, he said: “If not for the appeal from Asiwaju (Bola Tinubu) and my highly respected maternal father, the Awujale of Ijebu-Ode, all what is happening today is not the cause of the present government. The man who caused everything knows himself.”
In his response, the Eze-Ndigbo of Amuwo-Oriade, Dr. Gordian Dimojiaku, promised Akiolu that the Igbos in the state would support Ambode.
“The mistake of last Saturday was caused by everybody, not only the Igbos. It is not only the Igbos that were responsible for the votes. But we have learnt our lesson. Saturday’s election is going to be a different thing and Ambode is going to win.
“Everybody knows that when you fail the first time, you cannot afford to fail again. We are going to tell our people that Ezes from the 20 local governments and 37 local council development areas are here and that we have sworn with the Oba that we are going to make sure that Ambode wins next Saturday’s election,” he said. http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/vote-for-ambode-or-perish-inside-the-lagoon-oba-akiolu-tells-igbos/206050/ |

OPCNAIRALAND: To the rhesus comparing regions, Southeast is the least valued region anywhere in Nigeria.
Here is how to compare development in real economic terms. The Nigerian currency, Naira, is a common denominator and so holds value whether you are in Enugu or Ibadan. But we know, based on migration and investment numbers that Ibos are the ones migrating and investing in other regions because the quality of social living in these other regions is superior to that obtainable in Iboland. Therefore assuming we have individual and different currency based on the distinct economies of each region....so that Yorubaland has its own currency, lets call it Alare pound, Ibo has its own currency, lets call it Biafran pound, .....it will take a million Biafran pound to buy one Alare pound at exchange.
What this means is that an Ibo in Yorubaland is far much valuable than an Ibo in alaibo by a million. This is so because security, commodity market, social justice, liberty, entertainment....and everything else instituted in West by Yorubas is a million times better when scaled against same criterias in East. This explains the migration and also the mindset to accept being a lower class untitled citizens in Yorubaland than the privilege of pedigree status back home in Alaibo.
This is a true measure of class in Nigeria. Guy, the correct phrase is Ala'Igbo, not Alaibo. Secondly, you failed to talk about the erosion ravaging the SE, that is making the NL pro-Biafra internet warriors and their ilk, flee their land to other parts of Nigeria. How come you missed out on that bit? |

Not even Ohanaeze or Indiigbo are for secession from Nigeria and you are here battering your computer keyboard proffering silliness as a way, but only to doom! To be taken serious, you are your lackeys or kanu's underlings, should declare war against Nigeria instead of building sandcastle and making goat noise! Guy, they don't even need to declare war! So all the sabre-rattling should stop! There has been too much bloodshed in this country. Just let them recall all the Senators, House of Reps members, businessmen etc, from other parts of Nigeria straight back to the South-East. Then let them follow the process of applying to be recognised as a separate country. (e.g. either through the UN, World Court etc.) Afterall, Czechoslovakia separated in a self-determined split into what is today known as the Czech Republic and Slovakia, without any bloodshed! All the Biafra proponents should find out how they did it and take their lessons from there! Forget those big dreams they are dreaming for Biafra!! Hehehehe ... elevators in 4-storey buildings and wide triple carriage lanes! I laugh in Greek! Assuming they had turned each of their states in the South-East into an Eldorado, I would have had faith in their pipe dreams. As if it is not the same people that cannot build sound structural buildings in the South-East, that sell counterfeit materials and pocket half of the monthly allocations, that would inhabit Biafra?? CSTR2: This is your definition of ''hate''. For a country where thousands of lives are lost due to religious and ethnic reasons, ''verbal antagonising of some so-called'' elders is what you prioritise as hate? What do you mean by igbos don't address fulani on our thread? There are so many threads where extremist fulani elements are called out only to have yoruba louts soil it in their blind defence of the fulani which is probably due to the recent political outcome in aso-rock. I can't count the number of times igbo people are branded anti-north by the yorubas on nairaland because we choose to say the truth. Get the fucck out of my face with your moronnic argument. Btw, what has 13% derivation got to do with the fact that it is daylight robbery? What has Nigeria done to deserve 87%? In what rational society should the SE get far less ? When you don't get enough, how then do you solve these areas of needs? Guy, get the myopic blinkers off your eyes, biko nu! You have chosen to repeat the same error by deliberating blaming the Yoruba for your woes. Yet, I told you in my previous post that there are over 150 ethnic groups in Nigeria, so stop classifying everyone as Yoruba. And out of all the points i made, it was only the one about Igbo showing disrespect to the elders of other tribes that caught your eye? Chukwu biko! O di egwu! You claim the 'yorubas carry out a blind defence of the Hausa-Fulani on so many threads where extremist fulani elements are called out', and I had to laugh when I read this statement. Haba!! Must you lie in order to get your points across??! How is this issue of 'extremist Fulani elements,' the business of the Yoruba or any other ethnic group?? In fact, why are you even reporting the Yoruba people to me?? Why not carry your animosity against the Hausa-Fulani to www.gamji.com, or some other northern-dominated website?? Why unleash your anger on NL? I have been on NL much longer than you have, and what I have noticed is that most of your Igbo brethren cannot make their points in a courteous manner, without lacing it with some insults, hate or venom. Secondly, they are quick to twist the facts, and misinterprete it to buttress whatever strange view they are trying to propagate. So what so-called truth are you referring to?? The one laced with propaganda, that your brethren persistently recycle before everyone else? I have often wondered why the Igbo are so quick to vent their anger on the Yoruba, for failing to support them in one endeavour or the other. Please, tell the rest of us from other parts of Nigeria, when and where the Yoruba signed a blood oath with the Igbo, to provide them with blind support for ALL their activities, or to always speak out in their defence irrespective of any course of action, they decide to undertake. Can anyone please enlighten me on this?? Or is there something you Igbo and Yoruba folks are not telling us?? Finally, after going back and forth on any issue...they always find a way to turn round to blame the Yoruba or their forbears, for some sin or act of omission or commission, or some woe they claim was inflicted on them in the past, even if that offence was committed by a totally different party. Of course, by doing so they make it the business of the Yoruba, who then turn round to retaliate in kind. And those of us from other ethnic groups will either watch in amusement, or lend our voices to the debate, depending on how strongly we feel about the issue. Finally, concerning the 13% derivation, what are your Senators and House of Reps members doing about it?? GEJ was president for how many years?? Why didn't your brothers or SE governors, lobby the federal government or enact laws to get the situation changed?? Does NL look like a microcosm of a law-making assembly to you?? Chai! |

xtrorse: [s]A lie may travel for a thousand miles, but it takes just one step of truth to catch up with it.
It's only the weak and leeches that bash other people who in no way have got nothing to do with the mass murder, destruction of means of livelihood, oppression and injustice in the land.
laudate, here and now can you post such evidence where prominent Igbo leaders have used propaganda and hate-speeches to cause anarchy in the country? Can you substantiate with facts and figures, in clear terms, how Igbos constitute nuisance in any community?
Can you post evidence of Radio Biafra call for unprovoked attacks or genocide on anyone, here and now?
In the 90s, the NADECO's unlicensed and inciting Radio Kudirat was hitting the airwaves, did any of your elites condemn it?
Before the 2015 general elections, did you condemn the highly inciting Radio Chanji in the North?
Ever since you were born, have you seen or heard anywhere Igbos are on rampage, killing people and destroying means of livelihoods for no just cause?
How many of your elites dare challenge the Hausa-Fulani-Kanuris or Yorubas for their unjust ways? How many of you dare counter the numerous killings and destruction of lives and properties that have been occurring for many decades in the North unabated?
You merely turn blind eyes to the wickedness in the country because your kinsmen are rarely affected. But you're quick to point accusing fingers on the Igbos who have been far from power for 50 years.
The Hausa-Fulani-Kanuri people have over the century propagated despicable, hate speeches in their mosques and still execute the unconscionable, cold-hearted waste of human lives and reckless destruction of means of livelihoods in the North and Middle-belt. And they now have the presidency while the backstabbing Yorubas vice-presidency! Such a misnomer can only happen in the jungle!
A number of Yorubas even go to the extent of carrying wicked lies about how Hausa-Fulani-Kanuri people have been peace-loving and accommodative; that it's the Igbos that always provoke their hosts in the North warranting the pogrom and other heinous crimes against the Igbos. Yet in the same North and the Middle-belt the Christian minorities and other Southerners are maltreated, relegated to the background and even killed.
You say that Igbos are arrogant, and that they don't respect their hosts while you subtly proclaim that the Hausa-Fulanis are peace-loving and accommodative. You don’t like Igbos but you still fought and killed them to be in this fraudulent union with verm1ns, where parasitic ingrates are favoured by the injustice, inequity and lopsided arrangement in the polity. And your people even had the effrontery to castigate Igbos for seeking a self-determination!
Mister, it's wrong for you to make frivolous statements because you do not like the Igbo man. Though you may be bitter and angry for the unequal exploits and audacity of the Igbos, it's absolute wicked to spread baseless propaganda!
Many of you hold the view that Igbos should be grateful for being allowed to live in their part of the country, in the same 'One Nigeria'! You say Igbos disrespect and denigrate their host when Igbos choose to exercise their franchise right. And you don't seem to see anything wrong in Oba Akiolu's threat to drown Igbos in the Lagos lagoon if they fail to vote for his anointed candidate! The same threat was backed by many Yorubas including Dr Ariyo in the US who even called for genocide.
But here you are, pointing accusing fingers on the Igbos for daring to stand against the injustice in the land and seeking self-determination. And some of you mischievously term it 'chest beating' or 'disrespect'. And if Igbos do not stand and speak for themselves, people like you will still find a way of accusing them of not doing enough to market themselves; that nobody is going to do it for them. Igbos are wiser!
There's oil in Anambra, Abia, Enugu and Imo. The whole of Enugu and Anambra States are sitting on Gas deposits and gas has more value than oil; Coal at Enugu, Lime stone for cement in Abakaliki; rice in Ebonyi State, Abia State - highest producer of cocoa; West Africa's largest market at Onitsha, Anambra; big markets at Aba, Abia state and Nnewi, Anambra. Even without reliance on crude oil the Igbos have excelled and are more than ever before capable of doing more exploits and competing with the World powers!
I don't blame you for not being objective and sincere! I blame this forced union under which you and your folks hide to propagate falsehoods and had the audacity to do so.
IGBOS HATE NOBODY EXCEPT YOU ARE A SWORN ENEMY TO TRUTH, JUSTICE AND EQUITY. At the 2015 presidential election Igbos only exercised their franchise right just like other tribes.
If Igbos are the promoters of hate in Nigeria, can anyone tell us any instance where Igbos go about causing mayhem, killing and destroying means of livelihoods for no just cause?
It's only mischievous bigots in the society that turn blind eye to the evil and injustice, and permit the atrocities to flourish in the land because they gain from the lopsided arrangement in the polity.
GENESIS OF HATRED IN NIGERIA
1* “We do not want our Southern neighbours to interfere in our development. We have never associated ourselves with the activities of these people. We do not know them, we do not recognize them, and we share no responsibility in their actions. We shall demand our rights when the time is ripe. If the British quit Nigeria now at this stage, the Northern people would continue their uninterrupted conquest to the sea”. - Sir Tafawa Balewa (1947)
2* “We the people of the North will continue our stated intention to conquer the South and to dip the Koran in the Atlantic ocean after the British leave our shores.” - Sir Ahmadu Bello (1957)
3* "The new nation called Nigeria should be an estate of our great grand father, Othman Danfodio. We must ruthlessly prevent a change of power. We must use minorities in the North as willing tools and South as conquered territories and never allow them to rule over us or have control over their future" - Sir Ahmadu Bello, October 12, 1960
Ahmadu Bello, arrogantly uttered the aforementioned statement in a multicultural and multi-religious country and got away with it, and many bigots still hold him in high esteem and even shove it down the throats of other people.
5* ...sometime in 2010, when upon the demise of President Umaru Y'Ardua, indications emerged that his erstwhile deputy, President Goodluck Jonathan, may contest the 2011 presidential election, a prominent chieftain of this same ACF, Lawal Kaita, who was a former Governor of old Kaduna S tate, threatened that the North would make Nigeria ungovernable, should Jonathan or anyone from the South win the 2011 presidential election, claiming that such would amount to denying the North it's birthright of ruling Nigeria.
6* It is in the same North barbaric statements like this were uttered in 2011: ”BABOON AND DOG WILL BE SOAKED IN BLOOD”. And what was the outcome - carnage and murder of many Southerners and Christians in the North, including many Youth Corps members when Buhari lost the 2011 presidential election?
7* That true to that threat, upon the victory of Jonathan from the 2011 presidential election, massive violence was unleashed from the North by a group which called itself Boko Haram and which repeatedly took responsibility for unending mayhem which began with the killing of Youth Corp members who worked ad-hoc for INEC in that election.
8* As the barbaric killings and destructions reigned, especially with the attack by Boko Haram on the UN Building and Force Headquarters in Abuja, the Lower Niger Congress publicly posited that the nexus between the aforementioned threat by ACF's, Lawal Kaita and the Boko Haram's bloody campaigns summarily destroyed any prospects for keeping the Nigeria Union.
9* "It was, therefore, no surprise that in October 2013, following the bold announcement by President Jonathan, presenting the sudden prospect of revisiting the master-servant constitutional arrangements of Nigeria infuriated the warmongering born-to-rule Caliphate whose cause was championed by the same ACF, and who, supported by their allies from the renegade wing of the Yoruba Southwest, launched a vicious, frontal attack on the initiative, teaming on the floor of the Conference into a majority, and driving the Conference into its first major decision, i.e. NOT TO DISCUSS THE TERMS OF NIGERIA'S UNITY. The rest of the Conference was a jamboree that provided a luxurious platform for the North/SW Alliance, parading itself as a new political party named APC, to fine-tune their violent March to the do-or-die 2015 general elections."[/s] The day you become objective and sincere, someone would give you a befitting response. The facts are there for all to see. Google is your friend. We all know you suffer from a mental problem, so no one would waste their precious time exchanging words with you! So have the floor to yourself to continue launching your calumny of propaganda! You are an expert in substituting propaganda and falsehood for facts, in your posts. The word ' balance' means nothing to you. Apart from that, your hate-filled responses and venomous invectives on every thread you visit, only proves the point that you and your brethren are utterly filled with hate! |

CSTR2: Culture of hate? Hate must mean something else in your brown roof enclaves. Igbos don't slaughter their fellow Nigerians. They are scattered throughout the country in the name of one-nigeria. Abia and imo contribute its crude oil resources to a parasitic union, despite the fact that the south east gets by far the least allocation that imo state alone can generate from crude in a month. The fulani and by extension the north have massacred thousands of innocent Nigerians in the name of religion and politics. A simple caricature of muhammed somewhere in europe would trigger a senseless murder of innocent Nigerians in the north. The fulani cattle herders are currently on a conquest of some sorts slaughtering all in their wake.. But of course, that is not the definition of hate according to our ''sophisticated'' yoruba people. It is the igbo man minding his own business and looking to create his own nation that is hateful. Hehehe! Your response has just proven the non-Igbo, right! For your information, there are over 150 other ethnic groups in Nigeria, and not all of us are Yoruba, so remove that ethnic lens from your eye so you can see clearly. So why are you not facing the Fulani on your threads? Why direct your venom at other ethnic groups?? As for your convoluted theory that the Igbo mind their business, nah... you are not telling the truth! Evidence abounds of your people's propensity to look for trouble, by verbally antagonising indigenes and residents of areas where they sojourn, using propaganda and hate-speeches. Evidence abounds of the way they heap insults on the revered elders of those regions, where they dwell. And since no one has a monopoly on rancour and hate... guess what? Those people just turn round to dish it right back! NB: Talking about the revenue accruing to Imo state from crude oil, please guy go and educate yourself. There is something called derivation and it is 13%. States like Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa have far more more crude being drilled in their swamps and off-shore areas, than imo and Abia have from their on-shore wells. The quantity of offshore oil available , exceeds what can be obtained on-shore and that is why revenue from such areas differ. It is not only the amount of revenue which comes in that matters, but how wisely it is used and deployed to areas of need. |

See as someone is claiming that "Igbo are chart-toppers and alleging that Yorubas are bitter and angry at the success of the Igbos." I have hundreds of Yoruba and Igbo friends. The plain truth is that most Yoruba people cannot be bothered about the success of any other ethnic group, as long as you do not disrespect them, or rub their faces in the mud. Many of them just want to get on with their lives. For every area boy or miscreant in lagos, there is an equivalent cadre among the Bakassi boys or miscreants at Onitsha head bridge, market or other places in the South-East. For every failed alliance among the Yoruba, there are several equal number of betrayals among the Igbo. Tell me, what caused the fight between Cosmas Maduka of Coscharis and Ifeanyi Uba of Capital Oil? Who swindled whom? And for every successful Igbo person in a particular field or industry, the Yoruba folks and other ethnic groups, also have an equally successful individual from their clan, to show for it. Do you know why I often turn round to set these Igbo tribalists straight? Because I have quite a large number of Igbo people among my extended family, who are wonderful, de-tribalised, accommodating, enlightened people of integrity. None of them share this well of hatred, that runs through the veins of the Biafran proponents on this forum. Anyone visiting NL, will think all Igbo people think in the same way as these Biafran internet hate peddlers, when in fact there are many out there who do not subscribe to their warped campaign of hostility against other ethnic groups!! I really don't give a hoot about Biafra, but there is no need to pull down other ethnic groups or vilify them, in order to make your desired 'country' a reality. Scotland held a referendum, a while ago. Did they launch verbal and written attacks against the Welsh or English people, before they went ahead to do so? Did they embark on a calumny of hate against their neighbours? No! So why must these pro-Biafra chaps do so in order to get their way? They preach hatred everywhere they go, and deploy propaganda as a weapon of division. Maka gini??! Such tactics will not win them any support for their cause. VirginFinder: xtrorse the wailing bastard, when will ibos produce Nigeria's president? Ignore that neurotic Ekwensu. Ndị àkàloògòlì jì yà aka. For every offence or perpetrator listed in his long myopic hate-filled epistle, there is an ever present counterpart from his own area, that has done far worse. Honestly, I give you Yoruba people credit for tolerating this kind of character, for so long. May his kind never emanate from among those I know. Tufiakwa! He even keeps quoting the same Fulani and Northern elements whose folks massacred tons of his people. I am sure those departed folks would be cringing in their graves, at the fact that he has turned into the mouthpiece of elements whose forbears dispatched their souls to the great beyond. May God have mercy on those poor departed souls! Chukwu nùḷụ onu ụmù ̣gị! |

ayobabas: Revisionist history will bring no succour to slaughtered biafra or ran-away ojukwu, no matter how much you temper with it! No mind am. Even Madiebo admitted that France and Portugal gave them arms. There is documentary evidence from folks at the war front on the Biafra side, who admitted weapons were supplied by foreign countries. Now someone who was NOT even born during the war, and never smelt Biafra, is coming to say they were low-grade weapons, or that arms were not supplied by x or y countries. Talk about having a skewed sense of history... |

Please leave that person, whose half-baked submissions and shallow assertions are laughable. Someone will jump in now, with another even more shallow, clueless comment and she will latch on to it like the gospel truth, instead of doing her own research. abikubu: You can find any excuses under the sun for losing the war but biafra had backers too: France, South Africa, Portugal etc. Try anything this time, and you will see a fate worse than those pictures... More modern weapons will be tested on you. Well, it is on record that the following countries supported Biafra during the civil war: France, Portugal, Czechoslovakia, South Africa, Spain, Israel etc along with a few other African countries. France and Israel were reported to have provided weapons to Biafra, while Portugal allowed them to use of the island of Sao Tome for relief flights and offered them arms. China, also denounced Nigeria and offered support to Biafra, though the nature of that support was not highlighted. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigerian_Civil_War ; http://www./1968_biafra%20_report_by_american_jewish_congress.htm BIAFRA MILITARY
On the Biafran side, preparation for war was put into high gear as soon as the troops of non - Eastern origin withdrew from Enugu in August of 1966. Thousands of people poured in for recruitment. Training was embarked upon both for officers and soldiers who were mainly lecturers and university students. Before the outbreak of hostility, the Eastern Region had no sufficient arms since all the soldiers who returned to the region did so without their arms while the soldiers who were withdrawn from the East departed with their weapons. What was left of the Nigerian Army at Enugu barracks amounted to about 240 soldiers, the majority of them technicians and tradesmen and not all the soldiers had weapons. However at the outbreak of the war, the Eastern Region had succeeded in securing arms and ammunition from France, Spain and Portugal. Madiebo remarked, "When more weapons were received in May 1967, a decision was taken to form two new battalions to be called the 9th and 14th Battalions." (2:100)
POLITICAL / DIPLOMATIC
The Biafrans knew that the odds against them was immense and that their survival depended on the amount of external support they were able to muster. The Biafrans, through many of their people abroad, mounted a very strong campaign and propaganda for the recognition of Biafra by the international community and for the purchase of arms and equipment. This powerful propaganda paid off by her recognition by countries like, Tanzania, Zambia, Gabon, Ivory Coast, Haiti, covert support by France and double dealing by countries like West Germany, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Sweden, Republic of Dahomey, Sierra Leone and secret importation of arms and ammunition into the region. http://www.africamasterweb.com/BiafranWarCauses.html |

Those telling the story of MKO Abiola are bad students of history. It was Prof. Humphrey Nwosu the head of the electoral body at that time, that declined to announce the results of the election, even though he knew that MKO Abiola won that election, fair and square. Nwosu's excuse was that a group known as Association for Better Nigeria (ABN), bent on scuttling the electoral process, led and effectively coordinated by Senator Arthur Nzeribe, had gone to court to get an injunction to stop the release of the results! Imagine! So Nwosu could not muster the required courage to do the right thing. ..The June 12 Presidential election still remains a watershed in the annals of Nigerian politics. For the first time ever since independence, the electorate ignored the tribal and religious fault lines and voted massively for a Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket. And almost 22 years after, it is still adjudged to be the most credible, freest and fairest election ever witnessed in the history of this country. It restored the confidence of Nigerians in ballot boxes.
But regrettably, the eight-year transition programme mid-wived by the Gen Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida military administration which culminated in the victory of the Presidential candidate of the SDP, the late Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, MKO, and his running mate, Baba Gana Kingibe, ended up in fiasco.
Abiola had slugged it out with a Kano-born politician and candidate of the NRC, Alhaji Bashir Tofa, in a keenly contested election and recorded a resounding victory across the states of the federation. But last minute to the announcement of the result by the National Electoral Commission (NECO) headed by Prof Humphrey Nwosu, the military annulled the election and truncated the Third Republic. That set the stage for the political imbroglio that almost marred the very existence of the nation.
The role of the military
As some people say, the annulled June 12 presidential election symbolizes the second struggle of the Nigerian people against internal colonialism represented by the military. More intriguingly, the two registered political parties which had some semblance of left and right ideological persuasions were the creations of the military. While the progressives allied with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the conservative elements gravitated towards the National Republican Convention (NRC). But unknown to the populace, the military which set up the transition programme was itself a party in the contention for power with the political class. Thus, it set a bobby trap in the guise of Association for Better Nigeria (ABN), a campaign group bent on scuttling the electoral process. The group was led and effectively coordinated by Senator Arthur Nzeribe.
After a robust campaign by candidates of the two political parties, the chairman of the electoral body, Nwosu and his team announced June 12, 1993 as the date for the presidential election, which was to bring to an end over a decade of uninterrupted military rule.
In readiness for the task, according to reports, Nwosu led a team of NEC officials to brief the nation’s military rulers on Thursday, June 10, 1993 on the commission’s plans to hold the election on June 12. In his meeting with the leadership of the Armed Forces Ruling Council consisting of Babangida, the president; vice president, Augustus Aikhomu and the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Sani Abacha, Nwosu announced the commission’s readiness to conduct the election, which was to crown the administration’s transition to civil rule programme.
At the meeting, a section of the military believed to be reluctant to leave the scene was said to have expressed reservation on the conduct of the election hinging their position on a needless legal tussle between the commission and a group of military apologists bent on scuttling the election - The ABN. A night before the election day, ABN secured an injunction from Abuja High Court headed by Justice Bassey Ikpeme restraining the commission from conducting the election . http://sunnewsonline.com/new/reminiscence-the-june-12-1993-presidential-election/ |

ayobabas: Which cave did you dust yourself off from? You live in the past.
On 12 January 1970 Biafran Chief of Army Staff Major General Phillip Effiong surrendered to the Nigerian government, stating Biafra's physical and psychological surrender:
"We are firm, we are loyal Nigerian citizens and accept the authority of the Federal Military Government. We accept the existing administrative and political structure of the federation of Nigeria. The Republic of Biafra hereby ceases to exist" Hehehe...!! God bless the late Obong (Major General) Philip Asuquo Efiong, Akankang Ibiono Ibom!! May his tribe increase! May his memory remain blessed for ever! They don't make brave men like him, anymore. He did the right thing, that needed to be done at that time and prevented further carnage from taking place, unlike that chap who took off to Ivory Coast. |
