Saao: is not face and face me sir. Keffi road is obalende? Bros, Keffi road runs through Obalende area. It starts from the junction of Awolowo Road and terminates at the back gate of old Dodan barracks after Obalende market. Go and check! Eleshin Street is just off Keffi Road, just before the entrance to Obalende Market. At the back end, it is close to St. Gregory's College gate which marks the beginning of the Obalende axis. On that same axis you will find, Odo Street, Ajeniya, Toyan St etc. |

Please read this article on taxation in Nigeria The FIRS chairman, speaking on how to boost non-oil revenue said that it would crack down on tax evaders by denying them access to banking facilities for individuals and companies that failed to join its register. FIRS boss told journalists in a news briefing in Lagos that there were more than 450,000 companies in the country, but only about 125,000 pay any form of tax.
Ogungbesan said it was difficult to track the financial activities of those who did not pay taxes, adding that most their firms were not active. “We are collaborating with the CBN to enforce compulsory registration with the tax authorities by companies and individuals before they can access their bank accounts,” said Ogungbesan.
Tax identification numbers were introduced for corporate bank accounts in 2012 but some firms whose accounts pre-date the system are currently not obliged to have one. “There is a need to review our tax laws,” said Ogungbesan, adding they were not stringent enough to deter evaders. Tax evasion can be punished with up to five years in prison....
..“The same law which said you must commence business has not provided the infrastructure upon which you can rest. If a company is registered and stays for years without doing business and becomes operational ten to fifteen years later, it will be required to pay return charge fee of N25, 000 for each of the year it did not operate as penalty. This kind of law does not promote investment.
“There is the need to intervene, and amend the complex laws that inhibit interest in promoting investment in the country. The thinking is that all those in the informal sector are not paying taxes, it is only those in formal employment that are paying. Can this be true?
When the local government comes to the market to allocate stores, the woman in the store pays N2, 000 per month. Is that not tax she is paying? All those sundry levies being collected by states, they have more than sixty levies on these businesses what do you call that? They are taxation in one form or another.
“It is true they are not paying adequate taxes, some body that should be paying N60,000 is giving you N2, 500. The limitation and the challenges we have is that we do not know who these tax payers are and where they are operating from. The fact is that the Federal Inland Revenue Service which every one is quick to refer to is only administering the Federal Capital Territory, not the entire country and so that makes it difficult for us.
“When we compute tax-to-GDP ratio, every now and then you hear Nigeria is doing only about 7.5 per cent, whereas other countries in Africa are reporting about 19 per cent. “Yes they are partially correct but they forget that the various levies at the local and state levels, including the personal income taxation administered by state governments are not captured.
If you include them in the tax figure, Nigeria will be doing close to 17.5 per cent. It is still not enough because the bench mark is 20-22 per cent. We are not assessing ourselves correctly. “The quick win is, why not increase the rate of VAT from 5-10 per cent? Can we do it now? If you see how far we have gone this year in revenue generation you will see that VAT would have increased by July, that is the target they gave us but we have not been able to do it.

The government is not really thinking out of the box in its' bid to enhance tax collection and administration. For example, why can't the govt issue an entrepreneur with a TIN number at the point where he registers his business with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC)? Once you get your RC No, you should be able to get your TIN No the same day. It boasts of having over 3,000 workers nationwide. How has it deployed them? Tax officials like to harrass and initimidate people left, right and centre with wrongly computed tax figures or assessments. A neighbour of mine with a small provisions shop on our street was recently asked to pay over =N=800,000 naira as annual corporate tax, simply because the business name she used was a limited liability company. This is a woman whose profit is barely up to 37,000 naira in a month. Out of her earnings, she pays the wages of one salesgirl, pays local govt signboard tax, pays council levies, pays for petrol to power her genset etc. Most of the time her shop is closed, whenever she has to go outside town to see her children in boarding school. All attempts to make the tax officials see reason fell on deaf ears. They sealed the shop oh! Only God knows how they arrived at that tax assessment figure! |

SirShymexx: Oh, isn't Nigeria the same country with the damning stats the most first kids aren't always biologically their dads'? Now, add serial owanbe-ism to it - and you would know that their step-dad might be their real dad, while FFK has been the surrogate dad for a long time. And why did she decide to post this tripe on cyberspace, just because the man told her to do DNA test for the kids? Is that too much to ask for?
We know how owanbe women operate out here once they going to owanbe parties everywhere - they start sha.gging around like dogs. Some Uncle that I know just lost his owanbe-ism, and the scandalous heifer has been jumping from one man to the other since then. Classic owanbe trait right there.
The only way she can justify the fact is to do the DNA test - crying around and spamming everywhere with junk epistles won't solve the problem. Whatever she wrote up there about the step-dad is for the birds - women do that all the time. They always put the new man on the block on a pedestal, to smear the old one. That's the oldest trick in the book.
All the diversion tactics about: he smokes crack; he fvcked his mum; he's crazy blah blah blah...who cares? She saw the crazy heifer before she got married to him. So why's she crying everywhere now? You are jumping to conclusions, quoting 'stats' that cannot be verified by anybody, anywhere. Taking a DNA test, is a personal decision. From your response, it appears someone has foisted another man's kids on you before somewhere, or has compared you to the new man in their lives, at some point in time. The fact that someone may have done so, is not enough reason to tar everyone else with the same brush. Not everybody is an owambe fan. Take a chill pill. |

Like I said, in Yoruba culture, sometimes the dad can say such if he's in a bad mood. It's sort of more common with men who are womanizers though. They do it to show their displeasure and also to discipline the children or their mum.
The one whose paternity he was bringing into question, is actually the one who resembles him the most, I wasted my time looking up her pictures, na the female face of FFK.
The write up is probably meant for his current "lady", and possibly written by a rival of hers, maybe someone who wants her position.

Major-General Robert Adeyinka Adebayo, Military Governor of old Western Region 1966-197
Now we see why some people didn't come to a negotiation table with papers, no home work whatsoever, like Gowon said, they just came to discuss, probably for the sake of discussion.
In a table for negotiation, they are still making their intentions for use of force known, a kind of subtle threat maybe. Guy, you need to do your research instead of relying on what someone told you, or the myths the Biafran propaganda machinery churned out to your forbears. Adebayo's warning was NOT made at the negotiating table. It was made on the 30th of May 1967 after Ojukwu announced his plans to secede and declared the state of Biafra. It was a warning to both Ojukwu and the Nigerians. It was one of the reasons why Gowon initially opted for a 'Police Action', instead of full scale attack to counter Ojukwu's actions. |

pazienza: The regional members felt that all the decrees passed since January 15, 1966, and which detracted from previous powers and positions of regional governments, should be repealed if mutual confidence is to be restored.
By this part of agreement, the regions should run like they have been ran before the first coup.
In other words, the regional control of regional resources, and 50-50 sharing formula between the regions and the Center returns.
The only difference being that the Supreme council now serves as the center.
Of course, Gowon didn't understand the implication of that part of the deal, right? He had inferior intellectual and mental capacity, yet he went to a negotiation table without a paper!
Lol! Have you read the text and composition of Decree 8 of 1967? It more or less turned Nigeria into a confederation, making the regional governors powerful and the centre (SMC) quite weak. Regional control of resources as agreed by the SMC was also provided for, in that decree. That decree gave Ojukwu most of his demands and could have averted the civil war if he had agreed to it. Ojukwu: Hero or Villain? | By Max Siollun on December 16, 2007
The federal government attempted to implement the Aburi agreement in diluted form by enacting a modified Constitution (Suspension and Modification) Decree which turned Nigeria into a de facto confederation. Ojukwu declined to accept the initial draft and insisted on a full and complete implementation of the accords reached at Aburi.
Nonetheless as the weaker party he could still have showed greater pragmatism to spare further suffering for his people. At this point Ojukwu’s decision making must be questioned. Ojukwu would have saved many lives had he shown a greater degree of flexibility by accepting the Decree as it gave him 90% of what he wanted. In the “winner takes all” mentality that is so symptomatic of Nigerian politics, Ojukwu unrealistically held out for 100% of his demands and in the end, received 0%.
His intransigence placed him and his people in a worse position than they started in. Rather than turning Nigeria into a confederation (which is what Decree 8 did), Ojukwu ’s intransigence gave the federal government an opportunity to overrun the Eastern Region, carve the country into several states and concentrate massive powers in the central government. Forty years later many Nigerians now call for the restructuring of Nigeria, and for devolution of power to its regions. Ojukwu had a golden opportunity to achieve this over 40 years ago but squandered it. Had he shown some patience he may have achieved his objectives – albeit at a later date. The old adage is that “the best comes to those who wait.”
Ojukwu could have taken a leaf from the book of another infant country named Israel. For several decades Jews fought to be given their own state in what was then British Mandate Palestine. In 1947, they were granted their state but only on half the land that they wanted. Realizing that it is best to accept what is achievable today, rather than risk holding out for 100% and getting nothing, Israel’s first leader David Ben-Gurion accepted a state but cleverly did not enunciate the borders of this state – this leaving the door open to agitate for more land at a later date. Today the “green line” borders of Israel encompass more land than it originally had at independence. https://maxsiollun./tag/ojukwu/ |

Biafra was the Eastern people's choice, people asked Ojukwu to declare for secession after Ojukwu had exhausted all peaceful options,to state that Ojukwu forced Ndiigbo into war is not only a historical revision, but an insult to the Igbo spirit, which will never bend to the whims and caprices of one man, so much that, we evolved a democratic system thousands of years before the Greeks knew the meaning of that.
Maybe tomorrow, history revisionists like you will come and tell us that Kanu Nnamdi forced Ndiigbo to war, when in actual sense, Ndiigbo is using Kanu Nnamdi to achieve our freedom, hence why he controls fellowership today, all over Igboland. You have NOT read the book, "yet you can smell lies?" Hehehe... wonders will never cease. What are you? Psychic? Or twisted?? Choose one. Thank God Uwechue was Igbo. Otherwise you would have dismissed him as part of the Arewa-Odua evil doers, fighting to exterminate your people. You do suffer from a persecution complex, judging by the way you describe other ethnic groups in Nigeria. Next you said, "Biafra was the people's choice." No one is arguing with that. But as a leader Ojukwu should have warned his people about the costs of going to war, the losses that would ensue and the hardship, pain and suffering that emanates from embarking on such a course of action. He should have told them that their proposed Biafra lacked adequate ammunition to protect them and that getting food would be difficult, if they decided to go to war. Instead, he chose to lead them to war. No problem. But why do the Igbo keep blaming other ethnic groups for all they lost in the war, since they were the ones that voluntarily embarked on the war, in the first place? At least on the Nigerian side, Adebayo the military governor of the Western region warned not just his own people, but also Ojukwu and his men on the devastating consequences that were likely to occur. "I need not tell you what horror, what devastation and what extreme human suffering will attend the use of force. When it is all over and the smoke and dust have lifted, and the dead are buried, we shall find, as other people have found, that it has all been futile, entirely futile, in solving the problems we set out to solve." pazienza: Anybody who was present at the Aburi meetburi meeting or has read the minutes, the communiqués, statements, and verbatim reports would be surprised that a person who calls himself a head of state could so deliberately mislead accredited representatives of foreign governments by saying that the implementation of each item of the conclusions required prior detailed examination by the administrative and professional experts in the various fields. The conclusions in Aburi were no proposals but decisions taken by the highest authority in the land. What happened in fact was that specific matters, namely, the decrees and sections of decrees to be repealed, the mechanics of army reorganization, and the question of rehabilitation of refugees, were referred to experts. The meeting of the financial experts to consider the question of rehabilitation of displaced persons has not been held because the Ministry of Finance does not think that such that such a meeting would serve any useful purpose. The army experts met and reached agreements, but these were rejected. Lieutenant-Colonel Yakubu Gowon told the Heads of Missions that the agreement about returning the regions to the positions before January 17 also meant in effect that the federal government in Lagos would continue to carry on its functions as before. He failed to inform the world that the decisions taken at Aburi, the federal government meant no more than the Supreme Military Council. No one of course who knows the sort of advice Lieutenant-Colonel Gowon is receiving in Lagos would be surprised by this suppression and distortion of the truth. The actual Aburi decisions read as follows: Members agree that the legislative and executive authority of the Federal Military Government should remain in the Supreme Military Council, to which any decision affecting the whole country shall be referred for determination provided that where it is possible for a meeting to be held the matter requiring determination must be referred to military governors for their comment and concurrence. Specifically, the council agreed that appointments to senior ranks in the police, diplomatic, and consular services as well as appointment to superscale posts in the federal civil service and the equivalent posts in the statutory corporation must be approved by the Supreme Military Council.
You know nothing if you say there was decentralization of power.
The meat of contention between Gowon and Ojukwu was decentralization of power, in this case, the power resting on the supreme military council, and all decisions made to be subjected under the military council, with Gowon serving as a figure head of that council, a commander in chief like Ojukwu suggested.
On the basis of this, Gowon had no right to create new states, give decree 8, and other things without the sitting of the military supreme council that Ojukwu should be part of.
This was the meat of the negotiation, everything else was anchored on it, and this was exactly the part Gowon reneged on! Ehn... why do you persist in citing other people's comments without including the sources or the links to such comments?? Don't allow anyone to accuse you of plagiarism oh! Ojukwu ignored Decree 8 which would have also given him most of what he wanted, and his subsequent actions forced Gowon's hand which led to the creation of states. You keep saying Gowon had no rights to do this or that. This was a military regime, so what rights are you referring to? Oh, Gowon had no right to issue a decree, but Ojukwu had rights to unilaterally declare secession and seize properties that jointly belonged to the entire country, abi? If Ojukwu believed in the Aburi accord, how come he decided to corner the oil assets meant for the whole country, simply because they were in the East, without informing the SMC or regional governments in other parts of the country, when it was agreed at Aburi that this would be the path through which major decisions would be taken?? How come he seized planes belonging to the Nigeria Airways alongside coaches, land and property of the Nigeria Railways which was the joint property of the entire country, simply because they were located within his regional borders in the East, without consulting governors of the other regions or the Supreme Military Council (SMC) as stipulated in the accord?? Anyway, Ojukwu misinformed Nigerians about Aburi according to Gowon. My only grouse with Gowon was the fact that he did not make this remark when Ojukwu was alive. I would have like to see Ojukwu's reaction. Nigeria’s wartime leader, Yakubu Gowon, a retired general, has accused Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, who led eastern Nigeria in an unsuccessful secession bid in 1967, of misrepresenting the Aburi Accord to Nigerians. The accord was reached at a meeting held between January 4-5, 1967, in Aburi, a Ghanaian town, between delegates of the federal military government and the now defunct eastern region as part of efforts to prevent the looming civil war in the aftermath of the 1966 military coups. Gowon said this while marking his remarks at the launch of a book, “The people s choice” written by Rev. Fr. Charles Imohkai.
He said: “I have seen that you (Imokhai) have gone back in history in your research when Ojukwu and myself had the Aburi Accord. “I was fascinated by that because I can assure you that that meeting was to break the ice and for all of us, the military leaders at the time, be allowed to be able to agree to be discussing our problems in Nigeria and to solve them."
“What happened to us at Aburi was that I couldn’t make it down (to Nigeria) because I was unfortunately down with a fever. “Ojukwu got back (before me) and made a statement and that wasn’t what we discussed and that was the beginning of the misunderstanding. “Since you presented that we had a meeting, I thought I should make that comment and to correct that.”

Speaking as a guest speaker at the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Universirty, (COOU) pre-convocation lecture to herald the 6th Convocation of the university , Gowon said that Ojukwu’s stubbornness which led him to hold a state broadcast contrary to the agreement in the Aburi accord and also declaring that the accord was for a con-federal government was the reason for the war.
He said, “The accord was meant to enable parties involved break the ice and meet as officers and gentlemen to discuss and solve our problem and preferable in our homeland but Ojukwu insisted on a foreign land.
“We went there with no preposition paper, but to meet and discuss, but Ojukwu came with a prepared paper. On return from Ghana it was agreed that I will make the first broadcast and the regional heads will make theirs, but I was down with malaria when I came back and Ojukwu went on air to say we agreed to a confederation which I had strongly objected.
“This was why we made Decree eight, which Ojukwu rejected. We made the decree and were ready to implement it to the letter because we had given Ojukwu all that he wanted. I got the secretary to the government and Some senior civil servant to review the accord and we came up with the decree I had mentioned. So who ever said the accord failed because of me is not saying the truth, and if there had been no succession by Ojukwu, there would be no civil war.
“I have read several accounts with some amusing me. One of the most misunderstood is that which pertain to the Aburi accord and failure to stop the civil war. Ojukwu had already taken some anti government stand including the hijacking of Nigeria Airways plane and annexation of branches of CBN, Post Offices and cornering of revenue to the new state, and all these meant succession which led to the war.” Gowon said.
He insisted that even in the outbreak of hostilities, he never referred to themselves as enemies, but truly enough because they were rebelling against the Federal government there had to be trouble. http://www.odogwublog.com/2015/03/blame-ojukwu-for-nigerias-civil-war.html |
