Ekykool: The war of succession from lduu Kingdom was initiated by the Oba of Benin known in lgbo historical literature as Agha lduu na Oba. (war of the lduu and Oba). It was a protracted war that touched most lgbo areas. It was intensified when the Benins acquired arms from the Portuguese. Then followed the war of secession of lgala initiated by the Atta. General Ogbe the son of Ajide attacked him at ldah, and was supported by General Udenze who controlled the Anam riverine area. Onoja Nwoboli left Aguleri and joined the lgalas because he was one of the remnants of the lgala descendants still at their Aguleri ancestral home.
Disturbances General Onoja was stopped at Ogurugu from pushing Southward by General Enewelue who founded the Anyamelum area and part of Nsukka districts. But some remnant of lgala at Aguleri loyal to Atta created disturbances at their Aguleri ancestral home which made a section of Okpuno Nri, to move in a hysteria of haste to the present Imo State where they settled as Ngwas, a name reflecting the nature of the hurry (ngwa ngwa) with which they fled. Okpuno Nris were made up of Okpu-enu, Okpuana and Aro. From the Okpuno dynasty came Disi Nri whose descendants founded Abacha named after their leader, Ikendu Abacheleku, in the present Idemili Local Government Area. There the principal village is Umudisi. Their ancestral home is Umudisi village at Ikenga Aguleri. Of the Okpuno elements comprising Okpuenu, Okpuana and Aro, the Okpuana people during the lgala disturbances left in a hurry hence their present settlement is known as Okpuala Ngwa. In remembrance of their ancestral structure and traditions during the Annual get-together of the Ngwas of Okpuala, they usually went on a pilgrimage to Okpuno Ngwa. please stop confusing okpuno/okporlo with okpuala because they are two different things eg Okporlo/Okpuno is referring to a specific house while Okpuala is referring to a specific area/ land as abound of the earth goddess. |

Those people were 100% Yoruba people. In those days, the Benin Kings ruled over a vast part of Southern Nigeria, down to Lagos, PLUS part of present day Cameroon and Benin Republic. However the Benin Kings NEVER suppressed the people culturally, even the slaves of Igbo, Igala, Yoruba, Dahomies etc origins were allowed to be.
Therefore when freedom was enacted, and Benin power receded, the smaller groups gradually mixed with others and developed a new culture/languages from their origin and neighbors. Also the British colonialists used IGBO Language which also affected those people to gradually shelve their links to Old Benin Kingdom.
You talked about Opobo: Their language is NOT 100% Igbo as you speak in SE today. Even these Olukun mi people still speak Yoruba language as well. you mean from Igbo to Efik Ibibio then to Cameroon where all slave but it can be the other way as Igbos ruling the Binis. |

Among the Agbaja Igbos they dont speak exactly the same igbo language, the Isu part cant be all true base on the story of the historical character know as Agbaja, i think is the other way Agbaja to be an ancestor of Isu people inwhich the Isu of today speaks difrently some speak a mixture of urata and what is obtainable in Ezinaihite and Ngwa. |

Culture › Re: Nsibidi: The Original Nigerian Writing Script by letu(m): 7:43am On Nov 23, 2014 |
christopher123: The Ekpe is a men’s society found in Abiriba, Aro-chukwu, Ohafia and many other Bende communities in Igbo land, it is a variation of the important Egbo Ejagham ( Ekoi) in the Upper Cross-River as well as the Efik Ekpe Society of Calabar. Egbo means leopard in Ejagham, while Ekpe is also the Efik/Ibibio word for the powerful creature (leopard) which is the symbol of the organisation. It is pertinent to note that Agu is the name of the leopard in Igbo, therefore it is clear that the Cross-River Igbos borrowed the Efik/Ibibio word.
In Aro-chukwu and Bende, the Ekpe society was the main legislative and judicial force in community government in the days of old. The striking, symbol-laden fabric of stich and dyed indigo and white (Ukara) is the Ekpe cloth in which the esoteric “language” of Nsibidi is embodied. Strong creatures of the forest, are important symbols of the Ukara cloth and this symbolizes the powerful authority of the Ekpe society.
Nsibidi is an ancient system of graphic communication dating back to at least AD 170. It has a variety of different characters and is indigenous to areas of Southeastern Nigeria and Southwestern Cameroon in the Cross River region, some of the major towns and cities that use Nsibidi are Abiriba, Arochukwu, Calabar, Ikom , Ohafia and other smaller towns within the Ejagham/Ekoi , Efik, Ibibio and Igbo speaking nationalities, it was also taken to Cuba and the Americas via the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. The Nsibidi name changed among the different groups, for example among the Igbo it is generally known as Nsibiri while in Cuba it is called Anaforuana.
Nsibidi is aesthetically compelling, encoded and does not correspond to any spoken language. It is a graphic script whose symbols refer to abstract concepts, actions and whose use facilitates communication among peoples speaking different languages. It comprises of hundreds of symbols that can be drawn in the air (as gestures, on the ground, on skin (as tattoos), on houses, on art forms, such as masks and textiles (Ukara). The early European missionaries and writers were able to record about 200 of these Nsibidi characters.
The Ekpe entourage comprises of the knit-bodied maskers “the runners” who are said to be the servants or slaves of Ekpe from the spirit world, when the masquerade is dancing it continuously sends signals and messages (Nsibidi) which only the initiated can understand. Each movement of the masquerade tells a story. In the ancient times the runners carried out regulatory functions in the name of presiding Ekpe spirit. The Ekpe spirit is housed within the Ukara- dressed “stationary masker” Uluo Ekpe (the house of Ekpe) from which the mysterious voice of Ekpe is heard during the funeral celebrations of its members.
The Ekpe Abiriba was brought from the Ena clan in the upper Cross-River during migration, hence in one of their songs, they say “Ekpe Ya Nko”, Nko being one of the homes of Abiriba Ena. To confirm the authenticity of the origin of the Abiriba Kingdom, the Ekpe Abiriba added a replica of a canoe and paddle to the Ekpe entourage indicating the crossing of the river, when the replica canoe is in motion it is referred to as Ubom Marima, the good boat.
The exhibition of the Ekpe society entourage is quite spectacular and it is with pleasure that we share with you pictures of the Ekpe entourage, which again would be on display during the Igwa Mang festivities in Abiriba this December. the influence of Igbo's of Eboyi state, Abia state and other's in Cross river state and Akwaibom state by the Ekio's in cross river state, through their Ekpe association is a vice versa thing because the Igbo's of Abia, Eboyi did influence them(Akwa-Cross group) because the pri colonia Akwaibom,Cross river worship the Igbo goddes know as Ala the earth goddes. |

[quoteauthor=MissMeiya post=28105150]Inspired by the Hausa Ajami vs. Latin alphabet thread. Someone mentioned Nsibidi and it reminded me of this project... From Wikipedia: "Nsibidi (also known as nsibiri, nchibiddi or nchibiddy) is a system of symbols indigenous to what is now southeastern Nigeria that is apparently an ideographic script, though there have been suggestions that it includes logographic elements. The symbols are at least several centuries old: Early forms appeared on excavated pottery as well as what are most likely ceramic stools and headrests from the Calabar region, with a range of dates from 400 to 1400 CE. Aspects of colonisation such as Western education and Christian doctrine drastically reduced the number of nsibidi-literate people, leaving members of the Ekpe leopard secret society (also known as Ngbe or Egbo), as some of the last literate in the symbols. Nsibidi was and is still a means of transmitting Ekpe symbolism. Nsibidi was transported to Cuba and Haiti via the Atlantic slave trade, where it developed into the anaforuana and veve symbols, respectively." From the Nsibiri Project: "The mission of the Nsibiri Project ('nsibiri' is the Igbo variation of nsibidi) is to record and appropriate nsibidi ideographic symbols for a writing system to be used by the Igbo language and Cross River languages such as Efik, Ibibio and Ejagham. This is being done by transitioning nsibidi into a morphographic script. Nsibidi is also meant to inspire and encourage learning of the languages it will be used in. Why not just the current ọ́nwụ́ script?I don't know about you, but I know quite a few fluent Igbo speakers that have trouble reading a sentence in the ọ́nwụ́ Latin-derived alphabet. If you give an average Igbo speaker a novel in Igbo, even with all the diacritics in place, they will not be able to read it as fluently as an English speaker reading an English book. The problem, for Latin, is that Igbo is a tonal language and it has limited grapheme's (symbols) to represent the many different tones, phonemes (sounds) and syllables that Igbo utilises. Latin was never made for Igbo, it was there for the convenience. Chinese, and some other tonal languages are read by billions of people with logographic writing systems. To a certain extent, Igbo/Ibibio was using some logographic symbols. Logographic symbols do not require you to pronounce individual parts of a word, but, rather, to identify the word as a whole which is important in languages with lots of homophones (where multiple words have the same sound). Ákwà, Àkwá, Ákwá are popular examples of Igbo tonality. Let's not forget the issue of Igbo language dialectal intelligibility and Standard Igbo; nsibidi could almost provide a solution to the issue of Igbo literature being unintelligible to certain Igbo languages, and the perceived bias towards certain languages by leaving open the pronunciation and variation of certain words and their tones. Nsibidi also cuts down words/sentences in Igbo, or those new/translated words that are actually sentences and that cannot be understood in one word using the Latin alphabet. With a logographic script, backed by a simpler yet relevant syllabary (now alphabet) derived from the design of nsibidi, Igbo writing can go places that it may have never gone before." We need to stop accepting negative versions of our history written by the white man if we cannot independently verify it as fact.
BTW I have never said that religion is not a tool of oppression. I believe that the greatest too of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. Mali and Songhai did the hunting and keep some for them self as servant others they sale to the Berbers which the Berbers will keep to them self as slave and many of the slave do get their freedom and become loyal to their Berber masters, and many of them will play an important role in the military of many empire that existed in north Africa, while others will be sold to the Arabs by the Berbers and the Arabs also buy slaves from central Asia[Turks aka Turkic],East Europe and west Europe by tribute to Moors/Arabs. |

Even your claim that those ancient Afirican writing system were introduced by Arabs is without any foundation. Nobody has provided any evidence that Arabs ever conquered any part of Africa. Example North Africa, go and read about the fall of Fatimid empire and also south of Sahara the answer is No Arabs conquered that part of Africa instead it was the kingdom of Morocco that did, and will be defeated by Africans from south of Sahara eg The two bambra kingdoms, the unified military of Songhai and Tuareg. |

abagoro: Ndoki is not Asa but they are both often referred to as Ukwa people. The West of Ukwa that has boundary with Etche is known as Asa while the East of Ukwa that has boundary with Ibibio is Ndoki. Azumini is Ndoki. I understand, thank's. |

[quote author=abagoro post=27871391]There is distinct Asa homeland which is Ukwa west LGA in Abia State that has boundary with Omuma and Etche in Rivers State, Ugwunagbo and Ukwa East(Ndoki) in Abia while they own farmlands alongside Ndoki and Etche at Obigbo in Rivers State. Asa is very rich in crude oil. Owaza reknowned for their oil wealth is in Asaland.[/quote The same Owaza that Ndoki people said to be part of them, Asa did not start and end in Owaza it gose beyound and covers a large area. From your statment it looks your sayin that Ndoki are also Asa because that has been what i'v know about them for many years. |
