Apart from the natural landscape there is no wow factor It’s a hotch-podge of ideas with no coherent theme. For example, Nigerian theme, Middle Eastern theme, Indian theme etc. against that background would look spectacular. Without this extra element, the whole thing seems bordering on tacky, somewhat clinical like a hospital. I think without the theme these just amounts to generic wedding. Like chaves on a quick prearranged vagas wedding.

Typical Ghanaians! I say so, because it is only thing certain about the video. The man doing most of the shouting must be Ghanaian because he was very ugly, with his big broad forehead, broad face and white lips.

Ghana people have a tendency to twist things around and act as if others are the ones who do the things that they do. For instance, Ghanaians are the ones who tend to say they are Nigerians when caught wrongdoing. They are the Africans craziest about dating white folks. Here, this Ghanaian is at pains to accuse a man who says he is Gambian of being an impostor Nigerian. Trying to fool worldwide viewers that Nigerians - not Ghanaians - are the ones who go around pretend to be from other nations.

Typically, as Ghanaians often do, he shot himself in the foot. Firstly as a Ghanaian he was not best placed to tell if the man was or was not Gambian. Only a Gambian could tell with any measure of certainty. Secondly, he revealed Ghanaians as collaborators who report others to immigration and thirdly he revealed Ghanaians as people that are intensely jealous of people with white partners because this is the thing Ghanaians most cherish.
Politics / Cuba Protests Us Screening by Liedetect: 9:36pm On Jan 06, 2010

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/world/6800327.html

HAVANA — Cuba summoned the top U.S. diplomat on the island Tuesday to protest extra screening for Cuban citizens flying into the United States, calling the measure a “hostile action” meant to justify America's trade embargo.

Josefina Vidal Ferreiro, director of the Cuban Foreign Ministry's North American affairs office, said the new security controls were “discriminatory and selective.”

“We categorically reject this new hostile action by the government of the United States against Cuba,” she told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview.

Vidal Ferreiro said she lodged the protest in an afternoon meeting with Jonathan Farrar, the head of the U.S. Interest Section, which Washington maintains in Cuba instead of an embassy. Cuba's top diplomat in Washington delivered a similar message to State Department officials earlier in the day, she said.

The United States imposed the airline security measures Monday following an apparent attempt by a Nigerian man to blow up a passenger jet as it approached Detroit on Christmas Day.

Among the 14 nations whose citizens will face increased scrutiny are four — Cuba, Iran, Sudan and Syria — that the U.S. government considers state sponsors of terrorism.

Cuba has been on that list since the 1980s, but has always maintained its inclusion had more to do with the United States' antagonistic policy toward the communist-governed nation than with evidence that it sponsors terrorism.

Washington and Havana have been at odds since shortly after Fidel Castro took power in Cuba on New Year's Day 1959. The United States has maintained a trade embargo on the island — which the Cuban government refers to as a blockade — for 47 years.

“The arguments the U.S. uses to keep Cuba on the list of state sponsors of terrorism are totally unfounded,” Vidal Ferreiro told the AP. “Everyone knows they are politically motivated and only designed to justify the blockade against Cuba.”

She said Cuba has a spotless record against terrorism, adding that Washington maintains a double standard because it harbors several individuals Cuba considers to have committed terrorist acts on the island.

In Washington, State Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said Cuba's inclusion on the terror sponsor list was justified.

“Cuba is a designated state sponsor of terrorism, and we think it's a well-earned designation given their long-standing support for radical groups in the region,” he said, highlighting Havana's support for Colombian rebel groups.

Book reveals Challenges facing African Married Couples in US - PART 3 of 5

A Nigerian academic and naturalized American citizen has written a book to advise his fellow immigrants in the United States about how to avoid divorce. Dr. Ernest Ndukwe says moving to the US from Africa often places great strain on a marriage. He’s done intensive research into the factors leading to the breakdown of Africans’ relationships in the United States. Dr. Ndukwe’s book offers reasons for what the academic describes as a “divorce plague” among his fellow African immigrants in the US. In the third part of a series on informative books by Africans, VOA takes a look at the publication, entitled Is Marriage Doomed in America?

With an academic background in geology and environmental studies, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe readily acknowledges that he isn’t a likely candidate to pen a book on divorce. Nevertheless, having himself endured a separation three years ago, and being convinced that the experience of being an immigrant to the US contributed greatly to the failure of his marriage, Ndukwe’s convinced he’s qualified to write on the subject.
“Thousands of books have been written about divorce,” says the part-time lecturer at various American academic institutions, “but during my research I realized that very few have been written about the unique stresses and strains that the marriages of immigrants – and especially Africans – suffer when they settle in the United States. I have tried to fill part of this gap.”
Ndukwe’s also a senior environmental quality analyst at the State of Michigan’s Department of Environmental Quality. He arrived in the US in 1977 and married in 1999. The union ended six years later but produced three daughters. Ndukwe says they, and another daughter from a previous relationship, provided further motivation for his book.

“Right now, (my kids) are still very young, ranging from five to ten years old. I had to write this book because I wanted my children to know what happened. Eventually when they grow up and they’re able to read and understand, I wanted them to know what happened between me and their mother,” Ndukwe says, and then explains further, “When a four-year-old kid is saying ‘Dad, why don’t you love me?’ it really hurts. That’s one of the main reasons I wrote the book – not to attack their mother, but to try to explain that when people get divorced, it’s not because they don’t love their children. It’s because they themselves can no longer get along.”
Ndukwe, who grew up in the district of Onitsha in south-eastern Nigeria’s Anambra State, emphasizes repeatedly that he didn’t write the book in order to “take revenge” on his former spouse.
“I really have no bitterness…. I wrote the book not from a selfish point of view…. I wrote it in an attempt to make people understand the reasons why two people who are from other countries come to the US and then begin to grow apart, for various reasons. Immigrating to a new country, and adapting to a totally new culture, is very traumatic and sometimes marriages do not survive that trauma,” he reasons.
As regards divorce rates among immigrants in the US, and especially Africans, Ndukwe says the news is “not really very encouraging…. Their divorce rate is really increasing.”

Africans in US don’t have family support

Ndukwe says very few Africans are comfortable with discussing divorce, which is “highly stigmatized” across his home continent.
“Given the cultural background that I come from, divorce is not something that anyone really talks about. It’s very, very rare (in Africa),” he maintains. “Over there in Nigeria (and in many other parts of Africa), people will do just about anything possible to make sure that divorce doesn’t happen.”
Mostly, says Ndukwe, this “saving of collapsing relationships” is undertaken not by registered marriage counselors, as in the US, but by family members who “lend support and do their best to mediate between the spouses.”
But immigrants in America don’t have access to their extended families, and so he says “everything breaks down and divorce is often inevitable.”
Ndukwe knows what he’s speaking about. He has eight brothers and sisters and what he calls a “massive” extended family.
“Coming from such a large family is something that as an African I cherish. This is something that I value immensely, and it’s helped me through dark periods in my life, having the support of my brothers and sisters. But when my wife and I moved to the US, we could no longer count on this. This, I believe, was a major factor in the breakdown of our marriage.”
Ndukwe says divorce is “very easy” in the US, compared to Africa, and this also contributes towards rising incidences of official separation among immigrants in the US.
“In Africa, it takes a long time for someone to organize and go through a divorce. Over here, someone quickly runs to a lawyer, hands over money, and gets a piece of paper and next thing you know, you are in court and your family is breaking down.”
He explains further that the scenario in America, with both spouses often having to work in order to “just make basic ends meet,” also contributes to divorce among African immigrants in the US.
“You have the husband and the wife working, and they have to work so they can make a living to support their family. Many times the (immigrant) families don’t have the luxury for just one person to work. That creates a lot of pressure, a lot of stress, on the families,” he says.
“In Africa, the wife (mostly) stays at home, makes a home and looks after the kids…. Things are more stable, and marriages survive more.”
In the United States, the family unit is often forced to split up because of “necessity for economic survival,” Ndukwe says, and babysitters take care of small children until they’re ready to go to school.
“Africans find this situation very difficult to deal with, and they often think they are failing their family, and it leads to the parents fighting all the time and eventually divorcing,” he explains.

Greed and money
For his book, Ndukwe researched marriage and divorce among immigrants in the US from all parts of Africa, but says he “naturally” concentrated on Nigerians living here.
He says, “Based on what I studied, Nigeria has one of the highest divorce rates among all the immigrants in America.”
Ndukwe thinks Nigerians especially seem to “really mourn the loss of their culture and are really affected by it and their marriages deteriorate.”
But he also suggests other reasons for a particularly high rate of divorce among Nigerians in the United States.
“Money. Greed,” he states emphatically. He says Nigerians in particular seem “very attracted by the materialistic side of American culture…. They seem more mercenary than others, placing higher value on money.”
Nigerians in the US, Ndukwe asserts, are especially prone to falling into what he calls the “trap of materialism.”
“My research shows that greed is a major reason why immigrants divorce. In Africa, while materialism is definitely growing, it is not even close to what it is in America. Some Africans…are greedy. They take their eyes away from the essence of marriage, and they put their eyes on materialism and material things.”

Ndukwe also takes note of the “cultural habit” among African men living in the US returning to their home countries to marry someone there and then immediately returning with their new wives. This, he says, also “often results in marital problems” when the wife struggles to adapt to her new surroundings.
This is what happened with regard to his own marriage, Ndukwe acknowledges.
“We stay here (in America), and we go (back to Africa) and within a month or two or six months, we just marry somebody (there). The person doesn’t really know us, and we don’t know the person. That’s a major issue,” he explains.
The new arrivals in America, says Ndukwe, often struggle to adapt to a “totally foreign culture,” as well as having to become accustomed to married life.
“For many immigrants, there is an additional stress that has to do with getting used to the American culture – what is called ‘acculturation.’ That is a problem for many people.”
Africans show love through action… not words and flowers!
In elaborating on the phenomenon of acculturation, Ndukwe refers to the preface to his book, where he writes that the three words “I love you” are “very strange” to most Africans.

“When Africans first arrive here in the US, they are indeed struck by the fact that Americans seem to find it very easy to tell one another, ‘I love you,’” Ndukwe explains. “Growing up in Africa, people don’t go around saying, ‘I love you.’ In the African culture, love is not something you just talk about; it’s not something that you just say; it’s really meaningless (to talk about it). The most important thing is how you demonstrate that love: How you take care of yourself, how you take care of your children, how you take care of your family, how you take care of your parents.”
He says most African immigrants he spoke to for the purposes of his book are “amazed” at the great emphasis Americans seem to place on husbands often giving flowers to their wives.

“Again, this is one of those cultural differences. In Africa, I don’t see men giving women flowers all the time – maybe once in a while, like on Valentine’s Day, and that’s that. But here, giving flowers and things like that – and always saying ‘I love you’ – are big deals in relationships.”
As Ndukwe’s book explains, rifts are caused in many immigrants’ marriages in the US as a result of these cultural differences.
“Often, the wives expect the husbands to behave exactly like the American men, and the African men refuse to do so. The women then say their men don’t love them, and then the marriages suffer…. And before you know it, they are using those cultures to divide themselves. And they forget the culture from where they came….”
Just because most African men don’t often give their wives flowers and purr ‘I love you’ in their ears, Ndukwe asserts, that doesn’t mean they don’t love their women. “We just show our love in other ways, like providing for our partners,” he repeats.
He certainly advocates that immigrants in the US do their best to adapt to American culture but also urges them to retain the “positive parts” of their African heritage.

“Like I said in the book, I’m hoping that they don’t use those aspects that are not part of our culture to destroy their relationship. I just wish that couples coming from Africa will realize that they should take what is best from the American people, and from the American system, and take what is best from the Nigerian or from the African culture…. And meld them together to make their families grow.”
In his book, says Ndukwe, he stressed how important it is for Africans living in America to keep their ties to their home countries “through regular visits home,” and also to maintain their “self-esteem as Africans. Not by rejecting American culture; no. But by assimilating the positive aspects of both African and American culture.”

Reject violence
A strong theme running through the Nigerian academic’s book is a repudiation of violence against women.
“Unfortunately, some African men I have spoken with still seem to think it’s quite okay to use force against women; they think it’s their right as husbands, that their culture allows them to do it,” Ndukwe says.
He adds that while husbands who assault their wives back in Africa “more often than not” escape punishment, this is not the case in the US.
“Whereas you can get away in some African contexts with using violence against women, in the US you will not get away with it. You will be punished severely. This is of course how it should be, even throughout Africa. No matter how angry a woman makes a man, he should never lift his hands against her,” Ndukwe advises.
All through his book, he counsels battling spouses to do their best to treat one another with kindness and respect, “as difficult as it may be.”
He says, “It is bad enough divorcing, without having all the remorse attached to knowing that you were mean to the mother or father of your children.”

And I am wondering if Cameroon will count as an African theatre, when their gernderm murdered 17 Nigerian civilians in a cold blood in Bakassi with any response from you well equipt military.

But what you’ve stated is part of what I mean. Modern warfare is so complex now I’m not sure if anyone can make a convincing argument what sort of weapons are the right ones. Except for nuclear capability, nothing seems final.  The gernderms who killed our people would have done so had we owned Euro-fighters –for one thing Cameroon are embolden   because they think they can count on the French – so they wouldn’t be deterred by fear of a militarily up to date Nigeria. Therefore, I feel that it is pointless over-analyzing the equipments posted. America like the soviets befor them could put an end to the Afghanistan situation with nuclear weapons but the delicate international balance and moral constraints prevent them. Likewise up-to-date military weapons would still struggle in Somali, Congo, Sudan where people drive up an down dusty roads with machine gun mounted bicycles. It seems to me, therefore that well trained soldiers, logistics and determination are  the most vital quality , heavy equipments are nether here nor there and can be purchased when required.  This is why the criticism seems odd. People may disagree but it seems to me, personally, that modern warfare has left the old arguments behind.

Eziachi :

You are posting most outdated military weapons on the internet as pride of Nigeria military and when it's pointed out to you, you making noise about patriotism?

So you will happily go to a shop today and buy your child a computer based on outdated window system? Say windows '95 for example and is even 14 years old, compared to MIG planes that are more than 35 years out of date in the weaponry world.

That is exactly what the Nigeria military are doing, parading weapons not even use during the Vietnam war. I feel sorry for any idiot that will fly in those flying coffins for any battle. No wonder they couldn't handle the militant in the Delta, because those boys must have had a better weapon than them. No wonder their masters in Abuja resorted to amnesty in the end.

Actually, the weapons posted if anything are too sophisticated for the purpose for which they were bought, which is warfare in the African theatre. The corruption that exists in arms procurement is another argument. In fact, I don’t believe I’m stretching credibility to any great extent by suggesting that most black African armies would struggle against a European first world war force. In most black African wars, Nigeria need only employ well-trained men, logistics, rifles and sam-pipes.

When it comes to foolishness you may want to reconsider your hang-ups about 'MIG pictures'. Arms manufactures are out there and are  keen to sell all but the most vital equipments to forign governments ,subject to certain sanctions imposed upon them by their own government and which, in any case, can be gotten around in the black market . I think you will make a very good leader of the conspiracy theorist organisation of the world. Keep it up.

Hardly a conspiracy theory to point out the obvious truth that one should not trust the identity, people one cannot see ascribe to themselves.  Moreover, the agenda of Racist organisations in relation to the internet is hardly a public secrete. Indeed, in the early days of the internet there were two major schools of thought. The first concerned the impact  that far right organisations would have on a medium of free information such as the internet represented and the second was the impact that the internet might have on “dictatorships” such as china. This was in terms of empowering dissidents against the grip on political power and information exerted by oppressive regimes.

If memory serves me, there was a BBC Panorama investigation a few years back covering this very issue of the internet and the growing links between far right organisations across America, Europe and so on.

Just because someone post on a Nigerian board or calls himself warriboy and puts his place of origin as Lagos does not means he is Nigerian.

on  a separate note, also few people  seem to know that it has been the policy of far right organisations since the 80's to link up worldwide and wage internet based war. This typically takes the form of propaganda, sowing misinformation, and hacking, spreading racial and ethnic hatred on forums in addition to their usual tutoring of any whites interested, on how to wage or survive urban warfare, how to make simple explosives or to poison water supplies etc.

Come back on me and argue as much as you want I don’t care. I just like Nigerians to be more aware when on the internet and don’t let yourselves be manipulated easily.

Nigerians, their greatest enemy – Andrew Young
By WILLY EYA, SUNDAY ANI, ONUKWUBE OFOLUE & OGE OKONKWO
Sunday, November 8, 2009

Former United States permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Andrew Young last Friday did a critique of Nigeria and her citizenry and concluded that Nigerians are their own greatest enemies.
Young spoke during the first convocation lecture of the Bells University of Technology, Ota, Ogun State.
Young whose lecture was titled What’s wrong with Nigeria? described Nigerians as a gifted set of people, all over the world but “ they don’t appreciate themselves or celebrate themselves’’

He told the gathering which included former President of Ghana, Mr. John Kuffor and his Nigerian counterpart, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo that there was no reason why anybody in Nigeria should be hungry.
“You are endowed with both natural and human resources. What’s wrong with Nigeria?. God has done everything for Nigeria. God has given Nigeria abundant nutrition, we must tap it for the good our people. You have geniuses , yet you don’t appreciate yourselves, you don’t like yourselves. What’s wrong with Nigeria?, he asked rhetorically.

The Ambassador said: “All Nigerians that I know are hardworking and intelligent. They are geniuses. Nigerians, be they men or women are great people. They are resourceful and diligent, Young said amidst thunderous applause.
The solution is that we must celebrate Nigeria and Nigerians; it is a great country of great people. The diplomat opined that for Nigerians to continue to play her pivotal role in the African continent, her people must de-emphasize reliance on government.

Young predicted that Nigeria would be one of the most powerful nations, if her people continue to appreciate themselves. Said he : “ What I think is wrong with Nigeria is directly opposite what I think is wrong with the United States. In the United States, we have put little efforts to help government, but in Nigeria, there is too much emphasis on government.

Yes, we need government as a people, but Nigerians should depend less on government. Yes, strong private sector is necessary for a country because that’s where the money is , but we must maintain a balance between government and business.
Government must respect business and business must respect government, because they are two essentials of growth and development. You make money in a growing economic, so let’s us support and promote our economy”.

So let us keep our culture/traditions irrespective of what other primitive Africans who believe that abandoning their culture and aping oyibo means they have somehow become enlighten when in fact they have become slaves.

So many African countries abandoning of culture is what has given the world the common perception that Africans have nothing to offer apart from lions, wildebeest, HIV, starving people and rhythm/music. In fact even the music aspect is being taking away from Africa, for they have subverted it into world music. Whilst Asians, Arabs, Oriental’s etc are held up as people with great cultures, Africa apart from Nigeria offers nothing.

Let us keep our bride price, traditional wedding, foods, clothing, language polygamy and other traditional beliefs in fact the more enlighten one becomes the more one realise the importance of cultural relevance.

I am not advocating we abandon new things but only that in the process of doing so we should not abandon what is ours.

In Palestine, a suitor has to provide twenty five thousand pounds worth of gold to the women before her parents accept him and some of us here cry blood for a goat and want to abandon culture.

You always take people off the topic and start chastising and castigating Nigeria.

An interesting perspective makes a change from the constant self criticism of Nigerians

Nairobi (Kenya) - East Africa offers a vantage point for observing one of the great surprises of the continent: Nigeria, till now famous for its conmen, is becoming an African and world economic superpower right under our eyes.

Indians Taking Over Nigerian Jobs?

*Let us hear your views whether or not Indians are taking over Nigerian jobs, thereby worsening the unemployment situation in the country.

On Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 8:28 am Masterweb News Desk received an email from one Alhaji sabo Ibrahim Danbaba ( Email: danbaba@yahoo.com ) which read as follows:- "Why do we cry of unemployment in Nigeria and at the same time have so many Indians who are ordinary cleaners in Dubai taken over all the employment vacancies in Dangote industries, especialy in Obajana Cement Plc and Benue Cement Plc. Is that one of the benefits of Privatization?" Are Indians really taking over jobs in Nigeria? Send your comments to info@nigeriamasterweb.com or - Click Here -

Dont you feel that those of us (foreign/Indian origin) born in Nigeria deserve a sense of belonging? Or dont we deserve to be of service to Nigeria? Nigeria's time shall come again."

If every Nigerian Governor, legislator and Minister builds a factory with the amount of money they are making in Government instaed of buying houses overseas, acquiring multiple expensive cars and landed property they would have been the largest employer of labour comparable to Indians in Nigeria. In short, Indian establishments are the highest employer of labour in Nigeria today. I need to be proven wrong by anybody."

I live in mumbai {India} where Nigerians finds it very difficult to get accommodation.Indians are very racist people. There are sometimes when the police will instruct house owners and hotel operators not to rent their houses or rooms to "BLACK" men. Last year I travelled to Pune 197km from Mumbai I was,nt able to get a hotel room to pass the night because of the colour of my skin. The hotel operators all told me "Fully booked"I tried to investigate why, even though I already knew it was because of the colour of my skin.I remained inside the cab and sent the driver to ask for a room on my behalf. They told him there were vacant rooms, but upon seeing me approaching the reception their faces changed. And they immidiately told me the same world FULLY BOOKED. Yet Indians lives like kings and queens in my Beloved and only country, Nigeria. They live in the best areas in Ikoyi,V,I. During the Mumbai attack of 26\11 last year, a local t,v station here in Mumbai CNN IBN, was broadcasting unverified live news on air that Nigerians were shooting guns at cafe Leopold in Colaba area of Mumbai. For more than 30 minuites the news was on air.We were all scared of moving out of our various pidgen holes we call houses. That kind of news is not only insighting but also image tarnishing. That,s to point out just how this people hate black people and Nigerians in particular. The Nigerian embassy in New Delhi is not functional at all. It,s difficult to communicate with a Nigerian in that office except Indians who can,t speak good english. And anytime you tell them to put you through to a Nigerian official they will simply tell you that non is on desk and they will ask you to call back after 30mins.Every 30mins you will be ask to call back after 30mins. It was only when I told somebody{an Indian lady on phone that I was a barrister sent by the Government of Nigeria to investigate the plight of Nigerians in Mumbai and that I wanted to speak with a top official that she Immidiately almost ambarrassed me with many Sir"s.And she immidiately put me through to one official whose name I will not mention here. Under the pretence of being a Nigeria barrister sent by the federal government,I was able to get his attention and ask him why were they not performing their duty.Though I did,nt like the fact that I lied, but that was the only way i could get attention.three{3}days after threatening to report the non chalant attitude of the embassy officials to the government They sent a delegate to Mumbai to appeal to the police commissioner. I could go on and on with many instances, why i,m very angry about the kind of respect and privilages given to Indians in My country,Nigeria.I want to beg those responsible for the recruitment of workers to please value their citizens first before this people who hate us like shit in their country."

[ Bayo Ogunleye on 'Indians Taking Over Jobs in Nigeria' ] - Saturday, August 1, 2009 at 1:24 pm, Bayo Ogunleye ( Email: bayoogunleye@yahoo.com ) wrote:- "Permit me to add my voice on the subject matter. As a true nigerian and believer in pursuit of global peace, let us all put aside our wrong beliefs and look at the subject matter with a view of making our great country great. Out of every family in Nigeria whether extended or immediate, you will discover that one of their ward is being represented out side the shores of this country. The question is; do we ask the goverment of that country to deny them JOBS or what? Fellow nigerians, lets us change our attitude towars work and stand up for our rights. This minority called INDIANS are not our problems. Our problems can be summarised in two ways;
1.OUR ATTITUDE: I often tell people around me that you can't change what happens to all the time but you can change the way you react to them. We need a positive attitude. Choose to be great and purse it with all vigour. Some of us go after what is minor to us and leave that which is major. How can you be great with that? I don't believe in the colour of a race but the intent of the heart is my major concern, ask yourself, when was the last time you added VALUE to this great country of ours? if the answer is on the negation, then stop raising questions like INDIANS are getting employed in this country. I am sorry to say, if you are being treated else where in other country and you don't like it then come home. Most of us complain that we are treated badly while in the first place you are an ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT in that country.
2. Secondly, our leaders are our problems. they steal money meant for the masses, loot and take to another country and even when caught, we still celebrate them like our hero with various traditional titles in our homeland. I sometimes feel like cryoing for this great country. One of our goverors was caught in london lately, today, he is celebrated in this country. So many more cases like that and some of them are still enjoying the loot. All this countries like America, take a critical look at them and you will see good governance as one of the key factors to thier growth. In Nigeria, most of our governors and their wives after two terms in office, they are representing their states at the National Assembly as a senator. My question is this, ARE THEY THE ONLY WISE PEOPLE IN THAT STATE? WHAT DO THEY WANT TO OFFER THAT THEY HAVE NOT OFFERED BEFORE NOW?.
I will go on and on for years if we want to talk abot these leaders of ours. But please tell them that the "NATIVES ARE COMMING AND WE WILL TAKE OVER" this country from them." As a Nigerian who has lived all his life in the country, I am saying a categorical NO to this line of thought. Where are the jobs that Indians are taking over? If someone outside the country reads this type of news he or she would have a wrong opinion of the happenings in the country. Majority of Nigerians are self employed artisans who try to eke a living by engaging themselves in various occupations. However, the political and econmic atmosphere, coupled with a decay in infrastructure where electricity supply for them to engage in their trades is virtually zero have rendered all efforts by Nigerians to work a nullity. Most of them have turned to nearest paying job of engaging in transportation: by driving buses, taxis, tricycles and the worst of them all commercial motorcycles popularly called ''okada''. To grasp the real situation of things, go to the most essential employers of labour in Nigeria and count how many Indians are employed by them. By this I mean government establishments in the three tiers of government that we have in Nigeria; the Federal, State and Local governments. They are the highest employers of labour as other areas of activities have nearly wound up operation. I doubt if you would find up to a 100 Indians employed in all the local governments and state governments put together and the federal government itself. The organised private sector has virtually gone commatose. Industries have closed shops to seek better investments elsewhere, especially Ghana. Look, let's shift our attention to more pressing issue in Nigeria. The Europeans, especially the British make a terrible mistake by amalgamating hundreds of different ethnic nations who have nothing in common together thereby creating a useless behemoth called Nigeria. This is the root cause of that nation's problems. We have to visit this issue in order before genuine solution can be found to Nigeria's unending problem. Anything short of this will end up being no solution at all." Masterweb thanks Ayantayo for his comments. Are Indians really taking over jobs in Nigeria? Secondly, they take their employment very seriously. Above all, they are ready to work in harmony with the success of the company on their minds. Any Nigerian seeking employment is determined to go in to do his own personal business, very proud of their employment title "The Director" Whereas an Indian director will walk into the factory to observe the progress and the production in the factory or the problems of the factory workers. I am sure, Dangote will not be crazy to equip his company with this bunch of dishonest Nigerian job seekers that will trash the management of Dangote Business empire with Doctor's leave note after securing their respective employments. The fact is this since from the time Uthman Danfodio came to Nigeria to spread Islam. His descendant after him took over the control of Nigeria. All the Emirs in North and south of Nigeria are Fulani's. You can only become the ruler of a city or village in Nigeria if you from a royal family. But Fulanis came to Nigeria and took over everywhere. It is believed that the Fulanis came from United Arab Emirates, Yemen Abu-Dhabi and Dubai area, hence the title emir being used in Nigeria. It is known that there is no race called Arab. The so called Arabs belong to Indian RACE. When Dangote hired Indians he hired his kin's men. Presently I work with Indians, from this vantage point I make the following observations: Nigerians I believe are to understudy the expert whether Indians or whosoever in order to take over after 2 to 4 years. The question is, is that what is obtainable? The ministry of interior need to investigate Experts are required in areas in which local competence is lacking. But most of the Expatriates don't fit this class. Less qualified persons in the name of expatriates who do not add value to our system demand locals irrespective of qualification and professional competence to address them as master. Funny! Slavery in our land. Nigerians we complain are lazy and steal, but the truth is human capital is not valued in our country. I will illustrate with myself. I am IT manger in my company but my annual take home including other benefits is far less than the cost of keeping an Indian generator Technician in my company. Note not including his salary, just his house rent, house girl salary, driver, security guard etc. Tell me if not the grace of God what would be my output on the job. No one rejects qualified expatriate staff but the issue for those who may what to investigate is that most so called expert only come to understudy Nigerians and then after six months begin to bark out orders. Most of then in fairness marvel how they got jobs ahead of their Nigerian subordinates. In all masterweb as you embark on this journey to inform and educate find good channels to make the observation of your readers reach decisions makers. I don't want to be wordy, but i want to inform you that Indians have taken over IT work as well, not only in Dangote in Nigeria. Go to First Bank, UBA, FCMB, Oceanic FinBank, Fidelity just to mention few. Indians have taken over management of major Banking Applications in the name of Consultancy and they don't have training centre in Nigeria, most trainings programmes have to be scheduled in India. Not only that , most Internet Service Provided in Nigeria are Indian Companies. Go and find out. There is one called Direct-On-PC at Ilupeju, they will charge you for an epileptic Internet service on quarterly bases and the charges must be paid upfront. They won't give compensation whenever the service failed within that period. It is very terrible. They operate much like our Nigeria-breed Power Holding Company. The injuury they give unsuspected subscriber is terrible. Nobody to complain to. They have found thier ways into Nigeria Government to the point that all we are saying here may not yield serious correction. The effect of this incurssion is that our Computer Applictaion Development is highly jeopardised. I used to develop some Banking Application modules for Banks in early 80s and most of the banks were using Local Applications developed fresh University graduates who by now would have become International Consultant as well but because no Govt. was mornitoring the Indians all the zeal in us have gone far away and we ar left with mere running End Of Day /Start Of Day of Indian Banking packages, but i tell you, all that zeal to get advance way of writing Banking packages have beel lost. I don't think there is any Bank developing her own Banking Application in house any more. They prefer travelling to Indian to get one. These banks paid heavy exchange rate to send staff to Indian. You need to find out how much Big Banks like First Bank , UBA paid to keep an average indian in Nigeria just to fix a script. It is terrible. It is very painful when you see these applications that they are not as friendly as they ealier said. Go and ask all "FINONE APPLICATION" users in all those banks. It is densily populated with error messages and often Indians will be called to come and fix them . It is too easy for all these indians to come to Nigeria. Just too easy. They have mostly killed all our IT development. You may see all the IT Department of these Banks to confirm what i have said. Check other sectors of the economy the story is the same." Yes they are taking over Nigerians jobs and not only that they also abused expatriate quotas through their collaborators. I had opportunity of working for an Indian firm where some many Nigerians workers were maltreated and injustices reign in this company like apartheid in South Africa (Discrimination in every forms you can imaging); it is very unfortunate that these so called Indians came to Nigeria and have become employment/economy terrorist, they have formed a cartel whereby them patronize themselves, no any other firms or individual can really do business with them, except their own fellow Indians. There is a company called UTAS Ltd is a subsidiary of Chellarams Plc wholly owned by Indian, in this company there a lot of Indians there who claimed they are engineers but they are not, in the course of interaction with some of them I discovered some of them are cleaners or road side mechanics in India (country), they know nothing about the job they employed them for, but they are made to head every department of the company. Obajana Cement Plc is a company that has a contract agreement with UTAS several Indians are brought from India to work for them. Also, another thing that annoyed most is that they claimed they are Expatriate, but they are not, having verified some of their claims. Personally I am soliciting that both Private and Public organizations even the Nigeria Master web should join hands to combat this problem of Unemployment in Nigeria. Because of Unemployment I landed myself here in India." Masterweb thanks Opara for his comments. Are Indians really taking over jobs in Nigeria? Send your comments to info@nigeriamasterweb.com

Please be informed that the same way Indians are taking employment in Nigeria, so also Nigerian are taking employment in other foreign countries, those countries are not crying that Nigerian are taking their employment. We should lean to be fair when confronted with this kind of situation. If any of us have a business in foreign country and our family members back home need a job and he/she is willing to migrate to a foreign land for employment, and I/we choose to bring them over and employed then in our organization, what is the crime? If I have to bring my family members to a foreign land and employ them in my organization to reduced financial responsibility on me, I will not hesitate to do that, if the country/citizens were I have the business is complained, I will tell them to stop crying and be responsible. Such complain is act of discrimination and irresponsibility. If employing Indians will make the country a better nation, well let it be. The responsibility of making our country a better Nation is not just that of the Nigeria Gov only, it includes our individual contribution. We should some time site back ask ourselves, what have will contributed to betterness of our Nation. I am not disputing the fact that we have a very dis-functional Gov at all level, but that should not be a yardstick for us publicly under mind the capacity of our great nation. Take for instance, I am resident in the United Kingdom, educated with experience working with NHS, national Health service in the UK. I saw a job advert posted on the web about an oil and gas company requiring a candidate which I think I am qualify, with good foreign experience. I called up the agency handling the recruitment to intimate them of my interest and experience. I was shocked when the agency asked if I am a Nigeria, I said yes, 'do you carry Nigeria's passport? he inquired I said yes' He then said 'this job is not meant for you' I asked 'why?' he said 'this job is not meant for people with Nigeria passport, those with nigeria passport are clasified as local, and they can not get the job' 'But the job is in Nigeria' I protested He hanged off the phone. [ Jesse Ojobor Writes From Vienna, Austria on 'Indians Taking Over Jobs in Nigeria' ] - Friday, June 19, 2009 at 4:28 am, Jesse Ojobor ( Email: jesse.ojobor@gmail.com ) writing from Vienna, Austria wrote:- "It is an unfortunate development in the Nigerian Labour market and workplaces that foreigners are taking over jobs and positions that Nigerians should by rights and qualifications have. First, I will wan to say that I am not against any move to have foreigners in Nigeria workplace or foreigners having key positions, but I am against the motives by companies (foreign or national) trying to showcase their competences to do business by having a long list of foreigners whom they call "experts" among the rank and files of workers in their companies. Most of these companies are carried away and most times fooled by a foreign degree holder status, on which they thought they (foreigners) have the qualifications to perform far over and above Nigerians with similar degrees at work places. More so, these companies attach the age factor to their decision making in choosing either a Nigerian or a foreigner for a particular job, forgetting that the Nigerian educational system has been so many times been truncated with endless strikes by ASSU, NASSU or any other political or social violence, therefore resulting Nigerian youths and students to study or finish their studies at the Universities longer while their counterparts in Europe and other parts of the world are already working for 3-4 years with experiences. In the European Union, there is what they call "Third Country Nationals" meaning for any vacant job position, the first priority is given to the citizens of the country in questions, if there is non from that country qualified, it then goes to the any body from the whole EU region, if this is not still gotten, it goes to the EEA - European Economic Area citizen(s) i.e. countries in Europe not in the EU but under the EU influence, then when all these three categories are not met, that job position(s) finally goes to anybody from any region in the world. The question then is, would the job finally gets the the 3rd country national/citizen, the answer is one in a thousand cases. My opinion about it is that, the responsible ministries - Ministries of labour and productivity, works and housing, economic development, the Nigerian Immigration services and other agencies should have a central law that governs the recruitment of foreigners when their are qualified Nigerians who understand the Nigerian cultural, political and economic landscape better than foreigners with little or most times no idea. The National Assembly has a big role to play just as the EU Parliament has done in Europe. I do hope my contribution could highlight some of the gray areas in the Nigerian labour market in relations to foreigners occupying key work positions." Masterweb thanks Ojobor for his comments. I could go on and on with many instances, why i,m very angry about the kind of respect and privilages given to Indians in My country,Nigeria.I want to beg those responsible for the recruitment of workers to please value their citizens first before this people who hate us like shit in their country." It is my believe that no country in the whole wide world can claim to be self-sustaining in terms of manpower exchange and managerial expertise. Nigeria, we all know has never been a productive economy and the unemployment situation in the country had before now assumed an alarming proportion. Taking into consideration several bilateral relations we share with other countries including India, the issue of Indians taking up employment opportunities in Nigeria shouldn,t surprise any rational-mind-ed person. The truth we shouldn,t shy away from is the fact that both our present and past leaders have not really done much in areas of job creation. It is a pity that we don,t have a defined "Employment Policy" as a nation. Worse still is the fact that members of the parliament are more concerned about what goes into their pockets rather than initiate legislative policies that will be for the common good of all. Any attempt to mathematically equate the number of foreigners employed in Nigeria, be it private or public concerns, with that of Nigerians gainfully employed outside the shores of this country will surely produce a jolting statistics. More so is the fact that these foreigners may be equiped with the necessary skills needed by their employers to deliver than our own brothers. We should task our minds on what need be done to create employment avenues rather than waste our energy on juxtaposing statistics that will do us no good. Is it not a shame that the sixth highest producer of crude oil and the most populous black nation on planet earth cannot provide employment for a million people out of its one hundred and fifty million population?" Since it has become obvious that people come on this board disguised as Nigerians in order to attack Nigerians without being attacked back, the logical next step is to suppose that this board is a counterfeit. In other words a board created by Ghanaians pretending to be Nigerians not withstanding the claim to the contrary.  Furthermore, I can imagine that they are the one who full up the board having arguments amongst themselves as if it were Nigerians against other people and then Nigerians see what is happening they come in to add their own stuff not knowing that they are being duped.

Title: The role of Yoruba commercial migration in West African development.

POPLINE Document Number: 050968

Author(s):

Sudarkasa N

Source citation:

In: African migration and national development, edited by Beverly Lindsay. University Park, Pennsylvania, Pennsylvania State University Press, 1985. :40-63.

Abstract:

This paper examines the role of Yoruba commercial migrants in contemporary West African regional trade, from the late 19th century to the present and focuses on a group of migrants who voluntarily left Nigeria to work in Ghana from the late 19th century through the 1960s. Most were forcibly repatriated between November 1969 and January 1970. Taxation and the monied economy forced millions of Yoruba to resettle in different parts of Nigeria; many also tried their luck in Ghana and other countries. Yoruba saw the opportunities that existed in the commercial sector of Ghana to trade Nigerian textiles for Ghanaian Kola and create a new niche for middlemen. Yoruba traders have served as intermediaries between African producers in different countries, as traders who sold overseas goods in small lots, as brokers buying cash crops, and as craftsmen who traded with their machines. In 1960 100,560 Yorubas lived in Ghana, 1.5% of that country's population; nearly 84% of these Yoruba were traders. Yoruba men were 20% of the male traders in Ghana; Yoruba women comprised only 6% of the female traders in Ghana. Yorubas traded imported provisions and sundries, hardware and parts, pots and pans, clothing, shoes and sandals, meat and fish, vegetables, herbs, cloth, bread, and prepared foods; they were, however, excluded from trading wholesale agricultural staples, especially yams and plantains. Most Yoruba traders were small-scale operators whose capital ranged from a few cedis to a few hundred. Yoruba retail traders generally preferred to buy goods from other Yorubas, because of better understanding of bargaining practices and language. Most Yoruba traders had at least 1 assistant, often a young relative. Most had switched trades or commodities at least once; they were very responsive to market conditions. In November 1969, the Ghanian government issued an edict expelling all African aliens; Yoruba traders were being used as a scapegoat for Ghana's economic ills. The Ghanaians mistook numbers and visibility for economic exploitation. The Yorubas created jobs and distributed goods; the economic situation worsened after their expulsion.
