Thanks.

Tried this a few hours back but it didn't work.

I tried Monzo and Revolut but the cards were declined.

Might try the Paypoint or traditional bank option.

THE RETURN - NIGERIA VS UK

You recall I told you we went to a Charity shop to get some things.

Well, one of the things we got then was a good-looking, two-seater grey sofa. It wasn't on our shopping list but we just loved it as soon as we sighted it in the shop. We didn't hesitate to pay for it.

A few days later, the shop delivered it alongside the things we purchased...There it was, our nice, soft and comfy sofa.

Two days after the delivery, I sat on the sofa on a very cool evening and I guess what happened?

Omo, I just heard pe-pe-pe cry, with the back right side unbalanced.

Ha! Chair leg on scatter for back oooo. "Money don go," my Nigerian spirit screamed.

As na only me dey house, I managed to pull the sofa forward and assess the damaged area. Then, I realised that the screws on that backward leg are slack. I took pictures of the damage and I returned the sofa and rested it on the wall.

The next morning, I and my partner called the Charity shop to inform them about the Sofa's misfortune. They apologised for the experience and asked if it was one or two persons that were sitting on the sofa when the dislocation happened. We said just one person.

Well, they offered to come pick it up a few days later. They actually didn't talk about a refund, replacement or repair. I signalled my partner to ask about it and guess what? They said they can't repair it nor sell repaired stuff. We were told to come in for a refund or replacement. Now we were relieved.

At this point, something struck me about the RECALL and other options, for a fairly-used sofa!

We tried to draw a parallel between this post-purchase experience and what we experienced in Nigeria.

Sometime in April, we bought a brand new Hisense Freezer from a major Hisense dealer in Lagos.

A few days after buying it, we realised that the freezer wasn't working optimally; it takes a long time to freeze and defrosts within a short time.

We complained to the dealer who only sent Hisense' customer care details- Fouani Nigeria. We called those ones and they said they don't do after service pick up for freezers less than 300L and we should find our way to Apapa with the freezer. For a brand new freezer with a warranty? I was disgusted by that yeye talk. Same thing happened to us during the pandemic on a freezer we ordered from Konga. From sub-standard products to messy customer service experience. Everything just tire me about Nigeria.

Anyway, the reality dawned on me that people, values and systems are the hallmarks of functioning societies. We got a warm and assuring response for a fairly used product because the system works while the one with a warranty on the brand new product has nothing to write home about.

As I'll always say, there are no perfect systems/countries, but there are better countries/systems.

This is my first return experience in the UK shocked

Thanks for the insight.

I will advise you to open a traditional bank and deposit the money. You can then transfer it to your Revolut account.
omopapa:
Go Post office with your debit card, they will take the cash from you and deposit directly into your acct. Check revolut’s maximum daily deposit
Solumtoya:
You can't. You can open Monzo and deposit £1,000. Better still, give it to someone you trust with a traditional Bank account to deposit and transfer to you.
Lexusgs430:
Head to any shop with Pay Point, give them cash. It reflects in your account immediately........

Usually limited to about £250 per day ........

Hello guys,

It's been a minute off the thread.

I've been swamped with applying for jobs, but more importantly, Nairaland bot bans have been demoralising. The PART 6 of my narration was deleted by the bot.

Moving forward, I'll be sharing my experiences in bits and pieces.
TravelRe: Diary Of A Nigerian Immigrant To The UK by lightnlife(op): 10:07pm On May 17, 2022
Absolutely.

Derailing threads and conversations is a common thing here. grin

justwise:
That will be a good idea only that it will not work, it will be turned to general student visa thread instantly. people here are not capable of sticking to the purpose of a thread.
This isn't the most appropriate thread for such enquiry.

Search for the UK student group.

At best, Google will be your starting point.

Happy Monday, People of the UK wink

Biko, which of these platforms is more suitable for LISA - Moneybox or Beehive?

I gathered they're about the best two, however, I presume one would have an edge against the other.

Thanks for your insight.

Hello Mods,

I've been banned intermittently on this thread since Thursday 12 May 2022, without any major issue.

The bot-initiated ban doesn't permit my posting on this thread or any other.

Thank you for the insight.

This is so helpful.

Just to highlight that for places like the UK, a bit of specifics goes a long way. Yet, not too specific. #BalancingAct
Something like ... strong IT and Computer skills ... might come off in varying ways.
... Office productivity computer skills and IT troubleshooting skills
... Technical support skills and 'Office' type skills
... Strong in PC skills and use of computer applications
... ...
However, I do understand that you might be trying to convey a message that you are adept in technical side of IT (installing, configuring, troubleshooting of Windows 10/11, Azure/AWS/Goggle cloud, Exchange, LAN networking Cisco/Huawei/Juniper routers & switches ...) and use of computer (Office2021/365, desktop publishing MS Publishing/Adobe InDesign/Inkscape ...)

NB: I take note that you've reached out to Aphrodite007 where you're specific on Scrum. That's more like it. All the best.

Hello Aphrodite007,

May I humbly request a space in your mentorship scheme?

Trying to make an entry into the tech space. I recently completed my Scrum Master training.

Looking forward to read from you. Thanks

Aphrodite007:
This is even what I wanted to say to him. He can say whatever he wants to say, but not mention me. If people want to fall for it, experience is the best teacher.

So occupations like agile coach, delivery manager and product manager that don’t have industry-accepted certification bodies, should now jump inside the lagoon?

I have countless mentees that have certs but no experience, I would share my experience with them so they can make it theirs for interviews- if certs are enough, why didn’t they get jobs before I mentored them? Even myself, I am currently in a role that I don’t have a cert for, so it’s funny to hear that from someone not even close to the delivery field.
TravelRe: Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 2) by lightnlife: 6:18pm On May 13, 2022
Interesting thought.

Please, how can an inexperienced person make an entry into these roles?

I have strong IT and Computer skills, and Scrum training and certification.

Any helpful link, guide or resource would be helpful.

Thanks

Goke7:
Now you are shifting the post by saying that certifications can get entry level positions. If you said that earlier, it would have been better. Of course one don't expect experience to be needed for most entry positions. But the positions the op was talking about which you are contesting are positions like product owner, product manager and scrum master are not entry level positions but roles that require some level of experience. Having certifications alone are not enough for such roles especially in the UK. What folks are doing is to falsify their cv claiming experience but then if background checks before resumption claim otherwise then it will be embarrassing.

Folks should be realistic with their expectations and get experience through volunteering or internships to get experience
TravelRe: Diary Of A Nigerian Immigrant To The UK by lightnlife(op):
Bros, you get time and power to dey explain give people ooo.

For starters, there's no basis for comparison between the UK and Nigeria. Is it in trade and economy, Per Capital GDP, Infrastructure or Security?

Many Nigerians who speak down on those migrating secretly wish they could leave the country as well.

Just so they know, migration to a developed country is expensive. You'd only need to ask yourself why the middle class who seem to be doing well in Nigeria leave everything to go abroad? There's something they know that average Nigerians can't see.

It's actually none of anyone's concern if a migrant saves 200pcm or 2000 or 20000pcm. In as much as they're living well and law-abiding, they'll fine.

Londonboyrep:
I beg to differ. Now is actually a good time for migrants in the UK due to brexit. Yes higher taxes but thats as a result of earning more. I’ve lived here almost 20years and I have gradually seen the lives of Nigerians especially improve and not via fraudulent means as the old days. Gone are the days when at best you can aspire to be a security man. Now you see a lot of Nigerian immigrants (not born here) in high flying white collar roles. If you doubt me do a quick sample on linkedin. I seen someone on this thread saying you will manage to save £200 a month?? Nonsense. Easily save £3000 - £4000 a month if not for wasteful habits such as expensive designer clothes and going out a lot.

I want to appreciate you for the information you have freely disseminated, especially the way things go when one arrives Heathrow.

I was with my partner at the airport in Lagos in January this year when the UK call came knocking. So I was ardently involved in the process till departure. What happened in Heathrow is what I can't say anything about.

I am also due to relocate and join my partner next week,so the information you shared here has helped a great deal.

Congratulations once again and may we succeed in the Queen's land in Jesus name.

I didn't envisage this trail of exchange/face-off when I asked the question about making a a career entry in the UK ooo angry. But it's all good, at least, for learning sake. But then, sir and ma, make una watch una words at each other.

That said, I've come to realise that experience will always thrive above paper qualifications. More so because most professions in this age and time are skill-oriented and demand performance. How do you then display skills and performance without experience? Most people in this UK have pointed to the fact that experience counts above certification. A glossary look at job openings on LinkedIn and Indeed will confirm this.

Certificates open the door for a conversation around the role, but having the relevant experiences seals the deal.

For instance, my cousin with first and second degrees from top university in the UK works in an HR company. He told me that all his OGAS don't even have first degree but they're vast on the job due to their years of experience.

My verdict: having both experience and certification is better than having just either of them. Some people will scale through with certification, others with experience. The best is to have both!

Interesting!

Understanding systems and processes is the first step to hacking them.

Most immigrants are usually too optimistic or excited to understand how the system works, hence, they become shattered when the realities of the average African-UK migrant hit them.

If after spending 30/40 years in another country, I see no reason why the person won't want to rush home again. Your home is anywhere you spend more than 180 days per year from 5-10 years...My thought, though.

Where in the UK are you now?

sukkot:
the bolded is what i said. but see that works very well if you are a white man but as a black man you want to return home someday and after 20 years the money is not there and many become trapped over there and depressed. the UK has diminishing returns. you get there and enjoy the light and good roads but then you get used to it and then dminishing returns enters and then you start missing home. butyou were unable to save enough to return home so hence the thousands of depressed older men stuck there doing security job at age 70 and one teenage oyinbo boy is bossing them around.

as per the over 100 visited charity shop yes i was once a collector of vintage antique ornaments so i was a charity shop addict. in all actuality i have been to over 500 charity shops all over the UK. i ddnt reveal the tru number initially so you dont thnk i am a weirdo lol.

as per being a minimalist ? i have become one too in recent years. its a more peaceful and easier life
TravelRe: Diary Of A Nigerian Immigrant To The UK by lightnlife(op):
You be collector wey you don enter over 100 Charity shops? grin

The UK system is structured to help people get by with basic essential things, not to amass wealth.

Back home, your acquisition of wealth doesn't guarantee health and safety. You save, save, save and it could amount to nothing, then one person wey no follow u work at all go con chop the money. So, nothing goes for nothing. Like I've always said, there are no perfect systems anywhere. It's best to just have an exploratory mindset. Expect less but work for more.

Generally, I'm a minimalist and just cool with the availability of basic things. I see every other thing as wahala. The Nigerian system doesn't encourage this mindset. Because of the uncertainties, everyone is trying to grab as much as they can grab, as we always say, no one knows tomorrow. shocked

As you may know, family dependence isn't a big thing here. People even older people live on their own happily. The same isn't applicable in most African countries where 15 people will be looking forward to handouts from one big man in the family.

If everyone could be responsible for themselves, dependency will reduce and Africa will grow faster.

As per savings, I believe in upward mobility. Anyone who knows what s/he is doing will financially max out with time.

Fun fact: we were doing well in Nigeria. Resided in a good neighbourhood with cars, property...and we are way below 40. We left everything becos of the gross uncertainties/fragility in/of the country

Coming to the UK is out of exploration. Starting out won't be easy but we know it'll be better. From saving 200 pcm to 2000pcm, we go make am too for this UK.

sukkot:
bros i done enter over 100 charity shops for UK and i never see brand new bed inside there oooo. everything is used. and brother to make ends meet is one thing but to save is another thing. the society is structured to where you can make ends meet but you cannot save . alright maybe you can manage to save 200 pounds a month grin grin

Heard of clearance sales? Plus they're so open to tell you the state of items here even when they're used.

That's also a valid question.

Nigeria has revenue generation, management and debt problems.

Leaders must think of how to optimise the current resources, generate more and reduce the debt burden.

Citizens must also be willing to sacrifice.
