Yeah, it's small.

I'm not sure one can get a work visa with such pay grade.

20k is like minimum wage/band 3 and most companies don't sponsor for such range.

However, there are millions of Brits living off such salary if there are other household income.

Some families survive on a household income of 40-45k per annum. Again, it's dependent on their lifestyle, location and the dream they have. Meanwhile, some people have a household earning of 70-100k yet they still complain.

I mean earning 20k pounds per annum is small for a family but many wont know until they get there.

50k isn't a bad deal for a start. And yes, it's above fair pay for a single person.

Often, relocation isn't just premised on money.

Most people are financially secured back home but choose to relocate for exploration, security and access to more opportunities.

So, you might as well ask yourself what's the motivation for relocating? That will help you analyse and personalise your quest for relocation.

Most medical people that migrated to the UK on skilled visa started out with an offer of 25K. And they're doing well.

Depending on the industry you work, 50k might be low based on your experience and expertise. But it's all left to you to determine what works fine for you in terms of your current earning and your aspirations.

Best!

Hello All, please I need clarification on something. I recently got a job in the Uk with salary of £50,000.

Below are my questions:
I) is the salary above fair enough for a single guy
Ii) How easy is it to get side jobs outside the one on my work visa?

Queen Elizabeth II don kick bucket...God rest her soul. embarassed

I saw the news of her unstable medical condition on Sky News this afternoon. The thought of her death came to my mind but I didn't want to voice it in public.

At 96, I knew she had little chances of surviving after reading that she was on medical observation.

God rest her soul.

I hope they'll declare week of morning and holiday oooo. grin I need a long holiday

It's what it is; humans will always survive despite challenges.

Yes, Cost is rising without commensurate increase in income. But people are still saving, and living well.

One thing about developed economies is that people are able to afford the basics once they have a job. If they dream of a better livelihood, there are also opportunities. This isn't the case in developing or underdeveloped world.

If you have the opportunity of legally migrating to a developed world, I'd advise you do it. Your fears and doubts about surviving will be drowned within few months.

rofemiguwa:
Thank you for explaining. I know the highest I have seen is 150k pounds and its rare. Most are between 22-55kpounds annually.

Hope rising cost of living is not biting hard!!.

Thanks for dropping by.

All mentioned rates are annualised.

Actually, £45,000 isn't small money. One will live well above the average standard.

The minimum wage is £9.50 per hour. If you work 2000 hours per year (40 hours per week), that'll be £9.50 X 2000 = 19000. The monthly would be around £1500 before tax.

The average salary (annual) is 38k.

So anyone earning 45k isn't a small boy.

Per 150k jobs. I only know of high politicians earning such. Others who earn close/around/above this would be consultants (specialists in any industry) that are not locked down to a single company, and mid & high level entrepreneurs.

I think you're analysing the salary from a Nigerian perspective. grin You should be looking at the cost of living and purchasing power of the currencies involved.

People live on a monthly budget of £700, 900 or 1000 depending on their lifestyle and location.

You only decide and work towards the life/earnings you want.

Quite sure these seniors can provide more insight: dupyshoo, phyl123, TheGuyFromHR, SammyK, Goke7, Amarathripple0, Lexusgs430

rofemiguwa:

Weldone ma. I enjoyed your thread. Please do you mean 45k per annum or per month.

I will really like to know jobs that pay close to 600k pounds yearly because All jobs salary range I see in the UK. I have not seen anyone except 150k pounds per annum.

So I am dazed.

Can you mention possible roles that pay that much. U can mention vaguely maybe mention industries that have high paying salaries

Thank you

Hiya!

I'm not sure all those personal details would matter in your choice of career, job, pay and all.

Roles and earnings are dependent on several factors, primarily, experience, skills, industry and negotiation prowess.

No two persons have exact portfolio and experience in life, hence, there's no one size fit all model for these things.

My previous diary entries have answered of the questions, though.

Interestingly, I've not attempted to convert my current salary to Naira, as you've done. grin I guess you'll finish the reason not to as well.

Best!

The major roles I applied to at inception were between £32K to £45k per annum. But I didn't secure any of them. I'd attribute that to lack of in-country experience.

Then I downgraded to openings between 22k and 25k.

Most of the regular ones that reached out had an average of £19K -21K.

You can check Indeed and LinkedIn for salary ranges.

DO NIGERIANS SPEAK ENGLISH?

Hello, trust you've been well.

As you already know, I've started a fairly decent job here.

Like every other job, communication would be important but I've been inundated with queries about my country of origin. As expected, I say Nigeria and most people go "really, you're from Nigeria? You speak so well."

I'm often turned off by that reaction but I take such moments to educate them that Nigeria is an English-speaking country with millions of fantastic speakers. English is perhaps the first language of some Nigerians.

The one that got to me quite well was when someone asked how Nigeria is an English-speaking country and I told him because Britian colonalised Nigeria. Guy genuinely said he didn't know Britian colonalised Nigeria (or any country). I guess they don't teach colonial history in UK basic education curriculum.

My partner has experienced this as well several times.

Maybe Oyinbo think say we be cave men. grin

Anyway, the weekend is here. I just wanna sleep and be pampered.

Have a lovely weekend, guys.

You can do TB test at IOM Lagos or Abuja. Check Google for their details.

If you have the regular Nigerian driving license, there's no need to get an international license.

Both regular and international license are only valid for use for one year from the date of your arrival in the UK.

This is spot on. You took it out of my mouth.

It might also be worth highlighting that skills demand and supply, government policies and enabling environment influence migration.

For instance, the degree of market-ready talent pool in India isn't the same with Nigeria be it in Tech or Medicine. The Nigerian government and its agencies are constantly making emigration of skilled professionals more difficult; this is somewhat speaks to the culture of butter competition amongst Nigeria.

Solumtoya, it might be more helpful to disaggregate the data by population percentage as the countries have varying poluation size.

Kannyman:

The proportion of change in percentage is quite massive for Nigeria. While Indian doubled, Nigeria actually tripped and this is because

1. Indians are more pro business and have ability to reference themselves more than anyone else.

2. The population of Indian massive and what has left is infinitesimal within numbers outlook

3. The awareness of this route is becoming more in Nigeria whereas Indian has syndicated organisations running migration schemes...

4. We are too independent and competitive minded in Nigeria.

5. Africa is also less favoured. Within the scheme of scale, Africa comes last IMO

LESSONS FROM THE UK JOB MARKET

It was quite interesting to know that the UK had more jobs than people were willing to work. That for me, was a good sign of a thriving society.

Before leaving Nigeria, I was positioning myself to get into the tech industry here, having gotten some experiences from back home.

I applied for several roles, both tech and non-tech roles, but I soon realised some things to help scale my application which eventually resulted in my new job.

Below are some lessons from that process;

1. Have transferable skills. They'll be relevant in whatever role you choose.

2. The UK job market is vast with opportunities.

3. Experience counts more than certificates. Certificates will get you on the interview list but your experiences and skills will decide you procession to the next phase.

4. It's better to research the UK job market before leaving home and get all the necessary skills and certificates to function in your chosen field while still home.

5. As an immigrant (especially from third-world country), your previous experiences/roles would not be automatically equated to the UK market's.

6. Have multiple CVs and cover letters and be ready to tailor them to each person specification of the role in question.

7. Be ready to go low but know what's too low for you. I knew I wouldn't venture into sales, store or warehouse Jobs. Generally, discarded any muscular or healthcare job. At first, I applied for several mid and high level jobs (banks, NGOs, creatives and tech). Got invited for the interviews and got to the last phase but they all reached out saying they couldn't give me job cos I have no in-country experiences. The defining feedback was from a London-based recruiter who reached out to me via LinkedIn. She told me my skills were relevant for a role at Meta (Facebook), but she soon realised I was fresh in the country and tol me they couldn't proceed because of my limited in-country experience. Interestingly, she's a Nigerian and told me as an aside that it would be hard to get those mid and high level roles as a newcomer to the country. She advised I start from lower positions.

8. Research about companies, their work policies, environment and benefits. The first offer I got within the first two weeks of arrival was looking good but after reading reviews online, I wasn't convinced to start with them. Stalled on the Friday before my Monday resumption despite signing the contract. I just believed better offers would come.

9. Give yourself time.

THE JOB MARKET IS JOYLESS grin

Exactly three months after my arrival, I got a job I am really excited about. grin

Prior to this job, I had gotten a handful of offers but I stalled in accepting or starting after re-reviewing the terms of engagement.

Sometime in May (barely a month after my arrival) I got an offer but I didn't proceed cos they wanted me to come to the office for a 4-week training, as against having a hybrid arrangement. Given that I've worked virtually for the past seven years, I figured it'd be odd and mentally disrupting to abruptly change that cycle. Was looking for something closer to that structure, at the minimum.

Anyway, I went through loads of applications and interviews. At first, I applied for mid and upper-level roles but after several interviews, it was clear that they needed people with in-country experience. That notion was sealed after I had an interview with a top recruiter who is a Nigerian and advised that I start out with lower roles despite my upper-level experiences in Nigeria as they are not primarily fancied here.

Fact: Entry-level roles are easily accessible across several industries. However, one must be careful of the company and offer.

I'll share more details in the coming days, as I am getting a hold of the new role.

Goodnight NLs.

Tableau isn't a core tool for business analysis(BA). It's majorly for data analysis(DA). They're often misrepresented.

BA answers the "WHAT" question, dealing with business needs, changes, requirements and documentations.

DA answers the "WHY" question, utilising tools to understand patterns, explain rationales through visualisation.

I'm not unaware of this on gov.uk but I had to post it here to stir a public discourse. Largely to sample if anyone else has heard of the claim that undergraduate studies don't count towards ILR.

Back Story: One of my cousins has been around for about 4 years, and has been doggedly fixed or perhaps, ignorant that her student visa/stay counts towards ILR despite showing her on gov.uk. Was hoping to point to the discourse.

Humiliation; from who?

China is emboldened by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

As with Ukraine/Russia, other countries will sit back when China invades.

It's six months down the line, has anything major happened to Russia or has the other states made a clear-cut frontline support with Ukraine?

If this eventually happens, countries and economies should brace up for harder times premised on post-covid disruptions, Russia's invasion and China's high-handedness.

Na so 2022 sef go finish on a low, at least, for most people.
