This morning, a fire outbreak destroyed part of a Bank inside the campus of the Adekunle Ajasin University Akungba Akoko, (AAUA) Ondo State.  

According to reports, the fire incident affected the four new ATMs that were just installed at the bank and also some offices were burnt down by the fire.

“It took the quick intervention of the men of the fire services department of the university before the situation could be brought under control. For some hours members of staff of the bank were unable to gain access to the bank as they were all outside discussing the incident” an eye witness said.

American singer, songwriter and actress, Demi Lovato has been hospitalised for heroin overdose. The pop star was reportedly taken to a Los Angeles hospital (Hollywood Hills) by ambulance on Tuesday due to a possible heroin overdose.

Demi Lovato, 25, has fought substance abuse for years … at one point she lived in a sober living home after getting released from a treatment center. She had been 6 years sober from alcohol, cocaine and Oxycontin. Demi released a song last month called “Sober,” saying she had relapsed after six years of sobriety.

According to Reuter, representatives for Lovato did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the incident. Los Angeles police said they had responded to a medical emergency call on Tuesday involving a woman on the Hollywood Hills street where Lovato reportedly has a home, but declined to name the person involved.

Celebrity website TMZ, quoting law enforcement sources, said Lovato was rushed to a Los Angeles hospital from her home with what they said appeared to be a heroin overdose. Her condition was not immediately known.

Lovato shot to fame on Disney Channel shows “Camp Rock” and “Sonny with a Chance” 10 years ago, and went on to forge a pop career with hits like “Skyscraper” and “Sorry Not Sorry.”

In her June song “Sober”, she sings “Momma, I’m so sorry, I’m not sober anymore.”

According to Obasanjo, it was high time women optimized their huge population and influential positions in families to negotiate their way up to taking up positions across different levels of governance before men once again turn the tables against them in 2019.

Obasanjo made these calls while delivering the keynote address at a programme held in Ibadan, on Friday, organized by the Initiative for Information, Arts and Culture Development in Nigeria and The American Corner, Ibadan, to engender women’s participation in the political process.

Pointing to the continued shrinking number of women in national leadership positions, evident in seven women in the Senate and 15 in the House of Representatives, currently, Obasanjo bemoaned that women were guilty of self-exclusion and failed to support themselves to attain those political leadership positions.

Though he acknowledged male chauvinism in the society, Obasanjo stressed the need for women to collaborate to dismantle all barriers to their ascendancy, vigorously work to engender gender balance and stand up to attain relevant political leadership positions.Women, he pointed out will wait in vain and continue to gravely suffer the consequences of poor governance and poor leadership, if they continued to expect men to kindly toss power to them.

Drawing from experiences of women who had worked with him in government, Obasanjo argued that women were superior to men in terms of integrity, competence, honesty, leadership qualities, compassion, unwillingness to compromise and capability to deliver good governance.

“As the storms are gathering and the agitations to put an end to the reign of power addicts becomes palpable and the shrilling voices of hitherto reclusive persons have become restless and proactive, insisting that the structure of Nigeria must be determined on a different basis of legitimacy, there seems to be a deafening silence in the camp of our women.

“Our women should draw the line to understand that there are times when silence is golden, at other times, silence is just plain yellow.

“My dear sisters, you have knowledge by going to schools and in your daily businesses and networking, you should understand how to interpret the knowledge and facts but the ultimate is for you to apply the facts, knowledge and network. That is what I call wisdom. Be wise. Those men are yours by birth or by association. Negotiate and seize the hour before they turn the table against you in 2019.

“Our women should take a quick look at history and understand how they have marginalized themselves. How can you yield the political space to be seized by some individuals who could easily have been pocketed by the special ways you have been divinely wired?” Obasanjo questioned.

Acknowledging that women constituted 52 per cent of the nation’s position, Obasanjo averred that the nation will continue to find it difficult to attain greatness, if half of the women fail to attain higher echelon of corporate management and governance, but only ended up in the kitchen or in the “other room”.

Also, at the event chaired by renowned historian, Professor Bolanle Awe, Obasanjo emphasized the imperativeness of girl-child education, especially the removal of all hindrances to free and compulsory girl-child education, like culture, religion, for the first nine years of formal school.

Historically, even till date, Obasanjo noted that women were wont to be prosperous in the informal sector, but bemoaned as perplexing and baffling, their failure to transfer their successes to the realm of politics.

“Needless to say, women constitute more than half of our population, in fact, 52 per cent in Nigeria and their contributions to the Gross Domestic Product is great. No nation will become great when half of her population ends up only in the kitchen and the other room or get disproportionately discriminated against in the higher echelon of corporate management and in governance.

“Is it that they are expecting that men in their kindness will do all these struggles alone, win or capture power and toss it at them? Do we think that our political space is different from your boardroom and business empire where you have been playing?

My lived experience and the world as I know it is powered by shrewd hard-headed, calculating individuals and the cornucopia of their mercy is decidedly thin. It is unlike God’s rain that falls on the wicked and the kind-hearted alike. No, our women must stand up to be counted.

“I should think something is wrong somewhere when a majority allows themselves to be consigned to the ghetto of the power equation. Women should know that they suffer double jeopardy when the wicked or the clueless rule.

Women and their children are usually direct and indirect victims of mis-governance and poor governance and poor leadership, hence should not wait until they are crushed by policies of state made by men who have no regards for their involvement in policy making and execution.

“That is why I say that I hold the women themselves substantially responsible for what I call self-exclusion in the governance structures and processes.

I consider it a sheer tokenism, if not arrant insult that our resourceful, intelligent and morally upright women will be sidelined into the ghettos of power to function perfunctorily by such unelevating nomenclatures such as women leaders or heads of Ministry of Women Affairs?

“The progress and development of any nation, I must say, is equal to the quality of women in that society. This is because they are mothers, sisters, lovers, builders and pro-creators by divine design. Thus, the women represent a tool for positive change, depending on how they are treated and the levels of opportunities given to them to actualize their potentials,” Obasanjo said.

An Airport cleaner at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos State, recently did the unexpected when she found a nylon containing $6,000 and turned it in to security officials at the terminal.

The cleaner who was identified as Charity Bassey, was on duty at the departure wing of the airport when she picked up the item from the floor.

According to her, she was standing in front of the toilet when a passenger drew her attention to something inside the toilet.

“I went in and saw the small black nylon on the floor. It looked dirty and rough, you won’t know it is money that was inside it. I picked it, felt some notes inside and took it to the customer care.

I was given a glove to bring out the contents and I counted 60 pieces of $100 dollar bills.”

When asked what was the reward for her honesty, she said nothing.

“Nobody gave me anything, the manager, company or even the owner who later came back looking for the money. I am however, not discouraged as I do my best to do a good job with clear conscience.

This is not the first time I am picking up forgotten items like wallets, phones, small bags and even money. I have always returned them to the frontline desk or customer care desk,” she added.

The Lagos State police command has arrested a Celestial Church prophet, Dominic Michael, for allegedly administering a killer concoction to one of his members, Ramat Audu.

The incident occurred on May 19 at Jesu Segun Parish, Santana Bus Stop, Ajangbadi, Lagos. Also arrested was the deceased’s live-in lover, Ifeanyi Enyinna, who allegedly took her to the prophet’s church for healing.

It was gathered that the deceased was ill and told her lover to take her to church for prayers. Parading the suspects on Monday, the state Police Commissioner, Imohimi Edgal, said the cleric was apprehended for unlawful administration of herbal concoction which led to the death of the lady.

According to Edgal, one Ibrahim Audu of Akeson in Igando reported that his sister, Ramat, was taken to the church by her lover and she died after drinking a concoction. .

At the scene, Edgal said a native sponge, perfume and candles were recovered, while the corpse was moved to the mortuary for autopsy. He said a sample of the concoction has been sent to the laboratory for examination.

Argentine Football Association (AFA) has raised eyebrows for giving an outrageous advice on how to have sex and get lucky with a Russian girl at this year's World Cup.

The guidance is said to be part of a manual on Russian culture delivered to executives, coaches, players and journalists travelling with the Argentine team to the tournament.

According to Mail Online, the seminar was delivered by Russian language expert Dr. Eduardo Pennisi and organised by the Social, Sports, and Sustainability Commission of the Argentina Football Association (AFA).

It was reported that those traveling with football star, Lionel Messi and other players to the were shocked to be given tips during a seminar which took place on Tuesday.

In one of the chapters posted on social networks was entitled: 'What do I have to do to get lucky with a Russian girl'.

Advice included: 'Russian girls, like any other girl, pay close attention to whether you are clean, smell good and are well dressed.

'The first impression is important to them, so pay attention to your image.'

Another paragraph read: 'Russian girls do not like to be regarded as objects, and hate annoying men. Don't be negative. Don't ask the same old questions, be original.'

It continued: 'They like men with initiative. If you don't have it, practise with other women beforehand.'

'Many men, because Russian women are beautiful, just want to get them into bed.

'Maybe they want that too, but they also want to feel important and special, so you should treat the woman in front of you are someone who has value, with their own ideas and desires.'

He reportedly criticised those who had posted the material online 'in bad faith'.

Meanwhile, following the backlash received online, the Argentine Football Association has apologised claiming that they didn't go through the material before authorising it.

Facebook yesterday said it axed 583 million fake accounts in the first three months of 2018.

It said those closures came on top of blocking millions of attempts to create fake accounts every day.

The social media giant also detailed how it enforces “community standards” against sexual or violent images, terrorist propaganda or hate speech.

Despite this, the group said fake profiles still make up 3-4 percent of all active accounts.

In a report released yesterday, Facebook claimed it “detected almost 100 percent of spam and removed 837 million posts assimilated to spam over the same period.

“Facebook pulled or slapped warnings on nearly 30 million posts containing sexual or violent images, terrorist propaganda or hate speech during the first quarter.

“Improved technology using artificial intelligence had helped it act on 3.4 million posts containing graphic violence, nearly three times more than it had in the last quarter of 2017.

“In 85.6 percent of the cases, Facebook detected the images before being alerted to them by users,” said the report

The figure represents between 0.22 and 0.27 percent of the total content viewed by Facebook’s more than two billion users from January through March.

“In other words, of every 10,000 content views, an estimate of 22 to 27 contained graphic violence,” the report added.

Responses to rule violations include removing content, adding warnings to content that may be disturbing to some users while not violating Facebook standards; and notifying law enforcement in case of a “specific, imminent and credible threat to human life”.

Improved IT also helped Facebook take action against 1.9 million posts containing terrorist propaganda, a 73 percent increase. Nearly all were dealt with before any alert was raised, the company said.

It attributed the increase to the enhanced use of photo detection technology.

Hate speech is harder to police using automated methods, however, as racist or homophobic, hate speech is often quoted on posts by their targets or activists.

The prosecutor, Insp. Johnson Okunade, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on May 7, at about 8:00 p.m., at Ayoomodara St., Ado-Ekiti. He said the defendant quarreled with the complainant, and in the process poured hot semovita on her, which caused her harm.

He said that the offence contravened Section 415 of the Criminal Code, Law of Ekiti State, 2012. The prosecutor applied for adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses. The defendant’s counsel, Kayode Oyeyemi, urged the court to grant bail to his client, and promised that he would not jump bail.

The Chief Magistrate, Adesoji Adegboye, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until June 15 for hearing.

The Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH), Ikorodu, on Friday said it had expelled 202 students for cultism and examination malpractices between 2015 and 2018.

Mr Samuel Sogunro, the institution’s Rector in his report to the 8th Congregation of the polytechnic, said 183 students were expelled for cultism while
19 were sent packing for exam malpractices.

Sogunro said 88 of the 183 students were in the School of Full-Time Studies while 95 were in the School of Part-Time Studies.

According to him, nine of the 19 students dismissed for exam malpractices were full-time and 10 were part-time students.

“The present administration has zero tolerance for cultism and the Polytechnic Governing Council has directed that the names of the culprits should be published in a national daily and that would be done soon,” he said.

Sogunro noted that the management had instituted four types of students empowerment programmes to expose students to entrepreneurial skills and empower them while in school and after graduation.

He named the programmes as Agriculture Students’ Empowerment Scheme (ASES), Industrial Technology Students Empowerment Scheme (IT-SES), Students Projects’ Empowerment Scheme (SPES) and Employable Skills ‘Acquisition Empowerment Scheme (ESAES).

On the school’s academic programmes, the Rector said 66 out of the 67 programmes offered by the polytechnic were due for re-accreditation and that the accreditation team would be visiting by third quarter of the year.

“Towards the accreditation, it is worthy to inform the congregation that the State Government has released the sum of N542 million out of the N750 million promised for infrastructure and manpower development.

“The polytechnic, on its parts, has conducted mock accreditation in the affected programmes and departments of the institution ahead of the main accreditation,” he said.

On staff development, Sogunro noted that 129 staff members were promoted in 2014/2015 while 250 were promoted in the 2015/2016 exercise.

While speaking in an interview with Native Magazine, Nigerian Afropop artiste, David Adeleke popularly known as Davido, disclosed that he had to stop recording the type of songs Sony Music wanted because they did not resonate with him.

Commenting on his 2016 extended playlist, ‘Son of Mercy’ which was released by Sony, the singer said he did not pick the songs that made the EP. He rubbished the EP and noted that he recorded it at a time when he was struggling for hit records.

He said:-

“Nah, the EP was s**t. The songs were not picked by me, I wasn’t in the right place.

“I knew myself. I was like, ‘this is not Davido’. My career has always been on fire at all times, [‘till then] there was never a time that I didn’t have a hit out, and that time I didn’t have a hit.

A 14 year old teenage girl was forced to have sex with more than 1000 men over two years at a motel in Philadelphia, a lawsuit claims.
The girl was forced into “sex slavery” with men up to four times her age at the Roosevelt Inn in the north-east of the city, her lawyer has claimed.

The teenager, who was just 14 when the alleged abuse began, is suing the motel, its manager and the company that owns it.

The now 17-year-old girl claims she was paid $50 to have sex with several hundred men at the motel after being forced into prostitution in 2013, CBS Philadelphia reported.

The motel is alleged to have provided rooms for human traffickers, but Patel, 72, denied any knowledge of this.The lawsuit – filed against the Roosevelt Inn, its parent company UFVS Management Company and the motel manager Yagna Patel – claims the alleged ordeal continued into 2014.

The lawsuit claims the defendants ‘knew or had constructive knowledge’ that the girl was “being sexually exploited”.

Traffickers are alleged to have advertised sex with the girl online, before encouraging men to come to the motel after agreeing a price over the phone.

When they arrived, a hotel clerk would show them to the girl’s room, according to the lawsuit, which names a staff member, ‘Abdul’, who was supposedly aware of the abuse.

The lawsuit claims that motel workers should have noticed tell-tale signs of abuse, such as the room allegedly regularly containing used condoms.

It also claims that the room “frequently smelled of marijuana” and that men and minors were allegedly seen leaving it.

The girl was allegedly treated “aggressively” and would have seemed scared, court documents claim, adding that she often “dressed in a sexually explicit manner”.

“This child was forced into sex slavery, paid to do things with men double, triple, quadruple her age,” her attorney Nadeem Bezar said.

Fellow lawyer Tom Kline added: “You have to be blind deaf and dumb not to know that over 100 men are showing up over a period of a couple days.

“You have a cleaning crew that comes into the room and often times finds boxes or waste cans full of used condoms. This is about as open and obvious as it gets.

“You can’t have a line of johns out the front door and around the room waiting without them knowing the linen service was extraordinary.

The front desk would direct the traffic to the room of this child.”

The teenager, who is in therapy, is suing for $50,000 in compensation.

Patel claimed he was unaware of the abuse or the lawsuit and said: “We just rent the room and that’s all we can do.”
