General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) and Visitor to Redeemer’s University, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has appointed Pastor Ezekiel Odeyemi, who is the church Continental Overseer; West Coast and Central Africa, to lead the newly inaugurated governing council of the university.

He takes over from Pastor Tokunbo Adesanya, whose tenure expired on August 15, 2021, having served meritoriously for eight years.

Pastor Odeyemi, who holds several positions of responsibilities within the global hierarchy of the RCCG, is also the Assistant General Overseer (Education and Training) and the Vice President (Evangelism) for Christ Redeemer’s Ministries, an arm of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed trending pictures and videos in circulation showing dumping of dead bodies into mass graves, purported to be bodies of people killed in military operations.

The Director, Defence Information, Maj-Gen. Benjamin Sawyerr, dismissed the pictures and videos in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

Sawyer said that a picture with the caption, “Alhamdulillah, Zamfara Must Secure” and several other viral gory pictures and videos were purported to have emanated from the ongoing military operations in the North-West and North-Central parts of the country.

According to him, it is pertinent to state that the allegation is false and malicious and has no link whatsoever with the operations being conducted by troops of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN).

“However, it is true that the AFN are presently conducting successful military operations against bandits and kidnappers in line with their constitutional roles.

“These operations are conducted in strict compliance with the rules of armed conflicts, utmost professional manner, strict adherence to rules of engagement and respect for fundamental human rights and dignity.

“The viral pictures being circulated have nothing in common with the ongoing operations.

“This callous action of linking ongoing operations with falsehood is deliberate and thus seeks to tarnish the good image and reputation of the AFN,” he said.

Sawyerr stated that the military had been carrying out periodic media briefings where pictures of the operations were usually displayed to complement achievements in the ongoing operations.

He urge the public to disregard the gory pictures, assuring that the military would continue to perform its constitutional mandate of ensuring that the nation remained safe and peaceful for all law abiding citizens.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU ) has called on the National Assembly to pass the Bill to amend the National Universities Commission Act to address the proliferation of state universities.

The coordinator of the Kano Zone of the Union , Prof . Abdulkadir Muhammad made the call at a press conference held at Bayero University Kano, on Friday.

Muhammad, who called for the passage of the bill, also called on the visitors of the Universities to live up to their responsibilities.

“We are calling on the national assembly to , as a matter of urgency , consider and pass the Bill. Due to bad governance and underfunding, our state-owned universities may soon collapse beyond redemption.

“Visitors of state universities had turned establishment of state universities into projects for appeasing electorates in their senatorial and state constituencies, while neglecting the existing state universities.

“Besides non funding of capital projects , most state governors have also failed in the primary responsibility of regular payment of staff salaries in their universities,” he added.

The coordinator said that the association also rejected the charging of exorbitant tuition fees in the state universities because it places university education beyond the reach of common Nigerians.

On the issue of University Transparency and Accountability Solution ( UTAS ), he explained that end user acceptability test had been completed and that the union was waiting for the subsequent deployment of UTAS in the management of payroll and personnel systems of the federal universities.

The association also urged the Federal Government to sign and implement the draft ASUU/FGN renegotiated agreement of May , 2021, in addition to the release of the first tranche of the N30 billion fund for the revitalization of public universities.

“The government should also release N25 billion Earned Academic Allowance.

“ We also urge the federal government to immediately remit withheld check-off dues to the branches of the withheld and amputated salaries/allowances and third party deductions.,” he added.

The coordinator said that the Union would always deploy appropriate measures to salvage the Nigerian university system from rot and decay.

He said that the union firmly believes in the use of qualitative education to liberate and transform Nigeria from its current state of underdevelopment.

The Nigeria Customs Service says it has intercepted smuggled arms and ammunition, military uniforms, cocaine and thousands of bottles of codeine.

Abdullahi Musa, the area comptroller of the Tin Can Island command, disclosed this on Thursday.

“The command in conjunction with NDLEA also seized 43.110kg of cocaine, military uniforms, used clothes, cartons of expired chloroquine injections, etc., with a duty paid value of N93,829,829,” said Mr Musa.

“Recently, the command discovered a pistol with its magazine concealed in a compartment of an imported vehicle among others.”

He explained that the NCS had rejigged its anti-smuggling operations through intelligence sharing with other security agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the Standard Organisation of Nigeria.

The area comptroller revealed that on Wednesday, the command seized a container of “150 arms and ammunition and 600,000 bottles of Barcadine brand of codeine among others.”

He disclosed this at a media conference in Lagos.

“In the period under review January 1 to September 9, Tinc Can Island Port (TCIP) command’s operation aligned with the statutory obligations of the NCS which include revenue generation, trade facilitation and protection of national borders,” Mr Musa stated. “To achieve our strategies goals, the TCIP management team devised and implemented strategies that enhanced the command’s ability to mitigate threats of non-compliance as well as the challenges of inadequate logistics and infrastructure at the ports hitherto.”

Regarding export, he disclosed that the command’s January to August returns on Nigeria Export Proceed for commercial exports indicated 1,497,897.1 metric tonnes of goods with a free on board value of N82.5 billion (151.855.9 metric tonnes with an FOB value of N78.46 billion were exported in 2020).

According to him, the export was agricultural products and manufactured goods.

THE Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has revealed that tertiary institutions were unable to use about 405,256 admission quota available to them during the 2020 admissions, despite the fact that many Unified Tertiary
Matriculation Examination (UTME) candidates are still not admitted.

JAMB registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, speaking during his presentation at the 2021 UTME admission policy meeting in Abuja, disclosed that out of the total 925,762 of admission quota, only 551,553 candidates were admitted leaving 405,256 of their carrying capacity unfilled.

He, however, attributed this to several factors, including rigidity on the part of both candidates and institutions, where a candidate insists on a particular course like medicine, and the institution on the other hand, insisting on a particular subject combination for a course, wrong O’ Level subject combination, low post UTME screening score, UTME combination deficiency, non-acceptance of offer, duplication of application, absence from post UTME screening, mismatch of catchment institutions and no O’ Level – trial candidates.

Findings also indicated that many private tertiary institutions are under-subscribed because of high tuition fees , as such unable to fill their admission quota.

The JAMB registrar further disclosed that about 2.1 million UTME and Direct Entry (DE) candidates who took part in the 2020 admission exercise had applied to tertiary institutions across the country, including universities, polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges of education.

He said out of this figure, only 1,112,057 candidates scored 140 and above and also made five O’ level credit passes in English and Mathematics.

He added that a total of 925,762 quota was allocated for admissions across the nation’s tertiary institutions during the year, but a total of 405,256 spaces remained unused as of August 31.

The registrar said before the end of the 2020 admission process on October 29, 2021, the examination body hopes the figure of admitted candidates would have increased to about 600,000.

In the same vein, Oloyede disclosed that out of the 4,948 candidates who scored 300 and above, only 3,492 gained admissions into higher institutions, leaving out a total of 1,456 stranded.

Meanwhile, about 52, 323 candidates scored between 250 and 299 in the same examination, out of which 22,580 candidates were also not admitted while some 193,661 candidates out of 347,469 who scored between 200 and 249 were not offered admission.

The 2020 figure of candidates who scored 300 and above but could not gain admission indicated a significant increase from that of 2019 which is about 679 candidates.

The Federal Road Safety Corps says it is illegal to receive or make telephone calls while driving, regardless of any wireless gadget used for such communication.

The FRSC also said drivers who make or receive calls behind the wheels with AirPods, EarPods or any form wired or wireless earphones and handsfree mode risk six months in jail.

FRSC Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, in an interview with Saturday PUNCH, said driving requires total concentration and road users should not take any risk on their lives.

He said it is illegal to make calls or receive same while driving, according to the National Road Traffic Regulations, 2012.

Kazeem said, “It is illegal. Driving entails 100 per cent concentration so you cannot be distracted. It is there in the regulation.

“It is clear from the provisions of Reg 166 (1) that it is illegal to make phone call using EarPods earphone or whatever means.

“Anything that will distract you while driving must be avoided. When we do public enlightenment, we even discourage drivers talking to passengers which could cause distraction.

“The law may not make it an offence but at the same time, it can distract you, even changing your cassette (while driving) can distract you and result to accident.”

Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has warned that it would excommunicate Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, if he withdraws from the ban on open grazing initiated by the Southern Governors’ Forum.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide had warned the Governor of Imo state on the dangers of withdrawal from the ban on open grazing initiated by the Forum of Southern Governors, as the Imo Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma had attracted scourge of hatred, plagues, and curses on his government,” the group said in a statement signed by its secretary-general, Mazi Okechukwu.

Governors of the 17 southern states had pronounced a ban on open grazing in the region at their meeting in Asaba in May. At a follow up meeting on the issue in Lagos, the governors set a September deadline for all the states in the region to pass a law prohibiting open grazing.

Ohanaeze said that Mr Uzodinma’s absence from meetings of the Southern Governors’ Forum which held in Lagos and Asaba, raises suspicion of what they described as “an attempt to ambush the resolutions of southern governors.”

“Our suspicion had been reinforced with the continued absence of Governor Hope Uzodinma in the meetings of southern governors in Asaba and Lagos, which was intentional and premeditated to ambush the resolutions of the southern governors, and he will never escape the venom of Ndigbo, as he will surely taste the retribution of God and wrath of the people as a confirmed saboteur and this will serve as a warning to any Igbo governor that will follow such decision will never escape the malevolence and venomous action of the the people,” the statement added.

The group further alleged that Mr Uzodinma has become a tool in the hands of detractors who seek to “destabilise southern Nigeria” and warned that he must show repentance and rescind the decision to pull out from the ban on open grazing from September 1, 2021.

“Ohanaeze Ndigbo admonished Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodinma to show repentance and rescind the decision to pull out from the ban on open grazing from 1st september 2021, he cannot afford to face the consequences of this decision, Uzodinma is now the tools our detractors are using to destrablize Southern Nigeria, but if he continues, he will be excommunicated from any Igbo gathering and ceremonies from 1st september 2021,” the statement concluded.

Mr Uzodinma on Wednesday said he was pulling out of the agreement with southern governors, declaring that there was no law banning open grazing in Imo.

“I don’t have any law in Imo State for anti-grazing. But what we have done is that we are regulating grazing activities in Imo State under a partnership between our farmers and herders,” Mr Uzodinma asserted.

Rivers State governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has signed the Open Grazing Prohibition Bill and the Value Added Tax (VAT) Collection Bill as well as the Residents Registration Agency and the Naming and Renaming of Infrastructure Bills into law.

The Rivers State House of Assembly recently passed the four bills into law.

Speaking at the ceremony in Government House, Port Harcourt, Wike stated that it was inimical to development and peace, for any state to condone opening grazing of cattle.

The governor said cattle rearing were agricultural business and the law, which has specified ranching, was so intended in order to stem clash between herdsmen who go to destroy farmland, crops, and having problems with farmers that lead to fighting and killing of themselves.

He said, “It is no longer a story. All of us know what our people have suffered in terms of this open grazing. Today all Nigerians have come to accept the reality that open grazing is no longer fashionable. Even our brothers in the north have agreed that it is no longer fashionable.”

Wike insisted that the judgement of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt had sufficiently addressed the illegality perpetrated by the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS) on behalf of the federal government in the collection of VAT in states.

The governor stated that when agencies of the federal government are allowed to illegally demand and collect taxes meant for states to collect, they strangulate the states financially and turn them to be beggars.

He said Rivers State is standing on the part of history by challenging the illegality of the federal government through the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS).

“Of course, we are all aware that the states have already been strangulated. Most states depend on allocation from federation account. States have been turned to beggars. Hardly will any day pass that you won’t see one state or the other going to Abuja to beg for one fund or the other,” he said.

Wike stated that no campaign of calumny or blackmail on the part of FIRS would make what is illegal to become legal. He dismissed FIRS’ propaganda that 30 states will suffer if some states are allowed to collect VAT.

The governor further stated that the concerns should be on establishing whose duty is it to collect VAT and the constitutionality of such position before talking about who is going to suffer or not.

He said, “In this (Rivers) state, we awarded contract to companies and within the last month we paid over N30billion to the contractors and 7.5% will not be deducted from that and to be given to FIRS.

“Now, look at 7.5% of N30billion of contracts we awarded to companies in Rivers State, you will be talking about almost N3billion only from that source. Now, at the end of the month, Rivers State government has never received more than N2billion from VAT.”

Speaking further, Wike said there are plans already for FIRS to introduce road tax and this is likely to take away more duties from the states, and further emasculate them financially.

The governor said, “Which are the roads? Are they the roads the state government is paying for or the roads federal government has constructed? So, at the end of the day, they have taken over the functions of the state government and the state is left with nothing.”

He stated that the states have been so emasculated that they could barely survive without monthly revenue received from Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC).

Wike further stated that the over bearing attitude of the federal government, impinges on attaining financial autonomy for the legislature and the judiciary, since the states are not allowed to collect due revenues as specified by the country’s constitution.

The governor said with the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) passed and signed into law, there shall be unbundling of NNPC, which means that NNPC remittance to the federation account will be less, requiring every state to look inwards on how to survive.

He thanked the state lawmakers for their courage to have given the bill speedy passage and assured that every area that the law allows the state to collect revenue will be maximised for the survival of the state.

On his part, the speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Ikuinyi-Owaji Ibani described the collection of VAT by FIRS as the worst form of retrogressive tax in any tax regime.

He commended the governor and the state government for challenging the constitutionality of FIRS collection of VAT in states. According to him, the signing of the VAT law will ensure that Rivers’ people are not plunged into extreme poverty.

He said that Nigeria is the only country professing federalism but with a unitary constitution, which is the very opposite of what federalism stands for.

Speaking further, he said the law banning open grazing in Rivers State would serve as both cure to the symptom and the disease of herders and farmers bloody conflicts.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have nabbed an Italy-bound woman, Mrs. Nnadi Nora Chinyere, with 100 wraps of heroin and two parcels of the same substance at the departure hall of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, MMIA, Ikeja, Lagos.

Mrs. Nnadi was arrested on Tuesday, August 3, during the outward clearance of passengers on a Qatar Airways flight to Florentine, Italy.

A statement by Femi Babafemi, Director, Media & Advocacy said, “The drugs found on her were concealed in five containers of hair relaxer cream.”

In the same vein, on Thursday, August 12, operatives of the MMIA Command of the Agency intercepted a United Kingdom-bound consignment of illicit drugs at the NAHCO export shed of the airport.


Further investigation reveals the consignment contains 66.600kg of cannabis sativa; 1.600kg heroin and 1.450kg of cocaine with a combined weight of 69.65kilograms, all concealed inside cosmetics.

Earlier on Thursday, August 5, narcotics officers on routine patrol intercepted another consignment of 25.8 kilogrammes of cocaine and cannabis concealed inside foodstuffs going to London, UK at NAHCO export warehouse.

When the export package was opened and examined, 2.3kg of cocaine and 23.5kg of compressed cannabis were discovered inside.

During a patrol operation along Akure-Owo Road, a team of operatives from Owo Area command of the Agency equally intercepted a bus from Lagos en route Owo to Ibilo, Kogi state on August 7.

Recovered from the vehicle include six parcels of skunk weighing 3.6kg; 30 pinches of crack cocaine weighing 87grams and six sachets of Arizona weighing 265grams.

Two suspects have been arrested in connection to the drug trafficking.

Meanwhile, on Friday, August 13, Benue state command of the agency arrested an interstate trafficker, Eze Victor Ezenwanne at Apir-Aliade road, Makurdi with 65.436kilogrammes of diazepam tablets.

The same day, a suspected fake soldier, Adeyemi Segun Olamide was arrested in Maiduguri, Borno state with 650grams of skunk, while a Nigerian Army ex-staff sergeant, Muffat Ekong and one Frank Iredia Obamwonyi were arrested on Wednesday, August 11, with 286.3kilograms of cannabis at Ogwashi Uku, Delta state on their way to Enugu State.

Chairman/Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) has commended the officers and men of the MMIA command as well as their Ondo, Borno, Benue and Delta state counterparts for the huge seizures and arrests.

He charged them and other commands to sustain the current momentum, assuring them that President Muhammadu Buhari recognises their efforts and would continue to motivate them to do more.
