POLICE operatives attached to Bomadi Divisional Patrol team, on October 1, arrested a cyclist with 340 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition concealed inside garri in Delta State.

The suspect, Solomon Ebe, 37, from Tuomo community in Burutu Local Government Area of the state, was apprehended along Bomadi/ Tuomo road during a stop-and-search operation.

In the same vein, a housewife, Ejiro Efemijoghor, at the wee hours of last Wednesday, was caught with one English double barrel gun and 26 live cartridges.

The woman, who claimed the weapons belonged to her husband, was arrested by police operatives attached to the Command’s raider squad during a raid at Utuloho Street, Ozoro.

The swift response of operatives from A Division, according to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, led to the arrest of 22-year-old Efe David after he allegedly jumped down from the tricycle.

PoliticsAppeal Court To Rule On VAT Collection Dispute 2 Pm Today by limcar(op): 10:55am On Sep 30, 2021
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has scheduled an application by Lagos State to be made a respondent in the appeal filed by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for ruling at 2 pm today.

A cause list seen by DAILY POST at the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal indicated that a three-man panel of the court, led by Justice Hamma Tsanami, will deliver the ruling.

The appeal by the FIRS is against the August 9, 2021 judgment by Justice Steven Pam of the Federal High Court in Port-Harcourt, Rivers State, voiding the Value Added Tax (VAT) Act and holding the states could collect VAT.

A three-man panel, led by Justice Haruna Simon Tsanami, after listening to arguments by lawyers to parties on September 16, had said they would be informed when the ruling was ready.

In arguing Lagos’ application, the state’s Attorney General, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN) said his client was a necessary party as it would be affected by the outcome of the case.

Lawyer to Rivers State, Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), agreed with Onigbanjo and urged the court to join Lagos, while lawyers to FIRS and the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Mahmud Magaji (SAN) and Tijani Gazali (SAN), argued otherwise and prayed the court not to join Lagos.

PoliticsPolice To Recruit 20,000 Junior Officers Soon - IGP by limcar(op): 1:25pm On Sep 29, 2021
The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, says the Nigeria Police will soon begin the recruitment of 20, 000 junior police officers.

The IGP gave the hint on Tuesday evening when he paid a working visit to Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State at the State Secretariat, Agodi in Ibadan.

Baba informed the governor that Nigeria Police has every intention to increase its strength in terms of junior police officers ’ recruitment.

He said it had overcome all the issues that had been delaying the recruitment process, adding that President Muhammadu Buhari has given approval for the recruitment.

He assured the state government that every local government area would benefit from the recruitment, saying that the recruited officers would serve in their respective local government areas after training.

The IGP said that the recruitment exercise would not only expand the capacity of the force in combating crime, but also emboldened its community policing strategy.

Baba said that his working visit was to interact with the police personnel to boost their morale after the EndSARS protest.

He said the visit was to also engage some other stakeholders on the issue of community policing, which , according to him, is an adopted strategy policing in Nigeria.

“ We have not just started now; it has started as far back as 2004, but it has not been effectively used by both government and members of the public.

He implored the governor to continue supporting and assisting the police.

Responding, Makinde informed the IGP that the Police Command in Oyo State had been trying its best, cooperating with the people of the state and all other security agencies.

The governor said that the police were hostile when Amotekun was established, “because they felt that Amotekun came on board to take up their jobs and responsibilities.

“But over these few months, with the leadership of the police in the state, we have serious cooperation and the inter -agency rivalry has been reduced to the barest minimum in the state.

“We also know that this is a challenging period for the country, the resources are dwindling , but we have challenged all over, especially the insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West , kidnapping in the South and ethnic tension everywhere.

“So, we have to keep supporting the efforts of the Nigeria Police Force,” he said.

The governor used the opportunity of the visit to request for the establishment of another Mobile Force Squadron in Oyo Town, promising that his government would provide the basic infrastructure for its take-off.

He said the 72 Squadron in Ago-Are, which was approved by the former IGP, was assisting in addressing security challenges in Oke -Ogun axis of the state.

PoliticsFashola: Fg’s 795 Ongoing Projects Will Lift Millions Out Of Poverty by limcar(op): 8:45am On Sep 24, 2021
The Minister of Works and Housing, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, yesterday said the ongoing 895 contracts and 795 infrastructural projects nationwide were part of President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s plan to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty.

Speaking at the 27th meeting of the National Council on Works and Housing, taking place in Bauchi State, the minister argued that embarking on building massive infrastructure remained the quickest way to create wealth worldwide.

He maintained that nations that are richer than Nigeria have more infrastructure than the country, stressing that in order to bridge the gap there must be deliberate investment plan.

He said no nation would be able to grow bigger than its stock of infrastructure.

“When President Buhari committed on June 12, 2019, to taking 100 million people out of poverty in 10 years, his vision was not a federal government vision, but a national one, which has started with the work being undertaken in all states and FCT and to which the federal government is contributing through infrastructure.

“Currently, the federal government is executing 895 contracts in 795 projects spanning over 13,000 km of roads and bridges nationwide.

“Across all of these, engineers, geologists, surveyors, lawyers, bankers, suppliers, artisans and labourers are involved in an ecosystem of enterprise from which they earn a daily, weekly or other periodic income.

“But that is only part of the story, the employment. The other parts include improved asset value, because everywhere a new road or bridge is built, the land value appreciates by up to 30 per cent creating enormous capital gain,” he explained.

Aside that, he noted tat on completion, journeys that used to take days would take only a few hours, positing that in the definition of poverty, well-being, efficiency and the lack of access, are critical factors.

Speaking on the theme: “Infrastructure Delivery, the Maintenance Economy and National Prosperity,” Fashola noted that since the implementation of the Marshall plan in 1948, after the Second World War, it had become clear to any serious-minded economist or politician that infrastructure provision was critical to development. The minister stressed that with proper maintenance, the life of the infrastructure would be preserved, value for the money spent would be obtained, describing it as a critical contributor and driver of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in many economies around the world.

“Available data shows that in the ‘built industry’, only about 30 per cent of the manpower is employable by design and construction which lasts until the project is completed; while the remaining 70 per cent is employed in the process of operation and maintenance of the infrastructure,” he added.

He posited that in nine facilities that were assessed by the ministry, the conditions of fittings such as fans, air conditioners, light fittings, toilets and wash hand basins, out of 41,800 installations, 12,459, representing 29.8 per cent was found not to be functioning.

“Currently, we are undertaking maintenance works on 41 bridges that have employed 1,157 people directly and created 3,309 indirect jobs and we have facility management contracts for 25 federal secretariats across Nigeria after we completed renovation works. Each facility manager employs at least 40 people,” he added.

Meanwhile, the minister has called on the people affected by the ongoing road construction project in Nasarawa and Benue states to embrace dialogue in resolving issues related to compensation rather than recourse to agitations.

The former Lagos state governor, who made the call during his inspection tour of the ongoing “dualisation” of the 221 kilometres Keffi – Akwanga-Lafia – Makurdi Road, insisted that agitations do not solve problems.

He said the federal government was closely working with the two states to resolve the issues, pointing out that efforts were being made to ensure that the real beneficiaries get the compensation and not middlemen.

The minister explained that funding for the project was secured through a China EXIM loan, adding that the decision to borrow the fund for the project was taken before the administration of Buhari.

“The decision to borrow this money was taken before our administration. So we just completed the process that had been started, a process that we own because this is money borrowed for investment to improve people’s lives,” he said.

The minister who was later joined by the Governor of Nasarawa State, Mr. Abdullahi Sule, also inspected the National Housing Programme (NHP) and Federal Secretariat Complex in the state capital, Lafia.

PoliticsBoko Haram Sponsors Have Been Identified, Detained – Malami Reveals by limcar(op): 8:17pm On Sep 23, 2021
The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami on Thursday revealed that the Federal Government has succeeded in identifying and detaining the Boko Haram Sponsors in Nigeria.

Malami made this known while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in New York City.

Recall that Malami had in May announced that the Nigerian government was about to begin the prosecution of about 400 suspected Boko Haram sponsors and was profiling some high-profile Nigerians strongly suspected to be financing terrorism for prosecution.

The delay in their prosecution and unveiling of the suspects have, however, been criticised in certain quarters, but Malami assured the Federal Government was determined to take stringent measures to counter insurgency in the country.

Speaking with the newsmen on Thursday, Malami assured the Buhari administration was determined to take stringent measures to counter-insurgency.

“We have succeeded in identifying those that are responsible for funding terrorists. We have blocked the leakages associated with the funding and embarking on an aggressive investigation that is indeed impacting positively in terms of the fight against terrorism.

“Investigation is ongoing and for the purpose of investigation, I wouldn’t like to be pre-emptive in terms of making disclosures that would have the effect of undermining the successes we are recording.

“One thing I can tell you for sure is that whatever we do in terms of detention and in terms of arrest is indeed backed by judicial process.

“We have indeed obtained a legitimate court order taking into consideration what we have presented before the court; the court eventually exercised its discretion in terms of granting orders that we can have them in custody,” he said.

PoliticsCui Jianchin Mulls Establishment Of Chinese Banks In Nigeria by limcar(op): 7:26am On Sep 22, 2021
The Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Cui Jianchin, says he is in talks with Chinese-owned banks to establish operations in Nigeria.

This, the envoy said, is to boost Nigeria’s economy and expand trade relations between the two nations.

Cui made this known on Tuesday in Abuja while addressing Journalists during the commemoration of the 2021 Chinese Moon Festival and China-Nigeria Cultural week.

According the Cui, the establishment of Chinese Banks in Nigeria will also be one of the key areas of discussion during the China-Nigeria Binational Committee meeting, which he is also pushing for the establishment.

He said that an efficient financial institution was a key driver to achieving a strong economy, one Nigeria can learn from China’s experience.

“Before my departure from Beijing to Abuja, I talked to several banks in China. When you list the World’s 10 big banks, six are in China.

“The Banking sector is very important, because without money, we cannot build our industries.

“What I am thinking here is best to talk to the governor of Central Bank and how we can allow the Chinese Banks to run office here and now, they are doing the feasibility studies on that.

“I am working hard that in the Bi-national meeting, I hope we can make a big decision and give a big push to let the banking industry and insurance industry, because financial integration and institutions are key.

“If you go to China, you will find our banking industry is very powerful, not only for business, but change in the way of life.

“Because of the COVID-19, the Banking Industry is a little hesitant, but I told them Nigeria has a lot of human resources and as long as we work together, we can do big things.

“And that is why it is important to invest in the banking industry, to solve this problem,” Cui said.

Extolling the extant China-Nigeria trade relations, Cui noted that the volume of trade between China and Nigeria is nearly 20 billion US Dollars, with an increase from 2020’s 19.2 billion dollars.

PoliticsNigerian Customs To Deploy Drones At Seme Border by limcar(op): 7:25pm On Sep 20, 2021
The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, says it will soon deploy drones at Seme for effective patrol in checking smuggling activities in the border area.

NCS Zone A Coordinator, Modupe Aremu, an Assistant Comptroller General, ACG, of Customs, disclosed this on Monday during a working visit to Seme Border Area Command.

According to her, border management surveillance will be done electronically through the use of drones to ensure that there will be an area overview of what is happening.

“Seme command visit is the end of my tour in Zone A and I must commend all the commands, they account for over 80 per cent revenue collection by the NCS and so they should keep up the good work.

“With the tour of all commands, I have seen that all the officers are doing well but they can still do better. And I am telling them that they should be expecting impromptu visits from the Zonal Coordinator, so they should not relax on the job.

“Also, e-customs’ N300 billion contract that is end-to-end automation that is about to kick-off is about Information and Communication Technology connectivity; when it comes on board, we are going to have electronic signature, drones patrolling the border,” she said.

She noted that the service was trying to minimize person to person contact to reduce human interaction and make the work faster and more efficient.

Mrs Aremu expressed satisfaction with the joint border post buildings that was commissioned on Oct. 23, 2018, noting that it ushered in an era of coordinated border management.

“This is one-stop-shop and from what the comptroller has shown me, it is what is practiced abroad; this is really commendable that what we see when we travel, we have it here in Nigeria,” she said.

She urged Seme Customs to keep abreast of all the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, protocols in order to understand what was happening.

On enforcement activities, she urged the command to keep pushing as the nation at this point in time needed the service to properly secure its borders.

She expressed the hope that the scanner at the border would start functioning to help simplify processes as much as possible.

She urged the command to ensure proper compilation of case files and prosecution of arrested suspects to show the seriousness of the service in fighting smuggling.

Earlier, Seme Customs Comptroller, Bello Jibo, noted that enforcement activities were not affected by the border closure as the command made remarkable interception of 1244 suspected smuggled goods with a duty paid value of over N856 million.

He noted that despite unfriendly economic policies imposed on goods transiting through Benin Republic, the command was able to collect about N719 million as revenue and processed export volume of 635,149.23 metric tons with free on board value of N15.5 billion.

“The command has a very good understanding with host community and in cementing this relationship, the command built and handed over a modern toilet facility to the Badagry West Development Area and partnered with an NGO to equip the Badagry United Football Club.

“Some projects undergoing work or completed in the command are: 16 classrooms for primary school, construction of 30-man rank and file quarters and others.

“The challenges faced has to do with ICT interconnectivity at the Joint Border Patrol, signing of bilateral agreement, connection of the barracks to the national grid and inadequate junior staff,” he said

PoliticsEntry Age Limit: Lagos Debunks Viral Report On Social Media by limcar(op): 7:43pm On Sep 18, 2021
The Lagos State Ministry of Education has debunked a social media report alleging that the State Government will, from next academic session, enforce the entry age of 12 years for pupils seeking admission into Junior Secondary School (JSS1) in a bid to deter underage registration.

A statement signed by the Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Folasade Adefisayo, noted that the unsigned and undated document about the age limit for Junior Secondary School entrants had earlier been denounced in Y2020 when it was first circulated.

The Commissioner maintained that such statement was never issued by the State Government, stressing that what was wrongly published and circulated was not a policy statement, but an internal memorandum containing suggestions and a summary of discussions that was drafted after a consultative meeting.

She explained that the said meeting was held with relevant stakeholders in the Education Sector in Y2020 on how to implement the National Policy on Education in the State, which was clearly stated in a press release issued by the Ministry in April, 2020.

Describing the perpetrators of the social media report as saboteurs, Mrs. Adefisayo urged the general public to ignore the viral statement and rest assured that the Ministry will always involve stakeholders in policy decisions and implementation.

PoliticsGbenga Daniel Speaks On Contesting For Senate by limcar(op): 2:27pm On Sep 18, 2021
A former Governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniel has expressed his interest to run for Senate in the 2023 elections.

Daniel who dumped the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress in February confirmed on Friday that he would contest for Ogun East Senatorial poll in 2023.

The former Governor while speaking at a gathering in Sagamu on Friday said he has been under pressure to run for “national offices in 2023.”

He stated this at the Continuous Political Education Programme of POLA with the Theme, “Understanding Democracy, Quality Representation and Political Management.”

Daniel also lamented about the poor representation at the National Assembly, especially from the South West.

He said, “I have read the news and watched videos from diverse groups and individuals who have been calling on me to run for some National offices in 2023; while this is neither the time nor the occasion to react to such clamour, I agree mostly with their reasons.

“The position that only those with the required capacity should be allowed to make laws and sanction policies that affect the lives of the citizens cannot be over-emphasised not just in Ogun State but the entire country.

“The National Assembly plays a vital role in our democracy and requires the best of vibrant intellectuals our nation has to offer.

“Laws made must be in tandem with the goals to create a better society for the people, one not just rooted in the ideals of good governance, but forged with the mindset of the advancement of the present inventions and future innovations.”
