BusinessCBN Introduces ₦500 Million Grant For Graduates, Undergraduates by limcar(op): 7:23am On Oct 21, 2021
In a bid to reduce unemployment, the Central Bank of Nigeria has developed the Tertiary Institutions Entrepreneurship Scheme (TIES), in partnership with Nigerian polytechnics and universities to harness the potential of graduate entrepreneurs (gradpreneurs) in Nigeria.

This was disclosed by the Central Bank of Nigeria in a circular, titled ‘Guidelines for the implementation of tertiary institutions entrepreneurship scheme’, dated October 2021.

The apex bank stated that the goal of the TIES is to enhance access to finance to undergraduates and graduates of polytechnics and universities in Nigeria with innovative entrepreneurial and technological ideas.

What the CBN is saying

The apex bank stated that the development of TIES was to address the trend of graduates seeking whitecollar jobs and turn their attention to the creation of jobs.

CBN stated that “the Scheme is designed to create a paradigm shift among undergraduates and graduates from the pursuit of white-collar jobs to a culture of entrepreneurship development for economic development and job creation.”

Regarding the grant, the CBN would distribute N500million among the top 5 tertiary institutions with the best pitch.

CBN said, “Five top Nigerian polytechnics and universities with the best entrepreneurial pitches/ideas shall be awarded as follows: first place – N150m; second place – N120m; third place – N100m; fourth place – N80m; and fifth place – N50m,”

The apex bank stated that it, ”shall constitute a Body of Experts (BoE) from the private and public sector for the biennial regional and national entrepreneurship competitions to evaluate entrepreneurial and technological innovations submitted by Nigerian polytechnics and universities. The Body of Experts (BoE) shall recommend projects with high potential and transformational impact for the grant award.”

Key highlights of the guideline
Projects financed under the Scheme shall be monitored by independent monitors jointly engaged by the CBN and PFI

The Scheme would be operated for 10 years in the first instance (not exceeding 31st December 2031) depending on the complexity of the project.

Interest payment and principal repayment should be made on a monthly or quarterly basis by the obligor depending on the established cash flow cycle and in line with the approved repayment schedule.

Eligibility criteria for participation

Applicants under the Scheme shall be graduates of Nigerian polytechnics and universities with:

i. First-degree certificate (BSc/HND/ or it is equivalent);

ii. National Youth Service Certificate (NYSC) discharge or
exemption certificate;

iii. Certificate of Participation issued by polytechnics and universities evidencing entrepreneurship training; and

iv. Not more than 7 years post-NYSC.

PoliticsThere Is No Plan To Bring SARS Back, Says IGP by limcar(op): 5:56pm On Oct 08, 2021
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Usman Alkali Baba, says contrary to reports making the rounds, there is no plan to reinstate the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad into the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

According to a statement by police spokesman, CP Frank Mba, the IGP assured Nigerians that reports suggesting that SARS is to be restored should be treated as false news.

IGP Alkali Baba further emphasized that SARS is gone for good and will not resurrect under any guise whatsoever.

He noted that the Force has since reorganized its operational structure to fill the vacuum created by the disbandment of SARS.

“Currently, the leadership of the Force is focused on efforts at deepening reforms within the Police, as one that will be more effective, efficient, technology-driven, humane, and Rule of Law-compliant,” the statement partly read.

The police boss called on members of the public to disregard the said report, stressing that it is absolutely false and deliberately intended to misinform members of the public.

BusinessNigerian Fintechs Attracts $1bn Investments In 6 Years by limcar(op): 3:34pm On Oct 06, 2021
The Nigerian financial technology providers, fintechs, have attracted at least $1 billion in investments in six years.

This figure was disclosed at the 31st Seminar for Finance Correspondents & Business Editors holding in Enugu.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, said at the seminar that the industry attracted the investment of about $500 million in firms run by Nigerian founders, between 2015 and 2020, based on the high level of confidence in Nigeria’s payment system, Daily Trust reported.

Mr Akeem Olujinmi Lawal, the Divisional Chief Executive Officer, Payments Processing Division, Interswitch Group, corroborating what the CBN Governor said, disclosed that an additional $500 million had crept in between 2020 to date, raising the figures to $1 billion.

Mr Emefiele, who was represented by the Deputy CBN Governor, Corporate Services, Mr Edward L. Adamu, said the rise in Fintechs is also deepening financial inclusion even though he said the access is not robust enough.

He said: “In spite of these gains, about 36 per cent of adult Nigerians still do not have access to financial services.

“Improving access to finance for individuals and businesses through digital channels can help to improve financial inclusion, lower the cost of transactions, and increase the flow of credit to businesses.”

He also said the e-naira would impact the financial inclusion numbers.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria decided to introduce a central bank digital currency, the eNaira, which would help in attaining our goals of fostering greater inclusion using digital channels, supporting cross border payments for businesses and firms as well as providing a reliable channel for remittances inflows into the country,” he said.

He added; “with the deployment of the eNaira, Nigerians in remote areas can conduct financial activities using their digital as well as features on phone devices.

“Partnering with our stakeholders in the financial industry, I believe that more Nigerians will be financially included.”

The CBN Governor also said the rise in payment systems has also led to rising risks and thefts in spite of measures to stop the same.

He assured of CBN’s readiness to confront the high fraud risks of fintech, including stiffer regulatory prescriptions.

He said fintech would dominate the payment space going forward.

PoliticsBuhari To Present 2022 Budget To NASS Thursday by limcar(op): 1:40pm On Oct 05, 2021
President Muhammadu Buhari will present the 2022 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the Senate and House of Representatives on Thursday, Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, has disclosed.

Omo-Agege made the disclosure on Tuesday, while presiding over the plenary as the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, was absent.

Earlier, Senator Omo-Agege had informed the lawmakers that President Buhari has submitted the revised 2022-2024 Medium Term Expenditure Framework MTEF and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP).

In a letter addressed to the Senate, the President urged the lawmakers to approve the planning documents which he said would form the basis and assumptions in the 2022 budget.

He stated that the revision reflected the new fiscal terms in the recently enacted Petroleum Industry Act and the 2022 Appropriation Bill.

The revision, according to President Buhari, will reflect funds for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to prepare for the 2023 general elections.

He explained that it also has provisions for hazard allowance for health workers, wage adjustment for workers, and funds for the population and housing census in 2022.

PoliticsKogi: Monarch Bans Night Functions Over Upsurge Of Cultism In Lokoja by limcar(op): 11:51pm On Oct 03, 2021
In view of the recent upsurge of cult activities in Lokoja and its environs, the Maigari of Lokoja, Alh. (Dr.) Muhammadu Kabiru Maikarfi III, has banned all night functions in Lokoja Town till further notice.

DAILY POST recalls that there have been clashes between rival cult groups that have led to the death of some individuals in some areas in Lokoja metropolis.

It was gathered that these notorious gangs use occasions like night weddings to perpetuate their nefarious activities within Maigari Palace, old market, Kabawa, Karaworo a suburb of Lokoja community.

DAILY POST, however, learnt that the Maigari gave this directive to all Ward Heads and designated Chiefs in Lokoja who have anything to do with night functions.

The Sarkin Wasa of Lokoja, Mall. Muhammadu Baba Shata, while confirming this to our correspondent in Lokoja on Sunday night, said traditional artistes have been enjoined to be law-abiding and see the ban as a sacrifice for the restoration of peace in their environment particularly the traditional streets of Lokoja.

“You will recall that cult related activities are becoming a serious challenge in Lokoja now which is mostly perpetuated in the night and mostly leads to the loss of lives and property of innocent people and petty traders,” he said.
