The Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, has disclosed that MTN Nigeria contributes over N200 billion in Value Added Tax monthly, making it the largest contributor to the nation’s VAT pool.

Oyedele made the disclosure recently while speaking as a panellist during Channels Television’s Town Hall on Tax Reforms.

He used the platform to highlight disparities in the current VAT distribution system and explained the reforms aimed at addressing them.

According to the tax expert, the current system allocates all VAT paid by the country’s biggest telco to Lagos State, where the company’s headquarters is located, even though the services that generate this revenue are consumed nationwide.

“MTN is the largest contributor to VAT in Nigeria. So they, in fact, pay VAT of over N200bn every month; the gap between them and number two is huge.”

Generated and distributed are two parallels in power generation. You can have an installed capacity of certain MW but unable to distribute it all.

Again, refer to my initial comment where I said 'safely distributed'. And my assertion about rainfall is correct as has been attested to over the years.

1. Generation and distribution are parallel lines in the electricity industry. Nigeria has an installed generation capacity of over 10,000MW of which gas is about 70%-80% which is what your data represents. This is different from what can be safely distributed which is about 5000MW on the average.

2. If you read My comment, I clearly said what can be 'safely distributed'. What can be safely distributed is about 5000MW at peak periods (on average). Out of that, hydro contributes 2000MW.

When we told people that the increased power generation witnessed between June to September was because of the rains and not any thing special the government has done to justify an increase in tariff, we were subjected to harangue and called enemies of the state.

Except some places, I doubt any area sees more than 6 hours of light per day.

Until we unitedly & collectively hold governments at all levels accountable without bias or sentiments, Nigeria will continue to be a merry go round where the politicians and thier cronies enjoy while telling the masses to endure.

One of the most controversial issues in this Tax Reform Bill is that 60% of VAT to be shared by states will be given to the state it was collected from, It seems by this it will only favour mostly Lagos and Rivers State to the detriment of the Northern states who are collecting more VAT based on population.

Here is my concern, Lagos state was deliberately made the commercial headquaters of the Nation to the detriment of other states the more reason it collects more taxes.

Practically, All the cars entering the country pays their tax to only Lagos state. Even the cars to be used in Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta and Cross River states. Now this is not fair to these states as they have their own seaports but cars are not entering them, the taxes they are supposed to get as a state goes to Lagos state.

Also, Telecom companies pay their VAT in Lagos because their headquaters are located in Lagos, If this new bill is passed, that is no longer fair to all other states where the Telcom companies operate. Telcom companies should now start paying VAT to each state they operate as you can no longer rob Peter to pay Paul.

Oil companies have their headquaters located in Lagos while they operate in different states especially in the Niger Delta. This will no longer be fair if the bill is passed becaused those states where the oil companies operate will start demanding that the oil companies pay thier VAT in those states they operate.

The truth is this bill if passed, is seriously going to open litany of issues which I dont think at the moment the bill captured or resolved it.

Another worrisome dimension, this may prompt the oil producing states to start demanding for 60% of the oil revenues from their respective states, once this happens, chaos will reign supreme in the country.
