Shewunoshewa: Ideal federalism has worked before (pre 1967 era) and it will work again and again. The current system has failed woefully. It encourages laziness and corruption. How many states were there in Nigeria then? |
Politics › Re: True Federalism, Its Advantages And Implications. by lionshare: 11:05pm On Jun 13, 2016 |
Dminister: one of the advantages of true federalism is that the regional governments enter into competition in terms of development. This would quicken development in all the 36 states. The disadvantage is that unity could be lost among the 36 states making up the federation units as it gives room for cessation because power is resided in the regions. Most of the supreme powers are withdrawn from the central government and are concentrated in the regional governments making the regional governments prone to cessation. For the umpteenth time, Federalism does not support or advocate regionalism. In Federalism the center remains stronger and more powerful....regionalism cannot work in Nigeria only federalism can. Its imperative that some people understand that what we have now is FEDERALISM. |

nigerianvenom: The advantages are enormous as eddygourdo and erusen had earlier explained. Imagine a situation where a state can generate some amount of electricity but can't used it for the benefit of its people because it's exclusively the FG'S prerogative,is that not insanity? Imagine where a state has a very long span kilometers of road in its axis but can't construct it cos it's the FG road and if it's tarred, the FG will refuse to refund the money expended on such. These are critical issues where only true federalism would solve. Imagine a governor is the chief security of his state, but can't choose it's security details and can't even caution the cp of police. Only true federalism will curb this. My only problem is that it will breed grade A level of corruption if there is no check n balance. Its unfortunate most people do not know that what have now in the country is actually federalism structured is such a way to favor the entire country. I can't remember all the details but I know there is an exclusive list for the Federal Govt which contains security, electricity, foreign relations e.t.c, what we should ask is that FG should remove electricity from that list so that SG can generate, supply and consume within their states. I was expecting Fashola to champion this cause but it seems bros is quiet about it since he assumed his new position. If we can push our law makers to do this, the SG will also allow LG's to do it with time. |

dicefrost: Boss that scenario you described is actually healthy. A state like bayelsa for instance with roughly 2million people will generate billions from oil. The resources may be more than the people, there may be more jobs than the population, hence people from kaduna and kano may go there to grab whst is available. There will be continous migration untill we reach an equilibrium. Why do think there is an influx of people to lagos? It is because there is ample opportunity. Chief Money alone does not create Opportunities...You need the other factors of production! If money alone does, venture capitalist won't go about looking for where to put money. |

Interesting, I see a lot of uninformed folks shouting True federalism lately. First and foremost, there is nothing like True Federalism in the real sense of it, you either have federalism or another system of government. Now,what i believe most people meant to say is Ideal federalism, though its noteworthy to asserts that federalism as systems takes into consideration the peculiarity of the people.
What I think people should clamor for is greater autonomy of the LG and States. Even if you consider the American, the Center is still more powerful than any other entity and that's an Ideal Federalism, but when the states and Lg's have more autonomy mostly over domestic security and resources they can formulate policies within the federal structure and pursue their individual growth and development without waiting for the central government.
However, I personally doubt if the so called Ideal federalism can work in Nigeria, only a few states will survive; nepotism, favoritism and patronage will ruin many states. For example south south governors will allocate oil wells to the friends and family who will not even bother to pay taxes to the government purse but pay money to the governors account. Tell me how will the states survive? Food for thought! I see only a few states like Lagos, Anambra, Edo e.t.c; because relatively this states are more less of an egalitarian societies wherein anyone can strive to make it to the top and achieve some level of success even if you are not born of a silver spoon or belong to the political/elite class. |

In all fairness the OP is right but then we all know that its takes a while for cocoa to be harvested thus its not politically ideal for Ambode to invest in something he wont be in office to harvest.
I know Lagos has farms across most SW states and in other states as well during fashole era. |

Kompressor: Economy flights cost less than 300k to China at the moment. The minister can get a business class tickets but the rest delegation should fly economy and it still doesn't amount to even 10m
It's not wrong make loan requests but if the masses are having to make sacrifices I believe public officials should do thesame.
Regarding if the purpose was approved. Nigeria is broke and why raise unnecessary expenditures. However, The NBC has no choice but to approve. Furthermore, if there was no memo leak we wouldn't have knowledge of such irresponsible spendings. Yes to realistic such trip(Purpose of the trip) can be taken care of by the Nigerian Embassy in China. I agree with you on this one... |

Kompressor: The dumbest explanation I have read in a long while. How bout he gives us a breakdown of the 13m he is requesting not start up useless publicity.
In my opinion, a five man trip to China will not cost more that 7m: 2m for flights and transportation 3m for accomodation and feeding 2m for miscellaneous expenses
Nigeria is broke oga. Cut your coat according to your size. I am sure you have not checked flight rates to china lately? Lets argue constructively, is it wrong to ask for loan requests....Yes or No? Was the purpose approved? |

enlightenedmind: How can u say the president and minister should be sacked because of fuel scarcity? Please countries in the world have had to sacrifice worse to achieve economic growth. In the so called America u see today, workers and mass groups of human beings had to die, be burnt alive, be dragged on a horse, to achieve what u see there today. Nigerians, complaining at any given chance. What have u OP done to help matters? U sit and complain and wait for someone to give u everything on a silver plater. MSTWEE. please suck it up. I am not comparing Nigeria to USA that's way too far but compare Nigeria to any other OPEC country....then we can talk. Going by your post GEJ must have been doing a yeo-man's job to have made fuel available, also I work for my money ain't waiting for no silver plate but I dont have the means/rights import fuel; govt decides that so if its not available then the govt is not doing its job... |
Politics › Opinion: Buhari And Kachukwu Should Be Sacked by lionshare(op): 2:34pm On Apr 23, 2016 |
First and foremost I am not pro PDP, but considering the long standing fuel scarcity inherent in the country in the past two months I think the both the Minister and minister of state should be sacked immediately.
For all the name-calling and many unadmirable titles the ex-president and his team was given, he seem to know much better about providing Uninterrupted Petrol supply than the saint from daura and the acclaimed harvard graduate.
The huge economic losses to the scacrcity cannot be over-emphasized yet the Government keeps promising eldorad every other week.
Its time for the right protests with the true interests of the Nigerian people to be staged against this Government of undefined *Change. |

A president that doesn't have any proof of academic qualification is ruling a nation and refusing advice from seasoned economists in Nigeria and abroad and you think it is right http://www..com/news/2651354/devaluation-imf-versus-buhari-henry-boyo.html 1. 2. Yaradua was grossly controlled by the wife while its an open secret that GEJ is free for all. The point is devaluation will majorly affect the poor and create more hardship for the common man, IMF does not care about you. |

Buying fuel has been pretty difficult in the past one week in Lagos (Surulere, Yaba, Mushin, Mainland, Ikeja(Places I have been)), but I am yet to any post on Nairaland about the scarcity. The black markets are back and a visit to their regular spots depicts that business in booming, what is going on again? Is someone deliberately suppressing the media or what? Perhaps the problem is exclusive to the aforementioned areas in Lagos. |
