Suppose Nigeria's crude is worth $80/barrel internationally.

An importer buys crude from Saudi Arabia for $80, refines it abroad, and brings the petrol into Nigeria.

Nigeria then subsidizes the imported petrol.

Old Subsidy:
Nigeria had be using public money to make imported petroleum cheaper for Nigerians even though the crude used to produce that petrol generated no Nigerian upstream oil revenue.

That's the structural difference in what Atiku is proposing

In simplified form:

OLD MODEL

🇸🇦 Saudi crude → foreign refinery → Nigeria → government subsidy → Nigerian consumer

while potentially separately:

🇳🇬 Nigerian crude → international market → oil revenue to Nigeria

The two transactions aren't automatically connected.

Now compare that with Atiku's proposed production subsidy

This is where his proposal is conceptually different.

Instead of:

Foreign crude → foreign refinery → import petrol → Nigerian government subsidizes imported petrol

the proposed model would be closer to:

Nigerian crude → Nigerian refinery → domestic petrol → production subsidy → Nigerian consumer

That creates a potentially different fiscal relationship.

Imagine Nigerian crude has a market value of $80, but the government makes eligible domestic refineries able to obtain it at an effective $68 under the subsidy mechanism.

The government is effectively supporting domestic refining by $12/barrel.

But the crude is still being processed inside Nigeria.

So you could potentially have:

Nigerian crude → Nigerian refinery → petrol

rather than:

Saudi/other foreign crude → foreign refinery → imported petrol.

And that's why the argument about the subsidy needs to distinguish what is being subsidized.

Old subsidy

Subsidize the consumption/imported product.

Atiku's stated proposal

Subsidize domestic production/input.

Those are economically different mechanisms.

And importantly, the existence of the Dangote refinery changes the situation from the historical period when Nigeria had very limited functioning refining capacity. Reuters currently reports that Dangote's refinery is a 700,000-barrel-per-day facility and has reached full capacity.

The really interesting question

Your argument can therefore be reduced to this:

Why should Nigeria subsidize petrol produced from foreign crude and refined abroad when it can instead use a production subsidy to make Nigerian crude available to Nigerian refineries at a supported price?

$12 per barrel,I am glad you put a figure to it......hope you are equally aware not the entire $80 you quoted is going to the fg,your you have to reckon your production cost per barrel,jv partner margins and then govt revenues which isnt up $40 the crude oil price.

What then happens now that prices are shooting up to over $100 you will need to increase your subsidy cost,imagine what would have happened in this era of price volatility, scarcity and hoarding would have been more pronounce and we would have been buying at a higher cost we are buying right now.

The problem with atiku supporters like yourself is your inability to be able to think things through properly........your 700k barrels you are quoting for Saudi Arabia,which I really doubt......Saudi produces about 7m barrels per day with a population less than a quarter of ours.

Nigeria does just 1.7m bpd and you want to take out 440 according to you for a population of over 200m people, pls do the maths,do you know how much govt will be bleeding in revenue?

Atiku should come out and tell us,how much he thinks Nigeria earns and how much his so called subsidy will cost........also there is no way you can introduce subsidy without dictating how much dangote will sell his petrol which is totally against the PIA bill......if you tamper with it,you will drive away investments in that sector,thats job losses,revenue losses,,oil theft and smuggling all in one.

Wike is right about those governors. How come their senatorial candidates won and Tinubu lost the presidency for elections held the same day? They did not mobilise for the president.

Tinubu did not get 25% in Imo, but Governor Hope Uzodinma is the one opposing Rainbow coalition. They see candidates supported by Wike as threats to their interests. Wike literally made the PDP non-threatening for Tinubu and pushed out Atiku. Has Hope Uzodinma done for Tinubu what Wike has done for Tinubu?

Let them fight to deliver victory to Tinubu. Any governor who cannot deliver is someone who is a poor or underperforming governor. Wike is a good ally to have.

The delegation was led by the Director-General of the PCC, Senator Abdulaziz Yari, and included the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; former Governor of Sokoto State, Senator Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko; former Governor of Kebbi State, Senator Adamu Aleiro; former Governor of Kano State and former APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; former Governor of Katsina State and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Bello Masari; former Senate President, Pius Anyim; the Minister of Water Resources; and the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, among other council members.

Edo State’s Deputy Governor received the delegation on behalf of Governor Monday Okpebholo and introduced the team to the palace.

PCC cites economic gains
Addressing the Oba, Senator Yari extended President Tinubu’s regards and appealed for the monarch’s blessing and support ahead of the 2027 election. He pointed to a string of administration achievements, including a reduction in food prices, the stabilisation of the naira after the exchange rate had climbed to roughly ₦1,800 to the dollar, and the construction of inter-regional roads.

Oba of Benin endorses “renewed mandate”

In his response, the Oba of Benin thanked the President for the warm reception he received during his own visit to the State House in Abuja, and welcomed the PCC’s decision to visit the Benin Palace.

He prayed for President Tinubu to be granted a renewed four-year mandate, tacitly endorsing his re-election bid. “For somebody who is doing well, it is our prayer that he gets a renewed mandate,” the monarch said, adding a Pidgin turn of phrase to underscore the point: “As he dey pain them, he dey sweet us.”

Invoking scripture, the Oba urged critics to let the President continue his work unimpeded. “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone,” he said. “If one is doing well, why not join hands with the President to do what he is doing well? Let President Tinubu finish the good work.”

The monarch also remarked that not everyone is cut out to be President, and called on opposition parties to support Tinubu in continuing his current programmes. He asked the delegation to convey his best wishes and appreciation to the President for the hospitality shown him in Abuja.

Eastern Nigeria is the only region that got politically balkanized to reduce their political influence and economic progress in Nigeria after the end of the civil war in 1967; Southwest has almost remained the same old Western Nigeria and have even gone further to benefit more from Nigeria's post-civil war politics more than any other Southern region.

Before Nigeria had independence, Igbos were the ones controlling Nigeria even after independence, which made other majority tribes to start to develop silent disdain for the Igbos which was even acknowledged by the colonial masters and even late Sir Ahmadu Bello made this clear when he said Northern Nigeria wants to start a policy to stop employing Igbos in their region because they were dominating every sector....that they would rather go abroad and hire foreigners to fill in professional gaps because back then, Igbos had the most professionals followed by the Yorubas...and even in the Western region now Southwest, same was happening as Awolowo fought Igbo's gradual dominance of Western Nigeria's civil service and trade.

Igbos continued to control things even after Tafawa Belewa was made Prime Minister who controlled the government....but from nowhere...some young and overzealous Igbo Military Officers led by Maj. Chukwuma Nzeogwu felt they could play the role of Captain save Mr. Awolowo and the Igbos and they ignorantly carried out a highly skewed coup that destroyed every damn thing Igbos labored to build for years....Igbos lost everything and started from ground zero and have been suffering the consequences of that singular act done by few young Igbo military officers for decades now.


Today Tinubu is leading Yorubas astray.....Yorubas that use to be the beckon of truth and neutrality in Nigeria, which helped to make Yoruba land one of the safest and most prosperous have now become the epicenter of political corruption, election malpractice done with so much pride, arrogance and bragado.....and the champions of tribalism and division while pretending it to be protectionism.....please as we carry on with these actions thinking its all political game and Tinubu is the master strategist, let's not forget that every action and decision of man comes with consequences; negative or positive.....so that tomorrow's consequences of our actions today won't come to us as a shock or injustice.
