Kukutente23: Our tax to GDP figure is not correct i can boldly say. There's a bigger taxation that occurs in the informal sector and of course there's a huge amount of indirect tax in the system that's not captured.
Agric based states should be allowed to tax agric products if we want just taxes. If not, agric derivatives should be taxed and shared with agric inputting states. That's what I think so be fair and just I absolutely concur |

We don't mind, you shouldn't too Where many of you have since died and living those mansions desolate,we know many of your children who always say they would rather live and die in Lagos than go to the east because they have lived all there lives in the city and can't imagine living in those savage, dead beat villages. |

They pay us rent, and we pay 1% of it as tax
Everybody (especially the igbo man home and away) is happy 😊 Most of the land you claim you bought only have 99 years leases on them and your children are still coming back to re buy those lands when your current leases end. You are paying tenement on those buildings, vat on the materials you used in building them, employment for the indigenes of that state who would work on your site, more development to those places you develop and more taxes that are still coming while your region is replete with countless mansions that adds no value to your citizenry at home. |

Kukutente23: States should rather be allowed to determine what to tax. Even if agric processing plants are built, the output will still go to other states. For example, a state in the core north that wants to import machinery will do so through the southern ports. But their agric output which is resource based will not yield any tax for them.
Oil is not dwindling. Our oil resources have been and is actively being mismanaged. Trump is even more pro-oil than Biden. While taxes are important, our tax profile has seen an uptick since APC came in but how many of it can be accounted for? Even today, more of our income comes from non-oil sources like tax, agric export, duties etc You are quite apt with your inference, however, we still have one of the lowest tax to GDP ratios on the continent.....a state is free to choose what it taxes as that as always been the case,if a state is comfortable with it's paltry allocation from faac,no problem. It's a states ability to develop and retain human capital that would determine it's economic development and sustainability...... states in the north are earning nothing from direct taxes while a state like Lagos is benefiting enormously from it's location and commercial hub of the country. |

GetSenseNow: Any state can suck their citizens dry in the name of collecting VAT and revenue, but the important factor is what that VAT is being used for. What's the essence of posting huge VAT while your GDP and GDP/capita is very poor.
And for those gallivanting on this thread, VAT and IGR have never been statistics for measuring development. GDP and GDP per capita are, so stop disgracing yourselves Those states at the lower base of that chart, are you saying they are better advanced than those at the top. South east for instance with those paltry figures compared to the potential inherent in that region says a lot is wrong that means Lagos ,fct, rivers for instance earns more money from taxing the Igbos in their domains than their states of origin would. |

WorkTheTalk: Lagos: N249.77bn
What did you expect when all the important companies in Nigeria have their head offices in Lagos, and pay VAT there, instead of their production and consumption bases?
Just imagine oil companies exploring, drilling and doing oil transactions in Akwa Ibom State, but go to Lagos state to pay VAT just because their head offices are in Lagos. It has always being a lopsided arrangement to cheat the minority.
At the end, you would hear some illiterates telling people from other regions to leave Lagos, and go back to their states not knowing that majority of the development in Lagos came from those states. If those regions were conduceive for those oil companies to stay, they surely will,I bet you were to young or wasn't even born when shell was head quartered in warri, delta and mobil was in eket, akwa ibom before hostilities from the locals drove them out..... dangote refinery was also initially billed to be sited in the niger delta before he ran away with his capital to Lagos. |

FourQu: I love as south east is taking last in anything that has to do with tax or revenue
We can't be paying from our sweat then share over half of it with the remaining states and then these government thieves in power will be looting the remaining But also remember that according to your supremacist ideologues, South easterners are the most dispersed people in Nigeria and you should know that other states are benefitting from their sweat to the detriment of their region....that means Lagos or Abuja for instance earns more revenue on every Igbo in their domain as against Anambra or imo. That doesn't benefit the south east in anyway if I must say. |
Politics › Re: VAT Generated In States Across Nigeria (August 2024) by Lithiumite: 6:20pm On Nov 20, 2024 |
Kukutente23: VAT is a consumption tax. How Kano which has almost same population with Lagos will have consumption tax of about one-tenth that of Lagos is a mystery. What is obvious is that VAT collection is a formal system and the less informal the system of a state is, the less VAT that is collected therein. Another issue is if you say VAT should be zero on agricultural products but should be paid on processed foods, then states that have massive agric output will be shortchanged while those who produce using agric inputs will have higher VAT. This idea coming from a govt that has removed subsidy from fertilisers and has been the poorest at offering support to farmers both crops and animals since 1999 is tardy. Those states with high agricultural output would do well to attract investors for agric processing for both local consumption and and export.....the north has very huge agricultural potentials. Oil is dwindling and the revenue generated is also under threat in the coming years,no country can survive without taxes considering our abysmal GDP to population ratio....those countries we all like to run to for greener pastures all depend on taxes from their citizens, that's why things are working there. |

SmartPolician: There's no modification made to the tax bills that won't see Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt getting the most vat because they are the core consumers in Nigeria.
Even Ogun State, which has many industries, cannot stand a chance because most goods produced in Ogun State are consumed in Lagos and across Nigeria.
Just as the middle class is quickly varnishing, there's no conscious effort to distribute the wealth of Nigeria. We are still living with the "grab as much as you can" disease. Your analogy isn't quite correct, what it means is that govs would now strive to develop their states economies by providing basic infrastructure, education, health care and most important of all, security.......a state like Ogun or oyo can attract people who feel overburdened with taxes and living in Lagos by guaranteeing those things listed above....many people are already migrating to Ogun from Lagos and this is a plus for the economy of ogun state and all the govt needs is to ensure their are good road infrastructure, health care and security. |

Are the Rivers lawmakers the first people to defect in this country? I expected him to mention just one example of a lawmaker that immediately and automatically lose his seat upon defection. Even after the Rivers lawmakers, several lawmakers have defected in this country. Which of them lost their seat IMMEDIATELY AND AUTOMATICALLY?
This is where Governor Fubara shot himself in the foot. As long as no court of competent jurisdiction has declared their seats vacant, those guys are still members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. The failure to recognise this fact is what has led the Governor to make so many mistakes in breach of the constitution. That was same way he mislead GEJ!! |

Bobloco: The Labour Party has existed long before Peter Obi joined, and it will continue to exist after him. Peter Obi did not form the Labour Party.
The former governor of Ondo State, Olusegun Mimiko, won a governorship election on the platform of the Labour Party long before Peter Obi ever considered running for president, let alone joining the party.
So, this gaslighting attempt to make it seem like the Labour Party begins and ends with Peter Obi is misguided and will not succeed. A complete distraction
The elections are long over, and when the election is over, governance begins .Tinubu is president. His "bolekaja" economic policies are causing untold hardships and pain for Nigerians.

It even happens in the same election cycle, APC lost Ebonyi at the presidential election but won the gubernatorial election
PDP lost presidential election in Enugu but won the gubernatorial election, same with Oyo.
Heck APC lost the presidential election in Edo but won 2 senate seats there It's not same thing......you could see the representation across various regions....it's the structures that we are talking about......if anything we all expected LP to build on the popularity they already had by getting candidates up for the smaller elections.
