I beg to differ. The North was not planning to secede at all because by then it was already known that there was trillions of dollars in Niger Delta in the form of oil. That was also a major part of what the war was about: oil.

http://www.gamji.com/article6000/NEWS7030.htm

Lt-Colonel Hassan Usman Katsina, seemed to realize the significance of what was going on. Anxious not to allow Ojukwu's domination of the proceedings to continue for too long, he at one point dared Ojukwu to "secede, and let the three of us (West, North, Mid-West) join together". Alarmed by talk of a possible break-up of Nigeria, Ankrah quickly interjected and told his guests that "There is no question of secession when you come here [Ghana]". Although the FMG delegation was keen to mollify and make concessions to Ojukwu, Lt-Colonel Katsina was blunter than his other colleagues. He declared matter of factly to Ojukwu: "You command the east, if you want to come into Nigeria, come into Nigeria and that is that".

That was the general mood of the Northerners. Katsina was just the most direct and blunt of them all.
As a matter of fact and History, Gowon had referred to the initial war policy as "containment" meaning the Federal forces were just satisfied with a blockade rather than enter into Biafra. Then UNTIL the misadventure into the Mid-West.

Assumption has been said to be the mother of all fvck ups. The word announce was never used as part of Awo's words, so how on earth could people justifiably 'assume' it to mean that 'announcing secession' had the same meaning, as actual secession? You are just clutching at straws, and trying to twist words to colour Awo's comments, by giving such comments a false interpretation, that was never there. Desist from doing this. It portrays you in a bad light.
LOL.

Any comments on this?

Also let's not forget northern soldiers promised him presidency of one Nigeria after the war, which they reneged on and he resigned.

The problem is many of them have been regaled with these fictional rendition of the Civil War and that era that educating them is like trying to explain to a child that the Tooth Fairy does not exist. Explaining to a grown man that his whole childhood was a lie takes away his actual sense of self; therefore hanging on to those stories is necessary to maintain a level of sanity.

You see how he diverted attention away from the folly on Awolowo's speech - Awolowo should have been careful of how he spoke in public. Awolowo was a lawyer; not everyone is a lawyer. How can any regular man think like that? Same people who will tell us of how Ojukwu bamboozled people with English. All of a sudden, Awolowo's meaning became so difficult to read (despite explicitly begging Ojukwu not to secede).

Now, we have another fable to contend with - Awolowo had a deal with Gowon. Best thing is to leave him to hang on to his childhood and sense of self. Abi?

Mr Man, I will not bother with any more rebuttals. The mere fact that in this day and age you will believe such a puerile fabrication like "Gowon reneged because he was outsmarted with English by the more educated Ojukwu because he did not come with learned assistants" is enough to make an informed judgement about you.

Everyone except you knows Gowon abandoned the Aburi accord once he got home. The excuse was that Ojukwu, being more educated, outsmarted him as no intellectual went with him. The chant in the East was "On.Aburi we stand!".
You keep bandying these silly Biafran propaganda full of typical arrogance laced with a huge dose of idiocy.

You can find a list of the delegates here:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aburi_Accord

The problem is, you all were brought up with all kinds of silly and childish propaganda (that only children should believe) that crumble with the application of a little logic.

Please for your own sake, outgrow the silly propaganda you were fed growing up. I myself had to research and unlearn all kinds of tripe I heard of that era.

Exactly! Gowon had accepted most of the demands of the Aburi Accord. The agreement broke down because of "difference" in interpretation on both sides. I would think I can guess who was at fault here, when a simple "allowed" in a statement can completely confuse a particular set of people. grin

People and newspapers didn't notice the word "allowed". They are not lawyers.
You keep mentioning " people" and "newspapers". No sensible leader makes decisions based on newspaper reports. The Biafran leadership had access to Awolowo before the ill-fated push to Lagos. And he had explicitly voiced against secession. So what's the argument here?

Ojukwu himself called him a hero, and Nzeogwu and co picked him to be president. You don't get all that if u r not a great man.
This may lead to a long line of argument; but Ojukwu was being sarcastic; and please stop repeating the lie Ifeajuna sold to Ademoyega.

WetinConsignMe:

You are funny. Do you know any regular people who analyze things like that? All the average man heard (and I'm sure what headlines said) was that Awo said Yorubas would secede if Biafra seceded. Maybe he forgot headline writers and most people are not lawyers, like himself.
Apart from Awolowo being an erudite speaker, his actions clearly showed he was not in support of secession; rather in negotiation to prevent war. He had tried talking to Ojukwu only to learn about the push to Lagos; and he quickly beat a retreat. Ojukwu should've worked towards a confederation arrangement, rather than try to secede and get outsmarted politically by the Federal Government (an example being the creation of 12 states which immediately created cracks within the Biafran ranks). Now you said it yourself - Awolowo was not a regular person. You do not go listening to an "irregular" person with regular ears. Capisce?

Also, it takes clear and calm minds to form plans when millions of lives are at stake. From this tiny gaffe by Ojukwu, I can imagine the gargantuan ones that naturally followed. Granted, he was under a lot of pressure, but to miss the tiny nuance of a message, and then fail to listen to the voice of reason?

Please read more about Nigerian History; especially about the Counter Coup of July 1966. After the July 1966 coup and the Northerners had power, they did not even have a clue where to take the country! They had to consult with the British through the High Commission before actually deciding. The (Muslim) North was initially not driven by the quest for oil; but were simply unhappy being in the same country as Easterners. Recall that even the Sardauna (along with Awolowo) were not so enthusiastic about keeping the Nigerian structure during the push for independence - it took Nnamdi Azikiwe to convince them.

Here is a thread where this was mentioned (not properly discussed in my opinion).

https://www.nairaland.com/3169093/murtala-leader-july-1966-mutiny

I quote what Gowon was said to have asked Murtala here:

Gowon rhetorically asked Murtala how he intended to pay his soldiers wages reminding him that all the money is in Lagos.

And Domkat Bali:

The Christian minority officers like Domkat Bali were also not interested in having northern Nigeria seccede as they felt that they will be dominated by the Hausa fulanis.

You need to have a full understanding of the complexity of the country you find yourself before you can appreciate that it requires complex solutions.

"Detribalization" as defined by Danites means you do not hate other tribes, do not make tribalistic or bigoted remarks or posts, and do not want separation from other tribes.
OK. Let me humor you.

Awolowo was a "DANite" going by the actual content of his speech which had been turned around by people who do not have a firm grasp of English. Once again I quote:

(3). If the Eastern Region is allowed by acts of omission or commission to secede from or opt of Nigeria, then Western Region and Lagos must also stay out of the Federation.

Breakdown of this is, if Eastern Region is ALLOWED to leave, then there is nothing bonding the rest of Nigeria together so the rest should also go on their own. This statement was nothing but pressure from Awolowo on the Federal Government to ensure that Nigeria was not balkanized; and was not in anyway voicing support for Biafra; rather the opposite!

If you still do not get it, here is further background - The initial aim of the July 1966 coup was for the secession of Northern Nigeria (believe it or not) as planned by Murtala Mohammed until the British stepped in. Now, initially, the idea of the secession of Biafra did not sound like such a terrible idea to the Northerners. It was when it became clear that the West (and Lagos) would also go that they realized that "keeping Nigeria one was a task that must be done".

The statement definitely does not mean "If Biafra secedes I will join Gowon administration and fight them"
Ojukwu and peoople in the East were encouraged to secede.

It appears English is not your forte. You now posted the very same point people like Vivere have been trying to explain to you.

It is quite unbelievable that this is the statement made by Awolowo, that in the mind of a so called Oxford educated man somehow morphed into "if Biafra secedes, so will the South West" (in support of Biafra).

I now can understand how English can lead to wars. grin The lesson is, before you start jumping and making unwise decisions, ensure you understand what you read/heard.

Exactly. That tells a lot about the person of Ironsi himself. Is that how an assassination is carried out? A so called "General" believed that a man who planned to assassinate him will come sit in his office reception. Some even claimed he was arrested after being caught eavesdropping at the door. All manners of shenanigan have been written on Banjo's arrest; but none ever made sense. Clearly, his superiors and colleagues were simply wary of him. This usually stems from superior intelligence.

At that era, it was said that Igbos were the most educated in Nigeria and occupied most government parastatal in the country but after the war, the federal government stole their money and gave Igbos who had money in banks a flat sum of twenty pounds. Isn't that stealing? Some of their landed and housing properties where claimed by Hausas and Yorubas. Yet, someone will say they didn't loose anything.

The "No man's land" that Lagos State is called didn't start today. Igbos were the ones running that state.

No, he did not plan to overrun Yoruba land. As a matter of fact, he saw what the unruly Biafrans did in the Mid-West as a testbed and a pointer to what they would do in the South West. Besides he unlike Ojukwu knew that without the support of Yorubas he could never make it to Lagos. That was why he had meetings with Yoruba leaders and which Ojukwu ultimately used as the basis for trumped up charges.
