BABE3:

In this day and age where more women are getting comfortable with being "side chics" and baby mamas, I wonder why polygamy is causing this much debate. Aren't those concepts similar to polygamy?

Polygamy is all about choices; a choice for the man to acquire more wives; a choice for the first wife to get a divorce if she's not pleased, and a choice for the other wives to embrace polygamy.

Dont be silly.

Marriage is a contract regulating a relationship between individuals recognized by the state.

Concubines and baby mamas are not a recognized union/relationship. You dont get tax reductions and considerations as a concubine.

Polygamy wants to expand the marriage contract to be between more than two people. Tufiakwa! Haram!!!

You have finally exposed your ignorance. I will destroy your fallacious statements one by one;

1)Coogar;who determines what's right from what's wrong? wrong in whose eyes? even the jewish tradition allowed polygamy until the romans occupied israel.

Logic, reasoning and effectiveness determines whether something is right or wrong. Biblical Jewish tradition was barbaric, so no need to reference them

2) Coogar;
which legal consequences? aren't there polygamous wives in america? aren't there polygamous wives married to one man in britain? your lack of exposure is your biggest challenge, not polygamy!

Polygamy is not legal in the west nor in America.

Bigamy is the act or condition of a person marrying another person while still being lawfully married to another spouse. It is illegal in the United States. The crime is punishable by a fine, imprisonment, or both, according to the law of the individual state and the circumstances of the offense.[4]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygamy_in_North_America#Legality_of_polygamy_in_North_America

3) Coogar; being someone's 2nd wife is equivalent to being a slave? you are a disgrace to formal education. if you pull up slither daft analogy in the middle of an intelligent discourse like this again, i will tear you apart.

It was an analogy as you rightly noted. Being in a polygamous marriage as a woman doenst make the woman a slave. I was only showing you how someone can choose something bad for themselves (a freeman choosing to be a slave). Furthermore, any woman in a polygamy has a slave-like mentality (not that this is different from being an actual slave). Any woman with dignity would not choose to be shared like a toy at the whims of a man. However, some are forced into such marriage and feel chained in bondage to their situation. (eg poor women who need the financial security).

4) Coogar; UAE, kuwait, saudi arabia, etc allow polygamy and are better than any country you can pull out in the west. what has polygamy gotta do with the backwardness of a society?

Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait are better than western countries? Wow, you are indeed very very very local and ignorant. Please google the human development index and see how advanced countries rank. Saudi doesnt allow women to drive. grin grin

5) coogar; there are polygamous families in britain!
and the only thing you should close is your stupid mouth that has shytë falling from it. if you cannot grasp the concept of polygamy, you should excuse yourself & scram out of here.

FALSE. Polygamy is illegal in the UK. The law does not recognize such marriage. Try filling "married" in your tax forms as a second wife and see what happens

you must be joking......

life is about choices & that's exactly what feminism has been fighting for. if a woman wants monogamy, it's her choice. if she prefers polygamy, it's her prerogative. she's not forced into it. if it's uncomfortable for her, why marry a man with 3 wives & then turn around and claim to be a victim?

my $5 says you don't know the meaning of the word hypocrisy. you are just letting out hot air. if a woman walks freely into a polygamous setting then it's none of your business.

You see your foolishness?

No one is arguing that a woman cant choose to be in a polygamous marriage!!

The argument here is that polygamy is a wrong and anti-woman choice. Here is my argument again (please, read before you criticise)

logicboy01:
Note that freedom comes with a paradox.
Slavery is wrong. Freedom is a human right.
Unfortunately, this means that a free man can use his freedom of choice to voluntarily be a slave.
A woman can chose to be in an abusive relationship.

Feminism is not fighting for polygamy or illogical choices. It is fighting for gender equality and women's rights or freedom. What an individual woman chooses to do with her freedom is her own choice. If she chooses to be in a polygamous marriage in an advanced society, she will face the legal consequences.

Guy, thanks for exposing how you have been the illogical one.

Again- polygamy is a wrong choice. A man is not equal to two or more women. It is not surprising that the societies that allow polygamy are usually backwards and patriarchal socieities.

Take the top ten advanced countries or the top ten woman-friendly countries; none of them allow polygamy. CASE CLOSED! cool

Ukutsgp: most of the atheist we have in Nigeria/Nairaland are fake atheist. they pretend as if they don't believe in God yet they always talk about him. they are like someone who say he don't like eating a particular type of soup yet at night, he will go and lick the bottom pot of that soup. they dont contribute anything to societal development yet they will not leave pastors who are trying their best alone. they are like the pharisees in the bible. they like mocking men of God yet they are even worse.
they always think they can use common sense to explain God. they dont know that it will turn them to foolishness. how can one say that there is no God because he/she cant see him. no wonder the bible say the fool say in his heart there is no God. it is only a fool that thinks that way. but one thing i know is that majority of those who parade themselves as atheist in Nigeria/Nairaland are are those who backslide from church because they feel they cannot cope with God's moral standard. i have seen many atheist hiding to meet one pastor or the other for prayers yet they will say they don't believe in the existence of God.
they are all bunch of hypocrite.

Unbias grin grin grin

Good work. This is a refreshing argument for christian albeit a faulty argument.

1) special pleading for God. You cant give God some special existence characteristics that you do not even understand. Either something exists or not. To prove that something exists, it has to have a presence- weight, space, habitat, footprints, height. Something that exists must have physical properties. Your God lacks any reasonable characteristics of a living or existing being.

You even agree with this point;
"What does one mean by ‘existence’? If one means, ‘that which has come into existence,’ then surely God does not exist because God never came into existence. He always was; He is eternal"

2) Special pleading. Something cant come out of nothing. Your God didnt create himself and so how did he arise? Who created him?

3) Pure nonsense. It doesnt even address the paradox of omnipotence. Mtchew.
Can God kill himself? No- then he is not all powerful. Yes- then he is not immortal or eternal, therefore not all-powerful.

4) Unicorns, Giants, ghosts and talking animals are all in children's stories. Unfortunately, they are also in the bible.
God has the same evidence as santa- NONE

5) Christianity was started by a stark illiterate in a time of superstition and barbarians. Fact. A lot of Jewish folktales and ignorance are contained in the bible

6) The fact that Indians are largely hindu, Japanese are atheistic buddhists/shintoists and Americans are largely christians shows that the strongest factor when it comes to choosing a religion is by birth into that religion.

7) Pure nonsense. You even agree that the argument works and then you distance yourself from your own beliefs and fellow christians. Lying apologist

cool hmmm

9) Pure nonsense. The problem of evil proves that there is no good God. Saying that atheists are acting religious with this argument is just besides the point and a lying dodge

10) Evolution at least destroys the stories told in Genesis

Because you don't like polygamy marriage settings makes it anti-feminine?

There are women marrying multiple husbands, is it also anti-men?

These men chose to be in polyandry marriage setting, it is there choice.

what other people like it is not a must you like it.

because they benefit from it.

You need to use your brain.

Lessons in logic/reasoning/morality for tingtingz

1) Polygamy is anti-woman because it posits that one man is equal to two or more women. The reverse remains true for polyandry.

2) Choice does not equal morality or right. ISIS had a choice to behead or release american journalists. They chose to behead.

3) ISIS chose to behead journalist. Women can choose to try out patriarchy. Women can choose to be slaves. Choice does not mean morality.

“Anthropogenic climate change” is a very sly phrase. The term implies that human activity is the primary driver of climate change. No one is denying climate change; the argument is that you folks are exaggerating the human aspect without much evidence. All the things you say are due to anthropogenic climate change have always happened and will always happen regardless of human activity.
An example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Ice_Age

What is the evidence? How do we know the optimal climate? How do we keep the earth at this optimal climate? What do you suggest we do to “slow climate change”?

No one is denying climate change. If you want to place most of the blame on human activity, provide the evidence.

And irreligious people with socialist leanings will never compromise and listen. They’ll rather holler and complain without reason or propose solutions that don't solve anything

Lol, there are meaningful regulations in America already. Ever heard of the Environmental Protection Agency? The problem with the liberal mind is that there is never enough regulation to satisfy it.

There are new regulations and they are been implemented gradually.
e.g. JP Morgan is trying to offload a oil trading business because new regulations requires the company to divest as it could expose them to certain types of oil trading risks, Mutual funds now have to disclose the portfolio holdings to the SEC, over $30 billion in fines levied, new oversight rules for complex financial institutions, increase in the liquid asset holdings to absorb shock etc.

These companies are already regulated. The questions that should be answered are:
How much more regulation is needed?
What are the costs and benefits of the regulation?
Will the regulations drastically change the climate for the better?

It was repealed because the cons outweighed the pros.

And I agree with “Drill baby, drill”. American drilling has reduced the dependence on foreign oil and that’s good for the country’s security and economic interest. The “left wing nutters” can complain about drilling all they want, but I bet they don’t mind the recent stability in gas prices.

How do we deal with? How will our actions “slow climate change”? Out of all carbon emissions that can be measured, what is the percentage of human caused carbon emission ?

For the ignorant people who think Nigeria is not overpopulated

The Nigerian government is rapidly building infrastructure but cannot keep up, and some experts worry that it, and other African nations, will not act forcefully enough to rein in population growth. For two decades, the Nigerian government has recommended that families limit themselves to four children, with little effect.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/15/world/africa/in-nigeria-a-preview-of-an-overcrowded-planet.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

On the public perception of overpopulation in Nigeria, there seems to be a common misconception: that our country is not overpopulated; Most of us refuse to believe that compared to other countries of the world, Nigeria is overpopulated. To the Nigerians who have taken in to this trending idea, here’s a wake-up call: It is. Our country is not only over-populated, it is hyper-populated. How else can a country of over 170 million people living within considerably less than one million square kilometers of land— 923,768 sq km to be exact —be explained?

The thesis of this argument argues that compared to all the other countries of the world, Nigeria’s population simply cannot sustain itself: monetarily, economically, socio-commercially and otherwise. This thesis also argues that Nigeria’s overpopulation is a major cause of its underdevelopment
