WebmastersRe: What I Hate About Nigerian Web Developers by lojik(m): 1:57am On Jul 11, 2011
I have been disappointed quite a number of times while outsourcing to Naija programmers. Aside from knowing how to write one statement at a time(whc is all some ppl do), we need to have a standard too. Most people don''t use a pen and paper b4 they start coding. Some programmers dont even have a database schema before they start a web application project talk less of a plan. 99% of programmers i have interviewed are just bugs waiting to manifest. Most don't even know what SQL injection is.

The funny thing is that if your work speaks very well of you, your clients will raise your price. But here, we want to raise our prices without stepping up our game.
Its all about self development joor.

WebmastersRe: Pls Help Me On Bulk Sms Website! by lojik(m): 8:05am On Jul 07, 2011
You need to connect to an API (HTTP or SMPP). Sending SMS requires you connect to a gateway or provider and create your web app according to their API specification.
If you are using PHP and with API like what you have here: http://www.estoresms.com/api
then you can use any of the following php commands to call up their http api:
file_get_contents
fsockopen
CURL

If you are trying to develop an sms website, save your time and your money and try this: http://www.smsportalcreator.com

"Broaden my mind"?
I have been using windows sing late 90's, i am not using it for games. My use is driven by productivity and so far, wine + playonlinux runs the few software that i cant get a linux equivalent for.

You also need to use Ubuntu 11.04 and its unity (Unity+compiz=outstanding) interface on a tablet pc or slate to see how poorly designed for the future windows 7 is.
As for me, there's nothing else windows can offer me for my work that i have not found on linux right now.

Best of all, its free + its virus free + its fine (compiz+unity) + its free + its touch friendly + its free + its fast + its free (did i mention that its free?)
ComputersRe: How Relevant Is Linux by lojik(m): 9:36pm On Jul 06, 2011
I run Linux on my Laptop (Only Ubuntu linux no windows at all). I have also changed the official laptops of all my staff to Linux only. I couldn't continue with virus infested windows.
There's really not much difference because i run my windows exe files in linux.
I am typing this post on Firefox 5 on my Ubuntu Linux.
My entire company is now running on Open-source Ubuntu Linux 11.04 (Natty) and we are happy about it.

I dont like piracy so i am better off with Opensource.
In my own capacity, Linux is indispensable.

I meet an old friend and he says he's a programmer now.

Me: Really? And what projects have you worked on? Languages? Technologies?
O.F: I'm more into web development

Me: Good. Whc technology or serverside do u do? Architecture? Frameworks?
O.F: Actually, I'm into Joomla. I develop websites with joomla. Do you know Joomla?

Me: Then you are not a programmer.
O.F: Yes i am, i have built a lot of sites and my works speak for me. Do you even know Joomla? (Guy truns red)

Me: Ok. No offense taken. Its just that i'm a professional programmer and i don't agree that a Joomla installer is a programmer.
------------------
There are too many people who have never written a functional class or used a two/three dimensional array and yet call themselves programmers. There are junk certificate holder every where wasting my time by applying when there is vacancy.
After searching for competent support programmers for months, i gave up and decided to start training the programmers i will use tomorrow today. I now train my own programmers from scratch since all the good ones are overpriced (DHTML, Sly, Dual e.t.c).

WebmastersRe: Where Is The Best Reseller Sms? by lojik(m): 1:18pm On Jun 20, 2011
The simple way to go about bulk sms and not be ripped off is to host it yourself and own your own portal. That way, you can now buy sms from any provider and link to their API. If u get a better price from any where, you can change the API since you own your portal. Most sms websites will not allow you to change your API after you start reselling for them.

Step 1. Have control over the hosting
Step 2. Install your portal yourself
Step 3. Choose a SMS provider and link to their API

You can buy our sms portal creator at N5000 on www.smsportalcreator.com so that you will Install your portal yourself without any programming.
You can also try estoresms.com for your SMS provider. They have over 200 resellers and still growing fast.

If you need further advice, contact me on www.lekeojikutu.com

I think seun should create his own advert framework for Nairaland. He would be making more money than the percentage google adsense is paying him.
Come to think of it, all ads shown on NL are naija ads and google only pays a percentage of what they get.
I would rather advertise directly on Nairaland than do it through google who may be showing my ads on smaller Nigerian websites instead of Nairaland. or better still, i can advertise on the two with NL having higher priority.

WebmastersJoomla Quietly Crosses 23 Million Downloads, Now Powering Over 2,600 Government by lojik(op): 8:35am On Jun 11, 2011
http://techcrunch.com/2011/06/11/joomla-quietly-crosses-23-million-downloads-now-powering-over-2600-government-sites/

So what is this “Joomla”, and why should you care about it? Joomla is a free, open source CMS, written in PHP that uses object-oriented programming, storing data in a MySQL database, and does page caching, RSS feeds, printable versions of pages, news flashes, blogs, polls, search — things that every CMS should do.

And there are these impressive statistics: Joomla has now passed 23 million downloads, and currently stands at just over 23.5 million, to be precise. It owns 10.3 percent of the CMS market share, and BuiltWith shows it’s powering over 1.4 million websites. Joomla, for one, says that it’s impossible to know for sure, but estimates last year by FinishJoomla put that number between 1.5 and 2 million. Which admittedly seems small compared to the 23 million downloads.

Pure statistics are fine and dandy, but what’s led Joomla to become the second largest CMS on the Interwebs? This is an especially interesting question considering that, as an open source system, there is no figurehead or CEO pulling the strings, or making product decisions. Joomla is updated and expanded on, like WordPress(.org) and Drupal, by its community of developers. But unlike Matt Mullenweg of WordPress (who, incidentally, was named one of the 50 most important people on the Web by PC Magazine) there is no “face” of Joomla; instead, it has been collectively run by the nearly 250K developers that use Joomlacode.org, the resource in which developers can build open source software projects, tools and extensions, for Joomla users. (And there are currently nearly 8K extensions available for the Joomla platform.)

WebmastersRe: Are There Really Good Website Developers In Nigeria? by lojik(m): 8:01am On Jun 11, 2011
In my opinion, the thread is targeted at CEOs and Investors who don't know anything and will be swayed by "10 years" worth of techologies to grow their business. Sadly those kinda people hardly come here.
I have to agree with that.

@sly
Off-Topic: Where have you been bro?
Got tired of one-time contracts and custom app dev. so i decided to build a self sustaining company and start developing commercial applications with international appeal. This took so much of my time initially but i got developers now and i have some viable commercial products too so i'm kinda getting my freedom back gradually.
WebmastersRe: Are There Really Good Website Developers In Nigeria? by lojik(m): 6:45pm On Jun 10, 2011
I hold dhtml and slyrox in such high esteem and i find it difficult to reason with their method of approach to this thread. I believe they must have reacted because of the poster's topic.
We all started from somewhere b4 we got to where we can stand our grounds in web development 2day. I think the experienced programmers owe it a responsibility to correct upcoming developers in encouragement and not making jests and attacking their mistakes all because of our belief in our professional superiority.

How do we plan to encourage and mentor upcoming developers if all we do is make jest of their English anytime they try to sell their solution?

@poster
U need to be careful in selecting your topics lest u trample on people's ego because u may trigger an attack on your adverts and posts. Some people have spent years in developing their profile and take it personally if u talk down on them (developers).
