HCMC head priests debunk weeping Virgin Mary statue


Top clergy confirmed Saturday that the Virgin Mary statue in front of a famed cathedral in Ho Chi Minh City did not “weep,” but the surrounding crowd has yet to break up.
Since Saturday night, hundreds of people flocked outside the Notre Dame Cathedral to see for themselves the “tear,” which was reportedly a white long stain, on Our Lady’s visage, causing long queues and traffic jams lasting for hours in the area.

“The statue, which stands outdoors, has not been cleaned for some time, so a stain on the Blessed Lady’s face after the rain is understandable,” Sai Gon Giai Phong newspaper quoted Huynh Cong Minh, head priest of the Notre Dame Cathedral, as saying.

Minh, along with his subordinates, showed up on the spot that night, confirming the story was a mere rumor, but still failed to disperse the credulous crowd.

“It is a wild rumor or even a lie. People did not see clearly in poor lighting at night, but they kept talking about it, and the rumor spread like wild fire,” said Nguyen Cong Danh, chairman of HCMC Catholics Uniting Committee.

“We Christians adore the Virgin Mary, but we should be extremely cautious with such claims, not circulate it and cause disorder,” he added.

Local police were deployed Sunday to stop cars and motorbikes from entering the area to ensure visitors can still have a look at the Mother Mary in good order.

Church declares weeping Virgin statue a hoax and chases the missing donations

After finding that a statue of a weeping Virgin Mary was an elaborate hoax, the Catholic Church is investigating another mystery: where is the money donated by the faithful who came to see it?

The Vietnamese Catholic Centre, in the working-class western Brisbane suburb of Inala, collected an undisclosed sum of money from thousands of visitors

The centre is raising funds for extensions and refurbishment, but Father Joseph Liem has said that much of the money went into a poverty fund to help people in Vietnam and Africa.

"I just want to find out if there was any connection between the actual phenomenon that happened there and the collections that came in at that time," the Archbishop of Brisbane, John Bathersby, said yesterday.

"There's been accusations it was driven by a money-making process and it was a phenomenon organised by someone to bring in funds for the centre. There are so many accusations and counter-accusations that I just don't know what's the truth of the matter."

The archbishop hopes to conclude the investigation soon.

Father Joseph was not available for comment yesterday.

Apart from taking in donations, the centre received money from the sale of statues, crucifixes and other religious objects. Archbishop Bathersby said the centre denied any association with souvenir DVDs offered for sale on its internet site.

After a two-month investigation using X-rays and mass sprectroscopy, the Catholic Church found that the weeping statue appeared to be a marvellous event but was no miracle.

The report suggested the oil could easily have been injected into the statue with a syringe - two tiny holes were found in the base - or rubbed in.

The oil, commercially available Rose otto (or Bulgarian rose) oil, flowed when candles or lights warmed the statue.

The statue has been removed from public veneration by order of the archbishop. It is now in a display cabinet in a hall to the side of the chapel, looking out over a model of the community centre with its proposed extensions.

At the height of the religious fervour that gripped the centre, hundreds of people - true believers and the plain curious - flocked to see the statue each day. Now the car park is almost empty and, except during evening Mass, the worshippers can be counted on two hands.

"I still believe in my heart," said one person who was there to pray. "Just because someone says it did not happen here , we still believe it was a miracle."

The university says it will not retract its campaign
A small Canadian university has sparked controversy with its recruitment drive by using posters and a website mocking US President George W Bush.
Lakehead University in northern Ontario set up www.yaleshmale.com in a bid to attract potential new students.

It shows a picture of Yale graduate Mr Bush with the caption: "Graduating from an Ivy League university doesn't necessarily mean you're smart."

The president of Lakehead's student union called the campaign "repugnant".

The university has issued posters bearing the black and white image of Mr Bush, who graduated from Yale in 1968, encouraging people to visit its campaign website.

Once there, users are invited to click on a link if they agree with the caption, and are taken through to a page promoting Lakehead, which is based in Thunder Bay and has 7,600 students.

"There are universities and then there are universities. So let's not beat around the bush," it says.

"Lakehead is different. We believe the person you become after you graduate is even more important than the person you were when you enrolled."

There is then a further link to take users through to Lakehead's official site for potential students.

'Inappropriate'

The university has defended its campaign, which also includes prizes of a car lease and handheld computer games consoles, saying it has had a positive effect.

"It was literally a tongue-in-cheek way of getting attention," university president and vice-chancellor Frederick Gilbert told Reuters news agency.

The website had received more than 7,000 hits, he said on Monday, and online comments had been 95% positive.

But he acknowledged the university had received e-mails which were "running in the opposite direction", which was a concern.

"Older generations" and some of Lakehead's students considered the campaign inappropriate, he said.

The university would not retract its campaign, however, although it would try to respond to individual concerns, he said.

Student union president Isabelle Poniatowski told Reuters the campaign was low-brow and lacked class.

"It still strikes me as being very repugnant," she said. "Lakehead has so many positive attributes that you could really sell to people that live down south."

Sola Osofisan is the author of Darksongs (poetry) and The Living and the Dead (short stories), published by Heinemann, and DarkVisions (Malthouse short stories). Several of his screenplays have been produced for television and the movies. He has also written for newspapers and magazines. A film, television and theatre director, Osofisan is also a poet, film critic and computer freak. He has received a few awards, including the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) 1990 Poetry Prize, 1990 Prose Prize and the 1992 Prose Prize. Illegals arrested at Home Office

The news will put more pressure on Mr Reid
Five illegal immigrants have been arrested after turning up for work to clean a Home Office building.
They were working for a firm contracted by the Immigration and Nationality Directorate's Becket House in London.

Earlier this week a director at the IND caused a row after saying he did not have the "faintest idea" how many illegal immigrants were in the UK.

A Home Office spokesman said the Nigerian cleaners were arrested on their first day after standard checks.

Home Secretary John Reid, who has come under fire after also admitting he had no idea of how many illegal immigrants were in the UK, said the Home Office would not use the firm until it had better vetting procedures in place.

'Woeful'

He said the additional vigilance of a security guard helped identify them.

If even the Home Office is having trouble identifying illegal immigrants in its own buildings, it is no wonder other businesses are struggling

Firms 'profit from illegals'

The Home Office said: "These individuals were the employees of a firm contracted to provide cleaning services.

"It is policy that all employees and contracted employees working in Immigration and Nationality Directorate (IND) buildings have security and employment checks carried out, which include checks on their immigration status.

"Of course we will investigate further and appropriate action will be taken as necessary."

Shadow Minister for Immigration, Damian Green MP, said the news sparked "more questions than it answers".

"How long have they been using this firm? Do other Government departments use the firm? How confident is the Home Office that previous cleaners supplied by the firm were not also illegal?" he said.

Liberal Democrat Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Clegg MP said the Home Office appeared "woefully under prepared" in dealing with illegal immigrants.

"If even the Home Office is having trouble identifying illegal immigrants in its own buildings, it is no wonder other businesses are struggling," he said.

Earlier this week the IND's director of enforcement and removals, Dave Roberts, caused a row after conceding he did not have the "faintest idea" how many illegal immigrants were in Britain.

He told the Commons home affairs committee those who overstayed their visas were not pursued individually. The strategy was to target larger groups of failed asylum seekers working for the same employer.

Later this year new laws will come into force making companies liable for fines of up £2,000 per employee given work when the employer knew it was against the law.

Mr Roberts told MPs: "We are making huge efforts to remove them but not at the basis of tracing individuals."

Immigration minister Tony McNulty said on Wednesday the best estimate for the number of illegal immigrants was between 310,000 and 570,000. Removals ran to about 25,000 a year.
