Making sure there is no space (no matter how small) to allow for the invasion of the snail growing area by pests, rodents and small reptiles.

Have you heard of Obasanjo Farms?

Chill bros.

...merely pointing out the usage of "mechanization" in preparing free range snail beds.

Mechanization is not always proportional to scale.

Can we leave the Ebora Owu out?

He doesn't do free range.. Fact!

If I had his resources, I would raise snails on the moon.

Hmmm! Liberal information! You can't be in nairaland esp. The Agriculture sector and still end up poor after 9months. @ Lordhugo thanks so much, I have learnt so much... Can you come and supervise my farm when I start snail rearing.

I will send a member of staff or if your location is close to me at the time, I will come personally.

Buzz me....

Pic below is a current project..

12 plots (2 acres) of free range snails..

I am the first to attempt mechanized snail farming in Nigeria.

No you are not its actually good you gave an insightful advice I appreciate it. What's the possibility of rearing them in house like using a gate man security house?

Snails do good in environments which provide cover, moisture and food.

They will however do great in one that closely mimic their natural habitat.

Using an existing "uncompleted building is feasible" BUT the resources used in converting it into an escape proof/suitable growing area is better used in making a custom pen.

@lordhugo I want to start small like with NGN 20,000 I have two tyres and a small part of my house with sand close to the fence. What do I do to get the pen up?

Sorry for the late reply....

Tires are not a sustainable way of raising snails.. Ultimately, they Will get crowded.

Also, snails are definitely gonna try eating/scraping the vulcanised rubber.

I am not done adequate research but i try to think of toxins building up in the snails and being passed to man on consumption.

I hope i ain't discouraging you?

Hi Bros,
Please I want to start ASAP. I have constructed about 3 boxes (5ft by 2ft). The dept is about 2ft. One for Layer, and the second for Nursery and last one for hatching. Please kindly advise me, How many can i start with and how much will it cost ?
Thanks snd Best Regards.

Sorry For the late reply.

I believe you contacted me on WhatsApp and we have ironed this out.

You can't start with 100 breeders if you don't have an immediate expansion plan..

Density matters!

20 is an ok number.

Hello lordhugo,

My major challenge is security if i am to get a farm land for snail and veggie farming. Please how do i solve this because farmlands for sale are kind of out of the city. Because i will like to be close to the farmland. I presently reside in lagos but i am considering moving to ogun state for this. Which city is close to a farmland for sale and i guess i have to look for money to fence a part of the acre for snail..

Please i am very new to farming in general.
I am pasting this here so others can learn and also as per your instruction..

Security is a key area. These steps should mitigate theft...

1. Construction of Sandcrete blocks fencing (not 'inner pest perimeter fence') . Normal land fencing with access gate.
2. provision of housing for farmhand/s on site. (They won't just be staff, they are also security because they live in the farm).
3. Proper stock taking. (Even though you might not be 'correct', taking stock will deter staff from pilfering).

@Lordhugo, Thanks for the quality of info given so far on this thread
pls i want to know if i can use sawdust as soil for my snails as its difficult getting good sandy loamy for my snails whenever i want to change the soil(i make use of used tyres)

i assure you that getting 'good soil' for snails is pretty easy.

If it can grow crops, if it is not clayey, if it is free of stones....YOU CAN USE IT!

If they are aware that this specie of snail slime transmits certain extremely dangerous neurotoxins, they wouldn't be this foolish.
They do this because they are aware that some European and Asian beauticians perform it.

What they didn't know is that the specie of snails used is totally different.
[s]Giant African snails do have poisonous slime that can transmit diseases.[/s]

Your post is ignorant!

Good job @OP

My question is this. If you incorporate snails into an integrated set up farming other crops e.g vegetables, etc do the snails not tend to attract snakes ?

With a solidly built perimeter fence (note- not the land fencing) around your snail beds, reptiles and other small animals will be locked out effectively.

Well done sir Snail Lord, by the grace of Almighty God, you will be my snail consultant next year 2016 when the rainy season starts. I am trying to gather funds to build my pen before that time, so when its set, i will buy the young snails and place them in their new home to start breeding. God keep us.

Well done Yomi, and yes...its better to build now so when the rainy season starts you will be ready.

you have committed a big blunder here, you didnt talk about snail pest and how to fight them, that should be one of your major sub topic , how do you fight the pest that share the same habitat with snails and same food chain

Definitely Achatina Achatina.

Pros - more eggs
Cons- smaller eggs result in very small hatchlings.

I was thinking about doing this in the UK part time. The problem i have is space

Why don't you raise in Nigeria and export proccesed snails to the UK?

1. You will reduce overhead costs.

2 Land is cheaper.

3. You are creating jobs for Nigerians.

Cheers.

@ OP Ehn!! God Bless you fot this thread!! U make Brain!! i hvae been snail farming on a subsistence level on and Off for since my teens. I tried free ranging what i believe is the A.M specie at a point but was not successful. reading your thread now i can see a number of my errors. I shuld have had a pen for the breeders and then free ranged their offspring. also here is this red and black hairy insect larvae dts abt 3cm long that kept attacking them.

well now i free range a specie of snail that does not grow large. at maximum size the shell is about 6-8 cm long. its not the giant African snail and they are fairly common and extremely hardy and very prolific in producing offspring. However due to their small size i have always assumed they are not commercially viable. is there a market for them? cos i generally harvest for consumption.

Can i see pictures so i can be sure of my advice?

Please, can school chalk be used instead of limestone? I once heard that it is made up mainly of CaCO3. What about egg shells?

School chalk is CaSO4.

it is a sulphate, and not a carbonate.

Please do no use it.

Locate the closest poultry supply store and ask for grounded limestone.

Use as is or sprinkle on veggies before feeding snails.

Nice info lordhugo. My question, how fast does these things grow, does it take a lot of time before it matures.

From egg to table takes at least 6-7 months.

I leave mine for longer to command a higher price.

Larger snails, Bigger money.
