A Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed judgment for June 18, 2015 in the trial of a former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, charged with money laundering.

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia fixed the judgment date on Monday following adoption of final written addresses and summary arguments by lawyers to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and that of the accused person.



Fani-Kayode, whose trial began in 2008 before Justice Ramat Mohammed, was accused by the EFCC to have laundered about N100m while he was the Minister of Culture and Tourism and subsequently Aviation Minister.

The allegedly laundered sum was however reduced to N2.1m on November 17, 2014 after Ofili-Ajumogobia dismissed 38 out of the 40 counts levelled against Fani-Kayode by the EFCC for want of proof.

The EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Festus Keyamo, while urging the court on Monday to uphold the remaining two counts and to accordingly convict Fani-Kayode, said the former minister had failed to exonerate himself of the allegations.

Keyamo pointed out that the object of the charge was that Fani-Kayode transacted in cash sums above N500,000, which was the threshold stipulated by the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act.

Keyamo argued that Fani-Kayode himself had admitted making such transactions in his confessional statement of December 22, 2008 made to the EFCC.

He said, “In this statement, he admitted that he transacted in cash above N500,000. My Lord, this statement went in without objection by the accused person and the statement was voluntary.

“With the combination of this confessional statement and the statement of the IPO that investigated the allegation, we rely on all of this to submit that we have discharged our burden that monies were received by the accused person in cash and were not done through any financial institution.”

Keyamo argued that the prosecution had discharged its duty once it established that Fani-Kayode transacted in large sums above the Money Laundering threshold, adding that it was left for Fani-Kayode to explain the source of the money.

“Once you cannot explain the source of the large sum of money found on you, you are guilty of money laundering. If the prosecution must show where the money is coming from, then the whole essence of the money laundering law is defeated.

“It is not in all cases that the burden of proof lies on the prosecution; the burden at this point shifts to the accused person,” Keyamo argued.

He further argued that the court could not simply believe that the large sums in cash that Fani-Kayode allegedly transacted in were proceeds of his father’s estate, saying the accused should have called the tenant who paid the money as rent to testify in court and back it up with his statement of account.

But Fani-Kayode’s lawyer, Mr. Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), in his summary argument, maintained that Fani-Kayode made no confession to the EFCC, adding that the anti-graft agency had failed to show that Fani-Kayode actually accepted a cash sum of N1m, as alleged in one of the counts.

Adedipe said the EFCC had also failed to show to the court the person who handed the cash sum to the accused person.

He said for the case of the prosecution to succeed, it had to be proven beyond reasonable doubt.

“My Lord, it is our submission that the accused does not have to prove his innocence; it is the prosecution that must prove its case beyond all reasonable doubts.

“In this particular case, the prosecution has failed to give the evidence of acceptance of N1m; in the entire trial none of the witnesses brought by the prosecution gave evidence of giving the accused cash,” Adedipe said.

The senior lawyer said the defence had raised plenty doubts in the mind of the court regarding the veracity of the testimony of the EFCC witness, Supo Agbaje, who was earlier declared wanted by the EFCC and subsequently listed as a prosecution witness.

He added, “My Lord, reasonable doubt exists as to what happened and that doubt should be resolved in favour of the accused. Do we believe Agbaje, a man fighting for his liberty, for his life, who was remanded? Reasonable doubt exists in the testimony given by Supo Agbaje, who was declared wanted by the EFCC and later used as a witness.”

Adedipe, while urging the court to discharge and acquit his client, said the EFCC had no case against him but was only striving to “show to the world that we have caught a big fish; but My Lord, there is no big fish here.”

Ofili-Ajumogobia, while fixing judgment for June 18, also granted an application to substitute Wale Ajisebutu with Ogbor Elliot as surety for Fani-Kayode.

A motorist, Niya Ezra, says he was forced to bribe four policemen attached to the Ondo State Police Command’s Fast Strike Squad N10,000 to avoid being set up as an armed robber.Two of the policemen were identified as Sergeant Idoko Edache and F. Temitope.

Punch Metro learnt that Ezra, an employee of the Nigeria Institute of Medical Research, was travelling to the Akungba area of Ondo State to check his sick sister on April 25 when the incident happened.

Ezra said he had slowed down at about 12am on Ondo Road in Akure for the cops and wound down the glass of his vehicle.
He said,
“They are Fast Strike Squad with a patrol van marked, 04. I slowed down, wound down the door glass of my jeep and greeted them. They looked inside my car and told me to go.”

Ezra said as his journey continued, he was flagged down by another patrol team and the policemen ordered him to go back to the previous point for his vehicle to be properly checked.
“When I got there, they told me to park near a bush and proceeded to search the car. I folded both the front and back seats of the vehicle for them. They discovered I did not have anything incriminating. They checked my vehicle particulars and the chassis number and confirmed they are correct.”
After the search, the victim said the team suddenly became hostile and ordered him to pay N10,000 or be arrested for armed robbery.

He said he initially pleaded with the policemen, telling them that he was on his way to see his sick sister.He added that after four hours of pleading, he saw that the policemen were serious about framing him up for armed robbery. He added that he was forced to pay the N10,000.

“They threatened to frame me up for robbery if I failed to cooperate. At a point, one of them said if they really wanted to deal with me for proving stubborn, they would radio their station that an armed robber had been arrested.
“I was shocked. I then pretended as if I wanted to urinate and went to a corner to switch on the recorder of my handset. I begged with N1,000; increased it to N3,000; and then N5,000; yet, they refused. They said they would not collect even N9,999”
In the recorded conversation made available to our correspondent, a policeman, who spoke in pidgin, was heard saying,
“Your money is N10,000 I don tell you (referring to Ezra). Even N9,999 is not acceptable. When we stopped you why you no stop? You don suffer us instead of you to pack jeje (gently).
“Where one army (soldier) dey, una go pack, come down inside motor, carry leg go meet am and put money for inside drum.”
Ezra said he paid the money to avoid being set up by the cops. He said he had confidence in the police until his experience on the fateful day and urged that the cops be disciplined for the act.
“They did not see me with anything incriminating. But I had to bribe them at that moment because I saw that they were very desperate. It means they have been doing it to innocent citizens. I want them to be brought to justice.”
The police spokesperson, Ondo State Command, Wole Ogodo, said the cops had been quizzed and found culpable. He added that they had been locked up in custody as a preliminary discipline.
“He (Edache) wanted to deny, but I told him he can’t. Everybody knows me. I don’t compromise on discipline.

“Presently, I have ordered that he and his team members be locked up. For further disciplinary action to be taken on them, it requires that the man comes forward to give evidence. I thank him for being able to identify two of the cops.
“Meanwhile, on behalf of the command, I want to appeal to the man not to use the few bad eggs to judge the entire police force. I assure him that justice will be done in this case.”

An air traffic controller's calm words helped talk down a former flight student from the air after he allegedly stole a plane from a Las Vegas airport.

Evan Grant, 27, allegedly stole the plane from the North Las Vegas Airport around midnight, and after about an hour in the air, with authorities watching anxiously, the air traffic controller was able to convince him to land.

According to air traffic control audio obtained from liveatc.net, the official at the tower spoke calmly, saying he just wanted to get Grant down safely.

"I kind of screwed up your night, didn't I?" Grant said, according to the audio.

"I just want to get you down on the ground safely," the flight controller said. "We'll grab some coffee, go to my house, whatever. We'll have a -- we'll just talk, OK? Just come on down. Grant said he hadn't eaten in almost 18 hours, citing "the emotional aspect of everything."
After about an hour in the air, Grant was finally convinced to land, thanks to that stranger on the radio.
"Since you've kept me company I'll just make it easier for you," the pilot's voice on the audio says. "I'll just come down."

As he turned back to the airport, the pilot's voice tells the controller that he knows he's in big trouble.
"I've already committed enough felonies," he says. "I can't believe I'm never going to get to do this again."
But the controller tries to reassure him: "You will, you will."

After the landing, Grant was arrested by North Las Vegas police on a charge of grand larceny auto. He booked into the Las Vegas city jail and has not entered a plea.

The National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party has issued a severe warning to those it described as “some ambitious aides and associates of President Goodluck Jonathan” who it said are trying to use their closeness to him to cause crisis in the party and pave way for more defections to other parties.

The NWC of the party also threatened to expose such individuals and make them face full disciplinary measures if they fail to immediately retrace their steps.



It said those behind the plot were those, it alleged, mismanaged the party’s presidential campaign.

This is as the South-West PDP Presidential Contact and Mobilisation Committee asked the National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu, and other members of the NWC to resign.

They based their call on the loss of the PDP in the last general elections, especially the presidential polls.

The NWC in a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh, said it was “aware of the clandestine activities of such aides and associates of the President, including their unholy alliance with some elements in other parties to undermine and weaken the PDP by attacking its leadership.

“The NWC is aware that these same individuals who mismanaged the presidential campaigns are now desperately seeking to cause crisis in the PDP with a view not only to divert attention from their misdeeds, but also to ensure that they remained politically relevant by hijacking the party structure for their selfish purposes.

“We are aware that these individuals have been trying to arm-twist the President to order a meeting of party leaders at the Presidential Villa in the coming days where the NWC members would be put under pressure to resign, thereby triggering a crisis in the leadership at national level.

“The party is aware that the same group has been sponsoring series of amorphous bodies and negative publications in a section of the media to peddle false allegations against the NWC to back their heinous and unconstitutional demands that the President should sack the NWC before the handover date of May 29, 2015.”

Metuh however added that “for the purposes of clarity, especially for those making uninformed demands of the President, the party NWC is duly elected and its tenure ends in March 2016 in line with the provisions of the party’s constitution.

“The PDP is a party built on the rule of law and democratic ethos. Its NWC is elected and not appointed and as such cannot be sacked at will or by an executive fiat. Besides, no section of the party constitution prescribes that the NWC should quit if the party loses in a general election.”

He added that the PDP constitution is clear on the process of summoning a meeting of party leaders and the role of the NWC in that regard is well-defined, adding that anything outside the laid-down rules and provisions of the constitution in this respect is completely of no effect.

The party’s spokesman said further that President Jonathan had amply demonstrated his strict adherence to the rule of law and the tenets of democracy even on issues of party administration and should not in any way be hassled by those he described as selfish and greedy elements to destroy his legacies.

He added, “Consequently, the leadership of the PDP by this statement makes it very clear and in an unambiguous terms too that it will no longer condone such divisive actions by the same unscrupulous individuals who in their selfishness ruined the fortunes of our great party in the general elections.

“The NWC will no longer tolerate actions that tend to undermine discipline and the supremacy of the party and its constitution, as it will henceforth not hesitate to apply full disciplinary measures for infractions

“Our advice to these ambitious aides and associates of the President is to leave party matters and concentrate on the presidential transition and smooth handover of power to the incoming administration as well as prepare for post-handover issues that might arise regarding the administration in which they served.”

On the issue of the performance of the party in the general elections and allegations of mismanagement of presidential campaign funds, Metuh said it had no case to answer, as Nigerians already knew the truth regarding those who managed the campaigns including the funds.

“Nigerians are not at a loss as to the fact that the PDP NWC did not manage the campaign and its fund. Those who managed the campaigns have already submitted their reports to the President who in his wisdom gave them the mandate and they have been applauded for a job well done at that level”, the statement said.

Metuh said the party appreciates the support and backing of key stakeholders, especially the PDP Governors’ Forum, the body of national vice-chairmen and state chairmen as well as governors, legislators-elect and all well-meaning members in efforts to rebuild the party and reposition it to regain power in 2019.

Meanwhile, rising from a closed-door meeting held on Friday in Ado Ekiti, the South-West PDP Presidential Contact and Mobilisation Committee, in a statement read by Olabode George, vowed to resist any attempt to impeach the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, for his loyalty to the party.

The group commended President Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat despite the noticeable flaws in the presidential poll, saying this had allowed Nigeria to remain united and prevent unwarranted crisis.

It enjoined defected members to return and rebuild the party, since the All Progressives Congress had boldly declared that there was no space for them in the party.

It also commended Fayose for resisting intimidation and remaining dogged in the battle against impeachment by the APC, encouraging him and the Ondo State Governor, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, to continue to work together.

It expressed its support for serious overhauling of the party’s structure at national level.

George said, “People like President Jonathan are very rear to come by. He accepted a flawed election for Nigeria to stand united. Can those who have not been sworn in and have started threatening to impeach a PDP governor do this?

“PDP lost the elections because of unresolved issues and due to the handiwork of enemies within, coupled with the conspiracy by INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, who wisely made Nigerians to have the impression that the election was free and fair when it was not.

Fayose and Mimiko, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr Kola Ademujimi, appealed to the President -elect, Major Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, to believe in a new Nigeria, where people could easily express themselves and pursue their political aspirations without impediment.

Speaking on his impeachment travail, Fayose said, “I am a member of the PDP and nobody can harass me because of my political belief.”

No fewer than 30 people were killed as soldiers invaded Kadarko, Kurmi and Wadata villages of Wase local government area of Plateau following the alleged killing of four soldiers by some unknown persons.

The house of the traditional ruler of the Kadarko, Ponhzi Kadarko, Chief Lot Nde, was also said to have been torched.

Our correspondent gathered that the soldiers who arrived the villages in over 40 trucks were in revenge mission over the alleged killing of their colleagues at Angwan Nanmi in Karin Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State.



Executive Director of Stefanos Foundation, Mr. Mark Lipdo, quoting sources from the village told our correspondent that the soldiers arrived and opened fire on innocent people and burnt houses.
Lipdo said, “ Information says soldiers in over 40 trucks arrived Kadarko, Kurmi and Wadata of Wase LGA in Plateau State today(Saturday) following report of alleged killing of four soldiers at Angwan Nanmi, Karin Lamido LGA of Taraba State. According to residents, the soldiers arrived and opened fire on innocent people, burning houses. It is not clear why soldiers would open fire on the people they are supposed to defend.’’
He added, “Sources speculate that it is in retaliation for the killings of their colleagues. Others denied this, moreso that two of the four soldiers killed were even Tarohs from the area. Villagers would rather believe it is a deliberate plan by the outgoing governor to intimidate their area, following the overwhelming votes from the area that changed the results of last election.”
Spokesman for the Special Task Force, Capt. Ikedichi Iweha while reacting to the allegation, said there was no truth in the claim that its members attacked anybody.

He said that the operation was meant to check gunmen who had been terrorising residents and security personnel in the area.

According to him, following frequent attacks on communities around the Plateau-Taraba border by some militiamen, the STF and soldiers from the 3 Armoured Division of the Nigerian Army had been carrying out operations targeted at flushing out the militiamen, and that soldiers who were working to protect innocent civilians could not turn around to kill the same people.

Tyga is a wanted man in Calabasas ... wanted by a landlord who claims the rapper owes them a fortune in back rent and is now thumbing his nose at them ... so they're threatening Kylie's BF with jail.

Tyga rented a fancy house in Calabasas back in 2010, but fell way behind. The landlord got a judgement for nearly $90k in back rent. But that's not the end of the story.

Tyga never paid the judgment, so the landlord filed legal docs to force Tyga back into court, so a lawyer could grill him on where he's keeping his assets ... assets that could be seized to satisfy the judgment. Continue...


You may recall last month, while Tyga was hawking his L.A. Gear kicks at a release party, he got served with papers ... and now we know that was to demand he show up for the hearing.


Tyga, it seems, had better things to do, because he was a no show, which pissed off the landlord. Tyga's lawyer then tried to mollify the landlord by offering to pay his lawyer bill for the hearing, which came to $1090. Tyga wrote a check ... and it bounced!

To add insult to injury, the landlord noticed that Tyga posted on his Instagram -- 5 days before the hearing -- stacks of hundred dollar bills.

So now the landlord's out for blood, demanding he pay the full judgment, plus interest, which has now swelled to $124k. And, the landlord warns, if he doesn't pay, he'll get an arrest warrant because Tyga failed to show at the hearing.

President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday picked holes in the results of the March 28 presidential election, saying “the Peoples Democratic Party couldn’t have got those kinds of scores” it had in some places.

Jonathan, who spoke shortly after receiving the report of the Senator Ahmadu Ali-led PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, however advised that since the general elections were over, the country must be allowed to move forward.



He added that apart from himself that quickly conceded defeat to the All Progressives Congress candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, many PDP members also made sacrifices because they were persecuted in the course of electioneering.

The President said, “The problem is not whether we lost the elections, that is history, but how do we consolidate our party and move forward? If we are committed and we work hard, definitely the PDP will bounce back.

“The PDP is still the dominant party. If you look at the results, the difference is just 2.5 million votes and if you look at the areas where it is perceived that the PDP scored so low, the PDP couldn’t have got those kinds of scores but the elections are over, so the country first.

“It is not as if Jonathan alone made the sacrifice, it is all of us. I made the pronouncement but some of us are paying the price.

“Some people pay more price than I do, I know how some of you are already being persecuted and the kind of situation facing you.

“The key thing is that we must continue to unite, as a party; we must continue to work hard so that as we go into subsequent elections in 2019, 2023 and so on and so forth, the PDP will continue to come up strong. Even in the interest of the nation, we need the PDP.

“I still believe, though we have lost presidential election, some National Assembly elections, governorship elections especially in the North, the PDP is still the dominant party.

“Let us not judge the PDP by the results of the elections for the presidential election.

“Our duty is to go back and identify areas of challenges so that the party will come up strong and play the role as a very strong party. The PDP is still the most organised party, is still the party that is not owned by anybody, is still the party that whatever you are, you can get to any level with your competencies and so on.”

The President also said that all members of the PDP who defected to the APC would return with empty stomachs.

He said that it was not unlikely that the APC leaders would first settle their members before thinking of those who joined them midway.

Jonathan added that “food” might have finished before it gets to the turn of the PDP defectors .

He urged party faithful to remain committed to the PDP, adding that even if it was difficult in the beginning; their aim would be achieved at last.

The President said, “I encourage members of our party to remain loyal to the party; not to be so disillusioned because we lost presidential election and decide to go where they think they will fill their stomachs or something.

“It is not easy. I have been here for five years plus, you hardly satisfy even 15 per cent of those who work for you.

“So, those people running and those already cross-carpeting, they will come back on an empty stomach because they will touch the primary members of their party before they get to them.

“They know you are coming because you are hungry; and before it will get to you, the food will be gone.

“So, let us be committed to the party, yes we will have challenges at the beginning but surely we will get to where we want to be.”

The President said although he did not consult before calling Buhari on the telephone to concede defeat, he took that step on behalf of the PDP.

“Yes, I did not consult anybody before I made that phone call (to Buhari) but I made that phone call on behalf of all of you and on behalf of the PDP, “ he said.

Jonathan likened the 2015 elections to the nation’s civil war, saying people would give different accounts of the event depending on the angle from where they were reporting.

He however said because of his privileged position, he knew about the elections more than any other person.

He said the issue was not about his electoral loss, but the need to consolidate the party and move forward.

He said, “The issues of this 2015 elections will be similar to the civil war because different people gave different accounts of the civil war.

“The first book on civil war that I read was ‘My Command’ by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, which is his perspectives on what he saw and observed. I recall (Chukwuemeka) Odumegwu-Ojukwu’s own was ‘Because I’m Involved.’

“I know that the issues of the 2015 general elections, may be after few years when political scientists will write, we will get different perspectives.

“If you ask the various observer groups, each will give you a different perspective. Even among ourselves whenever we talk sometimes I laugh when people draw some of their analysis but by my privileged position, I know a little more about the elections than others.

“But the key thing is not whether we lost or won but that Nigeria as a nation must move forward. Political parties can only thrive when there is peace and stability in the country. If there is military intervention all the parties will disappear.”

The President also argued that despite the loss that the PDP suffered in all the elections, it remained the dominant party in the country.

Jonathan expressed delight that countries that brought ships to Nigeria and were waiting to evacuate their citizens in case post-election crisis broke out did not have any reason to do so.

The Chairman, Board of Trustees of the PDP, Chief Tony Anenih, attributed PDP’s loss to what he called conspiracies and betrayals by people trusted by the party chiefs.

Anenih however said they needed to put that behind them and look at how they could build a party that would serve as a vibrant opposition to the APC.

“There is a lot to be done. We need a very vibrant and strong party that can stand in as a strong opposition party; a party that can stand well in the next election. That party has to be put in place now. I believe that we are on the right path,” he said.

Ali said the lessons learnt from the elections would be used to wrest power from the APC in 2019.

He said it was saddening that the PDP lost despite all the energy it put into the electioneering.

Ali also said the report would provide a road map for the PDP to move forward.

Just like you, everyone else is imperfect. Accept that fact or wait for the guy to emerge from the book and marry you.

3. You smell desperate. Men have a special ability to smell desperation in a woman. Unfortunately, we find that odor very offensive and avoid it like a plague. Now your parents and friends are asking you frustrating questions about marriage, and you are so sick of those questions so you’d do anything to get the next available guy to marry you. You need a man so badly and justifiably so. Unfortunately for you, the more desperate you are, the less attractive men find you.

4. You pay too little attention to your appearance. You don’t want to look like a bitch. So you always dress down, doesn’t wear make ups and are unkempt. You are just pathetic. Even stunningly looking ladies are still in the husband-haunting market; and you really think a guy will leave all the attractive women and come for you because he’s “good guy”? Well, if your goal is to have him sleep with you, some men won’t mind. But if it’s to get him to marry you, then, you are so mistaken. Haven’t you been told that men are visually stimulated?

5. You pay too much attention to your appearance. The fact that men are visually stimulated doesn’t mean they are unreasonable. Some men may make awkward choice of a sex partner, but when it comes to a life partner, men are painstakingly selective. If not, you’d be married by now. Every man dreams of marrying a decent lady, not some bitch who won’t mind going naked on the street to get cheap attention.

6. You are rather too sexually naïve. Each time he talks about sex, you act like he has just committed a crime, because you are a virgin or you don’t want to appear promiscuous. When you do that you only make him wonder how boring or frigid you are in bed. Normal men like sex. And whether you want to agree to it or not, if he doesn’t have a hint that you can satisfy him sexually(either practically or by insinuations), he’s put off (most of the time) subconsciously. That’s when men say things like “there’s no chemistry”, “I don’t feel her” or “we don’t connect”. In other words, your insensitivity to his libido repels him.

7. You are too boring. If you could choose between two guys with equal qualities in all ramifications except that one is boring and another is interesting, which of them will you rather pick? The interesting one of course! So why do you think if he has to make a similar choice, he’ll prefer the boring you to an interesting lady? You excuse yourself by saying “I’m the quiet type”. Being an introvert is different from being boring. Men are logical by nature and therefore they tend to be more futuristic species. So, he’ll picture the two of you alone in your home. No one looks forward to a boring home. Some ladies are uninteresting and uninterested.

8. You nag. This is by far one of the most annoying behaviors a lady can exhibit. It is alarming however how many women nag. All in the bid to get him do what she wants, when she wants it and how she wants it, women typically become nags to achieve their ends. This is rather selfish and insensitive. No matter what you hope to achieve, nagging will never get you anywhere. And it will drive men far away from you.

9. You are insecure. It is normal for women to need constant reassurance. What is not cool however is for them is to make their guys’ lives impossible because of deep-rooted lack of self-confidence. Insecurity is an awful but common issue amongst many women. No matter what the guy does, it hits their weak point. If he looks there, he’s checking out another girl. If he’s busy with work, he doesn’t love you. If forgets an important date, he doesn’t care. If a lady calls him, he’s cheating. You suspect his every action and inaction and react awfully even to well-intended gestures. That way, you will drive every man in your life away, and fast.

10. You are too stubborn rigid. Being principled is an admirable thing, but being unreasonably unbending is unattractive. All in the name of being principled, you go around with a lousy air of sauciness and you want a million guys to come asking you out? Your very long list of do’s and don’ts that must be strictly adhered at all times in all condition is not a plus but a minus. You are unbendable, unreachable and unteachable and you actually pride yourself about it. Well, I got news for you; you are going around with red beeping alert that says “keep off guys, I am a robot!”...

A Muslim cleric has issued a fatwa ordering a woman to agree to sex with her husband even if they are on the back of a camel, as he denounces the idea of marital rape as 'made up by European people'.

Perak Mufti Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria claims that, according to the Prophet Mohammed, a wife can only refuse her husband sex if she is menstruating, sick or just given birth. Her right to say no, he asserted, was lost the moment her father handed her to her new husband.



Zakaria told Malay Mail Online:
'Even the Prophet says even when they're riding on the back of the camel, when the husband asks her, she must give. So there's no such thing as rape in marriage. This is made by European people, why should we follow?'
Unsurprisingly, his religious edict and outrageous comments have horrified many in his home
country of Malaysia and beyond.

'Have we not provided excuses for rapists long enough? We need to recognise that women, both married and not married, have the right over their own bodies, and that includes the right to reject sex.

This is the moment a shopkeeper who tried to defend his shop from a pair of masked robbers was hit on the head with a machete (circled) and fell to floor. He later needed surgery to wounds to the top of his head

Police have released CCTV footage of a shocking robbery in which a shopkeeper was hacked at with a machete as he tried to defend his shop.

The footage shows two masked men burst into a convenience shop in the Monton area of Salford last month before demanding the till be opened.

After the shopkeeper pulled out a baseball bat, he was attacked by the two men, one of whom repeatedly struck him on the head with a machete.




The shop worker required surgery for a large wound to the top of his head following the attack, which happened shortly before 8.30pm on Friday March 27.

Two masked men had burst into the store, one jumping over the counter while another stood guard at the shop's entrance.

The shop worker refused to hand over his money and tried to fight them off with the bat.

But as he grappled, one raider held him on the counter while the other hit him over the head with the large hunting knife, which was hidden in a sock.

He was left bloodied and injured as the robbers fled with cash and cigarettes and ran down Park Road towards Eccles Park and Ellesmere Road.

Police released the horrific footage as they launched an appeal for information on the robbery.


Detective Constable Derek Nellany of Greater Manchester Police said: 'I am appalled at the level of violence and intimidation used by the men on an innocent shop assistant who was just doing his job. The man was trying to protect the business but in doing so was brutally attacked.
'The offenders both wore very distinctive clothing and I ask people to have a good look at the footage and if you recognise the men in the images or the distinctive clothing, please contact police immediately.'
The man with the machete is described as white and in his late teens to early 20s. He wore a facemask and a black top with a thick light-coloured strip down both arms and a white T-shirt over the top, and black trousers.

The other man is also a white male around the same age. He wore a blue hooded top with the words California Pasadena in large lettering on the back, and black trousers.

A father-of-two has been sent a letter from the Government telling him he is dead.

Peter Moore was shocked after receiving the document from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) last week.
The letter was addressed to the 'representative' of Peter William John Moore and apologised for the family's 'recent bereavement'.
It added that officials needed to sort out whether Mr Moore had paid enough - or too much - tax.
The 47-year-old pottery factory worker, from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, yesterday demanded an apology from the Government.



He said: 'I don't know how that kind of mistake could have been made.
'I used to work away in the week so if that would have happened my wife could have really started to worry.

‘She opened the letter when I was out of the house. Fortunately I came back home about five minutes after she read it so she knew it was a mistake but that might not have always been the case.
'I rang the tax people and the lady on the other end said she couldn't believe it. I was just really shocked, it's just all a bit strange.'
Mr Moore's wife Debbie, an accounts assistant, said she was left ‘gobsmacked’ until her husband walked through the door.

The 43-year-old added: 'It's really not nice getting a letter from HMRC - especially when what they're saying hasn't really happened. I was gobsmacked.


'When I read it I thought it was a scam or some sort of joke. I showed it to Pete when he came in and he got straight on the phone to the tax office.'
The letter from the Government department read: 'I am sorry to hear about your recent bereavement and recognise that this is a difficult time for you.
