The inauguration of a tripartite committee to look into the implementation of the new minimum wage for workers has been approved by President Bola Tinubu. This was contained in a letter from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume, addressed to Comrade Ambali Akeem Olatunji of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC. The letter dated January 23, 2024, is titled “Inauguration of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage.” According to the letter, the committee will be inaugurated on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa. It reads: “I write to inform you that Mr. President has approved the inauguration of the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage. “The inauguration will take place on Tuesday, 30th January 2024 at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, State House, Abuja, at 12:00 noon prompt. “Members are to be seated by 11:30 am. Kindly note that a shuttle bus will be available at the pilot gate to convey members to the venue from 10:00 am.” The Nigerian labour unions have been agitating for a new minimum wage for workers at the federal and state levels. This followed an increase in the cost of living caused by the removal of fuel subsidy. In June 2023, labour leaders called on the government to increase the minimum wage from N30,000 to N200,000 to meet the current economic realities. The minimum wage was last reviewed in April 2019 from N18,000 to N30,000. https://.ng/2024/01/29/tinubu-approves-inauguration-of-committee-on-new-minimum-wage/

Rights activist, Deji Adeyanju has blamed the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike for the rising insecurity in Abuja. Adeyanju said the demolition of poor people’s homes on Wike’s order was responsible for the rising cases of insecurity in the FCT. He said the destruction of their livelihood had led to the resorting to kidnappings and other crimes in FCT as a means of sustenance. A statement by Adeyanju said: “Rather than adequately relocating these individuals and providing them with alternative means of sustenance, the Minister has callously sent them to the streets, exacerbating the desperation and criminal activities in the city. “The Minister’s negligence and failure to address their needs and concerns have inadvertently created a vicious cycle of crime and victimization. “It is important to note that, when the poor no longer have what to eat, they will eat the rich. “It is time for the FCT Minister to fulfill his duty and for the security agencies to demonstrate their commitment to protecting the lives and dignity of the people. “The residents of Abuja deserve nothing less than a safe and secure environment in which to live, work, and thrive.” The Abuja-based lawyer charged security agents to enhance their intelligence-gathering capabilities to ensure the capital city is safe. https://.ng/2024/01/20/wikes-negligence-behind-kidnappings-killings-in-fct-adeyanju/

An Umuahia-based Radio/TV online station, ABN, was on Tuesday thrown into darkness after a guest, Mr Udensi Donald, who was on a live programme, was arrested by policemen. Donald, who was live on a program “Youth Rendezvous”, was whisked away by policemen who broke into the studio of the station located in front of Matter Dei Cathedral, the headquarters of Catholic Diocese of Umuahia, the Abia State capital. The officers, who brandished their identity cards on entering the live studio, initially refused to state the offense of the man they came to arrest but later said he was wanted because of a petition written by someone. From a trending viral video on social media shared by some viewers, the staff of ABN and the guests were seen pleading with the policemen to allow the program to end or to explain his offense before arresting him. The officers refused their plea and arrested the man, bringing the programme to an abrupt end. Speaking to newsmen on Wednesday morning about the incident, the Director of ABN Radio/TV, Mr Ifeanyi Okali, decried the actions of the policemen, saying that microphone, laptop and camera were damaged during the struggle to arrest the guest. He narrated that the invasion happened at about 2:40 pm on Tuesday, adding that the police claimed an elder brother to his guest wrote a petition against him over a family matter. “We find this very provocative and indeed an act of overzealousness by the officers who obviously acted in clear contravention of rule of engagement. “It clearly also negates the enhanced police-civil relations which the Commissioner of Police, CP Kene Onwuemelie, has consistently campaigned for,” he said. Okali lamented that staff of ABN who were invited by the Abia State Police Commissioner to explain what happened, were allegedly harassed by police officers at the CP’s office who again threatened to arrest them. He described the invasion as unprovoked, demanding the replacement of destroyed equipment and an apology from the Abia State Police Command. The Command was yet to react to ABN management’s statement as the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Maureen Chinaka, did not pick her phone call and did not respond to messages sent to her at the time of writing this report. https://.ng/2024/01/17/police-storm-radio-tv-station-arrest-guest-during-live-programme-in-umuahia/

In the trending documentary by BBC Africa, Ajoke, who said she is TB Joshua’s child from another woman, also alleged that the late prophet sexually abused some women in the church. Speaking with BBC, Ajoke said she was pulled out of school and taken to the church in Lagos at age seven and locked up in the disciples’ room where she was forced to be part of the group. She accused the late prophet of brainwashing the disciples to the point that nobody could question his actions and instructions. “The disciples were both brainwashed and enablers. Everybody was just acting based on command — like zombies. Nobody was questioning anything. “My dad had fear, constant fear. He was very afraid that someone would speak up.” Ajoke narrated how she suffered consistent abuse from her father in the church because “my existence as a child from another mother undermined everything he claimed to stand for”. She claimed she was beaten for wetting the bed at age seven and then forced to walk around the compound with a sign around her neck that read: “I am a bedwetter”. “I couldn’t take it any more.
