The Biafra struggle of 1967 was stopped by the federal govt then because there was a Succession clause which was supported by Nnamdi Azikiwe, the there two leaders were against it (Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Sir Ahmadu Bello).

Awolowo insisted that there must be a clause that would allow any region to leave the region anytime, but Azikiwe said no, he urge the colonial masters to jail Awolowo should be insist on including the clause.

In 1954, Ahmadu Bello, the then northern leaders wanted the North to leave Nigeria.
