In Nigeria, where corruption is part of daily life, police officers routinely demand bribes, local government leaders pocket money meant for schools and the former national security advisor is accused of stealing billions from the military. As part of a week-long series "Nigeria: Pain and Promise," special correspondent Nick Schifrin reports on the challenges of fighting corruption. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_r5PWtPB_og Source: http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/how-a-cancer-of-corruption-steals-nigerian-oil-weapons-and-lives/ |
The make or mar budget prep. Baba our confidence is with you. |
Baba has vision for this country. Even the bible stated that when men lack vision, nations perish.... He is setting up Amaechi for success as transporation minister. I know by the end of 2016 we will score this government high on performance. cc: Lalasticlala |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday pledged that his administration would correct lapses hindering the smooth implementation of rail development agreements signed between Nigeria and China. The President, who gave this assurance in a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, noted that the agreements were signed under past administrations for the development of rail transportation in Nigeria. XI Jinping, President, People’s Republic of China at the sidelines of the Johannesburg Summit of Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in South Africa on 4th Dec 2015 It stated that President Buhari was speaking at bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping at the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Johannesburg, South Africa. “Federal Government would strive to fulfil Nigeria’s obligations under the agreements as their implementation would help to boost the country’s economy and generate thousands of new jobs. “I have looked into the previous agreements and we will now keep our part of the bargain’’, he further assured. The President applauded China’s ongoing support for the development of Nigeria’s agricultural sector. He noted that Chinese advisers deployed to some states of the federation were helping to train farmers on water conservation and the use of more productive seeds. In his remarks, the statement quoted President Jinping as describing Nigeria as a very important ally of China in Africa, saying that the two countries needed to boost their bilateral relations, for the good of their citizens. He said that China was keen to work with Nigeria for the mutual benefit of both countries. At the opening session of the summit attended by President Buhari and more than 30 other African leaders, the Chinese President had pledged 60 billion dollars of new development aid to African countries. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/12/nigeria-to-correct-lapses-in-rail-development-agreements-with-chinasays-buhari/ |
hahn:Alot of people on this side of the world are mentally lazy! After seeing how states allocations are squandered year in year out, someone will sit down and assume that a brand new country will just wish away all our previous corrupt antecedents and problems. We need to get the basic right where we are. Is it not the same Dasuki, Dokpesi, Fayose, Aregbe, Atiku, Bala Mohammed, Tompolo, GEJ, Odili, Asari, Ekweremadu, Peter Obi, Saraki etc that will be in the newly formed countries? |
hahn:Double post |
FOLYKAZE:You dey mind these people? They will not undertake indepth analysis before making unsubstantiated claims. |
OFFICIAL336:Loser mentality. You can't be adept in politics with that mentality. |
macof:Lool you make me laugh! Why are the banks crying because of TSA? All the government monies in commercial banks come from oil sales in case you are not aware. If you shut down the oil industry in Nigeria today, even groundnut seller business will feel the heat. That's why Nigeria is a mono economy and we have been screaming for diversification. I will like to know the volume of discovered oil reserves in Oodua Reoublic today let's compare notes. How much is cocoa or cotton commodity price today? Lool. It is easy to speak that Yoruba can do without Nigeria but all the IGR (taxes) that Lagos rely on are oil related directly or indirectly. Ever since the militancy chased many oil companies from PH and Warri, alot of them are HQ'd in Lagos. Their taxes and enoloyment will go away in Oodua Republic. Think of the mulitplier effect. That's why I say Oodua will be like Benin Republic at best. |
VonBismark:Many Nigerians still have hopes of a better Nigeria unlike you. Don't worry maybe one day you will witness a refugee crisis with this your Biafra dream. Then you will appreciate where we are and why we need to put effort in what we have to get to where we want to be. |
Baba laying the foundation for a great future ahead. Miscreants are trying to derail Baba. Wailers una dooh. Dasuki et al go hear ween! |
EmoBoy:That was the question I asked you in the beginning. Countries that have seceded in recent times, how are they fairing? Give me all the countries that seceeded in the past 50 years and how they're fairing today. Look to be honest with you, if Biafra were to happen today, no one has a plan how the system will run.... Regulatory system, power sharing, law enforcement, banking and finance protocol, national security etc. It is better to fix what we have today than to think that reinventing the wheel will solve our problems. What the SE is undergoing in Nigeria is not any worse than what the rest of the country is undergoing. In fact the SS is worse than the SE yet no agitations. I assure you that the Igbos are shooting themselves in the foot politically but they don't know. How can you trust an Igbo man/woman to be Nigeria's president when secession is all he/she is thinking of? |
EmoBoy:What do you mean nobody cares about the Niger Delta? That's how you people that agitate for Biafra look down on the people of the SS. Go and read how long it took established countries like China, USA, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Australia, Japan, Singapore to be what they are today. Brazil. Russia, India, South Africa are still struggling to get there and they have been practising continous democracy for greater than 16 years. I wish Nigeria well, that's why I am trying to help you reason yourself out of the moronic idea of secession. |
patrick89:Look at this from Wikipedia. Let HongKong secede from China and let's see the outcome You insult people without basis.
|
EmoBoy:You write like a child. So naïve. Like I said you have not thought this Biafra plan out well and it is clear to even the educated Igbos that it will not work out well. So corruption and economic hardship are not affecting Nigeria abi? You think western powers will allow you to split Nigeria as you deem fit without intervening to protect oil installations in the Niger Delta? Nigeria's back up plan is democracy and the entrenchment of the rule of law which we are trying to get through the current government. By 2019, we will give them their scorecard like we gave GEJ /PDP in 2015. Slow and steady wins the race. When the Igbos were enjoying the largesse under GEJ how come they didn't secede? It is not by gra gra. |
EmoBoy:Kai these my black brothers...you need everything to be explained to you in black & white! Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Jordan. Only Tunisia achieved the objective of the Arab Spring. While Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Jordan saw no changes, Libya, Egypt and Syria are worse off today. That's a success rate of 1/7 or 14%. If you are asked to invest your life savings in a business venture with a chances of making profit at 1/7, chance of making loss of 3/7 (43%) or you will not make loss or profit chance of 3/7 (43%), will you make such an investment? No, that is if you have sense. That's exactly what you're doing with Biafra. What is your fall back plan if Biafra doesn't turn out as planned? Another example is to look at countries that seceded recently in Africa ...South Sudan, Eritrea... Are they better off than they were before they seceeded? You can fix a steady democracy over time but you will have more difficulty directing how a secession will go. Is it Nnamdi Kanu that will be the first president of these Biafra of your dreams? Ordinary MASSOB and IPOB can't even agree on your strategy. What will happen to Ekweremadu, Anyim, Obiano, Peter Obi, Okorocha, Ngige, Onu etc in this Biafra? You people have not thought this thing through. |
EmoBoy:I will give you a very simple example: the Arab Spring. How many countries have come out of it in one piece? Steady Democracy has a better chance of success in nation building than revolution. Go and check history. Our 4th republic is a baby...just 16 years old. We are focusing on the wrong solution by asking for secession. |
Gayigaskia:You have made a very sensible post. Instead of us to contribute in building one country like the Chinese have, we are becoming chronic secessionists! Leave these Biafra agitators who have lost all common sense to Kanu's personal ambition. Africa is replete with a lot of examples of what a splintered Nigeria will look like. Imagine them attacking me for saying SW states are better run than other parts of Nigeria. I am not Yoruba but that's just the truth. No wonder you people voted for Dasuki and GEJ type of rulers because you dont like the truth. Sense is surely not common. |
None of you agitating people is a serious human being Which of you has been able to manage your ordinary states properly. Which state is truly sustainable if oil stops flowing in Nigeria today? In all honesty no region can manage itself based on how the states have fared so far. The best run states are in the SW but we all know that all their revenue are tied to Nigeria's oil industry directly or not. If Oodua Republic goes on its own, it will lose the oil businesses from the Nigeria Delta and other ancillary businesses like oil servicing, banking and IT that benefit from the oil industry. It will be like Benin Republic but it may be worse off because theres no Nigeria to rely on for car imports revenue. Biafra is a waste of time because they cannot even decide who belongs to it or not. The SS will not go with Biafra. That is certain. Infighting will kill the Igbo dominated country if it sees the light of day. I see South Sudan in Biafra at best. Niger Delta Republic will be like Equatorial Guinea where one eyed man has cornered the wealth of his small country and left the rest in poverty while the West turns its face the other way because western IOCs are benefiting form the oil. Is it Tompolo or Boyloaf that will be president now that DSP Alams is dead? The strongest armed militant will be president for sure. Arewa Republic is definitely unsustainable or will be like Niger Republic at best but with the squabbles that Sudan had before the split. Because the northern Christian minorities will know no peace and will not sit back. The problem is that almost every northern state has them- minorities. How do you even draw the map of this Arewa Republic without satisfying only the Muslims? The middle belt may be closest to self sustenance because their agricultural potentials are immense. But a landlocked country full of illiterates and so many tribes... That is another Rwanda waiting to happen. Igala vs Ebira, Tiv vs Jukun, Berom vs Fulani. I pity you guys. We better put all hands on deck and make Nigeria work. Our diversity and strategic position in Africa is our best chance as a race. Lalasticlala come and see how Nigerians reason.... |
Make them no tone down o... Because they won't be spared... That's how Dokpesi started changing tune about how GEJ is the reason PDP lost the 2015 elections because he saw what was coming his way. All na flash.... Buhari takes no prisoners. If you shared in public funds loot you will vomit them. |
Saraki |
The truth is none of these politicians has the courage to sue Sahara Reporters in the US before they expose themselves to FBI investigations in other matters. Is it Saraki, Dasuki abi Ben Bruce? You can't come to equity with dirty hands. Who will bell the cat? |
whirlwind7:It goes to show how bad the situation was. At some point Boko Haram was in control of 22 LGAs. Borno State is one of the largest landmass in Nigeria. Remember when BBC and CNN were comparing the size of Sambisa forest to that of Belgium in Europe It is a huge task and the massive corruption under GEJ worsened the matters. Nigeria Armed Forces are making progress but like the economy, I don't expect final success in a few months. Our role is to support the government and criticise where absolutely necessary. |
Technocrat1759:I think these mods are asleep.... You are right if it is stealing now you will hear so much noise and jail term but as na corruption it won't get much attention. Im just quoting some peoples' superhero- GEJ. The poor will keep suffering... Where is Lalasticlala? |
This country was sold to the elite under GEJ and PDP while soldiers were being slaughtered left right and center.. God will judge these thieves after Sai Baba has finished with them. |
Nigerians, abeg see gobe... Una money was shared in Abuja l while blood is being shared in Brono.... |
A source at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has linked former Governor Peter Odili of Rivers State and a once convicted top member of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bode George, with receiving N100 million each from the former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (ret.). https://saharareporters.com/sites/default/files/styles/normal_medium/public/Bode-George-Peter-Odili-scam.jpg?itok=JgDI3QP6 The EFCC source told SaharaReporters that the largess to the two PDP officials was diverted from funds meant for the purchase of arms in order to better equip the Nigerian military in its campaign against Islamist terror group, Boko Haram. Instead, the N200 million paid to the two PDP stalwarts was designed to ensure the re-election of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who lost the presidential election held on March 28th, 2015. A panel appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari is currently investigating the reported theft of more than $2 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the name of purchasing arms. Mr. Dasuki, who was arrested yesterday, initially claimed he stole no funds, adding that Mr. Jonathan approved all his expenses related to arms deals. However, his position changed after he was confronted with the statement written by his former director of finance, Shuaibu Salisu who had squealed on all those involved in the scam to investigators. Nigerian law enforcement agents have so far arrested twenty-one persons in relation to the arms purchase scandal. Those under detention or arrest include former senior staff of the office of the National Security Adviser, a former state governor, Attahiru Bafarawa, and the owner of African Independent Television (AIT) network, Raymond Dokpesi. All the arrested suspected are being interrogated in connection with money laundering. Yesterday, the former NSA, Mr. Dasuki, joined the other suspects at the offices of the EFCC. Agents of the Department of State Services (DSS) handed Mr. Dasuki over to EFCC operatives who have begun questioning him on how he allegedly diverted funds meant for arms purchase into Mr. Jonathan’s re-election campaign. An EFCC investigator told SaharaReporters that some of the detained suspects were now providing useful information after almost all of them initially exhibited resistance. AIT proprietor, Mr. Dokpesi, openly admitted that he received funds from the NSA to run publicity for the Jonathan and PDP campaigns. An official of the EFCC told SaharaReporters that it was “unbelievable for the NSA [National Security Adviser] to be the person allocating money for political campaigns.” Mr. Bafarawa, whose detention was approved by a court order, has stated that he received N4.6 billion from Mr. Dasuki for “spiritual purposes.” Our EFCC source said their agents were still questioning the former governor to explain what was meant by “spiritual purposes.” Our source revealed that Mr. Odili and Mr. George “may soon be invited to explain why they received N100 million each from funds budgeted for arms purchase.” Those still in EFCC detention as of last night are as follows: Shuaibu Salisu, Abba MT Usman, Sagir Attahiru, Evegny Kundaev, Aminu Baba Kusa, Salisu Usman Garu, Bashir Yuguda, and Attahiru Bafarawa. Mr. Dokpesi was released last night after meeting bail conditions. The case of Bode George is instructive, at a thanksgiving service held by him after his release from prison in 2011 in Lagos a Lagosian priest delivering a sermon entitled, ‘A minister and a witness,’ Venerable Tayo Aduloju had this to say according to Punch newspaper: “If you are involved in any shady deal; if you are found anywhere elections are rigged; and partake in any form of manipulation, it means you have not learnt anything from your experience. Real power belongs to God. It does not belong to PDP. It does not belong to any president. “As from today, you are expected to represent Christ. You are an ambassador of Christ. Never again will the name of God be soiled through you.” Mr. Aduloju also charged politicians to shun thuggery, rigging, and avarice so as to return the country on the path of decency. He said, “Shun thuggery. Shun violence. Shun greed. Shun rigging and whatever that can cause trouble.” Mr. George later denounced this priest at a press conference. http://saharareporters.com/2015/12/03/bode-george-former-governor-odili-got-n100m-each-national-security-adviser-arms-purchase |
BH days are numbered. But something bothers me...how come every time the US sends advisors to West Africa, (Nigeria, Cameroun, Chad) BH attacks escalate? The more we look.... |
This explains why the most lucrative period for crude oil sale in the hisory of man (2011-2014) was squandered by GEJ/PDP. Corruption left, right and center. Nigeria has nothing to show for that period of boom. cc: Lalasticlala |
EFCC quizzes Jonathan’s associate who helped distribute ‘slush fund’ Former Minister Dan Etete, the man behind Malabu In continuation of its investoffice.n into the N155billion Malabu Oil deal involving former Petroleum Resources Minister, Dan Etete, and some top officials of the Goodluck Jonathan administration, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Monday interrogated a close associate of both Mr. Etete and Mr. Jonathan. PREMIUM TIMES learnt that Aliyu Abubakar, a businessman with interest in construction, arrived the agency’s headquarters on Monday morning on the invitation of the EFCC and was still being grilled as at 6 PM. Mr. Abubakar, this newspaper learnt, is being questioned for his alleged role in the laundering and distribution of at least $523million, being part of the proceeds of the controversial Malabu oil deal. Investigators found that Mr. Etete allegedly transferred the funds into Mr. Abubakar’s account, from where it was diverted into several other accounts of individuals and organizations. This website had on May 24, 2012 reported how the Nigerian subsidiaries of two multinational oil companies, Nigeria Agip Exploration Limited (Agip) and Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company Limited (Shell), paid $1.1billion (N155billion) to the Federal Government in April 2011 for onward transmission to Malabu Oil, whose principal is Mr. Etete. Our subsequent investigations later showed that the EFCC had indeed investigated the deal, concluding that the transaction pointed at a “cloudy scene associated with fraudulent dealings”. The EFCC investigation also clearly established that Mr. Etete’s Malabu only served as a money laundering machine, as substantial parts of the funds was later transferred to various accounts owned by “real and artificial persons” suspected to have links with the Goodluck Jonathan presidency and other government officials. Presidency sources familiar with the matter said the EFCC intimated then President Jonathan and then Attorney General of the Federation, Mohammed Adoke of its findings. “But I can tell you that the investigation suffered a setback since the presidency got wind of it,” one of our sources had said. “There is high-level complicity in the deal and there is therefore high-level cover up. The report is gathering dust on the president’s desk.” Relying on court papers in the United States (where some consultants sued Malabo for breach of contract), checks at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and on its own investigations, the EFCC had established that “a prima facie case of conspiracy, breach of trust, theft and money laundering can be established against some real and artificial persons.” Mr. Aliyu and the beneficiaries At the heart of what is clearly a brazen theft of public funds is Aliyu Abubakar, quizzed for the first time Monday since May 2012 when PREMIUM TIMES first exposed the deal. Mr. Aliyu had very close business ties with Diepreiye Alamiesegha, convicted former governor of Bayelsa state, who died on October 10 this year. Mr. Alamiesegha it was who picked Mr. Jonathan as his running mate in the 1999 governorship election in Bayelsa state and whom Mr. Jonathan succeeded in office after the former was impeached over corruption charges. The late governor played a major role in Mr. Jonathan’s national politics, serving as a major influence, an adviser and at a point, a top campaign official. Mr. Aliyu, through companies co-owned by him, received direct payments of $523million (N81bn) from the largesse. Investigators believe that the businessman, introduced to the president by Mr. Alamieyeseigha, was Mr. Jonathan’s front in the transaction. Sharing the money On August 16, 2011, Mr. Adoke and the then Minister of State for Finance, Yerima Ngama, coordinated the payment of a first tranche of $401.5million (N60billion) into a First Bank account 2018288005 belonging to Malabu. Another $400millionn (N60billion) was, based on the duo’s instructions, transferred into a Malabu Bank PHB (now Keystone bank) account 3610042472 from a Nigerian government account with JP Morgan International Bank. The balance of the funds was reportedly lodged into Mr. Etete’s account with Zenith Bank. Immediately Malabu received the money, the distribution began. Rocky Top Resources Limited, co-owned by Mr. Aliyu received $336 million (N50bn) from the Malabu Keystone Bank deposit. Other companies that got money from the Malabu curious transfers include A-Group Construction Company, also co-owned by Mr. Aliyu. It received $157mn (N24bn), while Novel Property and Development Limited, also co-owned by Mr. Aliyu, got $30 million (N4.5bn). Companies not linked to Mr. Aliyu but got money from Malabu include Mega Tech Engr Co. Ltd, which received $180 million (N27bn) and Imperial Union Limited, $34million (N5.1bn). Some sources had told PREMIUM TIMES that those companies, like Mr. Aliyu’s, simply acted as fronts for political office holders, who helped to facilitate the transfer, as they had no basis to receive such huge sums of money from Malabu. PREMIUM TIMES extensive investigation into this matter had shown how, in order to cover up what is clearly one of the most elaborate corruption schemes in Nigeria’s history, Mr. Jonathan tapped Mr. Ngama, and Mr. Adoke to hurriedly transfer the funds to Mr. Etete on August 16, 2011, a day before the then Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, assumed office. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/194177-the-n155billion-malabu-scam-efcc-quizzes-jonathans-associate-who-helped-distribute-slush-fund-2.html |
https://punchng.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Naira-and-dollar-bills.jpg Public funds that have so far been returned by some past government officials who looted the treasury while in the saddle are currently with the Central Bank of Nigeria, SUNDAY PUNCH has learnt. It will be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari had while speaking during an interactive session he had with members of the Nigerian community in the Islamic Republic of Iran disclosed that some past government officials who stole public funds had started returning parts of their loot to government coffers voluntarily. Buhari did not disclose the identities of the former government officials who have so far returned parts of the looted fund or the amount returned to the public treasury. But SUNDAY PUNCH’s investigation revealed that the money is with the CBN, although the amount could not be immediately ascertained at the time of filing this report. It was also not certain yet the purpose for which the money would be utilised. Although there are speculations that the return of the monies could be part of a plea bargain arrangement that will see the ex-officials returning their loot quietly without being prosecuted, it was also learnt that the President might not have made up his mind on the matter. When contacted on Saturday, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, confirmed that the looted fund was being returned to government coffers through the CBN. He said only the apex bank could speak on how much had been returned to the government. He said, “The looted fund is being returned through CBN. Only the bank can speak on the procedure, and how much has been returned so far.” When further asked if the President was considering pardoning those who have returned their loot or they will still be prosecuted, Adesina replied, “The President has not made a declaration on whether those who returned money voluntarily would still be prosecuted or not.” The Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, had told journalists at Friday’s Federation Accounts Allocation Committee meeting in Abuja that the Federal Government had yet to put a specific figure to the amount of money so far returned by those who looted the treasury, saying the process was still ongoing. According to her, when collated, the funds would be returned to where they were stolen from. The minister said, “There is no figure on the funds being returned yet. The process is ongoing. When it is completed and the accounts are available, they would be returned to where they were stolen from. We haven’t come to that yet.” http://punchng.com/recovered-loot-with-cbn-investigation/ cc: Lalasticlala |
Nigerians are putting this man under pressure. I believe it the end it will all turn out good. Next years budget plans and implementation performance by the end of 2016 should be enough to tell if PMB will deliver the change APC promised Nigerians. Fingers crossed. Goodluck to PMB and Nigerians. We all need it. |
