PoliticsWe Are Free To Pursue Legal Option – Ize-Iyamu by Luckydubby7(op): 4:30am On Oct 02, 2020
The candidate of the All Progressives Congress in the September 19 governorship election in Edo State, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, has said he and his party are at liberty to pursue any legal option they deem fit as long as the peace of the state is not threatened.

In an Independence Day message signed by Ize-Iyamu, he said his party was collating facts and would soon speak authoritatively in the best tradition of rule of law, fairness to all and due process.

He said, “We will brief you all in good time and that time is near. But then, the question is after September 19, what next? We owe you an explanation on the way forward. Indeed, not a few have been bombarding us with this question. Well, we have kept quiet so far, not because we are bad losers, as some unfairly presume. It’s rather because, no matter the situation, we are staunch soldiers of the rule of law and due process.

“Suffice it to say that with due sensitivity to the feelings of our people, we are busy collating our facts. Only after can we speak and speak authoritatively in the best tradition of rule of law, fairness to all and due process. We will brief you all in good time and that time is near.

In the course of our methodical approach, not a few deem to have pre-empted our course of action and pleaded that we do not proceed to the courts to challenge the election result. While that cannot be dismissed as an entirely bad plea, what I can say is that whatever action we subsequently take will be rooted in due process and the rule of law. We will exercise every right available to us under the law, given the electoral facts at our disposal.

Even as we speak, our people should know that the PDP and their agents and privies have instituted 13 lawsuits against my running mate and I. None of them have they discontinued after the election. So, if the PDP don’t pass up their rights under the law, why should we in the APC do so?

PoliticsUzodimma: I Inherited Systematic Corruption From Ihedioha by Luckydubby7(op): 4:20am On Oct 02, 2020
THE Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, has said that he inherited systematic corruption from the sacked governor of the state, Emeka Ihedioha.

The governor, who spoke at the ceremony marking Nigeria’s 60th independence anniversary in Owerri, the state capital, said he equally inherited payroll fraud from Ihedioha.

However, Uzodimma pointed out that despite the challenges, he had made tremendous headways since he became the state’s helmsman in January.

The governor said, “Coming into office barely nine months ago, we encountered a microcosm of systemic corruption and disruption in the public sector. We met monumental payroll fraud in the system; we met a disoriented and disarticulated civil service and a very sorry state of infrastructural provisions.

“Corrosive corruption in all facets of society makes governance more herculean. A horrendous civil war and serial military rule in the short span of 60 years has not helped matters either.”

Politics2023: Lagos Ex-commissioner, Abdullateef, Resigns From APC by Luckydubby7(op): 2:55pm On Oct 01, 2020
A former Commissioner for Home Affairs in Lagos State, Dr AbdulHakeem AbdulLateef, has resigned his membership of the All Progressives Congress.

In his Independence Day message, AbdulLateef said his decision to resign was due to the rejection of his movement and governorship ambition by some “close leaders” he respected in the party.

The one-time lawmaker launched “Iyepe 2023” on Tuesday, a movement to galvanise Lagosians to develop more interest in politics and curb voter’s apathy.

The action led to the termination of his appointment as the Special Adviser to the Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly on Religious Affairs.

Abdullateef, however, thanked Bola Tinubu, whom he described as a great leader.

“When I joined politics, he was there for me and assisted me greatly to occupy very enviable positions in the government. He has developed so many other individuals in very many capacities,” he said.

He also commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, House of Assembly Speaker, Mudasiru Obasa, other leaders of the party, and the past governors that he had worked with.

The former commissioner said, “I am an indigene of Lagos state and an Awori by birth. I, therefore, have a duty to take positive steps including admonitions and practical reorientation of our people towards the ideal society we crave for.

“My desire is to win the pleasure of my Lord which no political position can replace and that is why I am not desperate. I will be totally fulfilled when I am able to make efforts to enlighten our people about good governance, welfarism, the growth and development of the youth, the care of the elderly, the growth of the private sector, the ideals of constitutional democracy, and better lifestyles for the leaders and the led.

“This movement has been rejected by some close leaders I respect. I have, therefore, decided to leave the party in order not to create disunity within the party. Please do not persecute or victimise my followers who have chosen to stay in APC.

“I leave them all in the care of the Lord. I am more concerned about paradise and I am not afraid of death. I will continue to preach the word of God and invite all Nigerians regardless of their religions, colour, and race to be determined to be different. We cannot continue this way.”

However, I don't believe Nigeria has ever had a President who truly loved the country.

PoliticsNigerians Disappointed Because They Are Looking For Results In The Wrong Place – by Luckydubby7(op): 1:56pm On Oct 01, 2020
The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola on Thursday said Nigerians are disappointed in the present administration because they are looking for results in the wrong place.

Fashola who disclosed this in an interview on Channels Television said Nigerians should note that governance is not magic and the results they promptly need can only be delivered by state and local government which are the closest to grassroots.

“Governance is not magic. It is the act of the possible and our responsibility is to always project hope. Perhaps those who feel that way (disappointed) should be made to realize that what we expect of the Nigerian Federal government lies more with the state government and the local government…some of the most basic things.

“What we should do is to focus on the government that is closest to us. I will urge people to go and read the constitution, the powers the President has are about 45, many of them are categorised as power but they are even functions and duties.

“The government that can transform us and give us what we want quickly are the government closest to us – state and local government,” he said.

Fashola notes that basic infrastructure like primary healthcare, primary education, among others which Nigerians clamour for, can only be delivered by state and local governments.

“Looking for the Federal Government or a magic President is why we seem to have been disappointed. We are looking for the results in the wrong place,” Fashola said.

He urged Nigerians to read the constitution to understand better the divide between the state and the Federal Government.

According to him refuse management, water supply, primary healthcare, basic education, etc are all matters within the local and state government and the duties rest upon the state governors.

PoliticsNigeria@60: Obasanjo, Yar’adua, Jonathan, Presided Over Near Destruction Of Nige by Luckydubby7(op): 12:02pm On Oct 01, 2020
The Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, in his presidential speech to mark the 60th Independence of the nation shaded his predecessors claiming they presided over the near destruction of the country.

Buhari in his speech also boasted that “no government in the past did what we are doing with such scarce resources” and that “we have managed to keep things going in spite of the disproportionate spending on security.”

In his attack on previous governments, Buhari said; “Those in the previous Governments from 1999 – 2015 who presided over the near destruction of the country have now the impudence to attempt to criticize our efforts”.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo served as the Nigerian president between 1999 and 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Umaru Musa Yar’Adua succeeded Obasanjo in 2007 but was unable to complete his first term tenure. He died in office 5th May 2010.

Goodluck Ebele Jonathan who was the vice to Yar’Adua was sworn in as the president 6th May, 2010 following the demise of Yar’Adua. He also won the 2011 presidential election and served till 2015.

Jonathan was defeated by the President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2015 election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He will later win the 2019 election to serve the second term.

Obasanjo is known to be a strong critic of governments that succeeded him. The Ex-President In 2013 Wrote An 18-Paged Letter titled: “Before It Is Too Late” to criticize the government of Goodluck Jonathan.

He also wrote a letter to Buhari in July 2019 criticising his government. The Opening Paragraph Of The Letter Reads; “I am constrained to write to you this open letter. I decided to make it an open letter because the issue is very weighty and must be greatly worrisome to all concerned Nigerians and that means all right-thinking Nigerians and those resident in Nigeria.”

Buhari’s administration is renown for always blaming the past administration for the governmental issues it is facing. Some of the occasions his government has blamed the past administration are highlighted in our headlines below:

PoliticsGbajabiamila: MDAs Not Implementing 2020 Budget by Luckydubby7(op): 9:17pm On Sep 30, 2020
House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has decried the non-implementation of projects and programmes for which funds were allocated in the 2020 budget.

The Speaker warned that any expenditure of public funds outside of the Appropriation Act is a crime.

The Speaker also said the government’s commitment to organised labour, which led to the suspension of the planned strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), must be respected and implemented “in clear conscience”.

Gbajabiamila spoke at the National Assembly while welcoming House members back from their annual vacation.

The Speaker noted that the failure to implement the projects contained in the budget is a betrayal of the public trust, which also undermines faith in the government and frustrates good efforts at national development.

He warned that the House might be forced to take action against those who fail in implementing the annual budget, saying: “I sincerely hope it doesn’t come to that.”

Gbajabiamila restated the determination of the House to return to a regular budget cycle – running from January to December.

“We kept that promise in our first year and set a standard from which we must not deviate. However, there is an ongoing problem of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) of government failing to implement projects and programmes for which funds have been provided in the budget.”

CrimePolice Detain Jobless Youth For Attempted Suicide, Court Grants N200,000 Bail by Luckydubby7(op): 7:03pm On Sep 30, 2020
An unemployed man, Solomon Okon, has been in police custody for over a month for allegedly drinking a poisonous substance.

It was learnt that the 21-year-old, who was a porter at Havana Hospital, Surulere, Lagos, drank the poisonous substance after receiving a letter terminating his employment.

A relative of Okon told The PUNCH that the incident happened in August, adding that the suspect had since been charged to court.

He said, “Okon was working at Havana Hospital and received N35, 000 a month. He was squatting with a friend and was using part of the money to take care of his mother in Akwa Ibom. In August, he received a letter terminating his employment.

“Out of frustration, he ingested a poisonous substance. However, because it all happened in the hospital, he was quickly attended to and was able to recover to some extent. The hospital management reported the matter to the Barracks Police Station and then he was arrested and detained.”

The PUNCH learnt that the police arraigned Okon before a Magistrate’s Court in Yaba for attempted suicide.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, said Okon was still in police custody.

He said, “The case has been taken to court. He was arraigned on August 28, 2020, before Magistrate Patrick N of Court two Yaba. Adjournment date: October 15, 2020. He is remanded in police facility at Surulere.”

Okon, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

It was learnt that the magistrate granted Okon bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties.

Okon’s relative told The PUNCH that there was no way they could afford the sum.

He said, “This young man tried to commit suicide because of poverty and frustration. Rather than get him a job, he is being detained and money is being demanded from him. This young man needs help. He needs assistance. He needs medical attention and counselling.

“The hospital tried by giving him medical treatment but it shouldn’t have reported the guy to the police. Now, we are all running all over the place. We need human rights lawyers to assist us.”

Attempts to get a reaction from the hospital proved abortive as a representative refused to speak on the matter and asked our correspondent to visit the hospital.

“You will need to come to the hospital. This is not a matter that we can discuss on the telephone,” she said.

Attempted suicide is a criminal offence in Nigeria under Section 327 of the Criminal Code and it attracts a penalty of up to one year in prison which human rights groups describe as immoral.

According to the 2016 Global Health Observatory data repository of the World Health Organisation, there is an estimated 9.5 suicides per 100,000 Nigerians.

Reports have it that the figure may now be higher due to a worsening unemployment rate and rising poverty levels.

PoliticsCAN Tables 10-point Demand, Says Lopsided Appointments Generating Tension by Luckydubby7(op): 4:54am On Sep 30, 2020
THE Christian Association of Nigeria on Tuesday outlined a 10-point demand to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), including revisiting the 2014 national conference report with a view to using it to address some problems militating against the peace and unity of the country.

The organisation also recommended reducing the cost of governance if the governments would be sincere in fixing the economy or practise an inexpensive presidential system “if it is too late to return to the parliamentary system.”

The President of CAN and President, Nigerian Baptist Convention, Dr Samson Ayokunle, expressed these views in a statement titled, ‘Pursuing the right path to greatness,’ in commemoration of the 60th independence anniversary of Nigeria.

He said it was a shame that the nation’s political leaders and others who had not done their best in various places of leadership, including the military misadventures, had failed to invest in the future of Nigeria.

He said Nigerians had been paying a “lip service to godliness and patriotism, hence our country is still crawling at 60, while we have collapsed infrastructure everywhere.

“They (political leaders) failed to build an enduring institution, but instead enriching themselves at the expense of the dreams of the founding fathers of the country.”

Part of the statement reads, “We urge President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately sign the Electoral Reform Bill, which has been gathering dust on his table since last year.

“Our elections should be free, fair and credible if we want the governed and other nations to respect our political leaders. Trust is earned, not imposed or enforced.

“Our governments should be sensitive to the yearnings and the groaning of the governed. The era of asking the people to tighten their belts while those in power are loosening theirs should stop.

“Both the federal and state governments must give a sense of belonging to all citizens irrespective of their religious, tribal, and political persuasions.”

It contains four charges of conspiracy, fraud, cheating and forgery.

It was filed on behalf of the IGP by Rimamsomte Ezekiel, a lawyer in the Legal Prosecution Section of the Force Criminal Investigation Department at the Force Headquarters.

The prosecution alleged in the case that Binuyo in January 2017 in Abuja “conspired with others who are now at large to dupe one Babatunde Ajala and his company BMA Nigeria Limited.”

It was also alleged that he “forged and signed as Mr Hakeem Thanni, for Ahad International FZC company in an investment agreement with BMA Nigeria Limited and Mr Tunde Ajala.”

It was also alleged “with intention to defraud and under false pretence obtained $120,000 for Tunde Ajala and his company BMA Nigeria Limited.”
