The All Progressives Party (APC) in Edo State has alleged foul play in the September 19 governorship election, calling on party members to stay calm while party leaders study the result and decide what is next.

Chairman of the APC Media Campaign Council, Mr John Mayaki, said the party rejected the result, citing alleged strong-arm tactics.

“Our people were arbitrarily arrested, many of the figures were fabricated,” a statement issued on Sunday, shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Obaseki winner of the keenly contested poll.

The party further alleged illicit tampering with results, to shore up numbers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and mark down APC’s.

“Areas where we won, they cancelled them. They decreased the votes in areas we had an advantage,” the party further claimed. “They rejected our results and jerked up theirs.”

Stressing further, Mayaki claimed there was the arbitrary arrest of local party members who could have resisted the outrage, while Governor Obaseki was busy diverting attention with a false alarm.

“Obaseki shouted that he was being rigged out and blamed INEC at the initial stage but that was to divert attention from the evil going on in the field,” he said.

While calling on party members to stay calm, Mayaki said the APC leaders were studying the result and would announce their decision and course of action as soon as possible.

Obaseki polled 307,955 votes to defeat his closest rival APC’s Osagie Ize-Iyamu, who garnered 223,619 to win a second term as governor of Edo State.

INEC Returning Officer for the poll, Professor Akpofure Rem-Rukeh, declared the governor as the winner on Sunday at the office of the electoral umpire in Benin City, which doubled as the final collation centre.

I'm an APC supporter and will never because I'm not ready to do what they do to get into power but my concern is that why do PDP of all Party be complaining of electoral malpractice when they enjoyed it for 16years. Infact all the people shouting APC this APC that are products of electoral malpractice because. In 1999 PDP controlled almost 33 out of 36 that made up the country and same in 2003,2007 and 2011 but my concern is that why can't they handle this opposition in a peaceful way. This Edo State election APC will rig and PDP will rig irrespective of the outcome of the result.....the best rigger will surely win. To me PDP is not matured to play Nigeria politics at all. The United Kingdom has said it will take action against individuals who mastermind violence during the forthcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States.

It said the sanction could include restrictions on their eligibility to travel to the UK, restrictions on access to UK-based assets, or prosecution under international law just as it did after the 2019 elections.


The British High Commission in Nigeria stated this in a statement published on its Twitter handle on Tuesday.

This is coming 24 hours after the United States imposed visa restrictions on politicians who masterminded violence and rigging of the governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, in the statement, said she has held meetings with the leaders of the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party on the Saturday governorship election in Edo State.

The commission explained that the parley focused on the need for the parties to prevail on their supporters to avoid violence before, during, and after the elections.

It further said the UK welcomed the signing of a peace accord by the governorship candidates in the state.

The commission disclosed that it would be deploying observation missions to both Edo and Ondo polls while supporting civil society-led observation.

The statement read, “The UK takes a strong stand against election-related violence and just as we did in the general election in 2019, we will continue to take action against individuals we identify as being responsible for violence during elections.

“This could include restrictions on their eligibility to travel to the UK, restrictions on access to UK-based assets or prosecution under international law.”

Nobel laureate Prof Wole Soyinka has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to change his style of governance otherwise Nigeria maybe heading towards collective suicide. He noted that the ongoing governance posture of aggressive evasion spells only one end: collective suicide.

Soyinka who spoke in a statement made available to The Nation on Tuesday, warned against the backdrop of obvious division among the groups in the country as earlier pointed out by Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

He said: “We are close to extinction as a viable comity of peoples, supposedly bound together under an equitable set of protocols of co-habitation, capable of producing its own means of existence, and devoid of a culture of sectarian privilege and will to dominate.

“On Africa Day, May 2019, organised by the Union Bank of Africa, I similarly seized an opening to direct the attention of this government to warnings by the Ota farmer over the self-destruct turn that the nation had taken, urged the wisdom of heeding the message, even while remaining chary of the messenger. That advice appears to have fallen on deaf ears. In place of reasoned response and openness to some serious dialogue, what this nation has been obliged to endure has been insolent distractions from garrulous and coarsened functionaries, apologists and sectarian opportunists.

The nation is divided as never before, and this ripping division has taken place under the policies and conduct of none other than President Buhari – does that claim belong in the realms of speculation? He stressed that no government, however inept, fails to record some form of achievement – this was why it were elected, and it takes real genius to succeed in spending four years actually doing nothing. “What it fails to do, or what it does wrongly, deceitfully or prejudicially is what concerns the citizenry. Continuing, he said: “May one ask what action has been taken to rectify that presumably “nation-unifying” compilation? A former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega; and a former Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, have told the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), that Nigerians are facing “double suffering” due to insecurity and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

They therefore called on the President to do everything possible to address the security challenge even if it means sacking service chiefs.

They stated this in a statement titled, ‘Mr. President, Governors: The Time for Dialogue is NOW’ on Sunday.

The statement was signed by Jega, Onaiyekan, Gen. Martin Agwai, Amb. Fatima Balla, Prof. Jibrin Ibrahim, Mrs. Aisha Muhammed-Oyebode, Dr. Nguyan Feese, Dr. Usman Bugaje and Dr. Chris Kwaja who are all members of the Nigeria Working Group on Peace-building and Governance.

The statement read in part, “Nigeria, like the rest of the world is battling the coronavirus pandemic. However, citizens in Nigeria are facing double the suffering because they also have to contend with rising insecurity and violence across the country.

“The Nigerian government must immediately address the rising insecurity, if it is to succeed in the fight against the pandemic. A recent USIP-commissioned survey in Nigeria found new linkages between COVID-19, instability, and conflict.

“In particular, the survey found that victims of recent violence are less likely to trust the government’s coronavirus response measures compared to those who have not experienced violence.

They subsequently made recommendations on how the Nigerian government could strengthen its efforts to manage the pandemic by addressing the rising insecurity across the country.

“Kidnapping for ransom is an acute concern across Nigeria. The North-East is witnessing resurgence in Boko Haram activity, and thousands of people are internally displaced by banditry across rural communities in the North-West.

“Criminality in rural areas further complicates the situation by undermining food security, as many farmers have been unable to go to their farms for months for fear of losing their lives,” the group said.

They called on the President to initiate a process of dialogue to address the multiple acts of violence from inter-communal and ethno-religious conflicts.

The group said the National Council of State should initiate the dialogue process at the national level while the Nigeria Governors Forum would ensure it reaches the grassroots.

They said the crisis between herders and farmers had claimed thousands of lives and deepened ethnic polarisation but few persons had been prosecuted.

The group therefore called on the Federal Government to order the reinvestigation of all recent major incidents of farmer-herder violence.

They asked the government to sack the service chiefs if it would ensure that things improve.

“There is a growing public consensus that the current leadership of our security agencies have failed woefully, and that our Commander-in-Chief has so far refused to act. This cannot continue. Mr. President, you must show more concern and do what is necessary to improve the effectiveness of our security agencies, even if it means replacing the current leadership of our security agencies,” the group said.

They called on the President to stop paying lip service to police reform, adding that it is not enough to recruit police officers from the community but there is a need to be trained and re-orientated towards building community partnerships and promoting durable peace in the conduct of their duties.
