PoliticsNigerians In Diaspora Charge Govt To Respond Swiftly To Youth Issue, backs #endsa by Luckydubby7(op): 3:20pm On Oct 18, 2020
Nigerians in the Diaspora, under the aegis of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation, representing the American continent, NIDOAS, have advised the government to cultivate the habit of responding swiftly and timely to issue concerning youths in the country.
The group, which spoke through it arm, the Young Professionals, YP, noted that doing so would save the nation a lot of hassles and give youths the hope that they have not been abandoned.
The YP spoke through the Committee Chair, Dr Barth Shepkong, at the weekend.

This is just as the group expressed support for the sustained protest by youths and young professionals against police brutality in Nigeria.
The statement by the Young Professionals was also conveyed via its Instagram handle, @nidoayoungprofessionals.
The group affirmed strong support for youths in the country, while they urged the government to strengthen the legal arm of the government so it could swiftly represent and respond to issues concerning youths, young professionals and everyday Nigerians regardless of their status or networks.
“Our ultimate request is a safe and viable Nigeria as is guaranteed by our constitution.
“As Nigerians, we cannot stand by, while our brothers, sisters and parents back home are demanding and protesting for basic human rights and dignity under the law, which includes a reformed policing system in the country.
“We stand with every Nigerian and youth in particular to voice their grievances, to continue to make our voices heard, and maintain a good representation at the relevant table of decision making moving forward.
“Likewise, we support the need to strengthen our legal arm, so it’s able to represent and respond swiftly to issues concerning youth and adults, regardless of status or network.
“With the withdrawal of the SARS team, our position is that both the federal and state government must sign a document that will see to a public hearing of any agency’s misuse of office, against the citizens and hold accountable to the fullest extent of the court any convicted law enforcement agent or agency that is repressive or abuses their authority.
“Lastly, for the youth and young professionals putting themselves forward on the streets, to advocate and ensure those representing them are held accountable to fulfill the duties that they were elected for, and in honour of victims and souls lost to this situation, we are strongly with you all and stand ready to assist as needed!
“We applaud the effort of good serving public service officers, we also assure them of our support and strongly advise those that have upheld the oppressive and corrupt system to have a rethink.
“NIDOA Young Professionals is not just about our economic impact and image protection of Nigeria in our continental region but also at home with our colleagues and fellow citizens,” the statement read.

PoliticsAisha Tweets Song Urging Buhari To Tackle Insecurity by Luckydubby7(op): 5:14am On Oct 18, 2020
The First Lady, Aisha Buhari, on Saturday tweeted a song from an indigenous Hausa musician sending a plea to the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), to rescue the northern region from the ravaging insecurity.

The 22-second music video, whose singer could not yet be ascertained, shows the images of four military chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police during security meetings with President Buhari at the Presidential Villa.

This is just as a body of northern elders on Saturday urged the Federal Government to order an “independent forensic investigation into the expenditure of the Armed Forces from December 2015 till date.”

The song tweeted by Aisha was with the hashtag, #achehejamaa translating to save the people.

The song said, “Baba, please for God’s sake, consider our pleas for help; baba, please defend us; the North is crying, they are killing our people. They are burning our property; baba, please.”

Northern leaders seek military probe

Meanwhile, the northern elders noted that insecurity and hunger were reasons behind the continuous protests by #EndSARS campaigners in the country.

While protesting against killings, intimidation and harassment of protesters by men of the Nigeria police, the elders under the aegis of the Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development, called on the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to “urgently arrest the erring police officers and hoodlums responsible for the attacks.”

These observations were contained in a communiqué issued on Saturday evening after the expanded meeting of CNEEPD held in Abuja.

The communiqué was signed by Zana Goni, North East; Dr Mohammed Suleman, North West; and Prof Ofa Afolabi; North Central.

The CNEEPD said that the best way possible for the President to restore public confidence in security agencies was, “the immediate restructuring beginning with the sack of the service chiefs.”

The 12-point communiqué reads in part, “We support in totality the continuous peaceful protests by Nigerians across the country over police brutality and call on the protesters to remain focused and peaceful.

“We condemn the persistent insecurity in Nigeria particularly in the North, despite the huge investments so far running into trillions of naira to the Armed Forces of Nigeria. We call for an independent forensic investigation into the expenditure of the Armed Force from December 2015 till date.

“We call on Mr. President to immediately sack the current service chiefs and restructure the entire security architecture of Nigeria.”

PoliticsI Have Not Defected To APC – Umahi by Luckydubby7(op): 6:12pm On Oct 17, 2020
By Ogochukwu Anioke, Abakaliki
Ebonyi Governor Dave Umahi has denied reports making the rounds he has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A House of Representatives from Ebonyi, Chinedu Ogah had claimed on Saturday the Governor had defected to the APC.

Ogah, who is the only APC federal lawmaker from Ebonyi, also commended the Governor for defecting to APC.

According to Ogah, Umahi defected to the APC after meeting several leaders of the party, including President Muhammadu Buhari.

He described it as a bold step and move in the right direction and asked About, Enugu and Anambra Governors to join the APC for stability in the polity and South East.

“Yes, Governor Umahi’s defection to our great party, APC is a step in the right direction.

“We cannot afford to remain in opposition. We must join the ruling party to continue to reap the dividends of democracy.

“I am calling on other Governor in the southeast to toe the line of Governor Umahi and join APC. We have to be at the center, we have to join mainstream politics for the overall development of our zone and the country in general.

President Muhammadu Buhari has done well. Everybody should join the APC to encourage him”, Ogah said.

But when contacted, Governor Umahi, in a terse reply simply told The Nation “it is not true.”

The Governor’s Media Aide, Maze Francis, also debunked the report.

He said: “My attention has been drawn to the news making the round in some quarters of the media, alleging that the Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Umahi has defected to the All Progressive Congress (APC)”.

“The news is a product of a figment of imagination on the part of the carriers as Governor Umahi was, is, and is still flying the flag of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)”.

“It is, however, difficult to observe how people are easily persuaded to believe in fake dummies in the name of rumours.

“If for any reason, Governor Umahi wishes to leave People Democratic Party (PDP), it will be officially communicated and can never be a product from rumour mongers”.

“The general public is advised to jettison such unfounded rumour”.

PoliticsRe: 2023: Sule Gets Automatic Nasarawa APC Ticket by Luckydubby7(m): 6:00pm On Oct 17, 2020
Kwanza:
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Nasarawa has adopted Governor Abdullahi Sule as its sole candidate for 2023.

The party has declared no member of the party in the state should contest against the Governor in 2023.

Sule got this endorsement at the weekend when stakeholders from the Nasarawa West Senatorial zone led by the first civilian Governor and senator representing the zone, Abdullahi Adamu, assured no member of the party from the zone will contest against him come 2023.

The Nasarawa West stakeholders made their resolve known while paying a solidarity visit on Sule at the Government House.

Senator Adamu said the zone is satisfied with the leadership of Sule in terms of spreading the dividends of democracy across the state.

Adamu said they were at the Government House specifically to commend the Governor for his exemplary leadership as well as restate their loyalty to his administration.

“We are here to tell the world that we have nobody from our zone who will contest against you, you are our candidate come 2023,” he declared.

He moved a motion in support of the resolution after which Assembly members from the zone seconded adoption of Sule as the candidate of the zone come 2023.

The Governor expressed gratitude for the show of love by the Nasarawa West Senatorial zone, stressing his major desire was to ensure peace and unity in the state.

The Governor said he will remain grateful to his predecessor Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, who supported him throughout the journey to the Government House.

PoliticsDHQ Threatens To Deal With Thugs Disrupting EndSARS Protests by Luckydubby7(op): 4:36pm On Oct 15, 2020
The military authorities have threatened to deal with thugs and miscreants disrupting the ongoing peaceful protests by #EndSARS campaigners demanding police reforms in the country.

The Defence Headquarters frowned on the violent attacks on the activists and warned the perpetrators to desist or face sanctions.

The PUNCH reports that some of the protesters were attacked and injured by thugs in Abuja and Lagos on Wednesday. About seven vehicles were also vandalised at the Berger roundabout, Wuse, Abuja.

But the Coordinator, Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche, in a statement on Thursday, stated that the military would not condone further attacks on the peaceful protesters.

The statement was titled, ‘Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies assured Nigerians of their safety and stability of the nation, warn against violent protests in the country.’

It stated, “The Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies have observed with dismay some violence-related protests across the country, particularly the increasing number of attacks on peaceful protesters by thugs and miscreants.

“This unfolding event against peace-loving Nigerians will not be condoned. Hence, thugs and miscreants are hereby warned to desist from engaging in violent activities against peaceful Nigerians henceforth, or face appropriate measures.”

The Military High Command encouraged citizens to go about their normal activities without fear of intimidation or harassment “as the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies are on ground for their safety.”

“In clear terms, any attempt to undermine the democracy of our beloved nation under any cover will not be allowed,” the DHQ warned.

Earlier, while addressing Defence correspondents during the weekly briefing on ongoing security operations on Thursday, Enenche had condemned the attempts by some hoodlums to provoke the protesters.

Responding to a question on the planned nationwide protests against insecurity by the Coalition of Northern Groups, the coordinator said the military was concerned by the spreading civil disobedience.

He stated, “We are not worried but concerned and committed. You will become worried when you have remotely been involved; a lot has happened. You know that this thing (insecurity) has been ongoing for 40 years, as quoted by the authorities in Southern Kaduna. I want to say it is the same thing that happened all over the place.”

He explained that the armed forces were always reviewing its strategy and operations in line with the directives of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.).

PoliticsUncertainty Surrounds APC Convention As Fresh Registration Splits Party by Luckydubby7(op): 5:07am On Oct 15, 2020
A fresh crisis is looming in the All Progressives Congress over the decision of the Mai-Mala Buni-led Caretaker/ Extra-Ordinary National Convention Committee to conduct fresh membership registration.

The PUNCH gathered on Wednesday that the decision had pitted the committee and governors sympathetic to it against some elements in the party, including the immediate past National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole and its National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

It was learnt that those who were opposed to the Buni-led committee’s decision were of the view that the panel was going beyond its mandate by planning fresh membership registration.

An APC chieftain, who confided in The PUNCH, said the committee was indirectly seeking tenure extension through the planned membership registration.

Buni, who met with APC chairmen from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Wednesday, confirmed that the party would embark on a fresh membership registration before the national convention, which was initially scheduled for next month.

Buni said, “Please, also allow me to use this opportunity to inform us all that the need for our party to undertake a national membership register update is sacrosanct to our strength and preparation for all upcoming and future electioneering outings.

“The CECPC is already at the table strategising on the national membership registration exercise. The responsibility is on you as able state chairmen to commence the procedure for full sensitisation and needed awareness for a successful membership registration exercise in your various states as we all wait for the final briefing from CECPC.

“The chairman of CECPC and the entire membership of the committee reiterate our unreserved commitment to the full development of our party and continually seek your full support to drive the party to our desired destination. By this, I finally submit that your freedom to express yourself within the ambit of our party laws and regulations in the interest of the party cannot be more guaranteed than it is now.”

After Wednesday’s meeting, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Yekini Nabena, issued a statement titled, “36 APC State Chairmen Pass Vote of Confidence in Governor Buni-led Caretaker Committee.”

The statement read in part, “Chairmen of the APC in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory have passed a vote of confidence on the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker/Extra Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee of the APC.”

Recall that some party members under the aegis of Concerned All Progressives Congress members, had on Monday issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Buni-led panel to release ther timetable for the party’s national convention or risk a nation-wide protest by members.

A former Bauchi State Secretary of the defunct Action Congress, Abdullahi Dauda, who is the spokesman for the group, issued the threat at a media briefing in Abuja, on Monday.

However, a top-ranking member of the party, who spoke to one of our correspondents on condition of anonymity, in Abuja, dismissed the group’s ultimatum.

He said “We were not in the least surprised. As a saying goes, you can’t beat a child and deny that child at least the right to express his feeling of privilege by crying.

“We didn’t expect those who were benefiting from the chaos in the Oshiomhole-led National Working Committee to be happy about the dissolution of that NWC.

“This (ultimatum) is the handiwork of some disgruntled members. They are already up in arms against the planned fresh registration of members of the party. Take the registration done in Lagos since 2011, for example, Tinubu is the only one who has access to it. We need to have a proper record of party members which is verifiable and accessible by members for claims and objections.”

He said that fresh registration would have been done, but was delayed because of Edo and Ondo polls.

When asked if the planned national convention would hold this year as earlier envisaged, the source said the caretaker committee would definitely ask for more time.

Another party source said there were realignments among power blocs in the party.

However, another party leader who also spoke in confidence said “What is happening is certainly not within the ambit of the mandate given to the caretaker committee. The mandate of the committee is clear, reconcile members and organise a national convention. Anything outside that is fishing in troubled waters.”

When contacted, the spokesperson for the concerned APC members, Abdullahi Dauda, dismissed allegations that the group was doing Tinubu’s bidding.

He said “Those trying to drag in Tinubu are those who don’t wish our party well. Tinubu is a thoroughbred party man. He will never do anything to destroy a house he sacrificed so much to build.

“We are doing what we are doing in the interest of our party. We want the party to win elections in 2023 and beyond. It is the interest of our party that is our primary objective, we must first have a party before anybody can aspire to office on its platform.”

He advised Buni to finish his assignment in the APC and go back to his work as Yobe State Governor.

Dauda stated, “The caretaker committee will be going beyond its mandate to begin to talk of a fresh registration of party members; that is not part of its mandate. It will also be wrong for them to extend their tenure beyond six months. If they abide by the terms of their original mandate, six months is enough.

“Buni was elected to serve the people of Yobe State as governor;this national assignment given to him by our President and our great party is for him to reconcile aggrieved party members and organise a national convention within six months and nothing more.”

Attempts to get a response from Tinubu’s spokesman, Mr. Tunde Rahman, were futile. Calls to his mobile phone indicated that he was out of the network coverage area.

Meanwhile, the APC faction in Imo State led by ex-governor Rocha Okorocha has threatened to institute a legal action against the Buni-led committee if it embarked on fresh membership registration.

The APC factional chairman in the state, Daniel Nwafor, told one of our correspondents on Wednesday, that the caretaker committee was overstepping its bounds.

Nwafor said that the caretaker committee must first settle the intra-party issues before announcing a fresh membership registration i.

But the Forum of APC State Chairmen described the Concerned APC group as unknown.

The Chairman of the forum, who is also the Borno State Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bukar Dalori and other members speaking after the meeting said, “Our attention has been drawn to social media stories, allegedly giving an ultimatum to the CTC by a group calling themselves ‘Concerned All Progressives Congress Members.’

The faction of the APC in Zamfara loyal to ex-governor Abdul Aziz Yari’, Alhaji Lawal M. Liman, in an interview with The PUNCH, said he was in total support of any reform by the National caretaker committee of the party under the leadership of Mai Mala Buni.

PoliticsOshiomhole Pleads For Out-of-court Settlement In Ortom’s N10bn Suit by Luckydubby7(op): 5:06am On Oct 14, 2020
A former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Adams Oshiomole, on Tuesday, sought for an out-of-court settlement in the N10bn libel suit instituted against him by Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.

Ortom had filed the suit against the former APC chairman over his comments against him at a press conference on July 27, 2018, where Oshiomhole accused the governor of having a hand in the death of two Catholic priests and other parishioners at Mbalom Community, Gwer East Local Government Area on the grounds that one of the priests had preached a “very critical sermon” against him (the governor).

Earlier on the suit, Oshiomhole had filed six preliminary objections which the court resolved all in Ortom’s favour.

However, at the resumption of the case on Tuesday, counsel for Ortom, Samuel Irabor, submitted that he was ready to call his witnesses, but said that Oshiomhole’s counsel, Festus Jumbo had informed him that they have considered putting up a retraction of the publication and it would be ready within a week.

He said he was applying for another date to take a look at the terms of settlement canvassed by Oshiomhole.

Titus Akhuwa who held the brief of Oshiomhole’s counsel, Festus Jumbo confirmed the submission of Governor Ortom’s lawyer.

The Presiding judge, Justice Augustine Ityonyiman of State High Court sitting in Makurdi, after listening to both parties, adjourned the case to October 29, for a report on the out-of-court settlement.

PoliticsAPC Group Tackles Buni’s Committee, Alleges Elongation Plot by Luckydubby7(op): 4:53am On Oct 13, 2020
A fresh crisis appears imminent in the All Progressives Congress as a group within the party, Concerned APC Members, has given the party’s National Caretaker committee a 14-day ultimatum to announce a timetable for a national convention as directed by the National Executive Council.

The group threatened to hold a nationwide protest should the Mai Mala Buni-led APC Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee fail to meet its demands.

The spokesperson for the C-APC, Abdullahi Dauda, issued the threat on behalf of other members at a press conference in Abuja, on Monday.

He alleged that members of the group were aware of a plot by the Buni committee to extend its tenure by one year contrary to the mandate given by NEC on June 20, 2020.

While accusing Buni of keeping party leaders away from the Edo governorship election campaign, Dauda said, “This act of betrayal to a party that has done so much for him is condemnable. Ondo would have been another disappointment but for the unity of purpose by the leadership of the South-West zone to avoid another embarrassing outing. We cannot hold our peace anymore; our collective silence is an indictment.”

Dauda said the C-APC was worried that if not curtailed on time, Buni’s alleged personal interest would lead to the collapse of the APC ahead of the 2023 general elections.

He said, “We have therefore resolved that we are giving the caretaker committee a 14-day ultimatum to roll out a plan of action/timetable for the party’s December elective convention or face mass demonstration of party members nationwide.

“We demand that a timetable leading to a hitch-free convention be released within the next 14 days. The caretaker committee should halt the proposed registration of fresh members and allow the next National Working Committee members to carry out such assignments.

“Mr President should check the Buni-led Caretaker Committee before it buries the party. Furthermore, we are aware that the committee is planning registration of members which is not part of the resolution of the last NEC.”

When contacted, the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Yekini Nabena, said, “They don’t even have the right to issue an ultimatum. There is no need for giving an ultimatum. If they have any option or solution to fast-track whatsoever their demand is, let them come to the secretariat and make their case so that we can listen to them.”
