The head of COVID-19 testing centre in Kano, Nasiru Magaji, on Saturday said there is no definite date for resuming the test in Kano. He told PREMIUM TIMES that although the laboratory was opened on Friday, they are yet to commence treating samples. “We have opened the lab since yesterday (Friday), but you can’t run samples just like that when you open the lab. You have to do a lot of things. So, we are doing those things up (till) now,” he said. Commenting on when they would resume testing, Mr Magaji said, “We don’t know until we finish everything. In a lab like that, you have to do all the safety procedures before you start exposing yourself. PREMIUM TIMES, on Wednesday, reported how a member of Kano Task Force on COVID-19, Isa Abubakar, said the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control‘s COVID-19 testing centre in Kano suspended its operation due to shortage of testing kits. On Thursday, Health Minister Osagie Ehanire said the centre was temporarily closed because some staff of the laboratory were reportedly infected with COVID-19. He also added that the centre ran short of some testing reagents. But Mr Magaji said the laboratory was closed for routine fumigation which would last 48 hours. For four consecutive days, Kano has not featured in NCDC’s daily update on COVID-19. Nigeria’s cases rose to 1,095 with Kano recording 73 as of Friday night, according to the NCDC. The COVID-19 testing centre, domiciled at Malam Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, hosts many northern states’ suspected cases. Experts say testing capacity is a major step in fighting the spread of coronavirus. The challenge faced in Kano typifies the challenge of testing Nigeria has faced since the first case of the disease was detected in the country in February. About 10,000 people have been tested so far, across the country, less than a quarter of the number tested in smaller African countries like Ghana and South Africa. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/389814-no-date-for-resumption-of-covid-19-testing-in-kano-official.html |
I think this is good news to anambra people. |
Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, has relaxed the coronavirus lockdown imposed on the state and has asked churches to commence full activities. The governor stated this in a broadcast to the people of the state on Saturday evening. Before the broadcast, church activities had been restricted for 14 days as one of the measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. But on Saturday, Obiano asked churches to resume full activities, stating that the worshippers must wear face masks and observe the World Health Organisation’s guidelines during worship. He listed the protocol to include regular hand washing, avoiding handshakes, application of hand sanitizers, and social distancing. The governor announced that movements around the state were not restricted, stressing, however, that all boundaries in the state remained closed. “All food and drug markets in the state are to open with immediate effect. “I will meet with market leaders on Monday, 27th April, for further discussion. When to re-open the schools as well as when civil servants will be allowed to go back to offices will be announced soon,” he said. https://punchng.com/breaking-obiano-relaxes-lockdown-asks-churches-to-resume-activities/?amp=1&__twitter_impression=true |

Chelsea have said they won’t impose a pay cut on their first-team squad in response to the coronavirus outbreak. But the Premier League side added Saturday they had asked players to continue donating to charities during the ongoing pandemic. It has been reported the west London club have been in talks with their players about a salary reduction of around 10 percent in a bid to reduce costs at a time when football has been suspended because of the virus. That figure, however, is significantly lower than the Premier League’s suggestion of 30 percent for all clubs. But that has not stopped the Stamford Bridge side from taking their own course of action as they highlighted the #PlayersTogether initiative launched by Premier League players earlier this month, which aims to raise and distribute funds for charities supporting Britain’s National Health Service (NHS). “Representatives of the Chelsea board have recently held extensive talks with the men’s first team to discuss how they can contribute financially to the club during the coronavirus crisis,” said a club statement. “The objective of these talks has been to find a meaningful partnership around ensuring we preserve jobs for staff, compensate fans and participate in activities for good causes. “We are grateful to the team for having played their role in assisting the club with community activities as well as all the charitable causes they have been supporting in their respective home countries and through the Players Together initiative supporting the NHS.” The statement added: “At this time, the men’s first team will not be contributing towards the club financially and instead the board have directed the team to focus their efforts on further supporting other charitable causes. “As this crisis develops the club will continue to have conversations with the men’s first team regarding financial contributions to the club’s activities.” Meanwhile the Blues said they would not be taking advantage of the British government’s coronavirus job retention or furlough scheme, with casual workers and matchday staff being compensated by the club through to June 30. Newcastle and Norwich are currently the only two Premier League clubs using the furlough for some of their non-playing staff, while Liverpool, Tottenham and Bournemouth were all forced into U-turns after their plans to use the scheme were met with widespread criticism. https://www.channelstv.com/2020/04/25/covid-19-chelsea-opt-against-pay-cut-urge-players-to-donate-to-charity/amp/?__twitter_impression=true |

One of the largest private hospitals in Lagos, St. Nicholas, has shut down its Lagos Island branch. In a statement signed by its clinical director, Ebun Bamgboye, the hospital said the decision was as a result of exposure to COVID-19. The hospital also said it has contacted the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) while its facility has been decontaminated by the Lagos state government. “The safety of all our staff and patients is of paramount importance to us. As such, we are complying with the directive of the HEFAMAA (Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency) to suspend our services for 2 weeks (Saturday 18th April 2020 — Saturday 2′ May 2020),” the hospital said. “We understand the critical needs of our patients, hence we have introduced our telemedicine services where patients can consult our doctors via video and audio channels by calling.” The hospital said its Victoria Island branch remains open. https://www.channelstv.com/2020/04/20/covid-19-st-nicholas-hospital-shuts-down-lagos-branch/amp/?__twitter_impression=true |
