Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Alhaji Ghali Na’Abba, has debunked reports insinuating that he died of COVID-19 pandemic. Na’Abba, who spoke in a video sent to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Kano, dismissed the report as misleading and rumour. He said he is still alive and in good health condition in London, since he visited the UK in the past four weeks. “Fellow Nigerians; I am Ghali Na’Abba, Speaker of the National Assembly from 1999 to 2003. I have been hearing rumours in recent days that I was dead. “I am doing this video in order to prove to Nigerians and the world that I am alive, hale and hearty. “I am a proud Nigerian and saddened that rumours spread about me in such an evil manner. “However, this is not a time to reprimand anybody, I have been a friend to the press and I believe we should do whatever it is to ensure that we live well among ourselves. “I am alive and healthy in London, I am here in the past four weeks and finished my engagements, if not for the lack of flight, I will have flown back to Nigeria. “I am missing home and sad about what is going on in my country; about the COVID-19 pandemic, poverty and deaths ravaging my community in Kano. “A lot of people have died recently in Kano including some of my relations and let me seize this opportunity to condole every family that lost their love ones,” he said. Na’Abba thanked Nigerians and prayed for peace and prosperity in the country. (NAN) https://thenationonlineng.net/i-am-alive-hale-and-hearty-naabba/ |

The Central Bank of Nigeria has resumed provision of foreign exchange to all commercial banks for onward sales to parents wishing to pay school fees and Small and Medium Enterprises. The CBN Director, Corporate Communications, Mr Isaac Okorafor made this known in a statement in Abuja on Wednesday. Okorafor explained that the development was due to the gradual easing of the COVID-19 lockdown in the country and across the globe. He said this step would also help owners of SMEs to make essential imports needed to revamp economic activities across the country. “In particular, the CBN is resuming the provision of over 100 million dollars per week for both categories. “The bank has also made complete arrangements to resume foreign exchange sales to the Bureau de Change segment of the market for business travels, personal travels and other designated retail uses, as soon as international flights resume. “With these actions, the CBN wishes to reiterate that it is adequately meeting the needs of all legitimate users, and our continued capacity to do so should not be in doubt. “There is therefore no need for panic by any end-user that could necessitate recourse to illegitimate sources and spike in foreign exchange rates. “In view of this, the bank has ramped up its surveillance of the foreign exchange markets for speculators, smugglers and other illegal users and will take decisive actions against anyone or institutions involved in such nefarious activities” he explained. https://punchng.com/cbn-resumes-dollar-sales-for-smes-school-fees/ |

Ihuoma Chiedozie, Abuja There are indications that the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund may approve the $3.4bn loan sought by Nigeria on Tuesday (today). Although the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, had on April 6, while announcing that Nigeria had applied for the loan, said the funds were expected within six to 12 weeks, Reuters and Bloomberg reported that the IMF would meet over the request today. The reports quoted unofficial sources in the IMF. If approved, the loan would be among the largest allocations by the IMF to an African country in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is expected that the IMF Executive Board would approve the loan having already approved similar requests for several countries. According to the IMF, about 102 countries applied for aid as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The IMF Managing Director, Kristalina Georgieva, had in a statement on April 7 said the organisation was working hard to respond to the request as soon as possible. Georgieva noted, “Nigeria’s economy is being threatened by the twin shocks of the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated sharp fall in international oil prices.” The IMF boss also observed that the Federal Government had initiated a number of measures aimed at containing the spread of the virus and its impact. The measures, according to Georgieva, include swift release of contingency funds to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. She added that the Nigerian government was working on an economic stimulus package that would help provide relief for households and businesses impacted by the downturn. The organisation has also said Nigeria and other African countries need an estimated sum of $114bn to fund the campaign against the outbreak of the coronavirus disease in the continent. https://punchng.com/imf-may-approve-nigerias-3-4bn-loan-today/ |
Engages CBN on forex rate for petrol importation Okechukwu Nnodim, Abuja Nigerians should be ready to pay high or low prices for petrol following the price liberalisation scheme currently in place, the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency said on Monday. The PPPRA is also engaging with the Central Bank of Nigeria to determine the applicable foreign exchange rates for the importation of petroleum products by oil marketers. The agency’s Executive Secretary, Abdulkadir Saidu, said these while answering questions on the new PMS price regime in Nigeria. He said, “What we have in place is a market reflective pricing system. Petroleum products prices will be adjusted in line with market realities and the result is what we see presently with prices on the downward slide. “Accordingly, price will naturally be adjusted to reflect a true picture of market fundamentals at any particular period, high or low.” He, however, noted that efforts were being made to develop alternative fuels to the PMS by deepening the utilisation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas/Compressed Natural Gas as auto gas in Nigeria. Saidu said this would come into fruition in the medium term and would help to cushion the effect in case of a situation of high oil price. On what the PPPRA was doing to ensure that marketers get forex at the official rate to promote price affordability, he said the agency was working with the CBN on this. Saidu said, “The agency is engaging with the CBN to determine the applicable forex rates for the importation of petroleum products and modality for accessing the applicable forex window by marketers. “This rate is reflected on the pricing template to determine the Expected Open Market Price of the product. This means that going forward, the guiding price to be advised will be determined based on the rates quoted by the CBN.” The PPPRA boss said the price would guide the sale of the PMS in Nigeria, adding that the agency planned to extend the same pricing mechanism to kerosene, diesel and others. More in Home Buhari declares interstate lockdown as nationwide curfew begins Monday Be ready to pay higher for fuel –PPPRA My CSO died of coronavirus, says Tinubu Fire guts NNPC station, 30 cars, buildings in Lagos IMF may approve Nigeria’s $3.4bn loan today Saidu noted that the essence of the price band was to ensure price efficiency that would be beneficial to both consumers and oil marketers. He explained that the market-based pricing regime came into effect on March 19 following government’s approval for the adjustment of PMS price from N145 to N125/litre. “Going forward, pricing of the PMS will reflect market fundamentals. The PPPRA will continue to monitor price trends and advise monthly guiding price for all petroleum products, based on prevailing market realities and other pricing fundamentals,” he stated. Saidu explained that the recent plunge in oil price occasioned by the outbreak of COVID-19 and slowing global oil demand had a direct bearing on the EOMP of petrol, pushing it to a level below the pump price cap of N145/litre. This, he said, made the government to order the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to review downward its ex-coastal price of petrol. Saidu said, “Furthermore, the plunge in global crude prices made it increasingly difficult for government to finance the 2020 national budget as it was predicated on a crude price of $57 per barrel. “The low crude oil prices, therefore, presented the opportunity to address the lingering challenges associated with the under/over-recovery regime and free up vital funds required to develop other key sectors of the economy.” He said the new initiative would also stimulate private investment in the downstream sector and encourage the resumption of products importation by marketers, a development that would revive many dormant depots. Saidu stated that under the new regime, PPPRA would continue to carry out all its mandates such as determining the pricing policy of petroleum products and regulating the supply and distribution of products. He expressed optimism that the upcoming Dangote Refinery and other modular refinery projects nationwide would be able to key into the new pricing regime. https://punchng.com/be-ready-to-pay-higher-for-fuel-pppra/ |
Hours before President Muhammadu Buhari delivered his address to the nation on Monday night, a version — full of errors — was already circulating on social media. Although the version he eventually read was different in some ways from the draft, presidency officials are livid over the leak, TheCable understands. In the draft, the lockdown in Lagos, Ogun and the federal capital territory (FCT) was to be lifted on Saturday, May 2, 2020. But in the broadcast, the president moved the date to Monday, May 4. Significantly, while the president announced a total lockdown for two weeks in Kano state, the draft only said “the total lockdown recently announced by the State Government shall remain enforced… for the full duration”. It appears the leaked version was copied from a Microsoft Word document with the original text and edits included, leading to the repetition of many words and phrases. All these had been cleaned up in the final version read by the president. TheCable understands that the draft was prepared by a member of the presidential task force on COVID-19 and sent to the office of the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF). Boss Mustapha is both the SGF and chairman of the task force. All fingers are now pointing at the SGF office for the leak, although there is also suspicion that the email of the writer might have been hacked. A few days ago, a memo to Mustapha by the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) was also scanned and leaked on social media. In the letter, the forum made recommendations on the easing of lockdowns nationwide. Some of the recommendations — including use of face mask in public, restriction of interstate movement and imposition of dusk to dawn curfew — were adopted by the president. https://www.thecable.ng/puzzle-buharis-draft-speech-leaked-ahead-of-broadcast-but-who-did-it/amp |
