Breaking news ; bredren Rodgers set to be sack if he lose in the Merseyside clash today Liverpool's under- fire Brendan Rodgers 'facing sack if he loses to Everton in the derby' Owners FSG have shown no sign of firing the manager but Anfield sources suggest demoralising defeat at Goodison WOULD have an impact on their thinking Rodger dodger: Lose to Everton and it could be curtains, but a win may change the picture entirely Brendan Rodgers is facing D-Day in the Merseyside derby, with Liverpool’s owners ready to pull the trigger if they lose at Everton, writes Steve Bates in the Sunday People . So far, the Boston-based Fenway Sports Group who own the Reds have shown no appetite to sack Rodgers, who ended last season with a 6-1 hammering at Stoke and has had an erratic start to the new campaign. The poor 1-1 draw with Swiss minnows Sion in the Europa League in midweek did little to lift the pressure on 42-year-old Rodgers . And Anfield sources have suggested a demoralising defeat in the 225th Mersey derby at Goodison Park on Sunday will shift FSG’s thinking. Former Real Madrid and Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti and former Borussia Dortmund chief Jurgen Klopp head a list of available managers who would jump at the Kop job if FSG do dump Rodgers. Have your say in our comments section below Ajax boss Frank de Boer has also expressed interest in work in the Premier League and would also be a candidate if the club’s American owners decide to make a change during the international break which begins on Monday. Senior Liverpool figures believe that 12-day period to be a key window of opportunity for FSG if Rodgers and his stars suffer defeat against their neighbours. Owner John Henry and his management team in Boston are not prone to knee-jerk reactions, especially concerning one game. But informed sources close to FSG point out that while the owners have always been strategic planners with a long-term view over the direction of the club, the game at Everton is a major moment for Rodgers. In pictures — Liverpool train before the Mersey derby: Henry and chairman Tom Werner backed their manager in the transfer market during the summer with a slew of arrivals which will amount to around £85million once a compensation tribunal sets a fee for ex- Burnley striker Danny Ings. That will take Rodgers' gross spending in his three years at Anfield to £300m, and FSG are concerned Liverpool are no closer to winning major titles. MORE: Liverpool legend Carragher believes Everton are derby-day favourites But club officials are also keen to point out that a Liverpool win at Goodison could change the picture entirely — even though Rodgers faces another tricky game away to Tottenham in the first fixture back after the international break. http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/liverpools-under-fire-brendan-rodgers-6565960 |
Preview: Everton vs. Liverpool Download this podcast as MP3 Subscribe via RSS to Everton Subscribe via RSS to Liverpool Who will win Sunday's Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool? Everton Liverpool Draw FOOTBALL By Danielle Joynson , Staff Reporter Filed: Friday, October 2, 2015 at 16:59 UK Last Updated: Friday, October 2, 2015 at 17:01 UK There may be less than a five minute drive between Everton and Liverpool, but they are miles apart in terms of pressure on their managers. The job belonging to Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is under scrutiny after his side's unconvincing start to the season, while Roberto Martinez hosts this Sunday's Merseyside derby at Goodison Park on the back of a four-game unbeaten run in the Premier League. Everton There has not been many times when Everton have been deemed favourites to win a Merseyside derby, but they have been given that title ahead of this weekend's clash. content continues after the advert Last season was a disastrous campaign by the Toffees' standards as they finished 11th in the table, 15 points adrift of a European spot. It is a big contrast this season as Martinez has managed to inject that free-flowing football that made him an instant hit at Goodison Park when he took over from David Moyes in 2013. Everton have just one blip on their record so far in the top flight - a 2-0 defeat to title challengers Manchester City. Aside from that, the Toffees have recorded three victories, one of which came against Chelsea, and three draws, with Ross Barkley seemingly finding his zest again, and the midfield partnership of Gareth Barry and James McCarthy looking solid. Everton have also been boosted by the permanent return of winger Gerard Deulofeu, who is likely to earn more first-team chances after showing his promise in recent games, while Romelu Lukaku heads into this weekend's derby in great form having scored twice in his side's comeback win over West Bromwich Albion on Monday. There is added incentive for the striker on Sunday as he is only four goals away from becoming the fifth Belgian to score 50 Premier League goals before the age of 23. Everton's performances have pushed them up to fifth in the table , but they have shown some inconsistency in their last six games as they have scored three goals in as many occasions and not made a single strike in the other three. A large plus though, which Martinez has admitted himself, is the fact that Everton are not playing in Europe this season. The team struggled to cope with the demands of the playing every Thursday and Sunday, but being able to put all their focus into domestic action is working so far. Recent form: WLDWLW Recent form (all competitions): WDWDWW Liverpool Liverpool kicked off the season with Champions League ambitions, but now there are questions over whether or not they will end the season with Brendan Rodgers in charge. The Northern Irishman has faced criticism for his side picking up 11 points from a possible 21 in the top flight, while the performance of their team, which includes eight new summer arrivals, has been deemed lacklustre at times. Ever since Liverpool lost Luis Suarez last season and Daniel Sturridge succumbed to injuries, the Reds have struggled to find the same attacking prowess that launched them to a title challenge in the 2013-14 campaign. In fairness, replacing Suarez is an almost impossible task due to the Uruguayan's quality, but add to the fact that Raheem Sterling and the club's long-serving captain Steven Gerrard left in the summer, Liverpool have struggled to put opponents on the backfoot, and at times, have looked short of ideas. Just seven goals have been scored by Liverpool in as many league games, and they went five games with just three goals in the bag, but they have been boosted by the return of Sturridge, who scored twice against Aston Villa in only his second game back from five months on the sidelines. Danny Ings has also shown some promise having scored two goals in the Reds' last three games in all competitions, but the defence remains shaky as Rodgers has not yet seemed to decide on his best centre-back partnership. Dejan Lovren began the season partnering Martin Skrtel, but following a few blunders, as well as an injury, the Croatian has had to make way for Mamadou Sakho, who has shown strength but also has the occasional mistake in him. Injuries have also been a problem for the Reds as they currently have Christian Benteke , Roberto Firmino and captain Jordan Henderson on the treatment table, which is giving Philippe Coutinho a lot of pressure to carry the team from an attacking standpoint. Playing away from home has not been particularly beneficial to Liverpool as they have grabbed just one win in their last eight league games on the road, scoring just five goals, but the positive side is that they can return to the top five of the table with a victory at Goodison. Considering that next week is an international break, the feeling is that if Liverpool cannot earn at least a point over their local rivals, the heat surrounding Rodgers will intensify, particularly because Jurgen Klopp and Carlo Ancelotti have already been linked to his job. Here comes the Merseyside derby ... This is a bad blood clash; a clash of the Merseyside. Make una kill una self. Match preview coming soon. |
Liverpool return to Premier league action at Anfield on Saturday when they take on Aston Villa in a game of huge importance for Brendan Rodgers. We preview the clash and take a look at how the Reds could line up for the game. LIVERPOOL vs. Aston Villa Saturday, 26th September 2015 (3pm) Premier League After a dreadful League Cup performance and result in midweek, Brendan Rodgers and his struggling Reds host Tim Sherwood’s Villa for their third game in a week at Anfield. Liverpool have won neither of the previous two clashes in L4 thus far, drawing with Norwich and suffering an embarrassing night against League Two Carlisle United last time out, and with pressure on Rodgers now at an all-time high, nothing but a win will do for the under- fire Northern Irishman in what is reported to be the first of three games he has to save his job. Rodgers: "The pressure is huge but I embrace that challenge. I respect that we need to get results. One win and we're back around top 4." 9:35 AM - 25 Sep 2015 146 82 James Pearce @JamesPearceEcho It is now a woeful six games without a win in all competitions (penalty shoot-out’s aside) for Rodgers’ side and time is ticking against the Liverpool boss who must begin the start of a turnaround with immediate effect on Saturday, against a side unbeaten at Anfield since 2010 and who haven’t won in the league since the opening weekend of the season. Rodgers is yet to register a win in a home fixture over the Villains, who have won on two of their last three visits to L4, and at a time when he is fighting for his job, the Ulsterman simply cannot afford for a similar outcome to materialise with a negative result doing nothing but increasing the likelihood of a departure in the very near future. Team News Lovren, Benteke, Firmino, Henderson all ruled out Sturridge expected to start Lallana or Ings appears the main question Injuries are beginning to pile up for Rodgers, who has lost Dejan Lovren for two months with ankle ligament damage and Roberto Firmino who may have cracked a bone in his back for a number of weeks. The duo’s absence adds to that of Jon Flanagan, the much-missed Jordan Henderson , and Christian Benteke – who will miss the chance for a reunion against his old club with a hamstring problem which he is expected to be out for two-to-three weeks with. The squad available to Rodgers is certainly lighter following the loss of four senior players in quick succession, but the Ulsterman could bring Joe Allen back into the Premier League fold after a tidy first game on return from injury in midweek. Mamadou Sakho is likely to return to the starting side after sitting out the League Cup clash on Wednesday, with Lucas Leiva too likely to come back into his defensive midfield role, while Philippe Coutinho is set to resume his attacking midfield duties after being benched against the Cumbrians. The Liverpool boss has confirmed Daniel Sturridge will return to the side after being rested in midweek, but Rodgers faces the decision of whether the 25-year-old leads the line with a supporting cast of Coutinho and Adam Lallana , or partners the impressive Danny Ings up front. Liverpool’s Starting XI Having reverted to the shape for the last three consecutive games, Rodgers looks set once again to line his side up with a three man defensive line at Anfield, as he recalls some key players to the team. But Rodgers has a decision to make over the set-up of his attack with goals of paramount importance as he desperately searches for a win, with the choice of playing a two man attacking midfield and one striker, or a one man attacking midfield in support of two strikers. With Ings in form and Sturridge set to return, the latter of those two options looks more likely, allowing for Coutinho to play in support of the strike-duo. The rest of the side certainly picks itself in most positions. Despite his shoot-out heroics, Adam Bogdan will drop back to the bench for Simon Mignolet, while Sakho looks nailed on to come back in to play alongside Emre Can and Martin Skrtel in defence. With Nathaniel Clyne and Alberto Moreno the certain picks at wing-back again, Vice-captain James Milner is likely to be partnered by Lucas in central midfield, with the experienced duo operating behind the three man attack of Coutinho, Ings and Sturridge. The changes of personnel to the team would see Liverpool line up looking like this on Saturday afternoon: While finishing and ruthlessness in front of goal is unquestionably a problem, so too remains creating clear cut chances for the Reds’ front-men to finish. With that in mind and Liverpool’s main striker back, Rodgers could decide to opt for extra creativity to ensure Sturridge is provided with the chances to finish off, by keeping Lallana in the starting XI alongside Coutinho in attacking midfield. That would see a slight switch of system with two ‘technicians’ behind Sturridge and with the rest of the side keeping the same look, Liverpool’s XI could look like this come 3pm kick-off time. Rodgers spoke pre-match of his desire to remain as long-term manager at Anfield – the only way he will make that happen is by winning games quickly and consistently. Saturday simply must be the first. http://www.thisisanfield.com/2015/09/predicted-liverpool-lineup-vs-aston-villa-ings-sturridge-lead-liverpool-attack/ |

Brendan Rodgers is beginning to find himself under serious pressure to deliver results. After two wins and two defeats so far this season, he must find a way to bring more consistency to his side's play. The opportunity to put a run together begins with the match against Norwich and he will be relying on Christian Benteke and Philippe Coutinho to deliver the goals. TEAM NEWS Norwich striker Lewis Grabban is available. Grabban, who scored 12 goals for the Canaries last season, has been short of fitness but returned to training this week and is in contention to play at Anfield. Andre Wisdom is on loan from Liverpool and ineligible while Gary Hooper and Youssouf Mulumbu are out with ankle and foot injuries respectively. Liverpool forward Daniel Sturridge and captain Jordan Henderson could both make their comebacks. Sturridge has been back in full training since last week after recovering from a hip operation in May, while midfielder Henderson this week underwent a specialist procedure in the United States in an attempt to cure an ongoing heel problem. They will be assessed along with defender Kolo Toure (dead leg), but playmaker Philippe Coutinho is definitely available again after serving a one- match domestic suspension, as is midfielder Joe Allen having recovered from a hamstring injury. MANAGER QUOTES Brendan Rodgers: "Norwich will be difficult for us, Alex has done great since he’s gone in there, got them promoted, and that momentum has carried on well. They’re a good side, managed really well, and we understand and respect it will be a real difficult game for us. But it’s really up to us to impose ourselves on the game with our quality and our intensity. That will be key for us over the next four games.” Alex Neil: "Going to one of the top six away from home is always going to be tough. But as some of the other teams have shown this season it's more than achievable to go there and give a good account of yourself and hopefully get something from the game." MATCH BUZZ MATCH FACTS Liverpool are on a 10 match unbeaten streak against the Canaries in the Premier League, winning nine of the last 10 matches. The last four Premier League meetings between these two sides have seen five goals or more scored. No side has scored as many Premier League goals against Norwich City as Liverpool (39). In the 11 Premier League matches that the Reds have been leading against Norwich, they have only failed to win on one occasion (W10 D1). Wes Hoolahan has been involved in five of Norwich’s eight Premier League goals so far this season (four assists, one goal). James Milner has run 62 kilometres in the Premier League so far this season; further than any other player. Norwich have run 514kms overall so far in 2015-16, less than any other Premier League side. Lucas could make his 200th Premier League appearance in this match – only three South Americans have made more PL apps (C.Tevez – 202, A.Valencia - 248 and N.Solano - 302). Liverpool have lost their last two Premier League games – they have only lost three in a row in the PL under Brendan Rodgers on one previous occasion (November 2014). Norwich City are looking to win consecutive Premier League games for the first time since May 2013. http://www.eurosport.co.uk/football/premier-league/2015-2016/liverpool-v-norwich-city-preview-kick-off-time-tv-details-facts-odds-predicted-line-ups_sto4916402/story.shtml |

The biggest rivalry in the Premier League is set to be rekindled on Saturday when Liverpool travel to Old Trafford to take on Manchester United for the first time this season. Games between these two teams always bring the blood and thunder. With both teams trying to bounce back from disappointing results, and the trigger-happy Michael Oliver officiating (three red cards and 20 yellow cards in his first three games), the stage is set for another dramatic installment. The last time Liverpool played against Manchester United, the story was about Steven Gerrard and his ridiculous red card, given 38- seconds after he'd stepped onto the pitch. But Gerrard has gone to LA, and Liverpool will also likely be without new captain Jordan Henderson for this match. Former Manchester City - man James Milner , who will don the armband in the event of Henderson's absence, is no stranger to a rivalry with United however. These games tend to naturally take on more significance than a mere three points, but that is especially true for this match, due to the uncertainty and concern over Liverpool's recent form. Without captain Hendo and creative lynchpin Philippe Coutinho , someone will have to step up if they want to get a result. After being dismantled at home by West Ham, Brendan Rodgers will be hoping to right some wrongs and make a statement of intent about the direction of his team. An utterly mediocre Manchester United team did the double over an even mediocre-er Liverpool last season, and a third defeat to their rivals in less than a year would be a bitter pill to swallow. As for Manchester United, their current results mirror Liverpool's with Agent Jonjo's Swansea managing a come-from-behind victory against them two weeks ago. A silly end to the transfer window provided some further drama for their fans to stew over, and may lead to the failed outbound transfer, David De Gea , getting his first start of the season. Phil Jones is out injured and Michael Carrick picked up a knock over the international break. New record teenage signing Anthony Martial will likely start on the bench on Saturday. On the pitch for Manchester United, expect to see De Gea, along with Matteo Darmian, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind , Luke Shaw, Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrara, Bastian Schweinsteiger (say a prayer for Eliz), Juan Mata, and Wayne Rooney . Predicted for Liverpool: Mignolet Gomez, Škrtel, Lovren Clyne, Lucas, Can, Moreno Milner, Firmino Benteke The left side of the team is, at the moment, a bit of a mystery to anyone besides Brendan Rodgers. For starters, the eternal question of Lovren vs Sakho will be playing out again this week. After a terrible performance against West Ham, characteristic of the ones that got him benched last season, Lovren is at risk of losing his starting position to Sakho once again. Alberto Moreno, who's looked bright every time he's come on, may get Coutinho's open spot over Danny Ings. Gomez, while doing quite well in a new position, showed against West Ham that he would need help covering the left side if Liverpool are anything other than extremely conservative in their set up. Assuming United have done their homework, Juan Mata will be targeting the youngster all game, requiring Moreno to supply support and help shuttle the attack forward. This is the type of match where Liverpool will likely cede possession of the ball, and Gomez's defensive stability as a natural center back may be desired by the manager. Ings was one of the few players to come out of the West Ham game with any credit. If Rodgers decides to go with a more attacking 4-4-2 with a diamond midfield, we may see him starting up front with Benteke. For that to work, Gomez would likely miss out, with Moreno replacing him as left back. It seems more likely, though, that Rodgers will take a more conservative approach, and Saturday seems as good a time as any to bet on a return to three at the back to give the side both needed width and some defensive solidity. Daniel Sturridge is in full training with the team. He will not start, and it's highly unlikely that he will even make the bench for this game. However, his progress is still good news for Liverpool fans who can look forward to seeing their star striker on the pitch again soon. Additionally, Adam Lallana and, as previously mentioned, Jordan Henderson are also likely to miss out on the game, along with Jon Flanagan and Joe Allen. Philippe Coutinho is set to miss this game due to suspension. A draw would favor Liverpool, who just need to get something out of this game, particularly without three of their most important players in the line up. Kickoff is set for 5:30PM BST/12:30PM EST, with coverage from Sky Sports 1 in the UK and regular NBC in the US. West ham will cry today.... |
Match Preview Slaven Bilic insists that West Ham United's poor record at Liverpool will count for nothing when he takes his side to Anfield on Saturday. West Ham have not taken maximum points at Anfield since September 1963, when Martin Peters and Geoff Hurst scored in a 2-1 win. In their 41 visits to Anfield since, the Hammers have lost 31 times, most recently back in January, when Liverpool ran out 2-0 victors thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge. Brendan Rodgers' men also head into the match in good form, having taken seven points from their opening three Barclays Premier League fixtures without conceding a goal. West Ham got their season off to a flyer by winning 2-0 at Arsenal, but back-to-back home defeats by Leicester City and AFC Bournemouth have diluted the optimism at Boleyn Ground. While acknowledging the size of the task awaiting his team this weekend, Bilic is confident the east London club can defy the form book and history to spring a shock. "They are a tough team and have seven points,” he said. “They have not scored so many goals but have not conceded many. The results are different. "If you see the players they have bought, they still want to be attacking and score goals. They have quality in every department of the pitch and are really dangerous up front. "Now they have physical size with [Christian] Benteke and the quality with [Philippe] Coutinho and [Roberto] Firmino. "Seven points from three games is what they expected and I am expecting a tough game. But we are positive as well and they have their weaknesses which we need to exploit." When asked about West Ham's wait of over half a century for a win at Anfield, Bilic responded: "That is long but it doesn't mean a lot to me. This is a new game and new players. What has happened over the last 52 years but this is a completely new game." Kevin Nolan left Upton Park by mutual consent on Friday, but Bilic is hopeful that Diafra Sakho has shaken off a groin problem and will be able to feature. Enner Valencia (knee) is still out. A trip to Andy Carroll's former club comes too soon for the striker to make his return from a knee injury, although Bilic is confident the striker will be able to face his first club, Newcastle United, after the international break. Rodgers has now new injury concerns after Monday's 0-0 draw at Arsenal, with captain Jordan Henderson (foot) and Adam Lallana (knock) again likely to miss out. Mario Balotelli completed a season-long loan move to Milan on Thursday, and while long- term absentee Sturridge has returned to training after hip surgery, he will not be risked. West Ham have won none of their last 42 league visits to Anfield, losing 31. In top-flight history, the Hammers' 42-match winless away streak at Liverpool is lower than only Stoke City’s 52-match winless run at Liverpool (which is also current). Team news Arsenal have no fresh injury worries ahead of Monday night's clash, although midfielder Jack Wilshere continues his recovery from a hairline fracture to his left fibula, and is not expected back until after the international break. Striker Danny Welbeck (knee) is also sidelined while midfielder Tomas Rosicky remains a longer-term absentee after knee surgery. Liverpool will assess the fitness of captain Jordan Henderson ahead of the trip to the Emirates. The midfielder was withdrawn early in the second half of last Monday's defeat of Bournemouth with manager Brendan Rodgers later revealing he had been taking pain-killers for a foot injury sustained in training. The return of midfielder Joe Allen (hamstring) remains uncertain while striker Daniel Sturridge continues to recover from hip surgery and defender Jon Flanagan (knee) is out until December. http://www.skysports.com/football/arsenal-vs-liverpool/preview/341207 |

Liverpool vs Bournemouth Preview. After suffering a defeat on their premier league debut, Bournemouth will now travel to Anfield in their first away game to face Liverpool. On the other hand, Brendan Rodgers will be looking to carry on the momentum with a home win after they defeated stoke at Britannia stadium by one goal to nil in the opening round of matches. The cherries started their campaign in the top flight with a narrow defeat to Aston Villa. Liverpool Liverpool had a disastrous last season where they finished sixth, just one year after almost claiming the title. In the first match, Liverpool were far from their best but Rodgers will be happy to see that his team were fighting like a unit and there was much-improved solidness to the backline. Philippe Coutinho seems to have filled the void left by Sterling’s departure, he was constantly pulling the strings in the Liverpool midfield and capped off a great performance with a stunner late on which proved to be the match-winner. Bournemouth were impressive in their first match but were left to rue the missed chances early on in the game. Aston Villa scored late in the game and taught Bournemouth how important it is to capitalize on each and every chance you get in the premier league. Their rise through the lower leagues has been nothing short of breathtaking. Eddie Howe has done a splendid job in his two spells in charge but will be wondering after the first defeat whether he needs to bring some more new players before the transfer window closes. Bournemouth will be looking to keep the ball and frustrate the Liverpool players. They know that as long as they keep the score line nil-nil, at some point the crowd will start getting impatient and frustration will creep in. Brendan Rodgers will know that Bournemouth will not arrive as the lambs to the slaughter house and would be foolish to take them as anything but serious. It is one of the days that they will have been dreaming about all summer long. Roberto Firmino might start his first game in Liverpool shirt this weekend after coming off the bench for brief cameo against Stoke. However Daniel Sturridge and Jon Flanagan still remain sidelined as well as Joe Allen who is facing at least three weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. Meanwhile Bournemouth might give Max Gradel a debut against Liverpool after he joined the newly promoted side last week. They will be without the services of Harry Arter, who has a hip injury and remains sidelined till the next week. Liverpool vs Bournemouth Predicted Lineup Predicted Liverpool starting XI: Mignolet, Clyne, Skrtel, Sakho, Gomez, Milner, Can, Henderson, Coutinho, Firmino and Benteke. Predicted Bournemouth starting XI: Boruc, Francis, Elphick, Cook, Mings, Ritchie, Gradel, Surman, Gosling, Kermorgant and Wilson Predicted scoreline: Liverpool versus Bournemouth: 3-1 Liverpool vs Bournemouth Key stats: Liverpool have never lost to AFC Bournemouth in six previous cup fixtures (W4 D2). This will be their first league meeting. AFC Bournemouth’s two previous trips to Anfield to face the Reds have ended in a 4-1 defeat (FA Cup third round replays in 1927 and 1968). No side won more away matches (13) or collected more points away (44) than AFC Bournemouth in the Championship last season. Christian Benteke has scored 11 goals in his last 12 Barclays Premier League appearances. http://m.premierleague.com/en-gb/matches/2015-2016/epl.summary.html/liverpool-vs-bournemouth |
