Tottenham's Lennon is on the verge of signing for Everton on loan until the end of the season after snubbing a transfer to Stoke City. He would be Roberto Martinez's biggest deadline day scoop and could go straight into the Toffees squad for Saturday's clash at Goodison Park. And Thompson insists Lennon has a point to prove heading into the clash. "It's a good signing for Everton, especially with the derby coming on Saturday," Thompson told Sky Sports News HQ . "He needed to get away, but there is always the question with him of does he have the final delivery?" Lennon was all set to join Hull a few days ago but the Humberside club revealed earlier today they had no chance of singing for England international. His odds plummeted on his signing for Everton this afternoon and he is now reportedly heading to Liverpool to agree terms with the Toffees. |

Liverpool’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea in extra-time on Tuesday night was only their second in their last 17 matches. Aside from losing to the league leaders in the cup midweek, Liverpool’s excellent form has five points off the UEFA Champions League places at the start of the weekend. Brendan Rodgers’ side are one point below their opponents West Ham, although their were nine points between these two on Christmas Day. The Hammers’ 3-0 win over Hull City two weeks ago saw Sam Allardyce’s side end a run of four matches in which they’d only collected two points. The big news for Liverpool fans in this match is that Daniel Sturridge is to make his return to the Liverpool lineup having not played since 31 August due to injuries. It has yet to be confirmed whether he will start or make an appearance from the bench but Liverpool fans are certainly anticipating his return. Team News Liverpool Brad Jones is still yet to recover from a thigh injury that forced him off after 15 minutes on Boxing Day. Simon Mignolet may have also won the number one spot back in recent weeks – the Belgian put in a solid performance versus Chelsea last time out and has kept three clean sheets in his last five Premier League games. Mamadou Sakho was forced off with a back injury on Tuesday and should the French defender not be fit for Saturday we could see Glen Johnson or Dejan Lovren back in the starting lineup. Johnson made his return in replacing Sakho against Chelsea. Kolo Touré is with the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations and Jon Flanagan has been injured all season. Steven Gerrard is a slight doubt with a hamstring injury otherwise Brendan Rodgers has no one injured issues. West Ham United Sam Allardyce is sweating on a few knocks in defence. James Collins has a back injury and fellow centre-back James Tomkins is carrying a knock. Carl Jenkinson is 50-50 in terms of being fit for the game. Cheikhou Kouyaté has finally returned from the African Cup of Nations – it now depends on whether he is fresh to play and whether Sam Allardyce will play him after he temporarily disappeared during the week. Predicted Lineups We’re not expecting Brendan Rodgers to rush Daniel Sturridge in front the start but rather introduce him from the bench. The Northern Irish manager has Adam Lallana, Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho to pick from as his front three. Should Steven Gerrard not be fit to play two games in a week, Jordan Henderson can move into the middle and Lazar Marković play the right wingback role. James Tomkins or James Collins will partner Winston Reid in the centre of the West Ham defence. Stewart Downing plays in the playmaker role behind the two strikers and in front of a trio of central midfielders. He and Andy Carroll are set to face their former side whom cost the Reds a combined £55 million back in 2011. Key Matchups Philippe Coutinho vs Carl Jenkinson Liverpool’s Brazilian playmaker has been in good form for a while now. Good at picking the ball up front deep and running at defenders. Finds space in the midfield, creates chances and likes a pop from around the edge of the penalty area. It will be a tough test for young full-back Carl Jenkinson but the on-loan Arsenal defender has played well this season. Adam Lallana vs Aaron Cresswell Philippe Coutinho is a difficult proposition cutting in front his left on his stronger foot and Adam Lallana too is going to be a difficult proposition for the West Ham defence on the opposite flank. The England international will also be looking to exploit any space left between the midfield and defence. He’s only one goal behind Steven Gerrard as the club’s top scorer this season and can be a real nuisance on his day. Aaron Cresswell and Winston Reid need to keep their wits about them. Stewart Downing vs Lucas Lucas had an excellent game in both legs of the League Cup semi- final against the likes of Oscar and Cesc Fàbregas. He’ll need to be at the races this weekend too as Stewart Downing is in form this season with the Hammers. Only three more players have set up more goals than the former Red so far this season and Downing also has five goals to his name – as many as Liverpool’s top scorer. Liverpool’s Brazilian defender will also be supported by the energetic Jordan Henderson. Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 West Ham Liverpool are in the better form of these two and we think they’ll get the job done. They have two playmakers and goal threats out wide that may be too much for this West Ham defence that has not performed well on the road this season. Brendan Rodgers also has Daniel Sturridge to call upon and he’s a goalscorer. http://soccerlens.com/liverpool-vs-west-ham-preview-possible-lineups-prediction/161934/ No Daniel sturridge again !!!!! |
Breaking news --------- Daniel sturridge returns since August 21 last year when the had a thighs ,calf injury.... Match preview coming soon. |

Liverpool need to gain victory over Chelsea in Tuesday night’s League Cup Semi-Final Second Leg, and Jack Lusby details how they can do so. Liverpool travel to Stamford Bridge on Tuesday to take on Chelsea in the League Cup Semi-Final Second Leg, and the tie represents manager Brendan Rodgers ’ best chance at grasping silverware this season. The first leg played out in mesmeric fashion — the Reds were bold, Chelsea shrinking, and the match-up could have been put to bed were it not for some profligate finishing. Much of this (relative) success was due to Rodgers’ tactical mastery on the night. Poised a 1-1, and now facing a tough away leg, Liverpool need to recapture this tactical thrust to stride to a Wembley final against either Tottenham Hostpur or Sheffield United. But what are the key tactical elements that Liverpool need to focus on? Get Lucas Leiva Prowling The Reds’ weekend draw at home to Bolton was hallmarked by a lack of vigour in central midfield. A partnership of Jordan Henderson and Joe Allen made Darren Pratley look like Yaya Toure on occasion, bursting past the midfield duo. Allen, making his return from a long-term injury, struggled to keep the pace in that game, but this was a mere step towards regaining composure and fitness for the divisive Welshman who, when focussed, can play a crucial role in the Reds midfield. Pratley’s skillset allowed these misgivings to go unpunished, but a Chelsea midfield likely consisting of Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic and Oscar won’t offer the same leniency. This requires a return for Lucas Leiva, in place of Allen. Against Chelsea in the first leg, Lucas was attentive and aggressive, making seven tackles and two interceptions—the same as the coveted Matic. Lucas spoke before Tuesday’s game, stressing how he’s “realised that you have to work hard, no matter what,” and this has boosted his game during his time at Liverpool. In order to protect the Liverpool defence against Chelsea, and keep Oscar quiet, Lucas must return. Focus on Chelsea’s Full-Backs It seems a superficial point to make, given the immense quality Chelsea have in their full- back positions, but this area currently represents one of the Blues’ weakest points, and should be made a target for Liverpool at Stamford Bridge. At Anfield, Mourinho fielded Branislav Ivanovic and Felipe Luis on the right and left flanks respectively, and neither will have been pleased with their output. Ivanovic in particular endured a torrid night, short of confidence and bereft of support. The 30-year-old was extremely wasteful on the ball, finding his intended target with just 58.6 percent of his 29 passes, the worst of any outfield starter on the night. Expect Mourinho to counter this deficiency by fielding Cesar Azpilicueta in place of either Ivanovic or Luis, and crossing his fingers — Azpilicueta showcased poor form himself in Chelsea’s 4-2 FA Cup loss to Bradford City on Saturday. Former Chelsea trainee Filipe Morais gave Chelsea’s left-back the run around in that game, and Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic should look to do the same on Tuesday. Crucially, in this tie, Liverpool must improve on the service to Markovic’s left-sided counterpart, Alberto Moreno, who made consistently threatening runs behind Ivanovic last week. Moreno was often ignored in favour of a central approach, and Liverpool arguably didn’t capitalise on what was likely a rare off- day for Ivanovic. Nevertheless, Chelsea’s full-backs represent a weak link at present, and Liverpool should look to exploit this with probing runs from both Moreno and Markovic. Reds No. 10 Philippe Coutinho should look to them not as a second-best alternative to Raheem Sterling ’s movement behind the Chelsea defence, but a primary target. Revert to Martin Skrtel at Central Defence Against Bolton, Rodgers chose to rest Martin Skrtel and included a returning Glen Johnson at right centre-back, moving Emre Can to a central role. This marginalised Can’s creative talents, and also offered him as a target for the bullish Emile Heskey—although the Trotters striker failed to take advantage of this. Against Chelsea, Skrtel must return in Johnson’s place, with Can shifted back to the right hand side. Skrtel suits this limited central role, with his raw physical talents tailored to a pure defensive battle of clearances and covering tackles. This will be crucial again on Tuesday, with Chelsea’s Diego Costa a formidable physical centre-forward. Pitting Can or Johnson up against Costa would be a swiftly punished mistake — the Spanish-Brazilian thrives on an intimidating approach, and neither would match up to his dominance. Skrtel, however, is perfectly suited to this battle. In fact, the 30-year-old has towered over Costa with regularity, on the international stage and in the Anfield leg of this tie. Arguably it is the mental battle that Skrtel seems to most benefit from in this match-up, and the centre-back thanked former Liverpool man Luis Suarez last year for the “rude words he’d taught me which I could use against [Costa].” Get under his skin and, surprisingly, Costa fades. At Stamford Bridge, Skrtel needs to gain every advantage he can against Costa once more, suffocating his talents and frustrating him as Chelsea’s lone striker—cut the head off the snake, if you will. http://www.thisisanfield.com/2015/01/liverpool-vs-chelsea-tactical-preview-crucial-league-cup-semi-final/ |
