Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will be rested with a must-win Capital One Cup semi-final second leg on Tuesday. Midfielder Jordan Rossiter, 17, will be involved in some capacity, while Glen Johnson, Joe Allen and Mario Balotelli may feature after resuming training. Bolton are set to start with former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey alongside Eidur Gudjohnsen in attack. Lee Chung-yong (leg), Craig Davies (hamstring), Marc Tierney (ankle), Mark Davies & Max Clayton (knee) are out. Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers believes playmaker Philippe Coutinho has come into his own in the last few weeks. "He was outstanding the other night," Rodgers said of Coutinho. "He is that bit of magic who makes that last pass in the final third. "Last year he had [Luis] Suarez and [Daniel] Sturridge to make those passes to but he hasn't had that [this season]. "Up until six or seven weeks ago he didn't have that ability to make the threaded pass through. Once we had that bit of mobility and speed and movement at the top end of the field - and the others around him - that has really helped him." Bolton manager Neil Lennon is happy to place Bolton's FA Cup prospects in the hands of a couple of veteran performers this weekend as Heskey and Gudjohnsen head to Anfield aiming to turn back the clock. "There is this myth once you hit 30 [that it's all downhill]; it's absolute rubbish," he stressed. "I've played against Maldini, Costacurta, Scholes, Xavi - all in their mid-30s." "There's no doubt that Emile and Eidur have certainly made us better." • Bolton won the last meeting between these sides in the FA Cup, 2-0 in 1993. • Liverpool have won the FA Cup on seven occasions - most recently in 2006. • Bolton have won the trophy on four occasions, though not since 1958. http://m.bbc.com/sport/football/30860523 |

Breaking news ------))) Daniel sturridge likely to play against Chelsea thereby boosting Liverpool team...... |
A place at Wembley is up for grabs on Tuesday night, with the Capital One Cup Semi-Final between Chelsea and Liverpool finely poised at 1-1 going into the second leg. A week after a pulsating first leg at Anfield, the top-flight duo meet again, at Stamford Bridge, to decide who will feature under the arch at Wembley on 1st March. Eden Hazard gave Chelsea a first-half advantage last Tuesday after he converted his fourth penalty of the season, but the London club failed to hold out in the second period with Raheem Sterling’s fine run and finish pulling the score level. That took Jose Mourinho's unbeaten record against Brendan Rodgers to four games, and Chelsea have now lost only once in their last eight meetings against Liverpool. The two sides have certainly developed a rivalry in knock-out competitions in recent years, not least in the League Cup, where they’ve now met four times in 10 seasons. The first came in the Final back in 2005, during Jose Mourinho’s first season with the Chelsea, when they earned an extra-time win over the Reds, and they’ve clashed twice in earlier rounds since then, with each club taking a 2-0 win in those meetings. PREVIOUS FINALS: A list of previous League Cup Finals, including the 2005 encounter between Liverpool and Chelsea The pair were both in FA Cup action last time out, and neither managed to advance past lower division opponents. Chelsea crashed to a shock 4-2 defeat to League 1 Bradford City, despite going 2-0 up, while Liverpool were held 0-0 at home to Bolton Wanderers. http://www.capitalonecup.co.uk/news/article/chelsea-v-liverpool-capital-one-cup-semi-final-second-leg-preview-2227228.aspx |

Liverpool have the chance to continue their impressive upward trajectory this winter by claiming the ultimate English scalp. Brendan Rodgers meets former mentor Jose Mourinho as his Reds side square off against Chelsea in the Capital One Cup semi-final first leg. Liverpool Setup Liverpool have several injury issues to contend with, but most are long-standing or affecting fringe players. Raheem Sterling's fitness will be assessed following his return from a two-week break over Christmas at Villa Park on Saturday and could be limited to a super-sub role. Emre Can, Mamadou Sakho and Martin Skrtel are providing answers as a central-defensive trio, while Lucas Leiva has been revived as a system player in the 3-4-2-1 formation Rodgers is using. Adam Lallana was on the bench against Aston Villa and could enter the fray alongside the brilliant Philippe Coutinho, while there should be an adjustment at wing-back based on opposition. Lazar Markovic could move to the left to allow Javi Manquillo in on the right. Fabio Borini scored his first goal for the club since 2013 on Saturday and should retain his spot. Chelsea Setup Mourinho will be on the hunt for trophies and the Capital One Cup counts as one in his book. We've learnt from previous rounds that he doesn't really rotate too much, so expect a near-full-strength side here. Cesc Fabregas, Diego Costa and Willian were all withdrawn 10 to 15 minutes early during Chelsea's dominant 5-0 victory over Swansea City at the weekend, keeping them fresh ahead of this tie. Filipe Luis should continue at left-back following Cesar Azpilicueta's injury in the second week of January. Petr Cech has played all the cup games so far, so Thibaut Courtois should remain on the bench while Kurt Zouma may come in for another 90 minutes if Mourinho is feeling generous. Key Point 1: Attacking Liverpool's Wing- Backs Markovic should be moved to left-wing-back or dropped temporarily, as the thought of Eden Hazard going up against him on the left flank is enough to make Reds fans stomachs turn. The Serbian has proven himself an in- form, gifted out-ball, but he'll get run over in this one-vs.-one. Aston Villa should have been able to work the channels better and stress Markovic with Gabby Agbonlahor, but the attacker, usually the thorn in Liverpool's side, had an awful day once again on Saturday. Rodgers got away with it once, but he can't chance it again. Hazard is 10 times the player Agbonlahor is, and the Belgian will not have an off day. With Glen Johnson still lacking fitness and form, Manquillo seems the obvious choice here. Markovic can switch to left-wing-back— Willian's less of a threat, with a worse end product—if Rodgers is absolute in his intention to play him. He doesn't deserve to be dropped considering the impact he's had since coming in against Bournemouth. Key Point 2: Nemanja Matic vs. Philippe Coutinho Matic, arguably the world's best defensive midfielder based on current form, is a nightmare to play against due to his graceful mopping up of attacks and eloquent starting of new ones. He can transition Chelsea from attack to defence in seconds. But teams have shown he can be pulled around if the player taking him on has enough core agility and space to work in—in addition to cojones to actually try it on. If Fabian Delph and Harry Kane can do it, so can Coutinho. Coutinho will work from the hybrid No. 10 role as usual, and will often receive the ball with the chance to turn and dribble at Matic. He also needs to encourage his midfield duo of Lucas and Jordan Henderson to be brave enough to try to pass through Chelsea's double-pivot and find Coutinho in between the lines. He has the quick decision-making process and quick feet to turn and distribute, opening up so much for Liverpool in the attacking third. If the ball can be shifted quickly enough, and Borini can make space for Lallana, there are goals in this match for the Reds. http://m.bleacherreport.com/articles/2334718-liverpool-vs-chelsea-tactical-preview-of-capital-one-cup-game |

Paul Lambert’s side are desperate for goals. His team face a daunting four-game spell now with Liverpool up first before Championship flyers Bournemouth visit for the FA Cup fourth round, before Villa go to the Emirates Stadium before hosting Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea. In between all that, the transfer window offers the struggling midland club an opportunity to bolster their attacking threat. Attacking midfielder Charles Gil, signed from Valencia, could make his debut at the weekend and provide Villa with some flair in front of goal. Liverpool are not struggling as such, enjoying one of their best runs this season. With Raheem Sterling well rested after missing the Sunderland trip due to a holiday break, Brendan Rodgers will look to add another three points to give his side another sniff at a possible top four chance. Liverpool could go sixth on Saturday if Tottenham fail to beat Sunderland, while West Ham don’t play till Sunday. Elsewhere, Villa sit in 13th but are by no means comfortably clear of the relegation places. QPR in 19th are just three points off Lambert’s side. Stewart Downing grabbed the winner the last time Villa prevailed on home turf against the Reds, while Joe Cole was part of the visiting squad who lost that day in May 2011. Only Fabian Delph remains from that starting XI. KICK-OFF: Saturday, 3pm PAST THREE MEETINGS… Liverpool 0 Aston Villa 1 (Agbonlahor), Premier League, September 2014 Liverpool 2 (Sturridge, Gerrard) Aston Villa 2 (Weimann, Benteke), Premier League, January 2014 Aston Villa 0 Liverpool 1 (Sturridge), Premier League, August 2013 STATS… Aston Villa have won just once in their last 17 home meetings in all competitions against Liverpool, drawing five and losing 11. In the last eight encounters, results have been shared with three wins each and two draws, however just one of those wins was for a home side. Villa have netted just once in their last six Premier League games. Liverpool have won four of their last five in all competitions. Villa have scored the least goals in the English football league this season (11). Liverpool have lost just one of their last seven games in all competitions. Of Liverpool’s five goals in 2015, four have been scored by Steven Gerrard. The former England captain has also scored in three of the last five fixtures between the two teams. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/premier-league-aston-villa-vs-liverpool-match-preview-9983416.html |

Sunderland captain Lee Cattermole is still struggling with a groin injury, while Jack Rodwell will be given a fitness test on a muscle strain. Ricky Alvarez and Emanuele Giaccherini are fit again but Sebastian Coates is ineligible against his parent club. Liverpool's Adam Lallana has a calf injury, and Kolo Toure is now on international duty with the Ivory Coast at the Africa Cup of Nations. Joe Allen, Glen Johnson, Jon Flanagan and Brad Jones all remain sidelined. Glass half full or half empty? That's the question for Sunderland fans heading for the Stadium of Light this weekend, having witnessed six home draws already this season. In all four divisions, only Charlton and York have more home draws, but accentuating the positive must be getting harder after just one league win in 10, even if that win was at Newcastle. A month ago, these two teams drew 0-0 at Anfield, so is it odds-on another dividing up of the spoils? Well, don't be too sure - Liverpool haven't drawn at all away from home this season, one of only two teams among the 92 league clubs who can say that. Simon Mignolet and Jordan Henderson return to their former club with their careers having taken very different courses since moving to Anfield. Henderson has improved so much over the last 18 months, after a hesitant Liverpool start, that he is now the captain-in-waiting with Steven Gerrard LA-bound. In contrast, Mignolet is on borrowed time, and he knows it. Only injury to Brad Jones handed him a place back in the side after he was dropped "indefinitely"; he's done nothing since to suggest that he's worth a reprieve for any other reason than a lack of alternatives. In mitigation, Mignolet could reasonably suggest that he's playing behind a defence so brittle that the greatest goalkeepers in the world would do well to keep a clean sheet; as it is, he has only four of them in his last 32 games. Gus Poyet had a similar decision to make when he felt he had to drop Vito Mannone following the Italian's own crisis of confidence. Poyet's go-to man was Costel Pantilimon, who has since kept an impressive six clean sheets in 12 appearances, including that shut- out at Anfield. Another draw might frustrate both Sunderland and Liverpool, but the goalkeepers would probably gladly take 0-0. Head-to-head Sunderland have won just one of the last four times they have hosted Liverpool (W1, D1, L2). Liverpool are unbeaten in their last five meetings against Sunderland (W3, D2). Sunderland Sunderland have only won one of their last 10 league games (W1, D6, L3). Their only league victory at the Stadium of Light this season was against Stoke at the beginning of October. The Black Cats have drawn 11 of their 20 league matches this season. They have won just three league games, the joint-lowest tally in the top flight. Gus Poyet's side have failed to score in nine of their 20 league matches this season. Only Aston Villa and Burnley have scored fewer than Sunderland's 10 home goals. They have accrued a league-high 52 yellow cards this season. Liverpool Liverpool have lost just one of their last eight league matches, a 3-0 defeat at Manchester United in December (W4, D3, L1). The Reds have conceded an average of 1.78 goals in their away matches this season (only Burnley and QPR have conceded more). Four times in this league campaign, Liverpool have conceded three goals away from home. While Sunderland are the Premier League's draw specialists, Liverpool are one of only two top-flight teams not to have drawn away from home this season. http://m.bbc.com/sport/football/30663770 |

Stoke city no dey joke for Britannia stadium because only Chelsea annihilated them at home. |
With Bradley Jones remaining out of the team owing to injury concerns, Simon Mignolet gets the numero uno call for managing the bars. Meanwhile, right back Glenn Johnson continues to visit the treatment room courtesy of his groin injury and is unlikely to feature in the first eleven. The English striker Daniel Sturridge, too, may remain out of action until mid-January. Injuries also keep Joe Allen and Jon Flanagan off action until late 2015. On the other hand, Martin Skrtel serves a one match ban and remains on the fritz, adding to Rodgers’ distress. That being said the German Emre Can, might be deployed into the latter’s position. The only positive news on the injury front is the return of Dejan Lovren, who remained out of action for a while owing to his groin injury might just make his way back to the starting eleven against the Foxes. Nonetheless, with Mamadou Sakho topping Rodger’s list at the moment, it would be interesting to see who would actually feature. With Rodgers’ seeming unwillingness to deploy recognized strikers of the likes of Rickie Lambert, Fabio Borini or Mario Balotelli; Adam Lallana, along with the Raheem Sterling and Philippe Coutinho, is likely to complete the starting XI. On the contrary, Nigel Pearson’s Leicester City had seen zero success in their preceding games with only the success over Hull City last week. Nevertheless, they still continue to struggle at the rock bottom of the League table. Pearson has by far modified and altered his teams on most occasions, but the boss would be keen on deploying a similar lineup which earned his team that much needed triumph. Sadly, Paul Konchesky serves a ban. Meanwhile, Richie de Laet could be a smart pick at the left. Goalkeeper Schmeichel, who suffered metatarsal fracture is yet to return to full fitness and hence, is likely to remain sidelined from the playing eleven. Leonardo Ulloa goes up against a fitness a test and Jamie Vardy might just return after his ban and run in the Leicester jersey http://www.soccersouls.com/2014/12/31/liverpool-vs-leicester-city-team-news-lineups-preview-match-facts-and-prediction/ |
