NOTED, However the 5 marks for presentation is embedded with some other things like (opening, closing remarks etc) word count takes just 1mark out from presentation..
True that. So this leaves it at 5 *3 (judges) = 15

Hence, 15 points be deducted from UI and UNIUYO

Fynestboi:
I urge Fynestboi to therefore run a word count on all essays and any team found guilty by even a word over should be penalized.

Word count defaulters

THOLULOPE 1631 as against 1200 UNIBADAN
dongraspo 2300 as against 1200... UNIUYO

CC: Luxanne
If 5 marks were given for each criteria, its safe to say that 5 marks be deducted from anyone found defaulting.

So please, compute the above defaulter's scores again and deduct 5 marks form each judges.

Good evening everyone.

I want us to understand that there are modalities for this debate which I will post again as reminder.

DEBATE MODALITIES. 5marks for criteria to total 25 for each participant and a total of 50marks for each team.

1. Presentation (opening, flow, closing,
response to judges questions,
audience questions and contestants
rebuttals)
2. Logic of arguments
3. Strength of facts, examples, cases.
4. Persuasiveness
5. Demonstration of knowledge and
understanding of the subject

These are the modalities upon which each debaters will be graded upon you will agree with me.

So, looking at the essay in question, I'l say the accused placed great emphasis on modality 3 (Strength of facts, examples, cases which in turn addressed modality 4 & 5) and on logic of arguments and presentation you will agree with me that despite his lifting of research works used on his essay, his arguments were valid and on this I applaud him because no dullard can lift that amount of information from the internet and then present them logically.

However, the only area I can fault him is the word count but then again, aint we all guilty? I urge Fynestboi to therefore run a word count on all essays and any team found guilty by even a word over should be penalized.

Thank you.

Yes ma...it's a debate based on an idea - notion. Just chipping in my idea ni...no harm/insult intended. Apologies. smiley
Its all good smiley

I also just did a google search on the words and got responses saying yeah to the usage of both words, but TBH with you, given the definition of the word 'notion', it is more appropriate.

Thank you for calling my attention to that and apologies if I bruised your ego with my response.

Also coming in from one of our judges.

Hello,

Having read through both supporting and opposing motions on the topic "media, a panacea for global terrorism", I must say that both unilag and yabatech are punching with gloves off. However unilag seems to have an edge because there is actually no way you can rule out the media as  panacea for global terrorism but that would be when it is being rightly applied.

We have seen nations go on high alert over a simple information gathering or reception process which has gone a long way in curbing what would have been very catastrophic terror incidents all thanks to the media. Though not yet perfect it is yet praise worthy.

If wrongly applied the media can be an arm of terror on its own but so far any such attempts have been met with stiff resistance and stringent measures.

Those supporting the motion in a nutshell emphasized on the reality that SINCE TERRORISM HAS TAKEN A GLOBAL SCALE IT WOULD TAKE A JOINT GLOBAL EFFORT TO RESIST AND ELIMINATE IT AND THERE IS NO BETTER GLOBAL MEDIUM THAN MEDIA" .

I would have to say that I accept this and concur.

The opposing team stressed more on the weaknesses of the media even though one of the mediums being used by them to push this debate is also the media. They failed to persuade me into believing that the negatives of the media far outweigh the positives as they dealt more on propaganda as against reality.

I GIVE THIS TO TEAM UNILAG.

Good day esteemed Nairalanders. All protocols observed duly.

We are still on the Battle Of Wits Between Schools and am standing in for the co-ordinator of Team 4 - Tosyne2much.

Meet the officiating judges –

Jarus.
Isacolukay
TonyeBarcanista

As earlier indicated on the planning thread, https://www.nairaland.com/2446965/nairaland-interschool-debate-chatroom-third/15#41073706 (all enquiries should be done here please), two representatives from each school are to post essays on the motion assigned to their team which will be analysed and scored by their officiating judges. After this round, two schools shall proceed onto the next round of THE 16 INTELLECTUAL GIANTS where a winner must emerge.

SO, WHO’S GONNA BE DROPPED OUT AND WHO’S GONNA BE LET IN!?

We shall find out after this round, stay glued on!

An interesting topic this was. However, its sad seeing that the Funaab participants had little to offer even after being long notified about this contest, isn't this response part of what the topic is addressing? Self-development?

Permit me to say that the word quintessential aptly describes the LASU participants (Timidelaw & Horlapelumi) right here.

Well done guys for putting your hearts into this.

TV/MoviesRe: Watching Movies/series With Subtitles Or Without Subtitles? by luxanne(f): 10:48am On Dec 22, 2015
Guykhena:
I actually prefer watching with subtitles,we have to admit watching a movie/series without subtitles you can't say you got everything they said, you must definitely miss some minute details in the words they used. But with subtitles definitely your eyes would be fixed on it(most times its like an involuntary action). You'll be able to get/understand informations faster,so when it comes to dialogue scenes you no fit slack.

But some subtitles no dey help matters sha,lol ,it is meant to be simultaneous with the voices right? But in some cases the subtitles appear before the sound comes(more like 7secs lap),so you don ready know wetin dem go talk before dem talk am grin, and when dem dey talk, the subtitle go dey show another thing cheesy . Or in some cases the subtitle though in english would be in another format from what the actors are saying but its still the same point.

In all seriousness, I love watching my movies/series with the subtitles.. Oh you could also pick up the names of some nice soundtrack with the help from subtitles,no sweat.
gringringrin

Can be very annoying, I usually just stop watching such but again, there are times the movie is too interesting you would want to just manage.
TV/MoviesRe: Watching Movies/series With Subtitles Or Without Subtitles? by luxanne(f): 10:43am On Dec 22, 2015
For me, I love to hear every word in a movie/series, infact, in movies without sub, I can be caught rewinding a scene just to get what was said, reason why I enjoy watching my movies alone and without noise 'cuz I hate to miss a word (but that doesn't mean I don't do cinemas, am a huge fan but unfortunatley I've not been there for a while due to busy schedules so am restricted to downloads in my free time).

So to your question I'l say, I also do prefer subs but I dont go all out to find them. Just imagine watching a comedy and you dont get a thing of what they are saying aside their laughter, could be a lil bit unsettling.
