Politics › Re: I’m For State Police, Stronger States, Says Osinbajo by madmohamed(m): 2:48pm On Nov 13, 2018 |
irepnaija4eva: LAGOS — Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has restated that he is an advocate of fiscal federalism, stronger state governments and state police.
Mr Osinbajo made this submission while delivering the 40th Anniversary Lecture of the Association of Friends on Monday in Lagos.
He reiterated his stance that good governance was what Nigeria needed rather than geographical restructuring.
“I have been an advocate, both in court and outside, of fiscal federalism and stronger state governments. I have argued in favour of state police, for the simple reason that policing is a local function.
“You simply cannot effectively police Nigeria from Abuja. Only recently, I made a point that stronger, more autonomous states would effectively eradicate poverty.”
Prof. Osinbajo’s stance on stronger states and state police is at variance with that of President Muhammadu Buhari who has publicly opposed state police.
President Buhari’s non-commitment to state police and stronger states, components of a restructuring of the federation demanded by many Nigerians, is believed to have influenced the lack of action by the ruling party, APC, on the matter.
Although a committee set up by the APC, following public outcry, submitted its report, the ruling party has failed to act on it.
Despite the inaction of the presidency and the ruling party on restructuring Nigeria, Prof. Osinbajo has, however, continued to restate his support for major aspects of restructuring. He recently engaged in a public debate with former vice president, Atiku Abubakar on the latter’s commitment to restructuring.

Politics › Re: How Jonathan Govt Threw Nigeria Into Debt – Osinbajo by madmohamed(m): 9:38am On Nov 13, 2018 |
15Ebisco: Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, has once again accused the immediate past government of President Goodluck Jonathan of throwing Nigeria into untold hardship, recession and debt.
According to him, the corruption that took place under the previous government was the reason Nigeria’s economy was currently in crisis.
Osinbajo made this statement on Monday in Lagos in a lecture entitled, “Restructuring and the Nigerian federation,” which he delivered as part activities marking the 40th anniversary of Association of Friends.
He said, “What do these figures show? They show that when oil prices were at the highest between 2010 and 2014 the government was borrowing heavily.
“From 2010 to 2014, debts moved from $35bn to $63bn. When we assumed office in 2015, the debt that the previous government left was $63bn.
“Today, three and half years later, the debt is $73bn.
“There are two reasons why despite high earnings we are poorer – the first is grand corruption and mismanagement of resources. And there is a difference between grand corruption and ordinary corruption.
“Grand corruption is directly stealing from the CBN, directly taking money from the treasury without any contract, no pretences; there’s no caution, you just take money. That was going on and I will give you several examples.
“When I got to the office as Vice-President, I couldn’t believe it. In one day, $292m was signed out and it disappeared. After that period, for two weeks, the Central Bank of Nigeria did not have cash dollar – $292m without any real explanation! We later discovered what became of the money.
“On another occasion, N60bn was moved out ostensibly for security purposes; but we know what happened.
“When you have a corrupt government, large sums of money which can be used for development is simply taken. If you are the President of Nigeria, you can literally say, ‘Go and bring money’.
“Look at a sum of N60bn; when someone can take N60bn; and $292m, that’s almost N70bn. Today, our TraderMoni scheme is costing us N20bn, where we’re giving to petty traders a loan of N10,000 and when they pay back, we give them N15,000 and when they pay back, we give them, N20,000. But somebody will take $292m, almost N70bn. If you have N70bn, you will solve the problem of seven million of those petty traders. That’s the kind of thing we are talking about and the kind of contrast that we’re trying to draw.”

InoutNaija: President Muhammadu Buhari has noted that he is doing all his best to utilize the country’s resources to develop the country.
Mr President said this during an interactive session with the Nigerian community in Paris, while maintaining his commitment towards developing the educational sector.
Buhari who said results can be seen on road, rail and power said “My frustration is that some people still have plenty stolen money stashed in Europe, U S and other countries”.
He promised that allocations to the educational sector will be improved as revenue increases, describing the sector as a major engine for the development of any country.
“We are currently reviewing investments in the entire infrastructure of the country like road, rail and power, including investing more in education. We will certainly need to do more in education,’’ he said.
Buhari also called on elites across the country to rally round and support the educational sector, expressing surprise that the elites are not moved by the fall in standards and structures of educational institutions.
“I am doing my best now to utilize our resources to develop the country,’’ he said. “ We are already getting results on road, rail and power. My frustration is that some people still have plenty stolen money stashed in Europe, U S and other countries.’’
On war against terrorism, Buhari said new weapons and hardware would be given to the military, while the challenge of abduction and kidnapping in some parts of the country will receive more attention with better gathering of intelligence.
“We campaigned on three key issues; security, improving the economy, and fighting corruption, and we have not been controverted by anyone that we have not recorded some results,’’ he added.

Politics › Re: Nigeria: Buhari Or Jibril? The Russian Connection by madmohamed(m): 4:22pm On Nov 10, 2018 |
MrRobot: In Nigeria, there’s a rising wave of suspicion that a certain Mr Jibril is being passed off as President of Nigeria in place of the real person -Mr Buhari, said by sources to have passed after a ravaging illness awhile ago.
Whether this is true or not is not the purpose of this submission. Instead, what matters here is whether such a switch or deception is possible. To answer this, let’s consider a particular incident in history.
For decades, rumors circulated in Russia that Joseph Stalin had a “twin” who replaced him during certain situations. Decades after Stalin’s death, the decoy finally decided to talk. Felix Dadaev, a former dancer and juggler, had been ordered to work to the Kremlin as Stalin’s body double. For more than half a century, Dadaev remained silent, fearing a death sentence should he dare to open his mouth. But in 2008, at the age of 88, and with the apparent approval of the Putin regime, he finally came forward to write his autobiography. It explains that he was one of four men employed to impersonate the supreme leader, taking his place in motorcades, at rallies, on newsreel footage etc.
Dadaev was born in the Caucasian highlands of Dagestan and when his family moved to Grozny, in Chechnya, he began taking ballet lessons. When the Second World War started, he was required to fight and was so badly injured during the Soviet liberation of Grozny in 1942 that his family was told he had been killed. He was one of seven casualties delivered to a hospital, but he and another man were still alive. Fortunately, he survived, though that “death” was the start of a strange double life. Soon his resemblance to 60-year-old Stalin (which got him teased in school) caught the eye of Soviet intelligence agents, who started using him to save the real Stalin from assassination plots and tedious public ceremonies.
Just into his 20s, Dadaev was a great deal younger than Stalin, but make-up and the strain of war meant that he could pass for the 60-year-old. “We had all experienced so much suffering that I looked much older than I was”, Dadaev said. Trained at the personal request of Stalin, Dadaev attended rallies and meetings across the Soviet Union wearing the leader’s trademark Red Army cap and heavy overcoat encrusted with medals. He watched movies and speeches of Stalin to perfect the mimicry of his movement and intonation. Some say that Dadaev, like other Stalin’s body doubles, was trained by Alexei Diky, an actor who played the role of Stalin in propaganda films.
In an age before media dominated, he didn’t have to mimic perfectly Stalin’s vocal inflections, just his look and mannerisms. He pulled it off so well even Stalin’s closest comrades couldn’t spot the imposter. “By the time my make-up and training were complete, I was like him in every way, except perhaps my ears. They were too small”.
Another Stalin’s body double was a man identified only as “Rashid”. Rashid so closely resembled the dictator that when he joined the army he was dismissed almost immediately. Even his facial scars nearly matched the Soviet leader’s pockmarks from a bout with smallpox. He spent two years studying with Alexei Dikiy. Rashid claimed there were other Stalin lookalikes employed by the NKVD (predecessor of KGB), although he never met any. He claimed to have heard of another Stalin double who was hired to live in the dictator’s dacha outside of Moscow in the late 1940s and 1950s when Stalin was dying. After Stalin’s death in 1953, Rashid moved to a provincial city and shaved off his mustache and gradually became bald. Yet even then the resemblance proved so striking that he often received stares on the street.
So the burgeoning popular notion that a certain Jibril from Sudan is being fronted as President Buhari of Nigeria has precedents in history and thus carries a strong possibility that such could well be the case.

Politics › Re: Oduduwa Group Slams Atiku Over Attack On Buhari For $500,000 Grant To Guinea B.. by madmohamed(m): 4:16pm On Nov 08, 2018 |
Sheriff31: The Oduduwa Vanguard has replied the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over his attack on President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government’s for donating $500,000 to Guinea Bissau.
The group asked Atiku to go for crash course on economy before exhibiting his ignorance. Atiku had slammed the federal government’s $500,000 donation to Guinea Bissau, describing the gesture as wasteful.
According to him, it was one of the ways the President Muhammadu Buhari administration brought a once thriving economy to its knees. Oduduwa Vanguard described Atiku’s comment to a strategic act as irresponsible on many levels.
Aare Kunle Adewole, President of the group said Atiku was not qualified to be entrusted with making decisions for 200 million Nigerians because he lacked patient to fully understand issues before reacting.
According to Kolawale, “We wonder how an Atiku that can donate lavishly to buy cars for women will find it wrong that Nigeria wants to play its big brother role to other Africa nations. This is double standard at play at best and we advise the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, President Muhammadu Buhari not to join Atiku at the level to which he has sunken. It will amount to wrestling a hog in the mud.
“A right thinking person that looks beyond the meanness of satiating only his own avarice would have seen that there are gains to Nigeria when the donations to Guinea Bissau are well exploited.
“For one, a revived Guinea Bissau or any other African country provides fertile grounds for Nigerians to go exploit since we fortunately have enterprising Nigerians that have made marks for themselves in their places of sojourn. We believe that helping other nations to stay afloat when we can is a strategic way of ensuring that our country’s huge population is able to spread outwards to these other places and earn their keep.
An intelligent person will realize that remittances from the funds repatriated by such Nigerians will go a long way to helping the economy back home.
“It is understandable that Atiku is projecting his own values unto others because this kind of donation would have found its way into private pockets between 1999 and 2007 when he was vice president. The absence of such slush fund must have been responsible for his recent gimmick of under declaring his income so that he can keep back some more money from tax avoidance.
“But we ask for once that he should believe in the capacity of other people to be upright where he is crooked. Such realistic perception of others would have made him to realize that the money promised to Guinea Bissau is not the type wasted on sponsoring team members to Dubai or for paying a foreign agent to procure election hacking services from Russia.”

MrAJQ: •As country mulls trip to the space By Emmanuel Elebeke The Governor General of Canada and world renowned astronaut, Julie Payette says Nigeria must continue to operate her own communications and Remote Sensing satellites to be able to share relevant data that can help solve some intricate problems.
Payette gave the advice at the National Space Research and Development Agency, NASRDA, in Abuja, recently, during her state visit to Nigeria.
She proposed the operation of both Communication and remote sensing satellite in Nigeria to enable the country gather data and share information about any natural disaster that may occur in the country with a view to finding a lasting solution to the problem.
According to the Canadian astronaut, the operation of such satellites allows for an opening for collaboration where the needs of Nigeria can be placed where all other communities working together would assist her in tackling her challenges.
She said, “having a communication satellite and remote sensing capabilities in Nigeria opens doors to a lot of collaborations. If there is a remote sensing demand on ground because of the flood or natural disaster, every nation that has remote sensing satellite will provide data, whoever has satellite at the time will now provide the data so that the authorities will use that data to tackle the disaster? Nigeria is in that group.
She said that although there are lots of works on ground, but having the proper data from space has the capability of providing solutions to problems.
“One of the most important thing is that when you have a project like that, it inspires the young generation to study science and technology and eventually become engineers and professionals.”
In his remarks, the Minister of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu admitted that the visit may not only help science and technology grow in Nigeria but could also help the younger ones study science and technology in schools.
Onu, who described Payette as a great woman of knowledge promised that Nigeria’s space programme will progressively advance to the expected end. “Our space programme is progressing satisfactorily. I am very proud of the work NASRDA has done over two decades of its existence.
“As a government, we are committed to space research and development. We will ensure a master plan for NASRDA which includes having Nigerians in the space. It is a vision we will pursue vigorously because we know that through space science and technology we will be in a position to have positive impact on so many aspect of our economy, be it in communications, environment, defence, health or education.
“By the size of our country, space is important to us, having the largest population and largest market in Africa. It is important to join the rest of humanity to explore space now. Through Space research and development, so many important discoveries have been made,” he said. Imperative Of Driving Research And Innovation For Industry
Onu also revealed that “Nigeria has been cooperating with so many countries, including Canada in the area of space research and development. We will like to continue in that collaboration. Canada has been a very good friend of Nigeria and we want to deepen that relationship and partnership.”
Highlight of the visit was the presentation of her personal collections from the space; Training Model of the Canadian used by all astronauts in preparation for their work in space; Photo of her wearing the Patch of her second mission to space on international space station; among other items to space among others.
Earlier, the Canadian Governor and her delegation met with teams of graduate students at the master’s and doctorate levels and teachers who presented the findings of their cutting-edge research. She also delivered remarks where she described her own career path and the importance of science and innovation.
