Politics / Cry For Help By Nigerians Stranded In China by makib: 6:50am On Jul 23, 2009
Below is a letter written by one our Nigerian brothers in china.
please read.

My courage to write this stems from the recent protest of Africans in Guangzhou over the “accident” of two Nigerians who jumped from a second floor window.
Jumping from incredible heights is not new in china. Just a month ago, a Nigerian died when he jumped from his 9th floor apartment when the police came to check his papers.

I honestly don’t know what goes through their minds when they make such leaps. Do they imagine they are superman, or indestructible?
The reason we run from the police is not because we are scared of going back to Nigeria empty handed, no.

Our reasons are because when arrested, you’ll have to stay in jail till your people pay your fines and buy your one way ticket to Nigeria before you can be deported. We are told that is China’s law.

Our people run and some jump to their death because they can’t afford the 5000yuan fine and their air ticket. Some Nigerians have been in jail for as long as six months because their families couldn’t raise the required amount.

A friend of mine was arrested by police, along with some other Africans at a bus stop on June 30th and they are now in jail awaiting their families to pay the fines.
My friend doesn’t even have $500 to his name and owes a lot of people money both here and in Nigeria.

I’m ashamed of what has become of Nigerians in Guangzhou city. Everyday I see able bodied young men worrying about their fate and having little power over their situation here.
This isn’t the greener pasture most of us were made to believe that we’d find.
Many of us were promised jobs on arrival, some were told they’d get into Japan through China, others had business plans while coming and many others have various reasons for being in China.

China is a beautiful country, its citizens are eager to meet with foreigners and establish new prosperous business relationships.
I came to China with plans of teaching English in their middle schools. My contact, a Ghanaian, promised me that I’d get a well paid job once I could find my way to China.

I was promised a salary of 5000yuan ($720us) monthly, plus free accommodation in the school, so I made all the necessary arrangements and got here.
Unfortunately for me, Nigerians don’t get visa extensions like their other African counterparts.
Some agents told me I could get it for $3,000us but I didn’t have that kind of money and my visa expired and I joined the league of “Running men”, always looking over my shoulders, ever ready to run at a moments notice.
We sleep with one eye open, awakened by the slightest noise in the street and always peering cautiously through the window to make sure there are no police men or suspicious activities in the street.

We sometimes make fun of our situation but it’s not funny. There are over 5000 Nigerians in Guangzhou alone; some are frustrated but majority want to go home.
There are no jobs for us; most of us get our daily bread by trading in clothes and shoes. Some work as translators and guides for visiting businessmen from African and even Europeans.
Others work in restaurants that sell Nigerian/African meals while some even sell recharge cards.

The criminal minded are into drug trafficking and fraud. I must paint the true picture of our situation in China. Nigerians are not the only ones into such criminal activities, the Chinese and other nationalities are also involved.

There are few Nigerians who are doing very well. Their businesses are registered in China and they have legitimate papers. These are the elites among us.

As I write this, many in Nigeria are being deceived by dubious agents into coming to China.
I want to use this medium to dissuade them from making that trip
.

We’re trapped in China and want to go home.
I just read on the internet that the Chinese embassy in Nigeria said their government will issue exit visas to Nigerians so that we can leave.
If that is true, I thank them but I must be frank and state here that very few if any Nigerian will show up as long as their government will still demand the 5,000yuan fine.
Most of us cannot afford it.

I implore the Nigerian government to plead with them on our behalf to waive the fine and just ask us to provide our tickets and go home. Even the tickets will be hard for some people to pay for but I don’t expect the Chinese government to change their policy just for us.
If they can do that, we’ll be very grateful.

I know that if you get a plane ready now and ask the Nigerians living here in Guangzhou to go, there’ll be a stampede.
I believe I’m speaking for majority of Nigerians here and we pray our government comes to our aid.
We want to return home.

Politics / Re: Breaking News: Nigerians Rioting In China by makib: 1:40pm On Jul 15, 2009
There are hundreds of Nigerians languishing in Chinese jails becuase they cant afford to pay such fines.
I personnally know a guy who spent 6 months in jail till his family sold a land in the village and his fines were paid before he was deported.

Ask anybody you know in China.
Politics / Re: Breaking News: Nigerians Rioting In China by makib: 1:37pm On Jul 15, 2009
China gives on 30days visa and once it expires, you become an illegal immigrant and when caught, you must pay your fines and buy your airticket whcih totals $2000us
if you dont have the money, you'll languish in jail till your people get the money and pay

Politics / Re: Breaking News: Nigerians Rioting In China by makib: 1:27pm On Jul 15, 2009
Guys
the guy was in China for barely 3 months and when he heard others running, and escaping through a window, he panicked and joined them and mis- jumped from the 2nd floor. He wasnt into drugs
I got that information from a friend and from what i hear, Nigerians are very good athletes in China.
They can outrun that Jamaican sprinter just to escape from immigration police. The reason is that most of them cannot afford to pay $2000us fine and air ticket to go back to 9ja

Nuzo, you're in China, dont Nigerians pay fine and buy their own airticket before they can be deported??

More reinforcements of police are arriving at the scene and more Nigerians are gathering and singing/chanting in protest. The Chinese police are overwhelmed and are threatening the Nigerians with electric guns/sticks but the Nigerians are standing their ground.

Breaking News.

some Nigerians in the commercial city of Guangzhou China are currenting embarking on a public protest in front of a police station in Gaungyuen xilu road.
the reason for the civil unrest is that a Nigerian just fell to his death while being pursued by un-uniformed(mufty) police men.
The deceased man was an illegal immigrant and fell to his death in Tanqi Plaza, which is also on the road with the police station.

Politics / Massob Knock Gov. Obi On The Head by makib: 10:34am On Jul 08, 2009
A MOST bizarre breach of security and decorum was recorded at the weekend in Ngwo, Enugu State where suspected members of the Movement for the Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) hounded Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, one of whom successfully gave the governor a knock on the head. grin

The daring assault occurred at the residence of the late former governor of old Anambra State, Chief C. C. Onoh, where the Ibo crme-de-la- crme gathered to pay their last respects to the departed elder statesman.

However, a possible bloodbath was averted by Obi who swiftly called his security details to order as the latter made to cut down the MASSOB mob in a hail of bullets.

Obi, alongside other South-East governors, had already paid his last respect to Onoh on Thursday, July, 2 but on the invitation of Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the governor accompanied the ex-Biafran warlord on a condolence visit to the Onoh Family, who are his in-laws. Chief Onoh was the father of Ojukwu's wife, Bianca.

According to the Special Assistant to the governor on Media And Publicity, Valentine Obienyem, trouble started when MASSOB members allegedly led by their leader, Raphael Uwazurike, sited Obi coming. They reportedly started shouting: "We must kill you and your family; we must send you back to the UK."

Obienyem said at the scene, the governor sat at a different area from Mr. Emeka Etiaba and Uwazurike. He said Odumegwu-Ojukwu later invited Obi to join him where he was seated. As the governor moved to oblige Odumegwu-Ojukwu, some MASSOB members accosted him, saying he had refused to identify with them and hence was not a Biafran.

"It came to a climax when one of them knocked the governor on the head. The security men attached to the governor were already ready to shoot but Obi calmed them down," Obienyem noted.

A visibly angry Odumegwu-Ojukwu ordered the MASSOB out of the gathering and brought the situation under control.
Travel / Re: Two British Nigerians Detained In China Unlawfully. by makib: 10:26am On Jul 08, 2009
they were arrested and detained for interfering with police work.
i personally know the ladies in question and one of them lost her mother because of this. The mother heard she was detained in China and collapsed. she died three days later in an Irish hospital.
The ladies were released the following day.

according to their lawyer, The problem is that the ladies interfered with police work. the police had held down a nigerian who they believed was an illegal immigrant and he escaped from the police while the ladies were interfering. that was why they were detained for 10 days.

The ladies said they interfered because the non uniformed men were beating and kicking the nigerian and they interfered not knowing that they were police. they also were dragged away to the police station were they produced they British passports, but the police decided to punish them because the other nigerian escaped.

TV/Movies / Re: Americans Don't Watch Nigerian Movies? by makib: 1:11am On Jun 30, 2009
why should the inetrnational community watch nollywood films?
its like watching a bunch of school kids drama. No story line, no suspence, stolen sound tracks, bad acting and directing(in some), use of sub standard recording equipment.
i own about 500 DVDs of american movies and not a single Nigerian movie.
TV/Movies / Re: What Do You Dislike About Nigerian Movies by makib: 1:06am On Jun 30, 2009
very bad story lines. and too much continuity ie part1,2,3,4.
what the hell is that?
no suspence what so ever. i can predict the end of a movie by watching the first 20 minutes of the movie.

TV/Movies / Re: How To Get Your First Movie Job In Nollywood by makib: 12:52am On Jun 30, 2009
Dont listen to that guy. he has ultirior motives.
the 2nd poster has hit the nail on the head.
just make sure you're talented and have good command of the English language, and can also showcase good facial expressions, then go for auditions. And please accept any role given to you no matter what it is, because you need experience.
school drama and movies are two different things.
I started acting in the church and then school dramas but it's nothing compared to actually taking part in a movie.
I got a role as a gate man in a movie in 1996 but i declined it as humiliating. i didnt get another opportunity till 2006 when i auditioned for a part as a villager but got the role of a bodyguard instead. i quickly accepted the role and ended up starring alongside Mercy Johnson, Nonso Diobi, Jackie Appiah, Emma Anyalogu and many other big names.
I ended up with a speaking role in my first movie and had another movie job lined up with Mama G before i left Nigeria.

if you really want to be an actor, please brace up, because its not easy. Many of today's stars were never paid for their first movie roles. some didnt even get paid for their 1st to 5th movies. they just wanted to prove their worth and pay their dues in the movie industry.
Prove your worth and you'll go places.
cheers and good luck

These kind of inhuman treatment occurs mostly in China and if you recieved a VIP treatment when you visited China, then blame others for falling victim to what they were innocent of.
Moreover, being a briton a whatever, does not justify your hospitality in China; they should learn to treat people with respect and not deny them their basic human right.

While I understand the need of Christians to defend themselves, i hope these visionaries from CAN will stand up to be counted when Nigeria enters the era of secondary school , danfo bus , go slow and office shootings by unhinged individuals.

this is just what nigeria needs for , the next ife modakeke, \ ekiti \ fight over stool in imo fights. instead of the usual press byline, cudgels and machetes were used freely, we will see desert eagles, glocks, .45s, .22, uzis and sawn off shotguns were used freely. . .

more to the point, the idea of legalising guns as a deterrent is ridiculous. or do you think those retarded almajiris won't have access to the same guns? it is far harder to kill person with a knife, cudgel, as it is bloody. with a gun however, it just like that. be careful what you wish for.

so, you're saying christains should just keep running or stay and be killed? evidently, you've never witnessed these riots and killings sad

Politics / Re: CAN Wants Nigerians To Carry Arms (Religious Crisis) by makib: 8:39am On Feb 26, 2009
Jakumo:

The right to bear some categories of fire-arms already exists in Nigeria. Basically, current Nigerian firearm regulations permit licenced civilian ownership of single and double barreled shotguns, as well as bolt-action rifles that are NOT chambered for military rounds such as the .308 or .223.

In typical Nigerian fashion, gun ownership laws have been "bent", such that large numbers of pump-action and semi-automatic shotguns have quietly been licensed for civilians through the usual "back door" means, particularly in Eastern Nigeria. Despite the existence this vast underground arsenal of "legal" multi-shot weapons, the criminal element still maintains a significant edge over civilians because the robbers tend to favor illegal military assault rifles and police-issue submachineguns, due to the sheer volume of withering fire those combat weapons can lay down in seconds.

Concealable pistols and machineguns are the ONLY weapons which CANNOT be licenced in Nigeria, and rightly so, since a hidden weapon is potentially more dangerous than an openly displayed gun, while a fully automatic weapon in the hands of an untrained shooter would become a very indiscriminate killer of any innocent bystanders located within the effective range of those guns, which can be up to 200 yards for the rifles.

To those opposed to the widespread circulation of guns in Nigeria, the genie is ALREADY out of the bottle, BUT, the real danger comes not from the thousands of law-abiding citizens who have armed themselves for "hunting" or more honestly, for home-defence, but from the armed robbery gangs who are never limited by legal technicalities, in terms of their weapons of choice.

if that is so my brother, i'll get myself a pump action shot gun if i'm still going to live in the north.
This butchering of unarmed christians must stop.
i dont mind being killed as long as i take along many of those mother fuckers to the grave with me
Politics / Re: CAN Wants Nigerians To Carry Arms (Religious Crisis) by makib: 6:04am On Feb 26, 2009
If you've ever lived in the north and survived an attack by the cowards who attack unarmed men, women and children all in the name of religion, , you wont hesitate to arm yourself.
I survived such an attack in 2006 in maiduguri.
Since then, i believe we have the right for self defence.
The bastards burnt women and children alive!!!
A catholic priest was killed and burnt in front of his church near pompomari area of maiduguri.
Many other churches were burnt. pastors were killed. entire business areas were burnt down including No. 6 Ahmadu bello way, a popular area which housed over 20 shops belonging to christians.
St. Augustine catholic church (built by the british in 1949) was burnt to the ground with its schools and parish house.
NUJ building opposit it was also burnt.
the funny thing is that none of these appeared in any newspaper then. why?
the papers didnt report the burning of NUJ building!! why?
most of the gory details were not given to nigerians because it might cause another civil war!!
I support the right to be arms in self defence.
I've learnt from experience that the religious rioters dont attack people who can fight back
once, you counter attack, they flee and the stupid police come out to stop you with tear gas!! thats what they did to us on that day.

Americans are now fleeing to Canada, China, Germany etc. Obama's brother who was at capitol hill for his presidential innoguration lives in Shenzen city, China. He has lived in China for 7 years now.
President Obama himself lived in Indonesia for 4 years as a boy.
Nigerians who are leaving are not just doing it for the fun of it. they learn new things, gather knowledge and wealth and return home to make a difference.
It doesnt mean that all nigerians abroad make it. some do, many dont, not because they're not hardworking but because of the nature of their trip.
Soludo was abroad before he answered the nations call, so are many other professionals.
Our prayers should be for our people to be successful wherever they are and be good ambassadors.
If you think they shouldnt travel,, Go back to your village! afterall, they're are schools and markets in our various villages. what are we doing in the city if not looking for greener pastures.
