Politics / Jonathan’s ‘favourable’ Policies Made Me - Dangote by Makzylopez: 4:17pm On Sep 06, 2013
Business mogul, Aliko Dangote, on Thursday said his achievements as Africa’s richest man and 25th richest person on earth was due to the favourable policies of President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration.

Dangote spoke on Thursday night in Nairobi when President Jonathan met with the Nigerian community in the East African country.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the meeting was part of the activities lined-up for the three-day visit of President Jonathan to Kenya which began Thursday.

Dangote, who was on the President’s entourage told the gathering that Jonathan had done a lot to improve business climate in Nigeria.

He said, “I want to tell you what the President has been doing in Nigeria. He is very humble and may not want to sing about what he has been doing.

“I will tell you what he has been doing to Nigerians and to some of us who are in business in Nigeria.

“We are very grateful for some of the policies he has introduced.

Politics / Re: Police/nscdc Clash: Jonathan Directs DSS Totake Over Investigation by Makzylopez: 3:32pm On Mar 29, 2013
GEJ has taken the right step cos the credibility and reliability of the SSS has for once never been in doubt.they have remained the last hope of Nigerians security wise. But my take on the incident is that no matter how the police were provoked, it didn't warrant them to take the life of any security agaent. Just hope the SSS will have it @ the back of their mind in the course of the investigation.

so whose fault is it that Buhari refused to attend the meeting where he would have established his stance. to me, he shied away from his responsibilities. which is an indictment on him..

Buhari was among three past presidents that failed to attend the meeting. Get your facts right.

Politics / Re: State Pardon For VIP Ex-convicts - A Worthy Step Or Not? by Makzylopez: 2:57pm On Mar 13, 2013
you are not been objective and sincere here. your feud is just because GEJ is involved. is He the author of the constitution which empowers him to grant pardon with approval from the council of state ?
eGuerrilla:

My argument is that GEJ appears to have reached for a new low in his fight against corruption.

The pardon granted to Salisu Buhari back in 2000 was bad enough, but this one clearly sets Nigeria apart as a country that cannot be taken seriously in matters relating to financial probity.

A more upright individual would rather walk away than to be seen spinning yarns intended to provide some kind of smokescreen.

Politics / Re: State Pardon For VIP Ex-convicts - A Worthy Step Or Not? by Makzylopez: 2:30pm On Mar 13, 2013
so what is your argument wiseman, is it that their crimes are unpardonable or what ?
eGuerrilla:

None of those felons had executive powers which provided direct control over the treasury of a state.
None of those felons were political benefactors of Obama.

Against this backdrop, do you see how easy it is to draw parallels between your contribution, here, and the onset of reta.ardation.

[b]Nigerians are ignorantly aiding international media to paint the country the way they like in the international domain. is not as if i support the development. but my little research has made me to understand that is a prerogative power exercised by heads of government all over the globe. for instance, US Democratic President Barack Obama has pardoned 16 people up to this point in his term of office. Among them are:

*James Bernard Banks, of Liberty, Utah, sentenced to two years of probation in 1972 for illegal possession of government property.[21]

*Russell James Dixon, of Clayton, Ga., sentenced to two years of probation in 1960 for a liquor law violation.[21]

*Laurens Dorsey, of Syracuse, N.Y., sentenced in 1998 to five years of probation and $71,000 in restitution for conspiracy to defraud by making false statements to the Food and Drug Administration.[21]

*Ronald Lee Foster, of Beaver Falls, Pa., sentenced in 1963 to a year of probation and a $20 fine for mutilating coins.[21]

*Timothy James Gallagher, of Navasota, Texas, sentenced in 1982 to three years of probation for cocaine possession and conspiracy to distribute.[21]

*Roxane Kay Hettinger, Powder Springs, Ga., sentenced in 1986 to 30 days in jail and three years of probation for conspiracy to distribute cocaine.[21]

*Edgar Leopold Kranz Jr., of Minot, N.D., who received 24 months of confinement and a pay reduction for cocaine use, adultery and bouncing checks.[21]

*Floretta Leavy, of Rockford, Ill., sentenced in 1984 to 366 days in prison and three years of parole for drug offenses.[21]

*Scoey Lathaniel Morris, of Crosby, Texas, sentenced in 1991 to three years of probation and $1,200 restitution for counterfeiting offenses.[21]

El rufai will not stop been funny. he must be out of his senses for proposing amnesty to boko haram. maybe he stands to benefit from it. how on earth did he think amnesty applied in the Niger-Delta can work in this particular case. like GEJ rightly said the other day, you can not offer amnesty to ghosts. maybe the advocates of Boko Haram amnesty can also advise the sect members to embrace dialogue, who knows that can make Mr. president to consider their proposal.

Politics / NNPC Releases Strategic Reserves To Fight Fuel Scarcity by Makzylopez: 12:02pm On Dec 06, 2012
Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, on Wednesday, said the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation had released a lot of the nation’s strategic reserves in its bid to end the fuel scarcity currently being experienced in many parts of the country.

She said the queues being witnessed at filling stations would have disappeared completely if not for workers’ union issues that came up recently.

Alison-Madueke spoke with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on the sidelines of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting.

She said, “We, on the NNPC side, had pushed out a lot of our strategic reserves in a bid to ensure that people were not overtly put out in terms of fuel scarcity. And if not for this recent union issue, I think it could have been completely alienated but I am sure over the next few days, it will die down completely. We are doing everything we can to ensure that this Christmas will not be like last Christmas.”

While stating that the fuel queues initially resurfaced because of the stringent subsidy claims measure put in place by the Federal Government, the minister said Nigerians could not continue to make case for transparency without being prepared to bear some of the hardship associated with cleaning up of the sector.

She explained that while verifications were being done and the claims paid, fuel queues would continue to disappear from filling stations.

She said, “Initially, the queues came out of the whole fuel subsidy issue and the fact that verifications of certain amounts and certain marketers’ claims were being made very stringently and this had to be done.

“We cannot have our cakes and eat it. We cannot keep calling out for transparency and accountability and pointing at corruption if we are not prepared to bear some of the hardship that will obviously come when you are trying to clean up a sector.

“The verifications were being done, payments could not be made by the finance ministry, and I think they have said that several times. But the verifications have been done, and payments are now being made. Like I said, the queues are actually beginning to go down.”

The minister said the NNPC was doing everything possible to ensure that there emerged a level playing field for all interested marketers and operators.

She said government had supported more indigenous marketers and operators in terms of setting up and also allowing them access into the sector, adding that the government intended to continue doing so aggressively.

Speaking on her experience in the cabinet as she celebrated her 52nd birthday, Alison-Madueke said it had been extremely challenging and rewarding.
Politics / Re: Nigeria Anti-corruption Index Improves - TI 2012 Report by Makzylopez: 10:01am On Dec 06, 2012
we should for once acknowledge and commend recorded improvements. its a gradual process.
Demdem: These are probably part of the reasons why Nigeria didnt have a better score no doubt. We could have done better.

Nigeria remained rooted to the bottom of the global corruption ranking Wednesday as global corruption watchdog, Transparency International, rated it the 35th most corrupt country in the world.

In a report released at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Nigeria scored 27 out of a maximum 100 marks to clinch the 139th position out of the 176 countries surveyed for the report. It shared that position with Azerbaijan, Kenya, Nepal and Pakistan.

Countries such as Togo, Mali, Niger and Benin fared better than Nigeria.

Nigeria placed 143rd in the 2011 ranking, making it the 37th most corrupt country. It is difficult to say Nigeria has improved in the ranking this year because 182, six more than this year’s, were ranked in 2011. cry cry cry cry shocked shocked shocked shocked

This year’s index ranks 176 countries/territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption, TI explained in the report.
The index draws on 13 surveys covering expert assessments and surveys of businesspeople.
The Corruption Perceptions Index is the leading indicator of public sector corruption, offering a yearly snapshot of the relative degree of the corruption problem by ranking countries from all over the globe.
Nigeria’s woeful performance in this year’s survey is not entirely surprising.

Since assuming office in 2010, President Jonathan has not shown vigour in the fight against corruption – including corruption involving past and current actors in his administration.
The tipping point in the president’s profile, regarding reluctance in promoting transparency, came when, in televised media chat in June, he scoffed at a question on why he had not publicly declared his asset. On live television, the president snapped “I don’t give a damn!”

The petroleum minister, Diezani Madueke, a close ally of the president, has heaps of established corruption allegations against her, but none has been investigated by Mr. Jonathan’s administration; while she still remains in office as one of the favorite ministers.
In August 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan secretly ordered the payment of $155 million to Malabu oil, a firm owned by an ex-convict and former petroleum minister, Dan Etete. Not only was the payment done without the knowledge of the Finance Minister, as revealed by PREMIUM TIMES, Malabu transferred the money into dubious accounts including that owned by a man with links to Mr. Jonathan. Both the Senate and the House of Representatives have agreed to investigate the Malabu scandal.

Ranging from the monumental fuel subsidy scam to the massive corruption uncovered in pension administration to the scams at the Security and Exchange Commission and the Bureau of Public Enterprises, Nigeria stinks with graft. Government officials, including some of Mr. Jonathan’s favourite appointees have been named in the brazen theft of public funds.

Two members of the President’s cabinet, Godsday Orubebe and Stella Oduah, illegally registered an NGO, Neighbour to Neighbour, on whose board they sit, and which they then used in campaigning for the President’s election; in contravention of CAC registration guidelines and the CAMA Act. The presidency has kept mum on this.

There have been several cases of visitors to the Presidential Villa offered huge sums of money after their visits. The Save Nigeria Group was offered $30 thousand, and the Northern elders N20 million; both groups rejected the cash gifts given to them by the presidency.
There are also piles of corruption cases involving government officials, politicians and ‘friends of the government’ that have been lingering for years while perpetrators roam free.

Yet, in his Independence Day anniversary speech to Nigerians, President Jonathan claimed his administration had made substantial gains in the fight against corruption, saying TI had endorsed and praised his administration’s war against corruption.
Transparency International promptly replied, disowning Mr. Jonathan and saying it had no such report.

TI described this year’s report as an indication that “corruption is a major threat facing humanity. Corruption destroys lives and communities, and undermines countries and institutions. It generates popular anger that threatens to further destabilise societies and exacerbate violent conflicts.”
The organization added, “Corruption translates into human suffering, with poor families being extorted for bribes to see doctors or to get access to clean drinking water. It leads to failure in the delivery of basic services like education or healthcare. It derails the building of essential infrastructure, as corrupt leaders skim funds.

“Governments need to integrate anti-corruption actions into all aspects of decision-making. They must prioritise better rules on lobbying and political financing, make public spending and contracting more transparent, and make public bodies more accountable.”
