Politics › FG Declares Wednesday Public Holiday To Mark Democracy Day by ManirBK(op): 5:50pm On Jun 11, 2024 |
The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, June 12, 2024 as a public holiday to mark this year’s Democracy Day. In a statement on Tuesday, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government, congratulated Nigerians on the occasion. He said, “As we mark another Democracy day in the history of our dear country, let us all reflect on the efforts of our founding fathers and ensure that Nigeria remains a united, secured, peaceful and indivisible entity”. He urged Nigerians to remain steadfast on the tenets of democratic governance. Tunji-Ojo reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to positive reforms to revive the nation’s economy and enhance security. ADVERTISEMENT The minister called on Nigerians and friends of Nigeria to appreciate the progress that has been made, and look forward to a better future for Nigeria’s Democracy. He wished Nigerians a Happy Democracy Day celebration. With its return to democracy from the dark years of military rule on May 29, 1999, Nigeria celebrated Democracy Day every year on May 29. The day is to celebrate the ideals of democracy since the beginning of the Fourth Republic 25 years ago. In 2018, the President Muhammadu Buhari moved Democracy Day from May 29 to June 12 in honour of one of the national heroes for democracy, Chief M.K.O Abiola and “to remind all Nigerians of one free election after which the presumed winner (Abiola) along with Nigerians were denied their rights and their choice”. The 2024 Democracy Day would be the second for President Tinubu who was sworn in as Nigeria’s Commander-In-Chief on May 29, 2023. https://www.channelstv.com/2024/06/11/fg-declares-wednesday-public-holiday-to-mark-democracy-day/ mynd44 lalasaticlala seun nlfpmod fergie001 |

Politics › Sokoto Amends Law To Grant Gov Authority To Appoint District, Village Heads by ManirBK(op): 4:55pm On Jun 11, 2024 |
The Sokoto State Government has given the green light to amend section 76 of the local government and chieftaincy law to align with prevailing practices within the state. Under the current law, the authority to appoint district and village heads lies with the Sultanate Council. However, in practice, the Sultanate Council merely provides recommendations to the state government, with the governor ultimately making the appointments. Nasir Binji, the state’s attorney-general and commissioner for justice, clarified that the proposed amendment aimed to synchronise the legal framework with the customary procedure in Sokoto State. Addressing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting, Binji explained that under the proposed amendment, the Sultanate Council would retain the power to recommend candidates, while the authority to appoint would be vested in the governor. This move comes in the wake of recent dismissal of certain traditional rulers in the state due to their alleged involvement in land-related issues and security concerns. Additionally, the state government has endorsed an amendment to the Sokoto Local Government Law 2008, extending the tenure of elected chairmen from two years to three years. This decision marks a reversal of the tenure reduction implemented during the Aminu Waziri Tambuwal administration. Career › 40 Directors Fail Permanent Secretary Exam by ManirBK(op): 9:40am On Jun 01, 2024 |
No fewer than 40 directors have scored below the average pass mark of 50 per cent of the qualifying examination for the positions of permanent secretaries.
According to The Nation, 92 directors sat for the examination on Monday but the results indicated 40 of them failed.
The report also disclosed that three directors did not come for the exam, while one could not finish the exam.
A memorandum dated May 28, 2024, from the Office of the Head of Service, designated as “HCSF/ CMO/ AOD/012/IX/59,” revealed that the next stage of the selection process will involve an ICT-based assessment.
This is coming as a challenge despite the federal government’s efforts, through the Office of the Head of Civil Service, to address prevailing and forthcoming vacancies by appointing new permanent secretaries.
The vacancies available are found in South-South, South-East and other regions including Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Jigawa, Ondo, Zamfara.
Meanwhile, the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Folashade Yemi-Esan, made the important details in the circular known to Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
Yemi-Esan’s circular, dated April 19, 2024, highlighted the eligibility criteria, stressing that only directors who attained substantive director status by January 1, 2022, qualify for consideration.
The circular noted the commencement of the process for appointing Permanent Secretaries, as well as stressing the importance of adhering to eligibility criteria, updating records on the IPPIS Verification Portal, and maintaining a clean disciplinary record.
The circular, referenced as “HCSF/CMO/AOD/012/IX/24,” stated: “Following the approval of Mr. President, the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation is initiating the process for appointing Permanent Secretaries in the Federal Civil Service for current and anticipated vacancies in Akwa-Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Jigawa, Ondo, Zamfara states, South-East, and South-South geo-political zones, where current Permanent Secretaries have retired or will retire between April and September 2024.”
Eligibility criteria outlined in the memo include having reached the position of substantive Director on Salary Grade Level 17 by January 1, 2022, updating records on the IPPIS Verification Portal, being from the specified states or geopolitical zones, and not retiring before December 31, 2025.
It, however, stated that officers currently undergoing disciplinary procedures are not considered from the selection process. https://dailytrust.com/40-directors-fail-permanent-secretary-exam/

Politics › Nigeria Old Anthem ' We Hail Thee' by ManirBK(op): 5:28pm On May 29, 2024 |
History "Nigeria, We Hail Thee" was adopted as Nigeria's first national anthem on October 1, 1960. The anthem's lyrics were written by Lillian Jean Williams, a British expatriate who lived in Nigeria when it achieved independence. Frances Berda composed the music for "Nigeria, We Hail Thee." The second national anthem, " Arise, O Compatriots ," replaced "Nigeria, We Hail Thee" in 1978. The lyrics were created by five Nigerians: P. O. Aderibigbe, John A. Ilechukwu, Dr. Sota Omoigui, Eme Etim Akpan and B.A. Ogunnaike. On May 23, 2024, the House of Representatives passed a bill to revert from the current anthem to Nigeria, We Hail Thee. This bill was signed into law on May 29, 2024. Lyrics Nigeria we hail thee Our own dear native land Though tribes and tongue may differ In brotherhood we stand Nigerians all , are proud to serve Our sovereign Motherland. Our flag shall be a symbol That truth and justice reign In peace or battle honour'd, And this we count as gain, To hand on to our children A banner without stain. O God of all creation Grant this our one request. Help us to build a nation Where no man is oppressed And so with peace and plenty Nigeria shall be blessed. Criticism When "Nigeria, We Hail Thee" was first announced, the new national anthem faced criticism for a number of reasons. The Daily Service , a newspaper run by the Yoruba organisation Egbé Ọmọ Odùduwà , started a rebellious campaign against the national anthem, which led to a committee being established to collect signatures as a petition https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nigeria_We_Hail_Thee mynd44 oam4j lalasticlala seun nlfpmod fergie001 |

Culture › Gunfire heard around Kano emir’s palace by ManirBK(op): 12:23pm On May 28, 2024 |
Gunfire was on Monday night reported around the mini palace where the deposed Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, is staying in Nasarawa GRA of the state capital.
The palace is located about 300 metres to the Kano Government House where movement of vehicles is restricted to one portion of the road leading to Tarauni.
The emir’s palace, which has been witnessing a buzz of activities, is under survellance by a combined security team.
On Sunday, armed hunters at the main Emir’s palace where the reinstated Emir Lamido Sanusi is staying, tried to attack some protesters calling on Kano governor to obey a court order restraing it from removing Mr Ado-Bayero.
The hunters relented because of the presence of the security agents at the palace.
Some residents and passerby suspected that the gunshots were fired to discourage any attempt to arrest Mr Ado-Bayero after a state High court ordered his eviction from the palace on Monday.
A resident of the area told PREMIUM TIMES some commuters diverted their route in fear that the palace was under attack.
“Have you heard what is happening at the Aminu Ado Bayero palace? My wife just called me now that there is heavy gunfire at the Emir’s palace and they don’t know what’s going on there. The gunfire has been coming from the direction of the palace,” a resident of the area asked PREMIUM TIMES.
“People heading to Ahmadu Bello Way are said to be changing their routes but we don’t know what is actually happening,” the resident said.
It was not immediately clear whether the gunshots were from security agents or palace guards.
Both the Kano State police commissioner, Muhammad Gumel, and the command’s spokesperson, Haruna Kiyawa, could not be reached on phone to comment on the incident.
The development followed a court order by the Kano State High Court ordered to evict the dethroned Emir Mr Ado Bayero, from his palace.
The state high court on Monday ordered Mr Ado-Bayero and his four colleagues in Bichi, Rano, Gaya and Karaye Emirates to stop parading themselves as emirs.
The court issued the interim injunction pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice filed by the Kano State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the Speaker, Kano State House of Assembly, and the Kano State House of Assembly. https://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/headlines/698247-gunfire-heard-around-kano-emirs-palace.html
