JIGGERNAPPY:
Let's simplify the equation:
2√x = √8
Divide both sides by 2:
√x = √8/2 √x = √4 √x = 2
Now, square both sides:
x = 4
So, the value of x is 4!

Health10,000 GMO Mosquitoes Released In Djibouti To Fight Malaria by ManirBK(op): 9:09pm On May 23, 2024
Tens of thousands of genetically modified (GMO) mosquitoes have been released in Djibouti in an effort to stop the spread of an invasive species that transmits malaria.
The friendly non-biting male Anopheles stephensi mosquitoes, developed by Oxitec, a UK-based biotechnology company, carry a gene that kills female offspring before they reach maturity.

Only female mosquitoes bite and transmit malaria and other viral diseases.
It is the first time such mosquitoes have been released in East Africa and the second time in the continent.

Similar technology has been successfully used in Brazil, the Cayman Islands, Panama, and India, according to the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

More than one billion such mosquitoes have been released around the world since 2019, CDC says.

The first batch of the mosquitoes were released into the open air on Thursday in Ambouli, a suburb of Djibouti city.
It is a pilot phase in a partnership between Oxitec Ltd, Djibouti’s government and Association Mutualis, an NGO.

“We have built good mosquitoes that do not bite, that do not transmit disease. And when we release these friendly mosquitoes, they seek out and mate with wild type female mosquitoes,” Oxitec head Grey Frandsen told the BBC.

The laboratory-produced mosquitoes carry a "self-limiting" gene that prevents female mosquito offspring from surviving to adulthood when they mate.

Only their male offspring survive but would eventually die out, according to the scientists behind the project.

Unlike the sterile male Anopheles colluzzi mosquitoes released in Burkina Faso in 2018, the friendly stephensi mosquitoes can still have offspring.

The release is part of the Djibouti Friendly Mosquito Program which was started two years ago to stop the spread of Anopheles stephensi, an invasive species of mosquito first detected in the country in 2012.
The country was then on the verge of eliminating malaria, when it recorded close to 30 malaria cases. Since then, malaria cases have risen exponentially in the country to 73,000 by 2020.

The species is now present in six other African countries - Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Sudan, Nigeria and Ghana.

The Stephensi species, originally from Asia, is very difficult to control. It is also referred to as an urban mosquito that has outsmarted traditional methods of control. It bites both during the day and at night and is resistant to chemical insecticides.

Dr Abdoulilah Ahmed Abdi, a presidential health adviser in Djibouti, told the Financial Times news website that the government’s objective was to “urgently reverse malaria transmission in Djibouti, which has spiked over the past decade”.

“Not long ago, it [malaria] was extremely rare in our communities," said Association Mutualis director Dr Bouh Abdi Khaireh.
"Now we see malaria patients suffer on a daily basis across Djibouti. There is an urgent need for new interventions.”

It has been easy to roll out the new anti-malaria project due to Djibouti's small size, a mostly urban country of slightly over a million people, the organisers said.

“Malaria is a serious disease that really affects our health. People are really waiting to see how these friendly mosquitoes will help us win the fight,” Saada Ismael, a malaria survivor who took part in the community preparation, told the BBC.

Genetically modified organisms have always been a controversial subject in Africa. Environmental groups and campaigners have warned of consequences to ecosystems and existing food chains.

But Mr Frandsen from Oxitec says no adverse effects on environmental or human health has been documented for over 10 years, during which the developer of biological solutions has released a billion modified mosquitoes.
“Our focus is ensuring that whatever we release in the environment is safe, and highly effective. There is no environmental impact. They are non-toxic, non-allergenic and species specific,” he added.

The genetically modified genes are not found in the mosquitoes’ saliva and according to Oxitec, even a person who is bitten by one will not be exposed to the effects of the genes.
"This new solution may be controversial but it is the future,” said presidential health adviser Dr Abdi.

If successful, larger field trials and eventual operational deployment of the mosquitoes will continue until next year in the country.
Malaria is a deadly disease that kills at least 600,000 people every year globally. Nine in 10 of all deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the World Health Organization.

D espite the end of Operation Desert Sanity III, which recorded
great successes in Sambisa forest with the rescue of 386
kidnap victims, troops will remain to rid the forest of
terrorists, the Nigerian Army said yesterday.

It said the fact that Operation Sanity III had ended didn’t mean an end to operations in the forest, spokesperson of 7 Division Nigerian Army in Maiduguri, Lt. Col. A.Y. Jingina told our correspondent in a
telephone chat yesterday.
The military launched Operations Desert Sanity III to eliminate
remnants of terrorists from Sambisa forest. It offered insurgents an
option to willingly surrender for the 10 days the operation lasted.
Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Christopher Musa, told The Nation
that the victims were rescued within four days during the operation.
He confirmed that the military launched the operation to rid the forest of terrorists ahead of the raining season.
On Sunday, the Acting-General Officer Commanding, 7 Division, Brig.-
Gen. AGL Haruna, announced the rescue of the 386 kidnapped
victims at a news briefing in Konduga local government area of Borno State.
The victims were handed over to the Borno State Government in
Maiduguri, the state capital, on Monday.
Lt.-Col. Jingina said: “The people that were handed over to the state
government were the people that were rescued during the operation.
“If we organised operations of this nature, the troop is not that they
are going to withdraw soldiers from wherever they are. If we are to
do that, they (the terrorists) will come and overrun us. We have
soldiers all over – in Bama, Goza – all over the place, they will
continue to do their normal routine duty. Not as if they will go and
sleep.
“The handing over of the kidnap victims is the climax of that
operation. The operation was to last for four days initially but it end
up lasting for 10 days.
“If you go for operation and you see that you are gaining successes…
that is why the operation lasted for 10 days instead of the initial four
days. And you can see the success. They recovered some equipment and other things from the Sambisa forest.
“Some of the women rescued said that they had been in the forest for over 10 years, but the military went there and rescued them during the operation.”
“The Borno State Government will rehabilitate them after which they
will integrate them into the wider society. That is how it is done.”

The boys also will grap bundles of trophies next season. Watchout!

SportsChelsea Have Been Crowned Women's League Champions For A Fifth Successive Season by ManirBK(op): 6:18pm On May 18, 2024
Chelsea wrapped up a sensational fifth successive Women’s Super League title by thrashing Manchester United at Old Trafford in Emma Hayes’ final game in charge.

The Blues, who led rivals Manchester City by goal difference at the
top of the table heading into the final day, knew a big scoreline was
potentially needed to win the title.
And with so much at stake Chelsea’s players delivered with a ruthlessness that United could never match at Old Trafford.
British record signing Mayra Ramirez produced an outstanding individual display, scoring twice and assisting the other two as
Hayes’ side went in at the break with a 4-0 lead.
Johanna Rytting Kaneryd, Sjoeke Nusken, Melanie Leupolz and Fran
Kirby added to Ramirez’s dazzling double as Chelsea romped to
victory.
It was the perfect farewell for Hayes, who was full of emotion on a
remarkable afternoon in Manchester, capping off a 12-year career at
the Blues in style.
United legend Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Dave Brailsford, the
representative of new minority owners Ineos, were in the directors
box watching on as United barely laid a glove on the champions.
Aside from Maya Le Tissier’s header which bounced off the crossbar
with United already trailing 2-0, and a terrible miss from close range
by Lucia Garcia late on, Marc Skinner’s side failed to create much to
trouble Chelsea.
Hayes, who leaves to manage the United States women’s national
team, bowed out to the familiar sound of 3,000 travelling fans
chanting "Chelsea, champions" and with a 14th major trophy at the
club.
It was a rare sunny day in Manchester but there was nothing out of
the ordinary from Chelsea - they were ruthless, clinical and ended the day as winners yet again.
But this was a special day for the Blues as they not only produced
the goods on the pitch, but partied in style in the stands throughout.
Ramirez’s stunning display set the tone as she dribbled past
defenders, shrugged off others and entertained throughout, delivering for the fans who had travelled up from London on Saturday morning.
“Emma, what’s the score,” supporters chanted and she turned to put
up her hand, showing five, as the game continued in the background,
seemingly passing by without people noticing.
There was also a cameo for departing England international Kirby,
who came on as a substitute for the final 20 minutes and was able to soak in the success she has played such a key part in throughout her Blues career.
On the day, the damage was done early. Chelsea came out of the
blocks firing as Ramirez nodded in Guro Reiten’s curling cross for the opener.
Ramirez turned provided minutes later for Kaneryd, who dinked it
coolly over goalkeeper Mary Earps, before Nusken was again set-up
by the Colombian striker.
The second goal from Ramirez was a special one as she burst
through two defenders in the United box and nonchalantly fired it into the far corner.
And before United could even settle in the second half, Leupolz had
made it 5-0 to Chelsea, poking into an empty net after a defensive
horror show.
Kirby capped off a hugely successful spell at the club with a goal late on and was swarmed by her team-mates immediately afterwards,
while taking in the adulation of Chelsea’s fans.
It was a poor ending to a week where Manchester United celebrated
winning their first women’s major trophy, beating Tottenham at Wembley to lift the Women’s FA Cup, days before manager Skinner
signed a new contract extension.
This performance only emphasised the gap between the WSL’s elite
and United this season and the level Hayes’ side have set for those
chasing in England.

Cole Palmer wins the Premier League's Young Player of the year award following sensational season... but seemingly still has his eyes on picking up more honours

Cole Palmer has claimed the Premier League's Young Player of the Season award following the 22-year-old's sensational campaign.

Palmer, who joined Mauricio Pochettino's side earlier in the season from Manchester City, has been the Blue's star man, scoring 22 goals in 33 Premier League appearances this season, while also returning 10 assists.

In recent weeks, his goal-scoring form has showed no sign of relenting. He has been a shining light in Chelsea's resurgence at the back end of the season, scoring twice in their last three matches, propelling Pochettino's side into contention for a place in Europe next season.

The 22-year-old star, who is second in the Premier League's Golden Boot race to Erling Haaland, beat off competition from some excellent rising stars to win the award, including Phil Foden, who is a favourite to clinch this year's Player of the Season award.

It comes after eagle-eyed Chlesea fans last week noticed what their attacking midfielder had set as his phone screen background.

HealthHeat-Waves Kill 200 People In Adamawa In 2 Weeks by ManirBK(op): 10:07am On May 18, 2024
No fewer than 200 people have been killed by a dangerous humid heat that has been experienced from the 1st to 13th of this month in Yola, the Adamawa State capital.

Residents who spoke to our correspondent complained about a combination of high temperatures and relatively humid air, causing an approximate 47 to 50 degrees centigrade, which experts describe as a danger level, saying such could cause high risk of heat cramps and exhaustion.

Unofficial records at the Yola Cemetery Corporation (YCC), located in Damare area of the capital city, put the death toll from the unusually experienced excessive heat from May 1 to 13, 2024 at 400.

A former permanent secretary who was one of the eyewitnesses said: “I think 400 could have been a slight exaggeration, but surely, the number of people who died in these circumstances was as high as 200. At some point, up to 20 deaths were being recorded per day within that period.”

Many other persons who spoke with our correspondent said such unusual heat-waves were a seasonal occurrence in Yola and some other parts of Adamawa State, but that this “Even people who are up to 80 years of age said they had not experienced the excessive heat-waves we witnessed this year,” the former permanent secretary said.

During her visit to Damare cemetery on Thursday, some attendants told her that an average of 35 bodies were taken for burial at the facility on some of the days within the time under review.

Halliru Jauro Usman and Musa Umar, members of the YCC, attributed the increased deaths to hot weather.

Umar said the deceased’s ages were between 50 and 70.

“The actual number of deaths could be as high as 300 or even 400 from May 1 to 13, considering the number recorded daily,” he said.

Umar said the cemetery needed to be expanded in order to contain dead bodies.

His colleague, Usman, said people from numerous parts of Yola brought bodies of their deceased relatives to the cemetery.

A consultant at the Modibbo Adama Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said the surge in deaths could be attributed to high temperature, “leading to high level of infections affecting mostly the elderly.”

The consultant said the hospital had never recorded such a high number of deaths before.

He said high temperature could lead to dehydration, septicemia (also known as sepsis – the most extreme response of a person’s body to an infection) and measles.

We’re handling the situation – Head of epidemiology

Damba Kwenke, the Head of Adamawa Epidemiology, had earlier described the death toll as a rumour. But an investigation team he dispatched confirmed the rising deaths as a consequence of the heat-waves.

Kwenke later urged for vigilance from members of the public, assuring that the state government would manage the situation.

He said public health threats would be taken seriously, and promised to enhance more surveillance to investigate the issue further.

Death toll worst in decades – Ward head

Speaking to Daily Trust Saturday on Thursday, the ward head of Damare community, Ismaila Muhammed Barkindo, similarly said they had not experienced a staggering death toll within a short time as this since 1976.

He said many people were attributing the occurrences to high temperature.

Recalling the past, Barkindo said that in 1976, people had to resort to digging holes under bridges next to rivers to find cold places due to the extreme heat.

In the last few weeks, he said temperatures went beyond 45 degrees in the early hours of the morning in Yola.

He said most of those who died recently did not exhibit any symptom prior to their demise.

“In some cases, people died suddenly without any prior sign of distress or illness,” he said.

According to the ward head, the Damare cemetery was almost at full capacity and that a committee set up was contemplating closing it.

He said the YCC officials were currently considering opening a new cemetery in either Yolde Pate or Mbamba community due to the increased number of deaths.

“A final decision has not been made yet,” he said, adding that he is a member of the committee responsible for finding a new cemetery since the current one is almost filled up.

Extending condolences to families of the deceased, he urged people to minimise their movements under the scorching sun and increase the intake of water and fluid to prevent dehydration. He also advised people to take cold baths to cool their bodies.

A bereaved family member shared a heart-breaking account of how she lost her brother to sudden death.

She recounted how he was feeling hot and sought water to take a bath but could not find any.

“He developed fever and went to the Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), Yola for some tests. While waiting for the results, he suddenly slumped and died on the spot,” the woman recounted.

Hafsat Kawu, a housewife in Yola, said frequent power outage experienced in recent times in and around the city also compounded the situation for most residents, saying that people needed electricity to pump water from their boreholes, use fans and refrigerators, among others.

“It is a distressing moment for many families. We hope the government at the state and national levels will do something,” she said.

Humid heat-waves are reported by experts to be extremely dangerous, and these are common occurrences in parts of Nigeria at certain periods of the year.
